Doug Bradley returns to familiar territory in Thorns, a Hellraiser-inspired movie that melds themes of religion and science with practical special effects. The horror icon was intrigued by the script and his mysterious character, Archbishop Jenkins.
“The script catches you or the script doesn’t catch you, and there was a lot about this that did straight away. It’s an interesting story; the interface here between science and religion, between exploration of outer space and inner space. It’s an apocalypse movie, basically,” Bradley explains to Bloody Disgusting.
“But at the same time, [director] Doug Schulze always says that he sees the movie as a kind of a retro homage to movies of the ’80s and to makeup effects movies.”
In his own words, Bradley describes the plot: “There is a satellite out in space that has gone rogue and is transmitting peculiar signals back to Earth, which is having strange effects on people.

Lzzy Hale made a cameo during Gwar’s set at the Palladium Times Square in New York City on October 13th for a performance of their collaborative track “The Cutter.”
The Halestorm frontwoman reprised her role as her Scumdog alter-ego Clitaurus Maximus from Gwar’s 2022 album The New Dark Ages, on which she sang a duet with Blöthar the Berserker on “The Cutter.”
For the NYC rendition of the tune, Hale came out in the appropriate garb, donning battle armor and wielding a giant sword. From there, she stole the show as Clitaurus Maximus, singing centerstage while hoisting her blade, power-metal style.
Gwar took to social media to sing her praises following the show.
“We are not easily impressed,” the band wrote on Facebook, “but the mighty Lzzy Hale aka Clitaurus Maximus making an appearance for ‘The Cutter’ at our show in NYC was almost as satisfying as making your...

What do you do when you’re on break from opening for Metallica’s world tour? In the case of Ice Nine Kills, you gather a couple thousand of your biggest fans for an unforgettable rock show.
For the second consecutive year, the Massachusetts-based band headlined a concert as part of Silver Scream Con, a horror convention curated by Ice Nine Kills mastermind Spencer Charnas. After last year’s intimate performance effortlessly sold out the 850-seat Cabot Theater in Beverly, Ma, this year’s event was booked at the Lynn Memorial Auditorium in Lynn, Ma. Despite having more than double the capacity at 2,112, it sold out in advance.
Following an introduction by SiriusXM metal ambassador Jose Mangin and the dulcet tones of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “Red Right Hand” from Scream, Ice Nine Kills – frontman Charnas, guitarist Ricky Armellino, bassist Joe Occhiuti, drummer Patrick Galante, and fill-in guitarist...

Gwar know their own legend. When the self-professed Scumdogs of the Universe dipped through NPR for a Tiny Desk Concert recently, frontman Blöthar the Berserker admitted, “Let’s face it, Gwar’s a little bit lowbrow … sub-brow maybe.” But nevertheless, they performed a four-song, 20-minute set of their special brand of intergalactic dreck for the highbrow, nonprofit news network.
Although they abstained from their usual antics — celebrity murders, spraying everyone with fake semen — the costumed headbangers still brought along beloved maestro Willhelm Fartwrangler to conduct “Sex Cow in G-flat Minor,...

Gwar are revisiting their 2013 album Battle Maximus with a new 10th anniversary expanded reissue. A remixed and remastered version of the track “Falling” can be heard now ahead of the reissue’s September 1st release date.
Battle Maximus stands as the final Gwar album to feature late band mastermind Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, and the 10th anniversary edition features his final vocal performance on the previously unreleased bonus track “Tammy, the Swine King.”
“Ten years after its initial release, the wounds are just as fresh,” commented guitarist BälSäc, the Jaws ‘o Death. “The words that Oderus wrote as a tribute to his fallen Scumdog brother, Flattus Maximus, gain new meaning when heard as the final lyrics he would ever sing. "Empire Records" is a movie that not a ton of people saw, but many of us who came up in the late '90s/early aughts remember the 1995 film quite fondly. The movie was directed by Allan Moyle (who will always be my hero for giving us "Pump Up the Volume") from a screenplay by Carol Heikkinen. It centers on a day -- Rex Manning Day! -- in the life of a ragtag group of record store employees as they try to stop their shop, Empire Records, from becoming just another Music Town.
I worked at an independent music store in the early 2000s, one that was doomed to eventually be sold to a large chain. I have clear memories of all of us saying, "Damn the man. Save the Empire!" on more than one occasion. Sadly, there was no saving CD World and we were all soon out of...

In the nineties, director Allan Moyle accomplished the rare feat of making two movies that wound up being considered cult classics. At the start of the decade, "Pump Up the Volume" starring Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis used pirate radio and a killer soundtrack to take down a corrupt high school. In 1995, "Empire Records" took down big business by saving the local record store with a last-minute fundraiser put on by a motley crew of Gen X outcasts. 20 years after "Empire Records" was released to little fanfare, it has become something of a social phenomenon with legions of fans who celebrate Rex Manning day every year on April 8 (the film is set on the same day).
Richard Linklater's "Slacker" and Moyle's "Pump Up the Volume" captured the malaise of the slacker generation on film, an era that culminated with Stephen Frears' "High Fidelity" starring John Cusack in 2000. Nestled perfectly...

