Deadline reports that director Ridley Scott is in talks to direct an as-of-now untitled Bee Gees biopic for Paramount. A couple of years ago, Kenneth Branagh was reported to be directing this Bee Gees movie, and way back in 2010, there were rumors that Steven Spielberg might direct it.
According to the report, Scott has long wanted to make a movie with or about the Bee Gees, ever since the band's longtime manager Robert Stigwood worked with Scott on developing a movie with the band's members back in the 1970s. Though the movie fell apart, Scott has a chance now, nearly 50 years later, to tell the story of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The other big reason Scott is being attached to the project is that Paramount executives reportedly loved early footage of Scott's upcoming "Gladiator 2" and wanted to sign the prolific director for his next feature as quickly as possible.

The box office success of Bob Marley: One Love following this week's Valentine's Day release is prompting Paramount to get its long-gestating Bee Gees biopic moving a little more quickly than before. According to Deadline, the studio has now put the script in front of Ridley Scott, and the director is making a deal to tackle it as his next film.
While it's hard to imagine Scott needing anyone's approval for a job, the studio executives were apparently over the moon with the footage from his Gladiator sequel and eager to have him sign on. And for his part, Scott already has a Bee Gees connection, having once been developing a film called Castle Accident with the band's manager to star musical siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb that never came to fruition. But, assuming the biopic deal works out, now he'll get the chance to tell their story.

Deadline reports that Ridley Scott is in negotiations to direct a movie about the Bee Gees, the iconic musical group formed by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb.
Ridley Scott recently wrapped production on the Gladiator sequel, and in true Ridley Scott fashion, he’s already looking for another project. I wish I had half his energy. Should Scott close the deal to helm the Bee Gees movie for Paramount Pictures, he would also produce through his Scott Free banner along with Michael Pruss. John Logan (Alien: Covenant) has penned the script for the project.

London, June 29 (Ians) Disco legends, the Bee Gees would argue constantly in recording studios, but always made up over a cup of tea, a new book reveals.
According to the book ‘Bee Gees: Children of the World’, the ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ singers, Barry Gibb, 76, and his twin brothers Robin and Maurice, knew it was “time to get back to work” once the kettle had boiled, reports Mirror.co.uk.
Studio engineer John Merchant tells how the brothers were “world champions of sniping at each other” until they had made a cuppa.
The book’s author, pop historian Bob Stanley, wrote: “John reckoned the spats were part of the work process, ‘They knew what the other was capable of, and would not rest until their brother had delivered. ‘They would challenge each other consistently. And, like an unrealistic sitcom, everyone knew the situation would be resolved as soon as...

The legendary Scottish singer Lulu has had a career that’s spanned six decades and is still, as she says, “smashing it onstage.” But she is most associated with a song and a film that she made when she was a teenager: the 1967 Sidney Poitier-starring classic “To Sir, With Love.” The film depicted Poitier as a British Guyanese teacher at a tough East London school and the ensuing racial issues, and featured Lulu not just as a student in his class but also singing the title song to him in a pivotal scene at the end.
Though just 18 at the time, Lulu (real name: Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie) was already a major pop star in Swinging London-era Britain, with a powerhouse voice that got her discovered at the age of 15. She was steered to top chart success by Marion Massey, one of the first female managers in the business...

In helping to construct the narrative for the recent Bee Gees documentary on HBO, editors Derek Boonstra and Robert Martinez had a huge hurdle to overcome with both Maurice Gibb and Robin Gibb having passed away. “There’s a previously made Bee Gees documentary called, ‘In Our Own Time.’ We really leaned on those interviews pretty, pretty heavily,” Martinez tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video above). This proved to be very useful in answering several questions they had as the filmmaking process went on. “We have different questions we want answered than maybe when they were alive, so some of the stuff that they hadn’t used, those interviews were just new ground for us to cover.”

