Following their mini set, the two singers took time to praise one another. Del Rey called Ellish, “The voice of our generation, the voice of your generation.” Eilish responded, “[Del Rey] is the reason for half you bitches’ existence — including mine!”
Other guests included Antonoff, who played piano alongside a hologram version of Del Rey singing a pre-recorded version of “Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have – But I Have It.” Plus, Batiste played keys for Del Rey as she pole-danced and sang “Candy Necklace.

Academy Award–nominated director Matthew Heineman’s American Symphony begins in 2022, just as composer Jon Batiste learns he was nominated for 11 Grammys; another summit among many high points in his career. Well known as the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Batiste is preparing for a one-night only performance at Carnegie Hall to present “American Symphony,” an orchestral piece intended to modernize the form.
At the same time Batiste’s career is picking up momentum, his life partner, Suleika Jaouad, learns that after a decade-long remission, her cancer has returned. American Symphony chronicles the emotional heights and depths that follow, creating a narrative that’s part love story, and part exploration of the processes and motivations behind two incredible creatives.

Jon Batiste is giving high praise to Beyoncé, with whom he collaborated on a new country music album, Cowboy Carter.
Beyoncé dropped the 27-track album Friday, but she made history last month with the release of single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart. That made her the first Black woman to accomplish such a feat, according to Billboard.
Batiste, who was one of several collaborators on Cowboy Carter, praised the Grammy-winning singer for her role in breaking down barriers across music genres.
“This is the moment yall, where we dismantle the genre machine,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.
He added: “Quincy Jones told me, as he also wrote in his forward to my We Are album, ‘it’s up to you to de categorize American music!! ,’ which is what Duke Ellington told him. I really believe that is our generations role,...

The 29-year-old British star Jacob Collier has risen to fame from YouTube all the way to the Grammys, earning six trophies throughout his career. While Collier was a Grammy favorite from his first album, “Djesse Vol. 3” was the one to put him on the radar for a lot of folks, earning three Grammy noms including for Album of the Year. That nomination was quite unexpected and launched Collier to a lot more fame, especially as his fusion of jazz/R&b/pop is quite unique and not what many would expect to cross over to the Grammy mainstream. Despite not being a huge commercial artist, Collier might be looking at his biggest year ever at the Grammys with his new album, “Djesse Vol. 4.” But just how much recognition will Collier get?

I throw around the concept of “Grammy darlings” a lot, but what exactly constitutes a Grammy darling? Is it just an artist who doesn’t lose Grammys often, like U2, Adele or Bruno Mars? Let’s go through a few top names.
Beyoncé: Darling
Listen, the most awarded person in Grammy history is definitely a darling. Granted, she has yet to win Album of the Year. However, more impressively, all of her projects have won at least one Grammy. Most have won multiple, including “Dangerously in Love,” “Lemonade,” and “Renaissance.” Beyoncé also gets nominations for pretty much anything she submits, and will likely become the first artist to nab nominations in rap, rock, R&b, dance, pop and country. On top of all that, it’s rare for Beyoncé to miss nominations in the general field, especially with no nominations review committees anymore to potentially force her out.

George previously shared how special the nomination was with The Hollywood Reporter. “With Lily, it’s not surprising to me that she’s been nominated. She’s great. With us, if you really wanted to look at it, our music is probably thousands of years old. For it to be recognized maybe for the first time ever, it’s overwhelming in that sense,” the drummer, singer and composer said.

Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald dressed five celebrity clients for Oscars 2024: nominees Jon Batiste, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Colman Domingo, presenter Regina King and Olivia Munn. But two days before the show, the star-styling duo’s stress levels remained firmly set to zero.
The secret? “Pre-planning, pre-planning, pre-planning,” McDonald told The Hollywood Reporter on Friday evening. “We made PDFs mapping everything out, even down to how many minutes it takes to get between hotels.”
“At the [Dec. 3] Academy Museum Gala, we had nine people attending,” Bannerman added. “That went quite well, so we also knew we could use that as our awards-season fire drill.”
Their client Batiste — a best original song Oscars 2024 nominee for “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony — already enjoyed a reputation as someone who loved fashion before joining Wayman + Micah’s impressive roster. “We started working with Jon in the latter part of last year,...

When Matthew Heineman set out to make American Symphony, he though he was going to be making a documentary about music. He was, indeed, following a musician, the celebrated fusion artist Jon Batiste, and doing so at a critical point in his career, when he was preparing for a performance in Carnegie Hall. The story became much more complicated, however, when Batiste’s partner, the writer Suleika Jaouad. became seriously ill, changing everything in their already hectic lives.
The thing about music that makes it so powerful, Batiste says, is its predictability – that sense that what happens is what was always supposed to happen. One might note that this makes it the polar opposite of life with leukaemia when life-threatening crises can develop within hours. As he continues to work, travelling to do audio research, developing his team, adjusting his compositions...

