“The Rapist,” which has its premiere next month at the Busan International Film Festival is the hardest hitting film that Indian filmmaker Aparna Sen has ever made.
A chronicler of different aspects of Indian life, Sen has previously won global acclaim for her eclectic body of work, which includes “36 Chowringhee Lane” (1981), “Paroma” (1985) and “Iti Mrinalini” (2010) as a director.
Sen is also one of India’s most feted actors who has worked with the stalwarts of the country’s cinema including Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Rituparno Ghosh and internationally with Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
Sen had the idea for “The Rapist” some 15 years ago, and decided to revisit the subject after the recent spate of rape incidents in India. “I began to wonder about why men rape. No one is born a rapist. They go through infancy, through the toddler stage and through boyhood in all innocence,” Sen tells Variety.

The repealing of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was definitely a moment of monumental significance in contemporary Indian history. Even though the provision was a legislative relic of the British colonial government, the government of the United Kingdom had revoked this provision in their own country, much before India did the same. The struggle for equal rights and opportunities for people belonging to the LGBTQ+ spectrum in India is far from over; however, the past decade has seen some interesting trends in terms of representation of queer characters in Indian cinema.
For a society that still refuses to condone sex education because the subject continues to be taboo, the cinematic medium becomes an interesting means of initiating conversations on the matter, given its reach and capacity for mass engagement. It’s been over two decades since the release of Deepa Mehta’s “Fire”, which had created...

Actor Jisshu Sengupta, who is balancing a film career in multiple languages and is geared up for his sci-fi web series "Skyfire", says slowly but surely Bengali cinema is reaching out to the national audience as the theatrical release of regional films has expanded.
Bengali cinema has had an impact at international film festivals with the work of iconic filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and Ritwik Ghatak among others, apart from movies by filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh, Aparna Sen, and Goutam Ghose or Kaushik Ganguly and Srijit Mukerji. The only cure to old age is death. The only remedy to loneliness during old age is memories, at least for some. Others who prefer to live in the here-and-now may choose to seek reluctant company. There are stories of how veteran actress Nadira would bribe her guests to stay a little longer with drinks.
Violet Stoneham, the character that Jennifer Kapoor played in Aparna Sen's "36 Chowringhee Lane" allowed a young couple to use her apartment for sex, just so that she would be in company. Creaky bed notwithstanding.
There is a couple making noisy love in "Yours Truly", though their sounds of passion sound fairly phoney, as though they were faking it just to make the ageing protagonist feel lonelier.
In Yours Truly, Soni Razdan playing an autumnal Bengali woman Mithi Kumar in Kolkata, is a direct descendent of Violet Stoneham, though far less intimidated by her solitude.

Rituparno Ghosh was, before his untimely death in 2013, one of India’s most interesting, talented and, at times, controversial directors. A talented writer who brought out the best in the actors who worked with him, Ghosh spent ten years working at the Response ad agency before finally turning to cinema.
Director Sangeeta Dutta (who considered Ghosh a friend) brings together interviews conducted with people who knew Ghosh and who established friendships and working relationships with him. The film is a veritable who’s who of Indian (and most particularly Bengali) cinema, with commentary and stories about Ghosh from Aparna Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma, Sharmila Tagore, Nandita Das, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Arjun Rampal and Soumitra Chatterjee, amongst others. The documentary uses two devices to frame the story: the first, excerpts from Ghosh’s posthumously published book First Person (a compilation of weekly columns written for the Bengali weekly magazine Robbar) read by...