When Mark Monroe, the writer of the recent Bee Gees documentary, first started hearing the band when “Saturday Night Fever” came out, he resorted to questionable methods to try and hear some of their earlier music. “I remember I had an older brother who had some Bee Gees albums and I remember trying to pilfer them in the night and listen to them,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video above). But in helping to put this documentary together, Monroe found a lot of areas about the band that he wasn’t as familiar with. “I was not so familiar with the story of their many careers. They have several highs and they kind of transform themselves a couple of times and I was not as familiar with that.”

The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart relied on a huge amount of archival footage, including performances of Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb that span decades. “They run the gamut from film transfers to camcorder stuff,” says supervising sound editor Jonathan Greber. “Most of it pretty bad fidelity, some of it really bad, with noise layers on top of it.”
The goal was to not only restore the archival material but also keep the sound authentic. “What I tried to do is keep it sounding like it really sounds,” he says. “...

In HBO’s The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, director Frank Marshall follows Barry Gibb — the sole surviving member of the Bee Gees, the immensely popular trio that included his brothers Robin and Maurice Gibb — as he reflects on his family history and their ascent into pop stardom. While most might think of the Bee Gees solely as the band behind the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack — emblematic of disco’s most frivolous elements ...
Even Val Kilmer doesn’t consider the movie he produced about his life to be a documentary.

Among the things that caught Frank Marshall off guard when he started making a documentary about The Bee Gees was the incredible sense of humor that the brothers had not only with each other, but almost all the time. “You don’t see that in the band on the stage, but when they’re off stage and they’re back there cracking jokes, they’re playing games on each other,” Marshall tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above). Marshall traces this to the incredibly strong bond that the brothers developed from performing together at such a young age. “They had this dream when they were nine, ten years old, that they wanted to be a band and they had the perseverance and the drive that they had and their parents supported them.”

Frank Marshall, director of HBO Max’s new documentary “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,’ believes one way for Barry Gibb to mend his own broken heart was getting the chance to tell the inside story of the other two Bee Gees, his late younger twin brothers, Robin and Maurice Gibb. “You know he obviously misses his brothers immensely, he’s the oldest,” Marshall told TheWrap, adding that the surviving Gibb brother’s participation seemed to be cathartic for the British singer. “He also wants to celebrate the legacy. I think he wants people to know the story. A lot of people think they just did ‘Saturday Night Fever.’ “ Producer Nigel Sinclair agreed, saying the brothers should not be thought of as disco artists only because of the whopping success of the “Saturday Night Fever,” which remains the second largest soundtrack album of all time with...

As the last surviving member of the iconic pop group The Bee Gees, Barry Gibb explained during the new HBO documentary “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” which charts the history of the hit factory behind “Stayin’ Alive,” that he thinks often about his deceased brothers — and still hasn’t fully accepted that they’re gone.
Gibb founded The Bee Gees with his brothers Robin and Maurice in 1958, and they remained the core of the group through their early success in the 1960s through their disco-infused superstardom in the 1970s and beyond. Their youngest brother, Andy, was too young to join the band but he became a musical star and teen idol in his own right in the late 70s and early 80s. Generations of music fans know the Bee Gees — British-born, Australia-based brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb — as the musical act that created the songs for Saturday Night Fever, the 1978 movie that made John Travolta a star and catapulted what was known at the time as “disco” music to the forefront of pop culture.
But not only did the Bee Gees create indelible dance staples like “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “More Than a Woman,” but they had an entire career before Saturday Night Fever, one which was launched in the 1960s and yielded pop classics like “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart,” “To Love Somebody,” “Massachusetts,” “I Started a Joke,” and more, before their gradual turn toward R&b and dance with hits such as “Jive Talkin’” and “Nights on Broadway.”

