It might be one year premature for its 30th anniversary, but David Fincher’s Seven is having a moment. Following the release of the 8K transfer of the 1995 film, Fincher has left himself no choice but to dig back into the archives – and that includes the test screenings, described by the director as “disastrous.”
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, David Fincher said that Seven tested in the 50s with audiences, a deadly sin in its own right within the movie industry. A headline in last Tuesday’s Hollywood Reporter stated: “Phyllis Carlyle, Influential Talent Manager and Producer, Dies at 80.” For those who worked with Phyllis, this description is somewhat simplistic.
There are many successful female managers today. In the late 1980s and early ’90s, there were very few.
From 1990 to 1993, I was Phyllis’ assistant. That she died this September of leukemia, but the news came out two and a half months later, reminded me of the famous Beatles lyric, “Eleanor Rigby, died in a church and was buried along with her name. Nobody came.”
Phyllis was the first person in the business who believed in me. I had just graduated from AFI. I didn’t want to be a manager, but I did want to learn how to navigate the industry. Mastering how to handle the non-stop agenda of her workday was sturdy preparation...

Is it a modern classic? I think so. Lawrence Kasdan’s best movie embraces characters often lampooned or dismissed, or stereotyped as kooks — introverts, extroverts, people trying to make personal connections and those trying to avoid them. William Hurt finds his best role and Geena Davis won an Oscar for hers; thirty years later the entire cast feel like beloved friends.