Harry Belafonte’s Daughters Criticize Grammys for Not Doing More to Recognize Singer During Ceremony
Harry Belafonte’s daughters, Shari and Gina, are calling out the Grammys for not doing more to recognize the late singer during the 2024 awards ceremony Sunday.
During the In Memoriam segment, Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Fantasia Barrino and Jon Batiste took to the stage to perform emotional tributes for Tina Turner, Tony Bennett, Sinead O’Connor, Clarence Avant and more.
While they performed, images of other artists the music industry lost last year were displayed onscreen behind them, including Belafonte, while Batiste sang “The Best Is Yet to Come.”
But Shari and Gina feel the Grammys should have given the singer a special tribute, similar to the ones for Turner, Bennett, O’Connor and Avant.
“While the folks who had a bit more of a #shoutout on the #GrammyAwards this year were absolutely deserving of accolades, I’m a bit appalled that our father was not included in a #SpecialTribute and...

Jon Batiste, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience of film students at Chapman University, is a singer, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and actor. At just 37, he has already won five Grammys — including, in 2022, album of the year, for We Are — and also has to his name an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award, all for the score of the 2020 film Soul. He is currently nominated for the best original song Oscar for his tune “It Never Went Away,” which is featured in Matthew Heineman’s Netflix documentary feature American Symphony, about the best of times and the worst of times in the life of Batiste and his wife, Suleika Jaouad.

While six-time Grammy nominees Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus won multiple awards and, in the case of Swift, made history, at the 2024 Grammys, fellow six-time nominees and past Grammy winners Olivia Rodrigo and Jon Batiste each went home empty-handed despite their half-dozen nominations apiece. Batiste even won album of the year in 2022 and some prognosticators thought he could emerge victorious for the top prize despite the strong female presence among this year’s nominees and winners.
Instead, Taylor Swift became the first performer to win album of the year four times with Midnights, and she announced a new album would be coming in a couple of months, giving her another shot at more Grammys gold.
Fellow multiple nominee Lana Del Rey, up for five awards, was also shut out, despite nods in a number of the Grammys’ top categories.

He kicked off the ceremony’s annual ‘In Memoriam’ segment by paying tribute to his late friend and fellow musical icon, Tony Bennett, who died in July 2023 at age 96, reports ‘People’ magazine.
“I remember hearing Tony Bennett singing ‘For Once in My Life’ when I was like 13 or 14 years old,” Stevie, 73, began the tribute. “But what’s amazing is I was able to actually sing the song with someone that I admired for so long, not just because of his voice, which was incredible, but because of his art, his love for art, his love for peace, his love for unity, his love for civil rights.”

Sorry to break your soul, but Beyoncé is not performing at Sunday’s Grammy Awards.

She came into our fourth annual event with nine nominations and walked away with nine victories including Artist of the Year for the fourth year in a row. Watch the announcement video above for winners in all categories, and scroll down for the complete list.
In the history of the GDMAs thus far, Swift is the only artist who has won Artist of the Year. She’s also the only artist who has won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The biggest Grammy Award of the night is Album of the Year, meant to honor complete pieces of work that defined the music scene and impacted the culture throughout the eligibility period. The award has gone to some of the most influential records of all time, including The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Adele’s “21.” While some years are more uncertain than others, this year the category seems to be a two-horse race, although a few other players might sneak their way through as well.
The frontrunners here are Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” and Sza’s “Sos.” Both records are massive commercial successes, finishing 2023 as the second and third biggest albums of the year, respectively. Both have also managed to be career peaks for these already uber-popular stars.

Updated with reaction from documentary nominees. In an Oscar stunner, two films considered a lock for nominations failed to be recognized Tuesday morning in the Best Documentary Feature category: American Symphony and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.
Instead, a group of five internationally focused documentaries earned nominations: National Geographic’s Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, To Kill a Tiger, and 20 Days in Mariupol.

In one of the tightest races for best original song at the 2024 Oscars, Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste, Diane Warren, “I’m Just Ken” and surprise contender “Wahzhazhe” from Killers of the Flower Moon have emerged as the nominees for the prestigious songwriting prize.
That means a number of top-notch acts who made the shortlist, including Lenny Kravitz, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Halle Bailey and more, didn’t make the cut.

Two songs from “Barbie” are Oscar-nominated, part of a diverse collection of songs and musical scores nominated for the 96th annual Academy Awards.
“What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, and “I’m Just Ken,” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, were chosen by the 390 voting members of the Academy music branch. Three “Barbie” songs were shortlisted (Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” being the third) but only two can be nominated, per Academy rules.
The “Barbie” songs are already considered frontrunners, and if either number prevails on March 10, the Oscar will go to a pair of songwriters who already have one of those golden statues. Siblings Eilish and O’Connell won for 2021’s James Bond film “No Time to Die,” while Ronson and Wyatt were two of four 2018 winners for Lady Gaga’s song “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born.”