Rituparno Ghosh (1961-2013) emerged on the Bengali film world in early nineties after the death of Satyajit Ray. He worked for an advertisement agency before making two documentaries for Doordarshan ( India’s National Television) and moved into filmmaking with the movie “Hirer Angti” (Diamond Ring) (1992). But despite getting critical applause, the movie was never released commercially. But Rituparno’s next movie “Unishe April” ( 19th April) won National Award for best film and changed the face of Bengali cinema with a touch of freshness and aesthetic story-telling approach.
Tagore has been a big influence for Rituparno Ghosh and its reflected on his style of film making which brings in the aura of poetry many times. The trailer of “Shivaay” opens to Ajay Devgn’s trademark piercing gaze, lingering there for a moment before lurching into three minutes of continuous movement as he hurtles, untethered, through Himalayan avalanches and between cartwheeling vehicles. His distinctive baritone cuts through the visuals as he narrates “shlokas” (verses) from Vedic Hindu scriptures describing the transformative capabilities of the deity Shiva, the destroyer of evil and the inspiration for the film’s lead character.
Despite some of these reference points, “’Shivaay’ is not a religious or mythological movie,” Devgn told press during a recent trip to New York, the first of four cities in a U.S-wide promotional tour for the October 28 release, which marks his second as a director. “However, it is firmly based in the idea of faith, and the main character draws heavily from Lord Shiva, both in terms of his spirituality and his superpowers.”

Srijit Mukherjee's Bangla epic Rajkahini which swept the box office and all the critical acclaim last year, is going to Punjab. And Vidya Balan is taking it there. Mukherjee who wrote and directed Rajkahini is now all set to remake the film in Hindi for producers Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt. The film would be made with an entirely new cast, with Vidya Balan replacing Rituparno Ghosh in the central part of brothel's Madame. All the other 11 sex workers would also be played by actresses who do not feature in the Bangla version. And there is a very good reason for this. Explains Srijit Mukherjee, "We are re-locating the plot of Rajkahini, titled Begum Jaan in Hindi, to the Punjab border. Rajkahini was located at the Bengal border where the after-effects of Partition where felt much less strongly than in Punjab. We're taking the story to a new level, and...

Ajay Devgn, who has been a part of Indian film industry for over two decades, was felicitated on October 19 for his valuable contribution to Indian cinema at the opening day of Confederation of Indian Industry (Cii)’s Big Picture Summit.
The two-time National Award-winning film actor is today among Bollywood’s most bankable box office stars. It isn’t his crowd-pulling prowess alone that defines him. His approach to his star status sets him apart from the crowd.
Primarily, his fans get to see Devgn only on the big screen. As his public appearances are rare, the seasoned actor lets his films do the talking for him. Like a true-blue professional, he has steadily evolved with age even if it might be fair to say that not every huge box-office grosser that he spearheads today does justice to the actor in him.

Intro: Beginning this week, we bring you another weekly column that dwells on the intricacies of Bollywood and the people who make it. Sometimes funny, sometimes informative, always downright forthright!
Hashmi's Adhuri filming!
This is epic. Not jumping on to Balan's lips must have been a frustrating time for Emraan Hashmi in Hak. It's his haq, you see, of smooching every heroine he is paired up with. In a few films he has also flaunted this 'license' he has been supposedly given by over-enthusiastic directors and ever-willing heroines with some cheesy lines. Every time in Hak, he has gotten dangerously close to Vidya Balan's lips, and then like a good boy, gone for a traditional hug.
Surely, he must be feeling that this was adhuri shooting.
Balan is big when it comes to lip-locks
Speaking of Vidya Balan, she is not averse to kissing, or is in anyway a bad kisser.

Actor Jisshu Sengupta has worked in some of the most prestigious films- Bose: The Forgotten Hero, The Last Lear, Barfi! and Mardani, to name a few. And we are not even talking about his Bengali films like Chokher Bali, Naukadoobi etc.
Jisshu will next be seen in Shoojit Sircar's Piku, once again featuring Amitabh Bachchan (like in The Last Lear), along with Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone. Giving reason for being so selective, Jisshu says, "Yeah you are right. I have been lucky to work with quality directors like Shyam Benegal, (late) Rituporno Ghosh, Shoojit Sircar, Aparna Sen etc. Actually I believe in quality work and as I have been getting good projects regularly I did not venture much elsewhere. Its television time once again for Anurag Basu. The director of path-breaking films like Gangster and Barfi is all set to return to his roots. Anurag had started his career on television directing several episodes of Tara in 1993. He also directed a large number of episodes of Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Tthi before branching out into filmmaking. But now Anurag has gone back to television with a brand new adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's Chokher Bali. Designed for television, the film has turned out so well that it's now being considered for the large screen Says the film's leading lady, Radhika Apte, "It's been made for the Epic channel. When Anurag Basu offered me the role I just wanted to do it. I didn't care which medium it was for. Anurag is a director for whom I'd do two shots in a short-film. And what a mind blowing script.

