There’s not a car crash, police chase, celebrity DUI, convenience store smash and grab, baby bear in a swimming pool, or taco truck fire they won’t race to. Australia's Essential Media and Entertainment and Us/Canadian production company 11 Television have joined forces to launch Essential 11 Media Group.
11 Television, which has opened offices in Los Angeles and Toronto to focus exclusively on factual entertainment formats, has the rights to all of Essential's factual formats and programs in North America while Essential will continue to produce factual, drama and kids content under its existing banner, as well as market its own drama shows in the Us.
The startup business, comprised of Essential boss Chris Hilton and 11 Television's veteran executive producers Kevin Healey and Jesse Fawcett, will provide a new avenue for Essential in the North American market.
"It's very difficult to get original formats up in Australia with the commercial channels or pay-tv and so one way around that is to create them in North America and make them hits over there and then bring them back," Essential's Chris Hilton said.

Exclusive: Great news for flash mob fans. Fox has picked up Howie Mandel's reality special Mobbed to series with an eight-episode order. The order follows the solid ratings performance of the special last night. Airing behind American Idol, Mobbed, which featured an elaborate surprise marriage proposal involving a large group of singers and dancers, drew a 3.8/10 in adults 18-49 and 10.8 million viewers, scoring the largest audience and the highest 18-49 retention for a reality show airing after Idol in two years. Based on a format created by Mandel, Darryl Trell and Howard Kitrosser, Mobbed puts a hidden-camera spin on the "flash mob" phenomenon (large groups of people suddenly showing up in public places to perform a pre-rehearsed dance number). It features people throwing elaborate surprises for friends, family members, loved ones or co-workers. Mobbed is produced by Alevy Productions and Angel City Factory. Mandel, Trell, Kitrosser, Chris Cowan, Jean-Michel Michenaud,...
