When the 77th Tony Awards nominations are announced this morning, those honored with recognition will have been selected by a small group of theatre professionals who commit to seeing each and every eligible production that opened during the 2023-2024 season. They are thus able to make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn the spotlight of New York theatre’s top honor.
This past season, 60 theatre professionals saw all 36 eligible musicals, play, and revivals and will select the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, see a complete list of the 2023-2024 Tony Awards nominating committee members, including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins. Some of these nominators may have to recuse themselves prior to voting if they have a conflict, such as if a production that they worked is eligible for a nomination this year.

Dispatches From The Picket Line: Actors In NYC Say Offer From A-Listers Was “Righteous And Generous”
This is day 99 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Actors in New York City nearing day 100 on strike said a polite no thank you Friday to an offer from top stars to fund their health care by lifting the cap on SAG-AFTRA dues — to the tune of more than $150 million over three years — and to rework residual payments to benefit rank-and-file union members.
“It seems like not a good idea,” actor Kathleen Chalfant told Deadline during Friday’s rainy picket outside Netflix offices near Manhattan’s Union Square, in response to a proposal Thursday by A-listers to let their dues rise and, relatedly, to reverse the normal order of residual payouts so that actors at the bottom of the call sheet are paid first.
Union leaders have praised George Clooney and others for “their creativity and earnest desire to help solve the impasse.” But in a letter to members they also said...

This is Day 92 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
At the first actors to picket after Wednesday night’s breakdown of their talks with the studios and streamers, SAG-AFTRA members in New York City said that they were disappointed by the setback but “holding strong” to their demands.
Striking actors who gathered Thursday outside Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery offices also cheered the announcement of bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Senate to protect them from artificial intelligence.
Writers joining them on the picket line after ratifying their own contract this week urged the actors to stay strong.
“It’s tactics,” The Wire creator David Simon told Deadline, speaking of the studios’ decision to suspend the talks and criticize SAG-AFTRA for demanding a share of studio profits. “They say you can’t have something and you’ll never get something, and ‘DGA settled for this and you don’t understand our industry.

This is Day 83 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The language was salty but the mood was upbeat at a union rally in Midtown Manhattan by striking actors and their supporters from the 150,000-member Transportation Workers Union.
With talks between the actors union and the production studios paused until Wednesday, the crowd at SAG-AFTRA’s solidarity picket with the Twu filled two lanes of the street outside NBCUniversal headquarters and made a sometimes Nsfw din that could be heard for blocks.
Oscar-winning actor F. Murray Abraham, one of the rally speakers, dropped an F-bomb in remarks calling for all working Americans to receive a livable wage and health care. “And since our corrupt Congress won’t give that to us, we got a f*ckin’ union,” he said to cheers.
But it was Twu chief John Samuelson who really let fly, railing at “p*ick bosses” in a pugilistic speech that...

The Tony Awards has added new members to its nominating committee, including Ain’t No Mo star and playwright Jordan E. Cooper and Kpop composer Helen Park, who have both been outspoken about the need for change within the industry.
Other new members joining for the 2023-2024 Broadway season include The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen songwriter Benj Pasek, actor Bob Balaban, actor and playwright Adam Chanler-Berat, interdisciplinary artist Ty Defoe and director Miranda Haymon.
The Tony Awards nominating committee is typically younger and more diverse than the larger Tony Awards voting body. However, the addition of Cooper and Park is particularly notable, as both had shows this past season that posted early closing notices and have spoken out about the need for Broadway to improve how it markets to and welcomes diverse audiences (Kpop is about competing Korean pop bands, while Ain’t No Mo’ follows a series...

"Hereditary" might well be one of the most unsettling films of the last decade, but it's not always an easy one to follow. At first glance, it's a highly-strung family melodrama with a dark secret hiding beneath the surface.
And director Ari Aster goes to great lengths to keep that secret just out of sight.
"Hereditary" is the story of the Graham family, which is struggling with loss after the death of its unseen matriarch, Ellen Tapper Leigh (Kathleen Chalfant). There's very clearly something wrong here as the creeping tension engulfs the family, whether it's seen through eerie miniatures made by Annie (Toni Collette) or the outright weirdness of the family's...

It's undeniable — "Hereditary" is one of the most unsettling films of the last decade. A highly strung family melodrama that hides elements of the supernatural, "Hereditary" goes to great lengths when keeping its hideous secrets just out of sight. And that's only the beginning.
"Hereditary" tells the story of the Graham family, whose matriarch, Ellen Taper Leigh (Kathleen Chalfant), has passed away. Immediately beginning with Ellen's funeral, the entire film takes an off-kilter turn as the family begins to unravel. An unresolved tension runs deep through the Graham family. Young Charlie (Milly Shapiro) was her grandmother's favorite and is now clearly struggling after her...

