“I’m sorry, but weekend two is better than weekend one,” said Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn prior to closing out the band’s Friday night set at Coachella. He wasn’t kidding, as over the course of the hour-plus performance Gorillaz were joined by a star-studded ensemble that included the likes of Bad Bunny, Beck, De La Soul, Yassiin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), Del the Funky Homosapien, Little Simz, Thundercat, and more.
Bad Bunny joined Gorillaz for the first live performance of “Tormenta” from the band’s latest album, Cracker Island. Following their late-night performance on Kimmel, Beck teamed up with Gorillaz on “The Valley of the Pagans.” Other collaborators included Yasiin Bey (“Sweepstakes”), Little Simz (“Garage Palace”), Del the Funky Homosapien, and De La Soul (“Feel Good Inc.”).

Eminem’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction is a complicated honor given the institution’s history of overlooking hip-hop’s most influential and pioneering Black artists, but Saturday night’s induction ceremony was a celebration of his contributions to the genre nonetheless.
The rapper himself acknowledged that fact in his induction speech, quipping that there were probably a few reasons why he wasn’t supposed to be there Saturday night. “I know that I’m a rapper, and this is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and there...

In 2013 director Guillermo del Toro brought us Pacific Rim, a fantastic film featuring fighting giant robots and giant monsters called kaiju. With this film he was setting up a universe that one day could grow into future sequels and even a television animated series. It also made over 400 million dollars, no doubt that it was only a matter of time before they got to work on a sequel. But why would Del Toro not direct the second film?
It turns out that the production timeline was the enemy. In an interview for Collider focusing on his hew Netflix series Trollhunters, Del Toro talked about what ultimately lead to him stepping away from the directors chair for the Pacific Rim sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising. Here is a quote from the interview:

She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.—Flannery O’Connor The mist uncovers Japanese soldiers as well as the grim sight of severed heads by the side of the hot springs where Catholic priests are being tortured. A priest kneels down in horror, almost catatonic, unable to bring himself to believe in the evilness of these men, the men of the Inquisitor. Why are these priests, who came to this “swamp of Japan” to spread the Word of the Lord, suffering so immensely on the hands of these soldiers? To the modern, secular audience, the theme of Silence (2016) is of great irony: the all-powerful Catholic Church, the institution that spread terror across Europe for 700 years with her bonfires and witch hunts and enforcing an almost maddening outlook at faith and personal behavior, comes to an unconquerable land where...

Mark and Aaron tackle Guillermo Del Toro’s debut film, recently re-released as part of the Trilogía boxset. Cronos is technically in the vampire genre, but even for his first film, has a distinctive Del Toro feel. We get into the character of Jesus Gris, and how Del Toro uses him as a tragic figure that touches on themes of mortality and religion. We also explore Del Toro’s passion and his “Bleak House,” showing that his passion for the medium informs his work.
About the film:
Guillermo del Toro made an auspicious and audacious feature debut with Cronos, a highly unorthodox tale about the seductiveness of the idea of immortality. Kindly antiques dealer Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi) happens upon an ancient golden device in the shape of a scarab, and soon finds himself the possessor and victim of its sinister, addictive powers, as well as the target of a...

Music plays a big role in “Morris From America,” the story of a 13-year-old African-American boy who moves to Heidelberg, Germany. While unable to make friends at his new school, Morris has a ’90s rap-loving dad (Craig Robinson) who tries to be his friend. Ultimately, Morris takes his frustration out in the music he writes.
To create the film’s music, director Chad Hartigan turned to Wild Cub frontman Keegan DeWitt, who mixed original retro-sounding hip hop with a selection of Edm.

Guillermo Del Toro is one of those filmmakers who’s always busy. He’s seldom got less than 17 projects on the go at once (that’s an estimate) and his unique vision means that we’re regularly permitted entry into his world. A place where the normal parts of life seem extraordinary, either in their darkness, or in their light. He’s in short, brilliant. If like me, you’re a fan of his style then you’ll be pleased as punch with what today brings – our first look at his upcoming series Trollhunters.

Although e-sports have long been a part of video game culture since the early 70’s, competitions saw a large surge in popularity in 1989 when Universal Pictures produced The Wizard, a movie about a trio of kids who make their way to a national Nintendo video game championship for a grand prize of $50,000. The Wizard didn’t go down as a timeless, cinematic classic, but it did develop an understandable cult following as the years went on, and this week we’ll tell you why. But first, we discuss the brand new footage of the long-awaited Mario Maker as well as the future of the franchise.

Did you ever watch an episode of, say, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and there's a young kid in the family and the designer asks "What do you like?" and kid's like "I like baseball and blah blah blah," and then all of a sudden when the reveal happens, the kid's room is Entirely covered in baseball wallpaper and decals and baseballs and paraphernalia and you think, man, they are just gonna outgrow that if you shove it down their throats. We were like that kid -- "I liked the Blue album and 'Pinkerton!'" -- when it comes to Weezer and it was iterated enough that Weezer heard. The Blue album came out in 1994, "Pinkerton" in 1996. The band -- after a number of hit singles, a number of maligned albums, some bonkers pop experiments and funny, fun live shows -- heard the cry "I like those albums" and reissued "Pinkerton...

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1993...
What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.
Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.
But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.

The totally rap-friendly Gordon-Levitt even appears in the album’s teaser trailer, below. Group member Del The Funky Homosapien detailed the album’s concept ...

