In Hulu’s Shardlake, as in Arthurian legend, a hand emerges from a body of water bearing a sword. Though lacking Excalibur’s magical touch, this blade’s discovery does serve the ambitions of a monarch. After splitting England from the Catholic Church in 1534, King Henry VIII and his chief minister, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), have begun dissolving monasteries across the realm and seizing their wealth. The decapitation of Cromwell’s representative (Michael Rivers) at an abbey near the remote, boggy town of Scarnsea presents an opportunity to advance that crusade, with Cromwell sending an odd couple of agents to investigate the incident, commanding them to find sufficient reason to shutter the order.
In the third episode, the monks watch in horror as endearingly determined lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) and Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle), the cocksure enforcer assigned to accompany him, find the submerged murder weapon on their grounds.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is an American Western series that premiered late last year. However, it has already received a very positive critical reception, earning an impressive 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming the most watched show worldwide on Paramount+.
The show is clearly destined for a series renewal. However, to the surprise of fans, the show's creators have stated that the second season is likely to be very different from the first.
What is Lawmen: Bass Reeves about?
The Western-themed show follows the story of real-life Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, the first African-American to hold the position in the Upper Midwest Territory. Also based on The Bass Reeves book trilogy by Sidney Thompson, the plot of each episode follows Reeves (played by David Oyelowo) as he goes from being held as a slave to becoming one of the most famous lawmen in history.

Michael Jackson‘s “Smooth Criminal” is Satanic. It’s not a song about Satan or the occult, but it is a song about a Satanist. The King of Pop worried this could cause controversy for multiple reasons. “Smooth Criminal” wasn’t one of the biggest hits from that era of Jackson’s career, but it produced a hit cover.
Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ was inspired by a killer who worshipped Satan
Jermaine Jackson was a member of The Jackson 5. In his 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael, Through a Brother’s Eyes, Jermaine noted the Al Capone theme of the “Smooth Criminal” video. “‘Smooth Criminal’ was actually inspired by a serial killer who spread fear throughout Los Angeles and San Francisco between 1984 and 1985,” Jermaine wrote.
“Richard Ramirez, a self-confessed devil worshipper, was the ‘Night Stalker’ who took 14 lives,” he added. “In most cases, he forced his way into people...

Phil Karlson’s The Scarface Mob was originally made as a two-part pilot for the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse anthology series before the 80-minute episodes were re-cut for theatrical release. Given the sterility of so much dramatic television in the 1950s, it’s hard to imagine Karlson—best known for hard-hitting noirs like Kansas City Confidential and The Phenix City Story—seeing the format as suitable for his style. But Desi Arnaz, a huge admirer of the latter film, promised Karlson no studio interference. And while The Scarface Mob’s story presents a clear battle between good and evil in the form of Eliot Ness (Robert Stack) and Al Capone’s (Neville Brand) Chicago bootlegging empire, Karlson’s gritty brutality finds its way on-screen as the film conflates the maniacal ruthlessness of both men’s actions.
Stack’s performance went a long way in cementing Ness’s legacy in the public imagination.

Being two of Hollywood’s most prominent actors, Kevin Costner and Robert De Niro once collaborated for their 1987 crime thriller The Untouchables. Among other famous faces starring in the film, there was the James Bond actor Sean Connery who appeared as Jim Malone in Brian De Palma’s film.

While the success of The Untouchables helped young Kevin Costner catapult his Hollywood fame and become one of the biggest stars of his era, the actor had a unique experience working with Robert De Niro. Despite being ever professional on set, Costner surprisingly struggled to work alongside De Niro. So much so that he even asked for Sean Connery’s help to sort out his issue.

Amidst the acclaim that The Godfather received from all fronts, there was one influential critic of the movie — Frank Sinatra. The beef between Sinatra and the film began even before the start of filming. The singer and actor believed that one character in Mario Puzo’s novel, that of Johnny Fontaine, was modeled after him. On one occasion, Sinatra had a heated confrontation about this with Puzo where he threatened the author.
Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone in The Godfather
However, his threats on another occasion did not seem to bother singer Al Martino, who played the brief role of Johnny Fontaine in the film. In the end, all the efforts of Frank Sinatra to ruin The Godfather became futile as the movie became the biggest hit in Hollywood upon release.

With Ron DeSantis conveniently out of the GOP primary race, Donald Trump set his sights on Nikki Haley, his nearest opponent who still trails him by double-digits in the polls. The former South Carolina governor and Trump cabinet member has recently questioned the former president’s mental fitness after he confused her name with Nancy Pelosi’s at a rally.
“Here in New Hampshire, Nikki Haley has made an unholy alliance with RINOs, Never Trumpers, Americans for No Prosperity,” Trump said, referring to Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group that endorsed Haley in December.

