The live-action feature nominees for the 57th annual Cas Awards for sound mixing (presented virtually on April 17) include “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, also split the Motion Picture Sound Editors nominations with Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World,” with three nods.
Not making the cut, though, was Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” the time inversion spy thriller, which was roundly criticized for mixing its dialogue way too low. Also overlooked was George Clooney’s sci-fi drama, “The Midnight Sky,” though the director will be honored as Cas Filmmaker.
In terms of the Oscar race, the Academy has consolidated sound editing and mixing onto a single category for the first time this season.
Seven-time Oscar-nominated sound mixer William B. Kaplan is this year’s Cas Career Achievement Honoree.

Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal” and Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World” western each grabbed three sound editing nominations at the 68th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (which will be held virtually on April 16). “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, captures Riz Ahmed’s heavy-metal drummer slowly losing his hearing, while “News of the World” creates the shootouts, sandstorms, and rainstorms that assault Tom Hanks on his journey in post-Civil War Texas. The Academy has consolidated sound editing and mixing onto a single category for the first time this season.
Several features scored two nominations: “Tenet,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and “Greyhound.” Also making the cut were “Mank,” “The Midnight Sky,” “The Invisible Woman,” “Nomadland,””Wonder Woman 1984,” “Emperor,” and “Cherry.”

The 20th Century fanfare. The Thx Deep Note. The MGM lion’s roar. Iconic sounds have long been part of branding in the film industry. So when Netflix started creating original movies and shows, executives knew creating a sonic logo would be a crucial piece of their efforts — one that almost resulted in the company being forever associated with a bleating goat.
A recent episode of the “Twenty Thousand Hertz” podcast took a deep dive into the yearlong effort to create what Netflix terms the “ta-dum” sound — the short piece of sound that plays along with the Netflix logo before the company’s original series and films. The project was headed by Tod Yellin, the streamer’s VP of product, who said he sought to commission a sound that “makes you think of ‘Wow, I’m going to get a treat, I’m about to get an amazing story, that’s relevant to me,...

1. "The Revenant": The sound team (led by sound editors Martin Hernandez and Lon Bender and mixers Jon Taylor, Frank Montaño, Randy Thom and Chris Duesterdiek) brilliantly make nature a sonic character and immerse us in Leonardo DiCaprio’s intense journey in the most effective way. They found existing sounds (bear vocalizations, trees creaking in the wind) and recorded them in real, appropriate locations. The opening Native American ambush has a natural ebb and flow and a nice lull between the action, with the sound of footsteps, wind blowing in the trees, and distant dogs barking in between each flurry of arrows. Plus, the incredible bear attack was sonically underplayed for greater realism, and getting the breathing right — using the sound of a sick horse toward the end when the bear is injured, for example — was just as important as the vocalizations. And what was that weird, mantra-like sound effect?...

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just announced there nominations and there’s quite a lot to process, so let’s start from the top. Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ gorgeous relationship drama Carol have tied for the lead with nine nominations apiece, with both films receiving nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (in their respective categories). Not far behind is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s revenge epic The Revenant with eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Editing.
What may come as a surprise to some is that Adam McKay’s comedy-drama about the 2008 financial crisis did rather well. It may have only received five nominations, but they were all major nods: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and Best Editing. Meanwhile, the film that has...

1. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens": In keeping with J.J. Abrams' old-and-new hybrid philosophy, the esteemed team of Gary Rydstrom, Dave Acord, Chris Scarabosio, Will Files, Matt Wood, and Andy Nelson not only made use of Ben Burtt’s iconic sounds from the original trilogy but also new ones that he created. The result once again instilled a sense of the familiar with the uniquely futuristic. Thus, Kylo Ren's cool-looking lightsaber sounds unstable, just like his volatile temperament, which makes it seem even more dangerous, while Bb-8 sounds funnier than R2-D2 (thanks in part to vocal assistance by Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz). 2. "The Revenant": The team (led by supervising editors Lon Bender, Randy Thom and Martin Hernandez) brilliantly make nature a sonic character and immerse us in Leonardo DiCaprio's intense journey in the most effective way. They found existing sounds (bear vocalizations, trees creaking in the wind) and recorded them.