Gwar is a unique, beautiful, grotesque beast. The metal band was founded nearly 40 years ago in Richmond, Virginia, and while there have been a rotating lineup of artists throughout the band's wild history, Michael Bishop has been a part of it all since their debut album, "Hell-o." Originally, the bassist played Beefcake the Mighty in the band of barbaric space warriors. Nowadays, Bishop plays Blothar, the lead vocalist of the band.
The group's story is told in director Scott Barber's new movie, "This is Gwar," a metal tale full of highs and lows. The documentary is mostly a blast, though, celebrating the band's artistry and staying true to their creative roots throughout everything. There are countless stories we could've asked Bishop about during a recent interview, but mostly, we talked to him about his live experiences, including an unforgettable experience at Taco Land in San Antonio, Texas.

In-depth rock doc about the unmistakable legends of heavy metal and their outrageous antics will be best appreciated by their fans
One of the few acts who can legitimately thank Beavis and Butt-Head for making them famous (as opposed to merely cult), Gwar was, and still is, an American heavy metal act with punk roots who got started in the 1980s in Richmond, Virginia. They’re best known for performing in elaborate monster/alien costumes (mostly big headpieces and bare midriffs) and deploying lashings of fake bodily fluids and prosthetics in their act, such as a notorious massive codpiece called the Cuttlefish of Cthulhu that sprays “sperm” at the audience – and got them banned in North Carolina at one point.
That episode is one of many recounted in this in-depth oral history rock doc, a sturdily made work whose appeal will very much depend on viewers’ interest in the band in the first place.

Creator Adam Green and co-star Joe Lynch sat down with Dread Central recently for a massive interview all about "Holliston."
Show creator and star Adam Green talked about his love for the "Holliston" series. "It's my favorite thing I've ever done," Green said. "It's my best work to date, and I think a lot of the people involved in the show would say the same thing. If you like Season 1, I think Season 2 really blows it away. I think with any sitcom the second season is usually considered to be funnier and better than the first, mainly because you know the characters, you know the world, you know the tone. And...

Oh Rexy, you're so sexy!April 8 is a Very important day, at least for '90s kids who couldn't get enough of the cult classic "Empire Records." So, what's with today, today? Well, April 8 was dubbed "Rex Manning Day" by superfans of the flick, getting its name from the aging pop star who visits the title store in the film.Featuring early performances from Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger, Robin Tunney and our eternal crushes Ethan Embry and Johnny Whitworth, the movie chronicled the hook ups and screw ups of a ragtag group of record store employees. With a ridiculous Gwar cameo, a killer soundtrack, some hilarious music videos and a pre-"Jerry Maguire" Renee rocking out to "Sugar High," "Empire Records" is easily one of our favorite movies ever.To celebrate, check out 5 Fun Facts about the flick below -- and click the gallery above to see what all the stars look like today!

I don’t have the world’s greatest relationship with Holliston. I remember reading about it, prior to the airing of season one, and being excited. Then I remember the disappointment I experienced when finally having the ability to watch it, seeing as Fearnet has a pretty limited reach, as far as availability goes. All of the elements were there, but it just didn’t click with me. One of the main problems I had, was that for the type of show that it was, it was way too long. Shows that feature the sitcom format should never go on for any longer than thirty minutes. By the forty minute mark, the novelty has worn off, and some viewers are beyond ready for the episode to end. That’s not to say that there wasn’t some entertaining moments, it’s just that whatever momentum it created, was ruined by the excessively long running time.

In addition to being Oderus Urungus, the frontman for the groundbreaking metal band Gwar for over three decades, Dave Brockie (as Oderus) starred in Adam Green's sitcom "Holliston." Green had some words about his co-star and friend he wanted to share.
If you are a fan of Brockie's work in Gwar or "Holliston" or his outrageous interviews, do yourself a favor and read Adam Green's blog entry on his friend Dave Brockie. It's a truly heartfelt and touching tribute.
Green wrote this entry because, as he put it, "I want to tell as many people as possible who the great man behind that costume really was."

By now I'm sure you've heard the devastating news concerning the passing of Dave Brockie – best known to horror and music fans as Oderus Urungus, founder and famously outrageous vocalist for the legendary metal monsters known as Gwar, and regular on the Fearnet original series Holliston. While this tragedy undoubtedly marks the end of the band's three-decade history, their manager has come forward to announce that this year's fifth annual Gwar-B-q – the band's notoriously crazed summer festival – will go on as scheduled, but will feature a tribute to Brockie's memory, scheduled for Friday, August 15th (the day before the show itself). Details of that ceremony have not been disclosed as of this writing. “On behalf of Dave Brockie's family, Slave Pit Inc. and Gwar, we would like to thank all the loyal fans worldwide for the outpouring of love and support shown to us over the past few days,...