On Monday, Donald Trump claimed that he had won two Iowa caucuses despite the fact that he lost to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in 2016.
While leaving the Hotel Fort Des Moines ahead of this year’s caucus, the former president shared his confidence with reporters.
“We’re going to have a great night, and it’s a fantastic place,” Trump said. “We’ve won it twice, as you know. Two elections. I think we’re going to have a tremendous night tonight. The people are fantastic, and I’ve never seen spirit like they have, countrywide. But in Iowa, I’ve never seen spirit like that.”
Trump was the 2020 Iowa caucus against former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, garnering 97% of the vote.
In 2016, however, Cruz took the lead with 27.6% of the vote, edging out Trump’s 24.3%. The former president congratulated the senator before taking to social media and circulating fraud allegations.

On Saturday night, former President Donald Trump told a crowd in Iowa proudly that he’s been “indicted more than Al Capone.”
Capone, a legendary Prohibition-era Chicago mob boss, was ultimately charged with tax evasion because federal prosecutors couldn’t convict him on bigger charges.
The former president has started to use the line more frequently on the campaign trail.
Trump is the first former president to be charged with criminal activity on the state or federal level. He faces four indictments in four different jurisdictions. The charges include counts of fraud, keeping classified documents, Rico violations and scheming to interfere with the transfer of power to President Joe Biden.
He also faces a $370 million business fraud case, in which he delivered the closing arguments against the judge’s orders last week.
Trump now references his record with pride against Capone, noting that the infamous mob boss was only indicted once.

Armitage Trail's original novel "Scarface" was first published in 1930, and traces the rise and fall of the vicious gangster Tony "Scarface" Guarino, who took over the Chicago bootlegging underground during Prohibition. Clearly, Tony Guarino is an analog to Al Capone, and many true crime fans find it tantalizingly suspicious that Armitage Trail (real name: Maurice R. Coons) died of a heart attack at age 28, only six months after the publication of "Scarface." Coons, after all, had to hobnob with real gangsters in order to get ideas for his novel, and he would have been known in certain corners of the underground.
In 1932, director Howard Hawks made the first film version of "Scarface," starring Paul Muni as Antonio "Tony" Camonte. Hawks' film was well-received, with some critics citing its naturalness and lack of melodrama. Indeed, it was so natural and treated crime with such frankness that some markets refused to show it.

Following the success of the Narcos franchise, Netflix is diving headfirst back into another biographic series about the drug empire led by Griselda Blanco with Sofia Vergara. The new limited series, consisting of six episodes, is coming to Netflix globally in January 2024. Here’s what you need to know about Griselda.
News of the show first came about in November 2021, with Illuminerdi first reporting that a Narcos spin-off was in development with the same team. Days later, we also reported that the show was in development, and just a day after that, Netflix officially unveiled the title but was keen to stress that “there is no association or crossover between the shows.”
It’s taken a long time for Griselda to come to our screen. It reportedly took Latin World Entertainment eight years for the series to be picked up by a network.

“How to Become a Mob Boss” is a docuseries that revisits the lives of some of the most famous criminals in history.
Al Capone, Frank Lucas, Salvatore Riina, John Gotti, Whitey Bulger, or the renowned Pablo Escobar. Do they sound familiar, right? In this series narrated by Peter Dinklage, we’ll have the opportunity to relive the defining moments of these individuals who were all prominent leaders of criminal organizations. Without any scruples, they were able to establish crime as a lucrative business and a way of life.
The series is presented as a guidebook for climbing the corporate ladder, like a marketing manual that combines archival footage with animations and, above all, plenty of irony. The result is an engaging documentary about the lives of these criminals.

"You don't make $30 billion by accident." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for the latest Citizen Jones satirical doc series "How To" creation called How to Become a Mob Boss. It's arriving for streaming in a few weeks, if you've ever thought about throwing in the towel at your current job and become a king pin in your neighborhood. Peter Dinklage narrates through this satirical guide that delves into the rise and fall of history's most famous mob bosses, from Al Capone to Pablo Escobar, and their tactics for success. "As with 'How to Become a Tyrant' and 'How to Become a Cult Leader', we aim to help audiences recognize and guard against the tactics employed by these notorious individuals when they encounter them in their own leaders, and in the greater world." This looks like it should be a thrilling and engaging watch. I really dig the animation,...

The Joker has basically become as iconic as Batman himself in modern culture. These days, we're seeing just as much of The Clown Prince of Crime as we are of the Dark Knight, with "Joker 2" recently wrapping production and a fresh approach to the character from Barry Keoghan, who showed up in a scene from Matt Reeves' "The Batman" and could likely return in "The Batman: Part II."
Since Jack Nicholson's Jack Napier transformed into the iconic Batman villain in Tim Burton's "Batman" back in 1989, there have been several cinematic versions of The Joker, helping propel the character further into the public consciousness and raising his profile as an enduring pop culture figure. Of course, The Joker's history stretches much further back than the late-'80s. The infamous rogue has been a mainstay in the comics for more than 80 years, where he's been the focus of countless...