Although Kangna Ranaut has rightfully walked away with the National award as Best Actress for her performance as the Delhi girl on a solo honeymoon after being deserted by her fiance on the eve of their wedding, the rest of the Queen team was in for a disappointment, especially director Vikas Bahl who lost the best director award to the Bengali auteur director Srijit Mukherjee who won the best director award for Chatuskhon. Srijit admits he was "pleasantly surprised" by the win considering Queen was such a popular film. "It is a rare honour and I am totally overwhelmed," says Srijit. It may be mentioned here that last year, Queen was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy when it was alleged that the film's theme was suspiciously similar to Parvati Balagopalan's unsung film Phir Zindagi. Srijit's Bangla film Chatushkon stars Aparna Sen, Goutam Ghose, Chiranjeet Chakraborty and Parambrata Chatterjee as four...

Sushmita Sen who turns a year older on November 19 has secured herself a very unusual birthday gift. There is good news for Ms Sen's fans. She has managed to convince the director Srijit Mukherjee of her first Bengali film Nirbak to let her speak in the film in her own voice. Though she doesn't speak Bengali at home with her daughters, Sushmita Sen loves her mother tongue and is practicing towards thinking in Bangla. Says the director, "I was surprised by how fluently Sushmita spoke Bangla. She speaks better Bangla than Raima Sen although the latter spends a majority of her time working in Kolkata. So yes, Sushmita will speak her own lines. I firmly believe when you dub an actor's voice you reduce the performance by 50 percent. Rituda (the late Rituparno Ghosh) and I used to have long discussions on this." There is a tradition of actresses from Mumbai...

The passing of Rituparno Ghosh in 2013 left Indian cinema bereft of one of its finest craftsmen.
The Kolkata-born writer, director, activist and literary figure – just 49 years of age at the time of his untimely death – was widely recognized as the spiritual successor to the legendary Satyajit Ray.
Now the life and work of this creative genius is set to be celebrated at the 16th annual Tongues on Fire London Asian Film Festival (Laff) to be held in June across the British capital: a city which held particular affection for Ghosh.
The Festival – Europe’s oldest and most respected showcase for independent South Asian cinema – will hold screenings of three of Ghosh’s most critically acclaimed films and a series of discussions on the filmmaker’s immeasurable contribution to Indian cinema.
The tributes will begin with a screening of ‘Chitrangada’, Ghosh’s seminal 2012 drama based on the story of the character...

Onir's new Hindi film Shab will introduce Bangla superstar Prosenjit's wife Arpita Pal as the female lead. The film will not only transform Arpita's traditional Bengali beauty's image into a hip South Delhi socialite, it will also cast her as a woman in love with a younger one. Apparently Prosenjit was scandalized when he heard the role offered to his wife by Onir. Arpita who is considered one of the finest contemporary actresses in Bengal voluntarily gave up her career to be Mrs. Prosenjit and to look after their daughter, emerging from her self-imposed exile to do the occasional film, like the late Rituparno Ghosh's last released film Satyawanshi. Onir says it took all his persuasive powers to get her on board for this project. "I had actually gone to meet Prosenjit. He had expressed a keenness to work with me. When I went to meet him Prosenjit's wife walked in.

Mumbai, Jan 23: Raima Sen, who bears a strong resemblance to her late grandmother and legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, says initially filmmakers tried to portray her like her granny and it took her a long time to get out of her shadows.
"Initially, when I came into the industry, everyone would look at me in that funny way as if they were not seeing me, but someone else. When I was doing my first film 'Godmother', I'd be told to look into the camera in a certain way. It took me a while to realise they were seeing my grandmother in me," said Raima.
She feels that late filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh's "Chokher Bali".