A day at the beach turns into the nightmare of a lifetime in Old, a supernatural thriller that marks something of a return to form for twist-meister M. Night Shyamalan. That’s not to say it’s entirely perfect, but the film’s overall experience more than compensates for its minor flaws.
The central concept couldn’t be simpler. A group of guests at a ritzy resort are directed to a stunningly located beach by their eager-to-please hotel manager (Gustaf Hammarsten). However, once they arrive on the beach (Shyamalan cameos as the bus driver), they find that they cannot leave, as any attempt to do so results in unconsciousness.

When it comes to the modern Masters of Horror, I think it’s safe to say that M. Night Shyamalan is easily one of the most debated purveyors of genre fare. To this writer, what that indicates is that Shyamalan isn’t a storyteller looking to make movies that easily fit into widely accepted narrative structures adopted by so many others, which is why I think he can be a challenging filmmaker for some viewers to really get into. Personally, I’ll take a director that takes risks and continually challenges themselves any day of the week over a director that plays it safe and sticks to a tried-and-true formula. That being said, Old is certainly going to be another divisive film from Shyamalan that may alienate some and frustrate others, due to the film’s frenetic pacing and storytelling structure as well as how the performances are staged here.

There is hardly anything scarier to Hollywood, or even to American culture generally, than growing old, and something that makes aging happen much more rapidly would be terrifying. So M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller Old, where a group of people find themselves on a beach that compresses years of aging into hours, hits a cultural nerve, and has inherent potential for social commentary. Whether this director will use that potential, or even acknowledge it, is a big question going in to seeing this film.

The gulf between M. Night Shyamalan’s good films and his bad ones is now so broad that it seems impossible to believe that they’re made by the same writer-director, were they not so aggressively similar in so many other ways than quality. To say that “Old” is better than “Glass” is not much of a compliment, but it’s also woefully inferior to “Unbreakable” and “Signs,” much less “The Sixth Sense,” whose success and twist-ending structure he will likely never live down.
Adapted from “Sandcastle,” a 2010 graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, Shyamalan’s latest indeed features a whole lot of mystery, misdirection, and a last-minute surprise that upends everything the audience thinks they know. But the filmmaker’s diminishing capacity for recognizing naturalistic human behavior once again presents a problem when the time comes for audiences to relate to, much less care about, characters...

When we say the premise of M. Night Shyamalan’s new film “Old” gets old fast, we mean it literally, as a family trip to a remote beach becomes a nightmare.
“Old” stars Gael García Bernal and Vicky Krieps as two parents who bring their kids on vacation, only to watch as their children age rapidly to become teenagers in the blink of an eye. In fact, every person stuck on this little patch of sand is getting wrinkles and slowing down, and one even suddenly sprouts a pregnant belly.
It’s Shyamalan’s return to a twisty, mind-boggling thriller after scoring some recent hits with “Split” and “Glass,” as well as his Apple TV+ series “Servant.” The film opens in the heat of summer, hitting theaters on July 23.
Starring alongside Bernal and Krieps are Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff, Embeth Davidtz, Eliza Scanlen,...

"What's happening to us...?" Universal has debuted the first full official trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's movie Old, filmed last year during the pandemic. We featured the first look TV spot during the Super Bowl a few months ago, and thankfully this trailer doesn't reveal too much. Adapted from the graphic novel titled "Sandcastle" by Pierre Oscar Lévy & Frederik Peeters. The film takes place entirely on a secluded tropical beach. A family on a tropical holiday discover that the beach where they are relaxing is somehow making everyone turn older and older by the minute. The full ensemble cast (everyone at different ages!) includes Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Kathleen Chalfant, Alexa Swinton, Nolan River, Kylie Begley, Embeth Davidtz, Eliza Scanlen, Alex Wolff, Emun Elliott, and Thomasin McKenzie. Karen Robinson (Schitt’s Creek), Joe Regalbuto (Murphy Brown), Kathleen Chalfant (The Affair), Maxwell Whittington-Cooper (Human Capital) and Abubakr Ali (Power Book II: Ghost) are set as series regulars opposite Caitlin Kinnunen and Bella Ortiz in the CW’s untitled drama pilot executive produced by Jennie Snyder Urman.
Written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir and directed by Tessa Blake, the Untitled Urman/Rothrock/Weir Project centers on two millennial nuns – a devout true believer (Kinnunen), and a new arrival (Ortiz) who has yet to take her final vows – who start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spiritual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic church.
Robinson will play Sister Mary Annette Shiloh (“Smash”), the loving, defacto head-nun-in-charge, slyly trying to slingshot the Church into the 21st Century by mentoring the next generation.