When director Matthew Heineman and musician Jon Batiste began their second collaboration after The First Wave — a harrowing documentary in which Heineman embedded himself in a New York hospital during the early days of the Covid pandemic, and for which Batiste provided the score — the project was much less fraught than its predecessor.

But as awards season officially kicks off this Sunday with the 2024 Golden Globes, the best musical works in film and TV will be honored, too. Rounding out the stacked list of presenters for the Jan. 7 ceremony are Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Jared Leto, and Andra Day.
Among the musicians announced as presenters, Lipa is the only artist nominated at this year’s ceremony. The singer’s hedonistic Barbie anthem “Dance the Night” is up for Best Original Song.

There’s an old, old joke about the prestigious New York City concert venue Carnegie Hall, which opened in 1891.
“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”
“Practice, practice, practice.”
Over the past 130 years, such renowned composers as Antonin Dvorak, Richard Strauss, Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland, Philip Glass and Milton Babbitt debuted their works at the Carnegie.
The new Netflix documentary “American Symphony,” which has been Oscar shortlisted for best documentary, best original score and song, follows Academy and multiple Grammy Award-winning composer/musicians/singer Jon Batiste as he prepares to debut his first symphony at Carnegie Hall while his wife Suleika Jaouad battles a recurrence of leukemia. The heart-on-your-sleeve documentary ends with the triumphant premiere Sept. 22, 2022, that even a power outage on stage couldn’t top. Variety noted in its review: “It wasn’t just the story of America, and its collage-like charms and vices. This was also Batiste’s story,...
“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”
“Practice, practice, practice.”

“One of my secrets,” Snoop Dogg tells Latto in their recent Musicians on Musicians conversation, “is that I remain the biggest kid in the room at all times.” The new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now includes highlights of that interview (moderated by Rolling Stone staff writer Andre Gee) along with the two interviews from our first-ever live Musicians on Musicians event: Lil Yachty’s conversation with Tierra Whack (moderated by Rolling Stone’s supervising producer of news video, Delisa Shannon), and a meeting of the minds between Jon Batiste and Gucci Mane.

Updated 12/22/2023 with details on shortlisted A Still Small Voice. Updated with quotes, 1:37 Pm: American Symphony, the Obamas-executive produced documentary about Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste, scored a remarkable hat trick today as the Oscar shortlists were revealed, but a couple of documentary icons were left on the bench.
In more headlines from the announcement, a beloved documentary filmmaker who died unexpectedly in August earned a place on the nonfiction feature shortlist. And the film about cherished actor Michael J. Fox, directed by Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim, made the list. Two films earned double recognition – making shortlists for doc feature and International Feature Film. [See full shortlists for doc feature and doc short below].
Suleika Jouad and Jon Batiste in ‘American Symphony’
The most eye-popping takeaway is the recognition for American Symphony, the Netflix film directed by Oscar nominee Matthew Heineman and produced by Higher Ground, the production company of former President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. It made the...

In the aftermath of Thursday morning’s announcement of shortlists for 10 Oscar categories, here are my main takeaways…

1) The Academy
Has there ever been a best original song shortlist more stacked than this one?
Among the shortlisted songwriters are Billie Eilish and Finneas (“What Was I Made For?” from Barbie), Olivia Rodrigo (“Can’t Catch Me Now” from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Jon Batiste (“It Never Went Away” from American Symphony) and Dua Lipa (“Dance the Night” from Barbie) — in other words, people behind half of the nominees for the song of the year Grammy that will be presented on Feb. 4 — plus Mark Ronson (“I’m Just Ken” from Barbie), A$AP Rocky (“Am I Dreaming” from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), Lenny Kravitz (“Road to Freedom” from Rustin) and Halle Bailey (“Keep It Movin'” from The Color Purple), among others.

Director Matthew Heineman has made a name for himself covering warzones in narrative film (A Private War) and most prominently in documentary. I don’t blame him for stepping back just this once and making a movie about a charming musician and his rise to zeitgeist prominence. The film is American Symphony about Jon Batiste, a soft lob of a tribute that somewhat perversely is the film that could very well win him an Academy Award. Even documentarians can follow the same tried-and-tested path. I just wish I liked it more.
Batiste is 37 years old. American Symphony doesn’t say this stat outright as far as I recall, but it goes to great pains to make the audience very well aware that he is some sort of wunderkind. A Juilliard graduate who landed a big break as bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and...

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.
The Bruce Springsteen song from “She Came to Me,” Golden Globe-nominated, is also missing from Oscar’s preliminary list, as are the *Nsync reunion on a song from...

Jon Batiste stopped by The Late Show to showcase a rousing rendition of his Grammy-nominated song “Worship.” The musician performed the track with a live band and a dynamic group of back-up singers who brought an upbeat, celebratory vibe to the late-night stage.
“Worship” appears on Batiste’s seventh studio album, World Music Radio, released in August. The LP followed his hit 2021 album, We Are, which famously won several Grammys, including Album of the Year. Batiste is again nominated for a bunch of Grammys this year, including Album of the Year,...