All of us at Fearnet were deeply saddened when we learned of Dave Brockie's passing yesterday. The founder of horror band Gwar, Brockie was probably best known by his alter ego, Oderus Urungus. Oderus was an integral part of Fearnet's original series, Holliston.
In honor of Dave / Oderus, Fearnet will be airing a 24-hour Holliston marathon, beginning at 6am on Wednesday March 26th. You can find Fearnet on your cable network here.

The world lost an amazing person today. Some truly shocking and tragic news is coming out of Virginia as Gwar frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) has passed on at the all too early age of just 50 years old.
According to MSN, officers were called to Brockie's home Sunday evening (March 23rd) and found the singer dead inside, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said Monday. Detectives don't suspect foul play at this time, and the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death, Waugh said.
The band, founded in 1984, is best known for its members' high-profile costumes and stage theatrics, but beneath it all they had a strong message and were anything but shy in terms of getting it out there and shouting it from the hilltops. Brockie was also a staple of the Adam Green and Joe Lynch show for FEARnet, "Holliston," in which Brockie as Oderus played Adam's friend and confidante.

Richmond, Va. (AP) — Dave Brockie, who as "Oderus Urungus" fronted the alien-costumed heavy metal band Gwar during graphic and fake-blood-soaked stage shows for more than three decades, has died. He was 50. Officers were called to Brockie's home Sunday evening and found the singer dead inside the home, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said Monday. Detectives don't suspect foul play at this time and the medical examiner's office will determine cause of death, Waugh said. The band founded in 1984 is known for its comically grotesque costumes, stage antics and vulgar lyrics. Gwar was nominated for a Grammy Award for best long-form music video in 1993 for "Phallus in Wonderland" but lost to "Diva" by Annie Lennox. It also was nominated for best metal performance for "S.F.W." in 1996 but lost to "Happiness In Slavery" by Nine Inch Nails. Randy Blythe, the lead vocalist for Virginia-based metal band Lamb of God, fondly recalled...

The mighty Scumdogs of Gwar are hungry again, and you know what that means... it's time for another round of meat, metal and mayhem better known as the annual Gwar-B-q, now celebrating its fifth year. The band has just confirmed that the festivities will begin at 10 am Saturday, August 16, once again at Hadad's Lake Water Park in Richmond, Virginia. The event will feature two stages this year, and the lineup will be announced soon at the official Gwar-B-q website. “This truly auspicious event is going to far surpass all other Gwar-B-Qs in terms of bodies consumed on our never-ending altars of gluttony,” declared Gwar's typically tactful front-beast and Holliston co-star Oderus Urungus. “Plus there will be more places to go to the bathroom than ever before.” Oderus and company made headlines just last month when they symbolically decapitated Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott during a recent show.

When it comes to music, there's no band that appeals to us horror fans more than Gwar, a rambunctious thrash metal band known for their whacky costumes and over the top on-stage antics. This past weekend, at Melbourne, Australia's annual Soundwave Festival, the band engaged in a particularly brutal and controversial stage show, which saw the faux decapitation of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
As reported by Tone Deaf, a man dressed as Abbott made his way on stage during the show, telling the members of the band to "go the hell back to Antarctica." In a shocking display, vocalist Oderus Urungus (who also stars in Fearnet's own Holliston!) responded by picking up a massive sword and slicing the Prime Minister's head clean off his shoulders, which resulted in fountains of blood shooting out into an audience of cheering fans.
Thankfully, someone captured the violent theatrical display on video, which you can check out below!

Eighteen years later, the boys from Empire Records reunited to celebrate Rex Manning Day (just kidding, we know it's on April 8th), posing for a photo that brings back fond memories of spilled diet pills, pot brown dreams of Gwar, and those little orange Music Town smocks. Joe and Lucas are sadly missing, but do you recognize a slightly aged A.J., Mark ("with a C"), Warren, Eddie, and Berko?...

In the late night world, sometimes one guest is all you really need to make your mark for the week. Such is that case with "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" this week, as even though some of the other shows have more consistent night-to-night collections of guests this week, Stewart is the only host who will welcome President Barack Obama to the set of his show. The Commander-In-Chief will sit down with Stewart on Wednesday (October 27) to discuss the upcoming "Rally to Restore Sanity," an event that will be going down this Saturday (October 30). It's Obama's first visit to "The Daily Show" since he was elected president, and it should be a lively discussion about the state of his term and the upcoming midterm elections.
