The Substance, a gruesome body-horror flick, had its world premiere Sunday night in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and was greeted with a nine-minute standing ovation from the crowd at the Grand Lumiere Theatre.
The sophomore directorial effort and English-language debut of the French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat — she also wrote, produced and edited the film — stars Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley (Qualley also appears in another competition title at this year’s fest, Kinds of Kindness), all of whom were on hand for the screening.
A gory fantasia that is a twisted cross between the classic films Sunset Boulevard and Freaks, it is one of the most out-there Cannes competition films since Titane — and, with the right mix of jurors, could follow that film to a major festival award, if not for the film, then perhaps for Moore.

Demi Moore hit the Cannes red carpet on Friday for the first time in nearly 30 years, having last attended with then-husband Bruce Willis for the premiere of The Fifth Element in 1997. This year is all about Moore as she has a film in the competition courtesy of Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance and official duties on behalf of Chopard.
It was the latter commitment that brought her to the Palais last night. Moore joined the luxury jeweler’s co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele and rising stars Mike Faist and Sophie Wilde ahead of the late-night Trophée Chopard gala ceremony at Carlton Beach. Moore was tapped to serve as the godmother of the festivities, a role that saw her take the stage and present the trophies, which are given to next-generation talents. Former French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterrand, who was a high-profile and sometimes controversial figure on France’s cultural scene, died on Thursday at the age of 76, his family announced.
Born in Paris in 1947 to a well-to-do family, Mitterrand was the nephew of President François Mitterrand.
His many activities across half a century included teacher, arthouse cinema owner, cinema and culture commentator, TV presenter, producer and documentary-maker.
He first gained notoriety on France’s cultural scene as the owner of the bohemian arthouse cinema L’Olympic in Paris’ then down-at-heel 14th arrondissement.
After a brief time as a geography and history teacher, he acquired the theater in 1971 at the age of 22 with the help of a loan from the father of one of his former pupils.
It took on a folkloric status for its mixed clientele of locals, cinephiles, neighborhood hoodlums, drag queens and the occasional film star and auteur director of the time.

Bras are out. Nipples are in. Saint Laurent’s fall/winter 2024-2025 runway show was the place to prove it. Several celebs, like Zoë Kravitz, went braless for the presentation. Others, like Olivia Wilde, bared it all through their sheer tops. Is it the year of the nipple? The stars say yes.

Zoë Kravitz exemplified a more understated version of the bra-less trend. The Batman star wore a very thin nut-brown tank top and a matching skirt. Her top was nearly sheer, showing off her curves.
Kravitz demonstrated the nipple-forward trend some believe was spurred by Skims’ nipple bra, which sold out in less than a month when it debuted in late 2023. With Kravitz’s natural accessories showing through, the 35-year-old donned a simple black belt, dangly earrings, sheet tights, and chocolate-colored pumps.

French prosecutors have dismissed a complaint by French actress Hélène Darras claiming she was sexually assaulted by Gérard Depardieu, citing the statute of limitations for the alleged crime.
Darras filed an official complaint against the 75-year-old French star, claiming Depardieu assaulted her on the set of Fabien Onteniente’s film Disco in 2007. Darras made her allegations public in an interview on French TV in December. The interview, combined with raw footage of Depardieu making sexually inappropriate and obscene jokes, triggered a public uproar in France that some have compared to the #MeToo movement that was galvanized by the testimonies of victims of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
Thirteen women have come forward to accuse Depardieu of sexual assault involving incidents spanning two decades. In February 2021, Depardieu was charged with rape and sexual assault allegedly committed in 2018 against actress Charlotte Arnould. “It is the sinister and perfect illustration of the world which refuses to let things change,” read the letter posted on the site of investigative news website Mediapart on Friday.

Fifty-six French stars, including Carla Bruni, Charlotte Rampling and Carole Bouquet, signed an open letter defending Gerard Depardieu, the Oscar-nominated actor who has been charged with rape and accused by more than a dozen other women of sexual assault, harassment or groping.
The essay, published in the conservative-leaning French newspaper Le Figaro, reads, in part: “We cannot remain silent in the face of the lynching targeting him, the torrent of hate being dumped on his personality” (via AP). “When Gerard Depardieu is targeted this way, it is the art [of cinema] that is being attacked. … Depriving ourselves of this immense actor would be a drama, a defeat. The death of the art. Our art.”
Other signatories included actors Pierre Richard, Victoria Abril and Nathalie Baye, and directors Bertrand Blier and Francis Veber.
Depardieu has not been convicted in connection with any of the allegations and denies wrongdoing. He called the open letter “beautiful” and its signatories “courageous,...

