The power of "Sweeney Todd" lies in its ability to seduce its audience to stare (and chortle) at the ingenuity of murderous cannibalism. Since its 1979 opening on Broadway (starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury), the darkly comic "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street" has been a general favorite of Stephen Sondheim's musicals (depending on who you ask). It exists at the intersection of traditional musical theatre and operetta, permitting a flexible theatricality from the small-scale (John Doyle's 2005 version and the 2017 Barrow Street immersive pie shop staging) to the grandiose opera stage. In the hands of "Hamilton" director Thomas Kail, "Sweeney Todd" stays true to its theatrical technicalities on the Broadway stage for the most part.
Inspired by the 1840s penny dreadful serial and Christopher Bond's 1973 stage retelling, Hugh Wheeler's book deals with injustice in 19th-century London. "Sweeney Todd" follows the eponymous barber who returns...

In a Broadway season that might be remembered for a lovely, pared-down minimalism – the intriguing starkness of A Doll’s House with Jessica Chastain, the less-is-more near-concert-style presentations of Into the Woods and Parade – director Thomas Kail’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will stand out for, among many other attributes, its full-on, unabashed ambition. A prodigious theatrical event that aims for greatness and achieves it, this revival of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler masterpiece is not to be missed.
With Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford leading a flawless, 25-member cast that also includes Stranger Things‘ Gaten Matarazzo, the revival, opening tonight at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, makes the case that Sweeney just might be Sondheim’s greatest work (at least until the next production of Sunday in the Park comes...

Two former leaders of MoviePass have been indicted on securities fraud charges for allegedly deceiving investors about the company’s business model and sustainability.
Theodore Farnsworth, the former CEO of parent company Helios & Matheson, and Mitchell Lowe, the former CEO of MoviePass, were each charged with one count of securities fraud and three counts of wire fraud.
MoviePass exploded in 2017 after it announced its all-you-can watch subscription plan, priced at 9.95 per month. The service quickly grew from 20,000 members to more than 3 million — but hemorrhaged money and eventually collapsed.
The charges, which were unsealed on Friday, echo the allegations filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission in a civil complaint on Sept. 27.
Both cases allege that Lowe and Farnsworth falsely claimed that their subscription model had been market tested and would be sustainable over the long run.

Former MoviePass CEOs Ted Farnsworth and Mitch Lowe and the ticketing app’s former parent company Helios & Matheson have been charged by the Department of Justice in a securities fraud case Friday, alleging that the executives “engaged in a scheme to defraud investors” and lied about MoviePass’ operations in order to inflate the parent company’s stock price and attract new investors.
Farnsworth and Lowe are each charged with one count of securities fraud and three counts of wire fraud. If convicted, they each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each count.
Farnsworth additionally surrendered himself to authorities in Washington D.C. on Friday following the charges, IndieWire has learned.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has sued former top execs at MoviePass and its parent company, Helios + Matheson, for fraud.
A complaint filed this week with the U.S. District Court for New York’s southern district (read it here) centers on Ted Farnsworth and Mitch Lowe. They “intentionally and repeatedly disseminated to the public materially false or misleading statements concerning MoviePass and key aspects of MoviePass’s business model,” the suit says. The duo allegedly misled investors by suggesting the company could profit by offering all-you-can eat moviegoing for just 9.95 a month.
The digital movie ticketing firm sought to popularize fixed-price ticket buying, a tool widely used in many international markets, but ran afoul of major exhibitors and then its customers after deciding to offer an unsustainable monthly price. After slashing the monthly price from its previous levels of 40 to 50 a month, the company still had to fulfill customer orders for tickets.

MoviePass was founded on a lie, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged in a complaint filed on Monday night.
The company introduced its 9.95-a-month, all-you-can-watch subscription plan in August 2017. According to the complaint, executives Theodore Farnsworth and Mitch Lowe knew that the offer was just a “marketing gimmick” and that the price was unsustainably low.
But in public, they claimed that they had done rigorous market testing and determined they could turn a profit. In fact, they had done no testing, the SEC said. Asked by Variety if the company would eventually have to raise its prices, Farnsworth said, “The answer is no.” Critics, he went on, “don’t understand our business model.”
Helios and Matheson Analytics, the parent company of MoviePass, would go bankrupt after burning through hundreds of millions of dollars. According to the SEC, Farnsworth and Lowe repeatedly lied to the public about the MoviePass business model and then,...

The former MoviePass leadership is not getting a pass on fraud charges.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against former MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe and Ted Farnsworth, the former CEO of MoviePass’ parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics (Hmny), for allegedly misleading investors under the 9.99 per month moviegoing subscription.
As reported by Insider, the SEC filing claimed Lowe and Farnsworth “devised fraudulent tactics” to hide information and “falsely and misleadingly” led the public to believe their site was unsuccessful in subscribers to save money.
“Faced with debilitating negative cash flows — rather than tell the public the truth — Farnsworth and Lowe devised fraudulent tactics to prevent MoviePass’s heavy users from using the service, and falsely and misleadingly informed the public that usage had declined naturally or due to measures the company had employed to combat subscribers’ purported violations of MoviePass’s terms and conditions of service,” the complaint stated.

A revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford could land on Broadway this Spring, with the team behind Hamilton – producer Jeffrey Seller and director Thomas Kail – attached, according to a published report.
The production – reported exclusively today by Philip Boroff’s Broadway Journal site – would be the latest in a string of Sondheim revivals staged since the Broadway icon’s death on Nov. 21, 2021. Revivals of Company and Into The Woods arrived on Broadway this season, and a new Off Broadway staging of Merrily We Roll Along starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez begins previews at New York Theatre Workshop on Nov. 21, with an official opening on Dec. 12.
Groban, who starred in the 2016 Broadway production of the musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, would play the Sweeney Todd title character, with Ashford, as Mrs. Lovett.
According to Broadway Journal, an operating agreement distributed to investors indicates that producer Seller is attempting to raise 14.5 million for the revival.
Seller was not available for comment Tuesday. Deadline has also reached out to reps for Groban and Ashford.
Sweeney Todd – full title: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – features music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, based on an earlier play of the same name by Christopher Bond. The musical debuted on Broadway in 1979 in a production starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury. It has been revived several times on and Off Broadway.
Groban recorded one of the musical’s most beloved songs, “Not While I’m Around,” in a medley with Into The Woods‘ “Children Will Listen,” on his 2015 album Stages. He also performed the medley during the virtual concert Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration in 2020.
Set in Victorian London, Sweeney Todd tells the penny dreadful tale of a murderous, revenge-seeking barber and his pie-baking accomplice Mrs. Lovett, who uses her culinary skills to dispose of bothersome corpses.

This year’s Oscars telecast incorporated reunions of cast members from classic movies such as “The Godfather,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Juno.” Last year’s Tony Awards actually did something similar, bringing together cast members from different Broadway classics such as “Hairspray,” “Ragtime,” “Rent,” and “Wicked” for performances as the industry was fighting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the Tonys will be presenting their landmark 75th annual ceremony this year, I think it would be even more fitting if they reunite more co-stars from Broadway classics of yesteryear to perform or even present awards. Here are some suggestions. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see.

I spent my Halloween attending the tale of Sweeney Todd. Though I did go out later (I’m not a total shut-in), most of my day consisted of watching four versions of the Stephen Sondheim’s razor sharp musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street back to back to back to back. (There was a fifth version I’d planned to watch, but it was taken offline before I had the chance.) After watching three different stage adaptations (a 1982 recording of the 1979 original production with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn, a 2000 concert version with Patti LuPone and George Hearn, and a bootleg recording of the 2005 revival directed by John Doyle with Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris), I arrived at my final stop: Tim Burton’s film adaptation from 2007. Having seen it, and thoroughly adored it, for several years, my revisiting of the film was, to say the least,...

The director of the cult stage hit Evil Dead: The Musical have a new live show in the works... and this time, they've set their sights on the granddaddy of modern zombie cinema: George Romero's original Night of the Living Dead.
The new show, appropriately titled George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead Live, is not a musical itself, but an interactive stage experience in which the zombie action crosses over into the audience. In a particularly cool touch, it's also designed entirely in black & white – from the set design to the actors' makeup and wardrobe – to replicate the look of the original 1968 film. Romero himself, along with Notld alumni Russell Streiner and John Russo (pictured below), serve as Executive Producers for the play, which is the creation of Christopher Harrison and Phil Pattinson, presented by Nictophobia Films (Vs. the Dead, Devil's Night) and directed by Christopher Bond, who previously wrote and directed Evil Dead: The Musical.

Nictophobia Films' Christopher Harrison and Phil Pattison are a unique team.
They got their start together producing the Stephen King film The Man Who Loved Flowers, which led to the release of Phil's debut feature: grindhouse zombie film Vs. the Dead. Oh those wacky Canadians. The crew behind Evil Dead: The Musical have decided to raise another horror classic from the dead: Night of the Living Dead. That's right, a live (undead?) stage play is coming to Toronto in 2013. Christopher Bond will direct the book by Trevor Martin and Dale Boyer, and NotLD director George Romero (along with the film's original writer and producer John Russo and Russ Streiner) have signed on as executive producers. Check out a trailer after the jump. The producers of the show promise that, like the film, the play will be in black and white (makeup, stage design, costumes) It will be interactive, with zombies wandering the theater, but keeping things "PG" so all ages...

The undead are coming, rising up from their graves to walk once again among the living. But this time they're not appearing on screens, no. This time they will be shambling across the stage, up close and personal in the upcoming Canadian stage adaptation of George A Romero's Night Of The Living Dead.Directed by Evil Dead: The Musical's Christopher Bond from a script by Trevor Martin and Dale Boyer, the idea of a live version of the undead classic came from the minds of Christopher Harrison and Phil Pattison who - thanks to the efforts of David Daniloff of Daniloff Productions - would soon be joined by NotLD writer and producer John Russo and Russ Streiner as well as George A. Romero himself, who...

O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we'll soon see the dead rise in Casey Walker's Little Bit Zombie.
Confused? It's just a little bit of news about the next project from Canada featuring the undead: Little Bit Zombie starring Crystal Lowe ("Smallville"), Kristopher Turner ("Instant Star"; pictured right), and Shawn Roberts (Resident Evil: Afterlife), in which Turner plays a company exec who becomes infected by a virus during a bachelor party, forced to avoid an obsessed zombie hunter and his Bridezilla-to-be (Lowe).
Per The Hollywood Reporter the indie genre film from Cave Painting Pictures, to shoot in June in Sudbury, Ontario, will also star Kristen Hager ("Being Human" Us), Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, Immortals), and Neil Whitely (Red, Repo Men). Christopher Bond and Trevor Martin wrote the film’s script while director Walker shares a producer credit with John Griffith.

Crystal Lowe, Kristopher Turner, Shawn Roberts, Kristin Hager, Stephen McHattie and Neil Whitely are set to star in the Canadian production Little Bit Zombie . This is the latest zombie picture Roberts can add to his resume. You may recall he appeared in Land of the Dead , starred in Diary of the Dead and Resident Evil: Afterlife . Directed by Casey Walker, the film concerns a biz exec who attends a bachelor party. Rather than pick up an Std, he's hit with a virus that turns him into a zombie. His undead life takes a turn, obviously, when he has to start avoiding his bride-to-be and a zombie hunter. Christopher Bond and Trevor Martin penned the script.