Clarence Avant, the judicious manager, entrepreneur, facilitator and adviser who helped launch or guide the careers of Quincy Jones, Bill Withers and many others and came to be known as the “Black Godfather” of music and beyond, has died. He was 92.
Avant, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles, according to a family statement released Monday.
Avant’s achievements were both public and behind the scenes, as a name in the credits, or a name behind the names. Born in a segregated hospital in North Carolina, he became a man of lasting and wide-ranging influence, in part by minding two pieces of advice from an early mentor, the music manager Joe Glaser: Never let on how much you know, and ask for as much money as possible, “without stuttering.”

There is at least one episode of almost every adventure TV show where the good guys and the bad guys team up to take on a greater threat, like when the 1990s syndicated “Untouchables” show saw Elliott Ness and Al Capone team up to catch a child murderer.

Geraldo Rivera’s 22-year run at Fox News appears to be coming to an end.
On Thursday afternoon, Rivera posted a video to his Twitter account filmed on a boat off the coast of Jones Beach in Long Island. In the video he told viewers, “I’ve been fired from The Five, and as a result of that I quit Fox.”
He added that he would elaborate on that decision on Fox & Friends on Friday morning.
Rivera said earlier this month that he was going to leave the 5 p.m. panel show, where he has been a regular panelist since last year. He had been expected to appear on Thursday’s episode.
“It’s been a great run and I appreciate having had the opportunity,” Rivera wrote at the time. “Being odd man out isn’t always easy. For the time being, I’m still Correspondent at Large.”

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

With his relationship with Fox News apparently souring, Geraldo Rivera is thinking about retirement, and said he will announce his next career move in a week on Twitter and “The Five,” the show he will exit next week.
Rivera posted on Twitter Friday that he had spoken to Brian Kilmeade on his Wabc radio show and said, “I am unsure about my next career move & will announce next Friday here on Twitter & Live on @TheFive whether I stay with Fox or do something else, with your support.”
The correspondent for the conservative news network, who was recruited by founder Roger Ailes in 2001, said June 30 will be his last appearance on the talk show.
While the post generated a few inevitable references to his ill-fated 1986 live excavation of Al Capone’s vault, most of the comments were positive.
Some followers suggested that the social media platform may be all the veteran journalist needs.

Remember “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”? No, not the opening sequence of “The Last Crusade” starring River Phoenix as a teenage version of Harrison Ford’s iconic archeologist. We’re talking about the short-lived ’90s series starring Sean Patrick Flanery as the title character. The two-season curiosity has been mostly left behind in its decade, but now Disney has acknowledged it — and is putting it on Disney+, no less.
The news was announced out of The Walt Disney Company’s Upfronts Presentation on Tuesday afternoon. The show will be available to stream on Disney+ starting May 31, in anticipation of the release of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in theaters next month. In addition, all four of the initial “Indiana Jones” movies — “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Temple of Doom,” “The Last Crusade,” and “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” — will also be added to the streamer, after...

Did you correctly guess the killer, Ghosts fans?
Everything has led to this moment. The ongoing murder mystery finally revealed its big twist on Ghosts Season 2 Episode 21.
We had the clues and the suspects, but now we have the answer. It was a shocking finish to the case and an exciting start to where Ghosts could go.
"Whodunnit" was a fast-paced end to wrap up the long-awaited mystery. We got a lot of information quickly, and unlike Jay, we didn't have a cool red string murder board to put the pieces together.
The flashbacks and clues were all we had to work with. However, it seems like a left-turn twist made it unnecessary.
Don't get me wrong, I love a surprising twist!
Agatha Christie has hooked me plenty of times with the big reveals. In those stories, I've looked back at the clues and see where the story led to the truth.

When Ghosts introduced the mystery of Alberta’s murder, it was a fun whodunnit that the show could weave in and out of episodes, dropping clues along the way. Beloved by moviegoers for decades, the mafia film genre typically centers around key players that make up the world of organized crime in various contexts, locations, and cultures, with a sprinkle of family life and a generous serving of violence included in the storylines. The genre traces back to the early beginnings of film, but was popularized by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese in the 1970s and beyond.
Over the years, the mafia genre has continued to defy stereotypes and include elements from different film genres, like suspense or comedy. The latest mafia-related film, "Mafia Mamma," which hit theaters on April 14, presents a traditional look at the Italian mafia, with a refreshing, comedic tone delivered by Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. In the film, Colette's character, Kristin, unexpectedly inherits her estranged grandfather's mafia empire in Calabria, Italy, and has to assume the role of mob boss...