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

Just when you thought the news of an Anchorman sequel would wash away all the talk of The Hunger Games, we’ve got more fun stuff from the movie on fire. The talented folks at the Soundworks Collection have profiled the sound team behind the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ popular novel, with director Gary Ross, Supervising Sound Editor Lon Bender, Re-recording Mixer Michael Keller, and Re-recording mixer Mike Prestwood Smith weighing in on giving sound to the landscapes of this futuristic young adult battle to the death. As a film, The Hunger Games accomplishes just as much with quiet as it does with sound and score, a delicate balance that can be credited to Bender and team. Because a good sound editor knows when to make noise and when to stay still. It’s a fascinating featurette for those who want to see behind the curtain on one of Hollywood’s hottest new films. Watch...

The most interesting part of the latest Soundworks Collection featurette taking a look at the sound design of The Hunger Games is the focus on the Foley work, primarily the use of the iPad giving foley artist Catherine Harper (Drive) the ability to watch the film while they recorded sound for the arena environment. The video features comments from Supervising Sound Editor Lon Bender (Drive), Re-recording Mixer Michael Keller (Green Lantern) and Re-recording Mixer Mike Prestwood Smith (Green Lantern) and I'd be curious to hear how outdoor foley effects were recorded before the iPad. Clearly they could have mimicked the outdoor environment indoors or set up a screen or television outside to record the effects, but just in watching the video it is clear Catherine Harper is able to move more freely with the film right there in her hands as she attempts to precisely mimic the footsteps of the actors on screen.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.
Here's the full list of nominees with the winners in bold.

If, for some crazy reason, you weren't glued to your TV last night watching the Oscars, here's a quick rundown of what you missed: not much. As expected, The Artist ended up winning most of the major awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, although Hugo managed to snag a lot of the technical awards. In the end, they finished in a tie with 5 wins a piece. The only real surprise of the night was Meryl Streep's Best Actress win over Viola Davis for her performance in The Iron Lady. Other than that, it was somewhat a yawn-inducing show, with Billy Crystal doing a serviceable but unremarkable job as host. I think the clear highlight of the night came on the red carpet where Sacha Baron Cohen "accidentally" spilled Kim Jong-Il's ashes on Ryan Seacrest. Were you happy with this year's Academy Award winners? What did you think of the show overall?...

Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

Tomorrow is the day where the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences celebrates the movies. We’ve waited all year and its finally here. By the time host Billy Crystal delivers his last punchline and concludes the 84th Academy Awards, the evening will have seen many celebrity-presenters appear on the Oscar stage at the Kodak Theatre.
Here’s my predictions for Hollywood’s big night.
Actor in a Leading Role
Demián Bichir in .A Better Life.
George Clooney in .The Descendants.
Jean Dujardin in .The Artist.
Gary Oldman in .Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Brad Pitt in .Moneyball.
Clooney’s performance was like none other he’s given before and with Slumdog Millionaire, Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Fox Searchlight is on a roll. However, The Artist’s Dujardin will take home his first Academy Award.
Possible upset – Brad Pitt is an all around good guy...

The 84th Academy Awards will pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. The perceived Oscar frontrunner, .The Artist,. is a black-and-white silent movie, while one of the Oscar Best Picture contenders, .Hugo,. touches upon the life of Georges Méliès and his magical .Trip to the Moon. (1902). Even Marilyn Monroe is being honored via a Best Actress nomination for Michelle Williams who played the icon in .My Week with Marilyn..
Amidst the glamour and the spectacle, this is one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent memory. There is no clear-cut favorite. Even the awards darling .The Artist. may lose its voice on Oscar night. But I am marching forward to reveal my fearless 2012 Oscar predictions. (Read after the jump for my complete predictions on 24 categories, watch the video for the majors!)