“Bohemian Rhapsody” screenwriter Anthony McCarten is in talks to write the script for the music biopic film based on the life and career of the Bee Gees, two individuals with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The film about the disco and pop group is in the works at Paramount Pictures, which purchased the life rights to the Gibb family estate on behalf of Gk Films’ Graham King. Paramount will distribute and co-finance along with Amblin Partners and Sister, the new company from Stacey Snider, Elisabeth Murdoch and “Chernobyl” producer Jane Featherstone.
McCarten is a three-time Oscar nominee who has been on a roll with biopics. Exclusive: Anthony McCarten is in talks to write the script for the Bee Gees movie that Paramount Pictures is making with producer-financier Sister, Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King’s Gk Films, and Amblin Partners. The Oscar-nominated McCarten most recently scripted the upcoming Netflix film The Two Popes, the Fernando Meirelles-directed drama that stars Anthony Hopkins as Catholic Church Pope Benedict and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis. That film will be released November 27.
McCarten has the distinction of having written three recent biopics that resulted in Best Actor trophies for the stars of those films. Eddie Redmayne won for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, Gary Oldman won for Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour and most recently Rami Malek won for Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, which was produced by King. A biopic about legendary pop siblings The Bee Gees is being spearheaded by Paramount Pictures.
The Bee Gees are set for an outbreak of their signature brand of night fever at theaters, with the story of the iconic Aussie sibling pop act set to join the recent genre surge of music biopics in the aftermath of Rami Malek's acclaimed performance as Queen's Freddie Mercury in the hit movie, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Indeed, a yet-to-be-titled biopic project centered on the 220 million-record-selling trio, The Bee Gees, will be brought about by a producer trifecta spearheaded by Paramount Pictures, reports Deadline. Paramount acquired the rights to dramatize the story from the Gibb family estate, chronicling the travails of siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb from their beginnings as a rock act, career nadirs and, ultimately, their reinvention as disco kings, culminating with their culturally-ubiquitous smash hits from the soundtrack of 1977 film Saturday Night Fever.

I hate apologizing on behalf of American Idol. We should be enjoying this! This is our joy! My joy! My Seacrest-sponsored rapture. My karaoke vomitorium pandemonium extravaganza. But sigh. Every once in awhile Idol is a silly suckfest for losers, and tonight was one of those nights. Ten dudes entered, and I'm telling you that at least eight of them were lame enough to dismiss completely. Randy Jackson shrugs wildly and pouts, "What is going on here?!" Besides you and your patronizing chuckles, Randy, not much.
Before we begin, it's time to note that Nicki Minaj's "infuriated" reactions whenever Mariah Carey speaks are annoying. What is she reacting to? Anything? It makes me mad. And then, of course Mariah makes me mad with her simplistic, pandering critiques and nervous, non-committal energy. Ugh! Hop on your jetski and hit me with some of that "Honey" video swag, M.C.!

What an awful week it’s been for music. Donna Summer passed away just a couple of days ago. And now cancer has also claimed the life of another extremely talented musician of the disco era. Robin Gibb of the awesome, three-member group, the Bee Gees, died yesterday, at 62, after succumbing to a long battle with colon and liver cancer.
We knew he was very sick but really thought that he may have been on the mend after waking up from a coma he fell into for a couple of days in April, while suffering pneumonia. His family feared he wouldn’t recover, but he did for a time.

The disco-music world lost another soldier just days after its queen, Donna Summer, passed away. On Sunday, Bee Gees member Robin Gibb died after a long battle with colon and liver cancer.
The musical group composed of Gibb and his brothers Barry and Maurice reinvented disco in the late 1970s and became a mainstream success. But it was the inclusion of their music in the John Travolta film "Saturday Night Fever" that really put their stamp on pop culture.
The band of brothers composed and performed a majority of the songs on the soundtrack, and up until Whitney Houston's musical collection for "The Bodyguard," it was the best-selling soundtrack of all time. Producer Robert Stigwood had approached the Bee Gees after the film...

Robin Gibb, who died today at 62 after a long battle with cancer, had a unique voice so filled with trembling, pure beauty that it had the ability to pierce your heart and break it in half. As a third of the Bee Gees, and twin to Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb and his other brother Barry, shared lead vocals in the group that started in their native Australia in the late ‘50s, but it is Robin’s voice that dominated those early singles that so clearly set the brothers on their path to superstardom. Maurice Gibb, Robin's twin and bandmate, passed away in 2003. "I think Robin, obviously, took Maurice's death very badly," a manager for the performer told London's Guardian in 2005.