Some 50 French entertainment personalities have signed an open letter speaking out against the public “lynching” and cancelling of Gérard Depardieu in the wake of multiple accusations of sexual assault and one of rape.
The signatories include former first lady, top model and musician Carla Bruni as well as popular actors Charlotte Rampling, Carole Bouquet, Nathalie Baye and Pierre Richard.
The signatories said they did not want to pass comment on the accusations against Depardieu but could not remain silent in the face of the backlash against the actor in recent weeks.
“We are artists, writers and cinema producers. It’s in this capacity that we’re expressing ourselves here,” read the letter, published in Le Figaro newspaper on Christmas Day.
“We don’t want to enter into debate, and we leave the judiciary to do its job. Gérard Depardieu is probably one the greatest actors. One of the last sacred icons of cinema.

French luxury shoe brand Roger Vivier always provides immersive experiences when unveiling new collections, and the spring-summer 2024 season was no different. Themed “Les Éléments Vivier,” the collection spanned over four floors, highlighting art and the best shoe savoir-faire in Paris’ 8th district on Thursday.

As Hollywood actors and writers remain on strike, some headed east, all the way to Venice to join in the always glamorous Biennale Cinema 2023, also known as the Venice International Film Festival. Now in its 80th year, the festival is always a heady melange of fascinating movies making their world premieres, all mixed in with haute couture fashion, both on the red carpet and at annual fetes given by the world’s top labels.
And while many of the red-carpet moments are, sadly, happening without the A-list actors attending (as they honor their union’s strike), this year’s festival still brought its A game to the fashion scene, and independent productions that secured an interim agreement saw the likes of Adam Driver, Jessica Chastain and Cailee Spaeny able to celebrate the premieres of their films in Venice while still on strike.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival has cancelled its swanky Women in Cinema gala event at the upcoming Venice Film Festival in response to the ongoing actors’ strike.
Red Sea CEO Mohammed Al Turki announced the move on his Instagram account on Monday.
“Due to the actors’ strike and in solidarity with the actors. We are unable to proceed with the Women in Cinema event,” he wrote.
Venice, running from August 30 to September 9, is one of the first big film events to feel the heat of the actors’ strike, with original opening film Challengers pulled after its announcement due to the fact its key cast, topped by Zendaya, would be unlikely to attend.
Festival head Alberto Barbera has pulled together an impressive line-up nonetheless but it remains to be seen how much talent will be swilling around the Lido with little end in sight for the actors’ strike which began mid-July.

“It’s a family dinner.”
So said Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux close to 11 p.m. while standing on a well-list stage inside a starry Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach on Friday. It definitely had that feel — like a glamorous, diamond-drenched family reunion with a menu by two Michelin-starred chef Bruno Oger and performance by Juliette Armanet — as the luxury jeweler hosted the gathering to award a Trophee Chopard to both Daryl McCormack and Naomi Ackie as validation for their breakout status on the big-screen.
The room was filled with festival relatives in the form of this year’s jury — both competition and Un Certain Regard members like Ruben Östlund, Brie Larson, Paul Dano and John C. Reilly — and veteran attendees like Rossy de Palma and Carla Bruni. And then the official Cannes family like Fremaux, Iris Knobloch and Chopard’s Caroline Scheufele, representing the festival’s partner of more than two decades.

Last night’s Met Gala theme honored the late Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. The dress code simply read “In honor of Karl,” leaving it mostly up for interpretation for the celebrities attending — and their stylists.
While past Met Gala looks have spanned a spectrum of eccentricity, stars know better than to go oddball for the late designer and fashion icon, an effortless style enthusiast known for quotes like, “luxury is the ease of a T-shirt in a very expensive dress.” Similarly, Coco Chanel — who founded the namesake fashion house that Karl creative directed for three decades — famously said, “Before you leave the house look in the mirror and remove one accessory.”