Karen Robinson, Joe Regalbuto, Kathleen Chalfant, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper and Abubakr Ali have been confirmed as cast members of The CW’s untitled millennial nun dramedy pilot, directed by Tessa Blake and written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir.
Described by Blake as a “subversive comedy,” the untitled pilot stars Caitlin Kinnunen (“The Prom”) and Bella Ortiz (“American Carnage”). Per the logline, it centers on two nuns: Sister Maggie (Kinnunen) and Sister Frances (Ortiz), one a true believer and the other a new arrival who hasn’t taken her final vows. Sister Maggie is described as “the daredevil on your shoulder,” a radical nun hell-bent on shaking up the structures of the Catholic Church, while Sister Frances is described as the “complacent angel on your shoulder,” an impressional and people-pleasing nun who never breaks the rules— that is, until she meets Sister Maggie. As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cruised to their first Super Bowl victory since 2002 Sunday night, the commercial breaks — as they often do — provided a bit of bonus entertainment.
As always, an array of trailers aired during the big game, and while the ongoing pandemic means there’s still a cloud of doubt hanging over blockbuster season 2021 (at least in the non-streaming service world), Hollywood still had plenty to tease, from Eddie Murphy’s Coming 2 America to the latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. Daniel Baker still remembers the field trip he took in third grade to the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
Baker, better known as Desus Nice and as the co-host with The Kid Mero (aka Joel Martinez) of Showtime’s “Desus and Mero,” told the crowd at the museum’s annual fundraiser on Monday night that the trip stands out in his mind because his mother came along as a parent chaperone, and because at the time he thought of museums as something that were found in other boroughs, not the Bronx.
“It was a great field trip” that helped open his eyes to the world of art, Baker recalled as he and Martinez were feted with the museum’s Visionaries award, presented at the gala held at Capitale in the Bowery.
Martinez was effusive about getting a hometown salute.

Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez, the pair better known as Desus and Mero, are set to receive a hometown salute on March 2 when they will be honored along with others by the Bronx Museum.
The hosts of the Showtime late-nighter “Desus and Mero” will be included as part of the museum’s Visionary Duos gala recognizing those from the New York City borough who have made great strides in social justice, education and art.
Baker and Martinez have brought their Bronx-bred perspectives on everything from pop culture to politics to the Showtime series, which returns for its second season on Feb. 3. The pair also host the “Bodega Boys” podcast, which was a springboard for Baker and Martinez to host a TV talk show, first on Viceland and, as of February 2019, on Showtime. “Desus and Mero” airs twice-weekly in an hourlong format, with the hosts riffing and bantering about the week...

Spoilers Ahead: Showtime’s The Affair finished its five season run tonight, with the series’ co-creator and guiding creative voice Sarah Treem making her directorial debut on the finale. Treem took 90 minutes to stitch back together the fractured Solloway clan, as the philandering Noah (Dominic West) and long suffering wife Helen (Maura Tierney) find a way back to each other. This was something that seemed nearly impossible after his affair with the desperately unhappy Alison (Ruth Wilson), who found her way into the arms of the bored wannabe bestselling author Noah. He left his own wife and their four children and a highly unexpected adventure began, one that traced the multi-generational ripples created by such a tumultuous event.

Spoiler Alert: This article and interview with Sarah Treem contains details about tonight’s episode of The Affair.
Back for its fifth and final season, Showtime’s The Affair returns with some real surprises. The show was modeled on the varying viewpoints of four main characters: Noah and Helen Solloway, and Alison and Cole Lockhart. Noah (Dominic West) and Helen (Maura Tierney) are the only ones left standing. Ruth Wilson checked out last season, as her troubled Alison — whose affair with Noah launched the drama — was either murdered or committed suicide, with both versions shown during a shocking episode last season. Now, her husband Cole, last seen driving away from Montauk with daughter Joanie asking questions about her dead mother he couldn’t answer, is also gone. Joshua Jackson, a key part of this wonderful quartet of actors who brought startling emotional pain you don’t usually see outside of...

The Affair is finally drawing to a close.
The Affair Season 5 will chronicle the aftermath of last season’s horrific events and find the characters coming to terms with the consequences of their choices.
They'll make the realization that if they really want to change their futures, they must first face the past.
Helen (Maura Tierney) begins the season involved in an intoxicating new affair with a charismatic movie star (guest star Claes Bang), who offers to give her everything she’s been missing.
Noah (Dominic West) meanwhile has to swallow his pride and his jealousy and step in to take care of his family in her absence.
The Affair Season 5 Premiere Date Revealed - Who's Not Returning?
That's right, as we imagined all along, it appears Noah deeply regrets leaving Helen and their life behind.
He scratched an itch with Alison that tore apart his family and set him on a new trajectory.

For a show set in one of the world’s most iconic cities, “High Maintenance” has managed to brew up a trademark visual image of its own: The Guy (Ben Sinclair), purveyor of weed to the most wide-ranging of New York clientele, riding his bike down a busy street.
“High Maintenance” Season 3 is switching things up a bit, putting the show’s main dealer inside a moving vehicle for once. Judging by the looks of HBO’s trailer for the upcoming episodes, that also includes some pretty revelatory experiences at a car wash and some rainbow-tinged offerings for some of New York’s most stressed out residents.
Series creators Katja Blichfeld and Sinclair return to the series as executive producers, and the show’s traditional assemblage of one-off guest stars returns with an impressive new collection. Amy Ryan will return to the show after appearing in the early Season 1 episode “Museebat.
