Exclusive: Scout Comics has partnered with Oren Segal\’s Management Production Entertainment to develop Louis Southard’s comic book series, Midnight Western Theatre, for television—tapping Kevin Carroll to handle the adaptation.
The comics featuring art by David Hahn examine turbulence within the U.S.A. of the 1860s. In the series, the notorious Red Tom and his deadly posse have laid claim to the once prosperous town of Liberty Springs. But will these outlaws be able to savor their sinful victory when two black-clad, supernatural strangers suddenly arrive? Scout Comics will produce the adaptation alongside Carroll and Segal, with the project marking the latter’s first TV outing.
“I was instantly drawn to the world of Midnight Western Theatre, with its razor-sharp wit and ingenious premise,” said Carroll. “It blends the grittiness of a classic Spaghetti Western with the pulse-pounding elements of Gothic Horror. It’s a big, expansive world,...

The gap between a good high school horror flick and a mediocre one is about a mile long, but the difference between a mediocre high school horror flick and a slightly less mediocre genre effort is almost completely indistinguishable. After a while, all these non-descript, hormone-ridden teens start to blend together into the same plaid-shirt-wearing stereotypes, whether they’re partaking in illegal activities or being hacked to bits by the next slasher hopeful.
Unfortunately, The Curse Of Downers Grove is yet another mediocre high school nightmare that’s no different than the last ten similarly scoped thrillers about evil town curses, despite being penned by American Pyscho author Bret Easton Ellis. The story is adapted from Michael Hornburg’s 90s novel Downers Grove, with indie filmmaker Derick Martini stepping behind the camera to take over directorial duties – though you’re probably just here because of Ellis’ name. Through numerous adaptations of his work, such as Less Than Zero, American Psycho, and The Rules of Attraction, novelist Bret Easton Ellis has become a familiar name to film fans over the years. In 2008, however, the novelist stepped into the film realm himself, co-adapting his book The Informers for the big screen. He followed it up with an original screenplay in 2013 for The Canyons, and his next foray into features will see him adapt another person’s novel.
Titled The Curse of Downers Grove, the screenplay is adapted from the Michael Hornburg novel Downers Grove. Ellis co-wrote the screenplay with Derick Martini, and the latter takes the directing reins for the feature, whose synopsis can be read below.

Easton Ellis is teasing Twitter with ideas on casting, directors and screenwriters (himself) for the adaptation of El James's erotic novels. Is he serious?
Maverick novelist Bret Easton Ellis has put himself forward to adapt erotic literary sensation Fifty Shades of Grey for the big screen with an enthusiastic Twitter splurge.
El James's tale of bondage and domination has become the fastest-selling book of the year, prompting a rush among publishers to develop their own take on the emerging "mommy porn" phenomenon. Studio Universal won the screen rights in March and plans a trilogy based on the novel and its two sequels. Angelina Jolie was at one point tipped to direct following the critical success of her debut film In the Land of Blood and Honey. Easton Ellis, however, has other ideas.

Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Nikki Reed (Twilight), and Rebecca De Mornay are set to star in a new film called Downers Grove. The film is an adaptation from the novel written by Michael Hornburg, and the screenplay was written by Bret Easton Ellis. Ellis is the author of such classic novels as American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction and Less Than Zero. Downers Grove is the first screenplay he's written not based on his own work.
The film is being directed by Nelson McCormick, whose worked on lackluster remake horror films such as Prom Night and The Stepfather. The story revolves around a cursed high school in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove. At the end of each school year, one senior dies in a bizarre death.
The film has a solid writer and a mediocre director. Unfortunately, it will most likely end up being another forgettable teen horror thriller. What do you all think?...

Hayden Panettiere (whose name of course means “Bread of the Earth”) has signed on for a role in the long-in-gestation Downers Grove that sees her playing a high schooler. There’s no surprise there, but instead of trying to break her own limbs to see if they grow back or psychologically torturing a nerd with her good looks, she’ll be doing something far more grisly. Fortunately, famed novelist Bret Easton Ellis (“Rules of Attraction,” “American Psycho”) is writing the screenplay from the Michael Hornburg novel about a young girl with a sex-crazed mother, a sex-crazed best friend, a heroine-addicted brother, violence, the prospect of someone always dying of unusual circumstances just before graduation, and all the destruction of the American family landscape that you might hope for. Hayden Panettiere is 21 and Nikki Reed is 22, but they just can't seem to get enough of high school. According to Variety, the actresses are set to star in the thriller "Downers Grove," based on the Michael Hornburg novel about a cursed high school in a Chicago suburb where each year one senior dies a bizarre death right before graduation.