At the Musée Rodin, on a frigid cold Jan. 23 with highs in the 30s, the House of Dior unveiled their Spring Summer 2023 Haute Couture collection.
In a packed room of celebrities, buyers, media, top clients, and friends of the brand, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri unveiled a sartorial story inspired by American singer Josephine Baker. It was a presentation that paid homage to the breaking of racial barriers, which artist Mickalene Thomas sought to capture in the show’s staging. The room was surrounded by large images on the walls of Baker and other icons from Dorothy Dandridge, Eartha Kitt and Nina Simone to pianist Hazel Scott and models Naomi Sims and Donyale Luna.
Sitting front row were film director Baz Luhrmann and his Oscar-award winning costume and producer designer wife Catherine Martin. The Elvis director said of the collection, “It was elegant and glamorous and beautiful. The designs in...

French-Italian actress Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi has denounced media reports revealing that actor Sofiane Bennacer is under investigation following allegations of rape and violence, saying he is the victim of a “media lynching”.
Bennacer starred in Bruni-Tedeschi’s Cannes 2022 Palme d’Or contender Forever Young, a semi-autobiographical drama inspired by her experiences as a student at the Les Amandiers theatre school in Nanterre in the 1980s.
French media reported earlier this week that Bennacer had been placed under judicial control in October.
The measure prevents him from entering the Paris region as well as contacting accusers and witnesses in the affair. Bruni-Tedeschi has been named as one of the witnesses.
The news broke just days after Bennacer was announced on November 16 as being among the 32 young actors selected for the 2023 edition of France’s César Academy Revelations talent showcase.

The red carpet throng at the Cannes Film Festival where mask discipline has been observed to be lax Photo: Courtesy of Cannes Film Festival Cannes Film Festival’s supremo Thierry Frémaux has reiterated the strict Covid regulations after lapses in the protocols about wearing masks on the red carpet and in the main screening rooms in the Palais des Festivals.
There had been complaints about stars making the traditional kisses and hugs on the red carpet, and of masks being lowered during the screenings.
“I remind the audience that masks are the rule of the day by law, and they guarantee that the festival will reach its end safely, “ said Frémaux, who himself had been spotted as being less than scrupulous.
Photos and videos were posted on social media showing audiences without masks while some onlookers noted that stars including Jessica Chastain and Carla Bruni were seen kissing and embracing against the social distancing rules.

Sure, Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid are the stylish sisters we've come to know and love on the catwalk, but it looks like there's been a missing sister all along—supermodel Carla Bruni! The similarity had Bruni wondering if she has another child. "Do I have a hidden daughter?" the songstress captioned the photo on social media. The two women look nearly identical, so much so that it even got the attention of Bella's real...

Gianni Versace Muse Cindy Crawford 'Will Definitely Watch' the American Crime Story About His Murder
The most highly-anticipated show of the new year is undoubtedly The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Ryan Murphy’s take on designer Gianni Versace’s 1997 murder outside his Miami mansion. The designer was known for championing supermodels in his campaigns and shows, and one of his frequent collaborators, Cindy Crawford, will be tuning in to see the TV adaptation of her late friend’s life – and death.
“I will definitely watch the show,” Crawford told People at Miami’s Art Basel in December. “I did many campaigns for Versace. Gianni loved women and wanted them to feel good.

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of Gianni, Donatella Versace is reminding the world of her brother's influence with a tribute collection, featured during the 2017 Milan Fashion Week and, as of today, the brand's latest ad campaign. Like the runway show that closed with icons Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen and Carla Bruni in sparkling gold gowns, the star-studded ad campaign is history-making...and a beautiful blast from our '90s past. In the campaign, Donatella not only showcases Gianni's muse, Naomi, one of the women that coined the term "supermodel"—a...

American Crime Story appears to be honoring the legacy that Gianni Versace left on the fashion industry.
In the latest teaser for The Assassination of Gianni Versace, a number of models are seen walking the runway in a haunting manner as Gianni, portrayed by Édgar Ramírez, talks over the fashion show.
"My shows must be about life," he proclaims as a Kate Moss look-alike hits the catwalk. "Life is precious."
Gunshots are then heard as the models stop mid-walk and a newscaster is heard announcing that the 50-year-old designer has been murdered at the hands of Andrew Cunanan, played by Darren Criss.
"Who will stop this murder spree?" another reporter is heard asking as we see a model crying on the runway.
Last month, the first trailer was released for Versace, which offered fans a first look at Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace, Ramírez as Gianni, Ricky Martin as the designer's longtime partner, Antonio D'Amico, and Criss as...

Donald Trump is reportedly a man of few friends — and he may have one less than he claims.