Here’s a glimpse inside the Oscar Nominees Luncheon for the 84th Academy Awards which took place in Beverly Hills, California, Monday, February 6, 2012. The 84th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. On the menu was chopped vegetable salad, roasted Asian barbecued duck, soy-mirin seared Atlantic Salmon and a trio of sorbets in a chocolate cup.
Anne Thompson reported, “Oscarcast co-producer Brian Grazer promised a classy show. Filming of the Billy Crystal intro skit is under way (along with interviews with many of the nominees) — “everyone is in the film,” he said. The Kodak Theatre stage will be dressed like an old-time movie palace to sell the theme of going out to the movies. “Seeing films in that environment is a magnifier of how you feel emotionally,” he said. “You’ll feel like...

Who would have have guessed that two of Albert Brooks' most die-hard fans are the unlikely pair of Russell Crowe and Adolf Hitler. And they're both mad as hell at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members who have bypassed Brooks in the Best Supporting Actor category for his critically acclaimed performance as a nasty gangster in Nicolas Winding Refn's thriller Drive. On January 25, the Gladiator Academy Award winner and Man of Steel co-star Russell Crowe tweeted: "[Drive's] Ryan Gosling didn't get an Academy nomination? There's some bullshit right there." He then added, "Albert Brooks you were excellent in Drive. Excellent." Now, Crowe's reaction to Brooks' omission from the Academy Awards' Best Supporting Actor shortlist was nothing compared to that of Hitler. The German Führer was particularly galled that Moneyball's Jonah Hill managed to sneak in, considering that Hill had Superbad stolen from him by Michael Cera.

Yesterday, Jennifer Lawrence took the podium – tough Katniss on The Capitol interview stage-style - to perform the 2012 Academy Award nominations reading, but that's just a drop in the bucket when it comes to "The Hunger Games" Oscar connections.
In fact, between the cast and filmmakers, we counted more than two dozen Oscar nominations and quite a few wins. Who knew these gamekeepers, so to speak, were so accomplished?!
This list should tell you just what caliber of talent is involved in "The Hunger Games," both on and off-screen.
Jennifer Lawrence: 1
Katniss herself, Jennifer Lawrence, was one of 2010's Best Actress nominees for her work as Ree in "Winter's Bone," and while she didn't win, she sure turned some heads and clenched her spot on the list of must-watch young actresses early in her career thanks to it.
Josh Hutcherson: 0
Okay, so our future Peeta, Josh Hutcherson, didn't actually get any Academy Awards nominations,...

An Australian have been nominated for the 84th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards announced overnight, with one more likely to be announced.
Included in the Oscars nomination line up is Australian film editor Kirk Baxter with producer Grant Hill likely to be recognised also.
Baxter, who won last year for David Fincher’s The Social Network, has been nominated for his work on David Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Hill, producer of Terrence Mallick’s Tree of Life will most likely be nominated, with the film up for best picture, but the nominees yet to be determined. Hill was also a producer of Mallick’s Thin Red Line and the Wachowski brothers’ Matrix Trilogy and V for Vendetta.

This morning, Jennifer Lawrence and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. The winners will be announced during the televised ceremony on February 26, 2012. Let’s get right into the nominations:
Best Picture
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse
Snubs:
Bridesmaids
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Ides of March
50/50
Shame
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
The Artist and The Descendants may stack up on top alphabetically, but they’re neatly placed in this two-horse race with the B&W, silent era drama in the easy lead. An upset is possible, I suppose, but a Descendants win would be more upsetting since its one of the weakest in Payne’s career. Extremely Loud & Yada Yada comes as a huge surprise though. Chock it...

Update (January 30, 2012): Australian producer Grant Hill is one of four producers that will accept the Oscar should Terence Malick's Tree of Life win Best Picture. The film's nominees were originally listed as 'to be determined', following the Academy's decision that only a maximum of three producers would be recognised per best picture contender.
It was decided on Friday that Tree of Life represented 'extraordinary circumstances' and the rule was waived. Should the film upset popular contenders Hugo and The Artist, the Oscar will be accepted by Hill alongside fellow producers Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad and Dede Gardner.
Correction: Sound re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, who received his thirteen nomination for best achievement in sound for Steven Spielberg's War Horse, is in fact British. In 2001, Nelson received an Australian Centenary Medal for his services to Australian film production for his work on Moulin Rouge.