Last Halloween we premiered the track "The Corpse Grinders" the third installment in Monsters of Drumstep, an annual Ep series from electro-house sensation Figure, and that one went on to place on our Best Horror Albums of 2012 list. We eventually caught up to Figure creator Josh Gard after he completed the European leg of his world tour to talk about his fascination for monsters and all things horror & sci-fi, and how he integrates those loves into his roof-raising brand of electronic dance music. So Josh, how did the European leg of your tour go? It was great over there! It's my third time overseas, but this time was the best run by far. I had some awesome food and had three days in London to run around... didn't find Jack the Ripper, though. [laughs] It looks like you were packing the house at those gigs. Yeah! I was very pleased the...

Twelve years after the cult classic record Deltron 3030 was released, Del The Funky Homosapien and Dan The Automator are teaming up for a sequel. Despite its title, Deltron 3030: Event II picks up a decade later, taking place in the year 3040 in, as Del told Rolling Stone, “a more desperate and dystopian society.” “Bigger and more grandiose” than its predecessor, Event II also features samples and scratching from Kid Koala and vocals from actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who became friends with Dan The Automator while filming Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Dan The Automator told Rolling Stone that ...

Philadelphia — The city where America was made is gearing up for rapper Jay-z's "Made In America" music festival, which officials estimate will attract 100,000 fans to Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend.
Construction of stages and tents began this week at the somewhat unusual venue, a tree-lined boulevard in the heart of downtown. It's the first show on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to require paid admission. Rock stalwarts Pearl Jam are co-headliners of the two-day event.
Officials said there should be no problem handling the crowd considering the city's long tradition of staging much larger concerts at the same location.
"Every year, we have detailed plans for public safety, street access, trash removal and we successfully accommodate 400,000 to 500,000 visitors on the 4th of July," Mayor Michael Nutter said in a statement.
For those who can't make the festival on either Sept. 1 or 2, don't worry – filmmaker Ron Howard will be directing a movie about the show.

Although Dan “The Automator” Nakamura had already set a pretty remarkable artistic precedent as the producer of rapper Kool Keith’s idiosyncratic solo debut Dr. Octagonecologyst, his collaboration with acclaimed Bay Area artist Del the Funky Homosapien, Deltron 3030, has since become a minor masterpiece of independent hip-hop. But after more than a decade of work with groups like Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Peeping Tom and Kasabian, Nakamura is reuniting with Del (whose real name is Teren Delvon Jones) and returning to the well that catapulted him among the ranks of rap’s most celebrated producers: A new Deltron album

No doubt: it's been a very good year for both these stars. And much as I admire Jean Dujardin's sublime performance in The Artist, my hunch is that the industry will favor one of its own on Oscar night. So who will it be -- George or Brad? I'm saving my prediction for a later Oscar piece, but for now simply want to consider these actors' respective contributions, leading up to and including 2011. And you'll note I say "actors," because one thing this past year confirmed was that both these handsome, movie-idol type personalities can, in fact, really act. Some will claim they've always known it, but for me this was a pretty striking discovery. Too often Pitt and Clooney have been constrained by their leading man status to playing cool, heroic protagonists who save the day and get the girl. And they appear to be playing themselves. (Sometimes even on the same screen,...

The pairing of West Coast hip-hop godfather Del The Funky Homosapien and taste-making East Coast label Definitive Jux incited fevered anticipation for Del’s 2008 comeback album Eleventh Hour, his first new release since 2000’s Both Sides Of The Brain. As is so often the case with contemporary hip-hop, fevered anticipation predictably led to glum disappointment when the disc turned out to be a minimalist snoozer that left fans nostalgic for the G-funk beats and goofy good humor of Del’s early albums. Del die-hards should be careful what they wish for. As its title suggests, Golden Era is ...

Deadline is reporting that Benicio Del Toro (The Wolfman) has signed on to play daring undercover FBI agent Jack Garcia in a movie called "Making Jack Falcone," to be directed by Steven Soderbergh (Che, Ocean's Eleven, Traffic). Before he retired, Garcia took down 39 members of New York's Gambino Crime family. The Cuban-born agent was so convincing while pretending to be Italian that he was invited to become a made man before the feds were forced to shut down the case. Garcia is a big man, standing 6'4 feet tall and weighing north of 390 lbs. Chances are that Del Toro will have to put on a good amount of weight to play the part, but this is nothing new for Soderbergh who had Matt Damon recently gain weight for "The Informant." Garcia had previously appeared on "60 Minutes" to talk about his preparation to go undercover and what finally forced the feds to get him out.

Welcome to the weekly Newsroom Poll, where we will give you a sneak peek into the lives and minds of some of the correspondents, writers, editors and producers here at MTVNews.com. Every week, they'll answer a poll question that will reveal some of what we talk about behind the scenes here in the newsroom. Enjoy!
This week, details surfaced about one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the fall. No, not Jay-z's The Blueprint 3 or Lil Wayne's Rebirth. We're talking about the soundtrack to "New Moon," which will likely feature contributions from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Muse, Kings of Leon and Death Cab for Cutie. There was also the announcement of the soundtrack to "Jennifer's Body," the new Diablo Cody-penned horror film. With that, combined with the quarter-century anniversary of one of the finest film soundtracks ever constructed (that being Prince's Purple Rain), this week's question is:...
