There’s an old adage that says you should never meet your heroes — but whoever came up with that didn’t know Stuart Gordon.
The director known for such cult classics as “Re-Animator,” “From Beyond” and “Dolls” died Tuesday night in Van Nuys, Calif., from multiple organ failure at age 72. He is survived by his brother, David George Gordon, his wife, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon; daughters Suzanna, Jillian and Margaret Gordon; four grandchildren and a countless number of fans and protégés who adored the worlds and characters he brought to life.
It’s a very strange thing to find yourself friends with a man you grew up idolizing. Usually I don’t recommend it; it’s asking for disappointment. I have no idea what prompted me to first rent that VHS copy of “Re-Animator” with friends in high school; it probably had something to do with the bright green color on the box,...

How will the heist film classic translate to the small screen? NBC is planning to find out...
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that NBC has given a script commitment to a TV series based on The Italian Job. The show will follow a found family of expert criminals who come out of retirement to try to save their beloved patriarch from jail. Like the previous films, the TV show will feature the character of Charlie Croker at its centre, a criminal trying to go straight, but who can't help but get pulled back into this adrenaline-fuelled world of high-stakes crime. You know how it is.
Unlike the movies, it seems that the show will feature a prison break rather than a heist. But, hey, who says we can't have both? According to the report, the show hopes to "preserve the action, humour, romance and picturesque international locales from the movies.

Based on my experiences at his previous theater offerings here in Los Angeles over the last few years, I knew I was going to be in for a delectable time with Stuart Gordon’s latest play, Taste, which opens this weekend at the Sacred Fools Theatre Company (660 N. Heliotrope, Hollywood) and runs through May 17, 2014. A gut-wrenching and often times horrifying exploration of isolation and what it means to truly connect with others, Taste is a truly haunting experience.
Loosely based on the real-life incident where two men found each other on Craigslist so that one could be cannibalized by the other, Taste follows two men named Vic (Chris L. McKenna) and Terry (Donal Thoms-Cappello). After befriending each other online, they meet for a gruesomely unique dinner party with Vic wanting to be cooked and consumed by his new pal and Terry, an aspiring chef, happily agreeing to go along with the plan.

Exclusive: Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are behind NBC‘s upcoming live staging of The Sound Of Music, are developing another ambitious event program for the network. The duo has teamed with NBC for Nemesis, an eight-hour miniseries about famous Prohibition agent Eliot Ness, who was portrayed by Kevin Costner in Brian Fe Palma’s Oscar-winning The Untouchables. The project, from Sony Pictures TV — where Zadan and Meron’s Storyline Entertainment has a long-form deal — is based on the book Nemesis: The Final Case Of Eliot Ness by William Bernhardt. It tells the true story of Ness in 1935, post-Untouchables, as Cleveland’s newly appointed Director of Public Safety. Bodies have started turning up — each one decapitated and dissected with a doctor’s skill and a madman’s bent. The police are baffled and the population is terrorized over America’s first serial killer, the so-called “Torso Killer.” Though it’s not his turf,...

Written by Christine Zander (Raising Hope), Raising Mom is inspired by Vergara’s experiences raising her son and follows a young single mom and her 21-year-old son who discover that they have done a pretty good job of raising each other, only now they decide it might be time to gain some independence. The idea for the show was conceived by Balaguer from observing Vergara’s relationship with her son during the more than 20 years he has been producing partners with the Colombian-born actress. Stuart Gordon, the writer-director of the 1985 adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Re-Animator and the ensuing stage musical, is busy developing Taste for the theatre. The play is based on the true story of the Rotenburg Cannibal, Armin Meiwes, and will focus on the headline making (not to mention recorded) dinner with/of Bernd Jürgen Brandes. Meiwes became famous for killing and eating the willing victim he solicited on the internet and Variety is reporting that Gordon plans to shoot a feature film version after the play's first run. Gordon is currently casting the play and plans to use the same actors for the feature film version produced by his Red Hen production company in partnership with Adam Goldworm Aperture Entertainment. The pair will finance the 'micro-budget project' themselves with Benjamin Brand set to adapt his own play for the big-screen. Or VOD (that's just my guess). Brand's previous credits ...

Stuart Gordon, director of the funny/scary/gross-out classic Re-Animator, will helm a big-screen adaptation of Benjamin Brand‘s real-life-inspired cannibal play, Taste. [Variety]
Taste is based on the so-called Rotenburg Cannibal — or, Armin Meiwes — who met a young man in a cannibal-fantasy Internet chatroom, killed him, and proceeded, as cannibals do, to consume his corpse. (Evidently this is a thing.)
Gordon and Adam Goldworm will produce and self-finance the project on a microbudget. Brand will be adapting his own play, a joint venture between the director’s Red Hen shingle and the the producers Aperture Entertainment. The former is currently searching about for actors, and will reportedly include some of the play’s cast.
In 2001, Meiwes feasted on a willing participant for his kill-someone-and-eat them fetish after a string of no-gos; at least several of the previous candidates had a fantasy so bizarre that even Meiwes was turned off. I have not seen this play,...

We recently learned that Stuart Gordon would be directing a cannibal-themed stage production titled Taste, but he also has plans to turn it into a full-length feature film. According to a new report from Variety, the film will shoot late next year after the first run of the stageplay and will include the same cast.
Taste is written by Benjamin Brand and is said to be based on the true story of Armin Meiwes. Referred to as the Rotenburg Cannibal, he “achieved international notoriety for killing and eating a voluntary victim whom he had found via the Internet.” This project will be a microbudget production and there is no casting information at this time.
Stuart Gordon had a successful run with Re-Animator: The Musical and talked about trying to horrify audiences onstage with his latest production: “It’s rare that real horror is done onstage… Re-Animator’ the musical is more comedic than scary.

NEW YORK -- Anne Archer, James LeGros and Nora Dunn are in negotiations to join Courteney Cox Arquette in helmer Greg Harrison's feature November for IFC's InDigEnt banner. The project follows Los Angeles photographer Sophie Jacobs (Cox Arquette), who has trouble coping after her boyfriend is tragically shot to death in a convenience store robbery. As Sophie struggles to put the event behind her, her life begins to splinter, and the line between fantasy and reality becomes blurred. The producers are being tight-lipped about what roles the new trio will take to protect the film's twists and turns. November was penned by Benjamin Brand. Danielle Renfrew, Gary Winick and Jake Abraham are producing the project, which begins shooting next month. "Courteney and the rest of the actors announced today are truly an ideal cast for November, and we are extremely excited to begin production," said Caroline Kaplan, IFC Prods. senior vp production and development. Kaplan is executive producing November with IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring. Archer is repped by WMA. LeGros is repped by IFA Talent Agency. Dunn is repped by Innovative Artists. InDigEnt's Pieces of April, starring Katie Holmes, sold to United Artists at this year's Sundance Film Festival (HR 1/24).