It’s no exaggeration to say that filmmaking legend Brian De Palma has had an eclectic and often spectacular career, spanning over fifty years that have brought audiences many unforgettable and classic movies. 1976’s Carrie remains an often referenced (we’re looking at you Wednesday!) horror masterpiece, crime drama Scarface is all time gangster gold, while his first entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise is still perhaps one of the strongest instalments for a then young and even more sprightly Tom Cruise. However, it’s De Palma’s 1987 The Untouchables, an adaptation of the 1950’s TV serial that focuses on the attempts to bring down crime lord Al Capone, that really shows his versatility as a director. The award winning film features several iconic scenes that are now etched in the minds of movie fans around the globe; from the Union Station shoot-out with full-on baby-in-great-peril slow-mo action shot, to...

Trump arch-nemesis Jimmy Kimmel said he found out about Trump’s indictment less than two hours before walking onstage, but the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host had no problem filling most of his monologue with Trump jokes, including “The ‘J’ in ‘Donald J. Kimmel also had some suggested titles for new reality series Trump might sell, given his circumstances. Among them: The Celebrity Apprehentice, Arrested Developer and, of course, the all-purpose Biggest Loser.
Kimmel had earlier tweeted a video of himself walking out to rapturous applause and, taking a page out of Trump’s book, hugging a flag. “A day many of us thought would never come!

TV loves itself some mobsters. There’s no getting around it. From Tony Soprano to Nucky Thompson to Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano, we’re enchanted by the bad guys and what they bring to the table. Shows like “The Sopranos,” “Peaky Blinders” and “Boardwalk Empire” – as well as “The Untouchables” in the early 1960s – have captivated us and generated plenty of awards attention in the bargain.

Maintaining the location library of 20,000 photos is one of Illinois Film Office assistant deputy director Louis Ferrara’s favorite parts of his job. “Producers always laugh when I say that, but it’s true,” he says.
The massive quantity of location photos are categorized into various curated files so when productions have a need, the film office can readily supply whatever they desire.
“We scout locations on a regular basis to freshen up the library,” says Ferrara, noting that they also send letters to homeowners and businesses to help with continually growing the resource. There’s no time wasted when productions choose to film in Illinois, and no need to retread the same locations.

Genericization is what happens when a trademarked brand name becomes so ubiquitous that folks start using the name as an umbrella term for all similar products within its niche. From “Aspirin” to “Ziploc” bags, this process is usually only achieved once a company has completely cornered a market, with some brand names often outlasting the companies that created them.
In the world of videogames, we see this a lot in terms of defining new genres. While the industry tends to eventually settle on a brand-neutral standard, many critics initially resort to comparing games to the most popular example of their genre, coining terms like “Souls-like” and “Doom-clone” to describe gameplay. And long before “Survival Horror” had been popularized as a genre descriptor, most gamers referred to resource-management-oriented horror titles as “Resident Evil Clones.”

With his 1959 comedy "Some Like It Hot," director Billy Wilder crafted a Prohibition-era fantasia, telling a wild, exaggerated story of dangerous gangsters on the tail of witless witnesses. Those two male musicians (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in one of the great cinematic double acts) end up masquerading as women to evade being found out by the mob, and in the process fall in love with a fellow musician, a singer who sparks the interest of both men.
It's that wacky screwball cross-dressing comedy that makes "Some Like It Hot'' the classic that it is, but the movie's first act actually draws from a tragic and violent historical event. While the musical comedy comprises most of the meat of the movie (as well as what most viewers remember), the Prohibition-era backdrop of speakeasies and dirty dealings was very important for Wilder.

He’s out. For the want of a Plexiglass lid screwed onto that courtroom box, Tommy Lee Royce is free and cycling around Leeds dressed like an extra from Tron. That’s bad enough, but heaping insult onto injury is how chuffed he is with himself. The haircut. The escape. The bike. Ryan being there to witness it all. Right now, everything is coming up roses for Royce, and that cannot stand.
It won’t stand, but with two episodes to go before Catherine (surely. Surely) tramples him underfoot, we’d all better make sure that our anti-anxiety prescription/fridge drawer of Mars Bars is filled for next Sunday. What’s coming will require a nerve-steadier.

Harrison Ford didn't exactly need a hit in 1989 when he signed on for "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," but his agent was probably overjoyed that he was returning to the blockbuster franchise that broadened his appeal beyond "Star Wars." Though the character of Indiana Jones was not tailor made for Ford (Tom Selleck had been offered the role first), he'd imbued the whip-cracking archaeologist with the same roguish, seat-of-his-pants charm that made Han Solo such a dashing delight. Moviegoers lined up to see Ford as Han and Indy, but they were less enthusiastic about his dramatic turns. He'd scored a surprise hit as a Philadelphia cop hiding out in Amish country in Peter Weir's "Witness," but found...
