Lady Gaga knows a thing or two about making an entrance (see the meat dress and that whole egg thing), so it should come as no surprise that she's bringing her knack for theatrics to American Horror Story: Hotel. Gaga was spotted on set of the new season of the hit FX drama looking extraordinarily glamorous. That silver glove accessory? Something tells us there's a story there. Possessed demon hand? Who knows, it's Ahs and all bets are off! The singer's costar, Oscar winner Kathy Bates, previously teased viewers with just how fashionable Gaga's character was. "Was it Norma Desmond, Jean Harlow or Marilyn Monroe descending the staircase towards me in a shimmering silver gown? No, it was...

Above: three-sheet poster for The She-Devil (1918).Theda Bara, cinema’s first bona fide sex symbol, was born 130 years ago this week. Barely remembered today, she was once one of the great stars of the silent era (only Chaplin and Pickford were bigger). She made over 40 films, most of them, astonishingly, in the space of five years—between 1915 and 1919—but, thanks to a fire at Fox Studios in 1937, only a handful can be seen today. She never made a talkie, though she lived long into the sound era. But in her heyday she was a media sensation, a Kardashian avant la lettre.Born Theodosia Burr Goodman in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 29, 1885, Bara was a New York theater actress who wasn’t discovered by the movies until she was 30. The film that, quite literally, made her name—and that name was “The Vamp”—was A Fool There Was in 1915.Adapted from a...

Honorary Award: Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth among dozens of women bypassed by the Academy (photo: Honorary Award non-winner Gloria Swanson in 'Sunset Blvd.') (See previous post: "Honorary Oscars: Doris Day, Danielle Darrieux Snubbed.") Part three of this four-part article about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Honorary Award bypassing women basically consists of a long, long — and for the most part quite prestigious — list of deceased women who, some way or other, left their mark on the film world. Some of the names found below are still well known; others were huge in their day, but are now all but forgotten. Yet, just because most people (and the media) suffer from long-term — and even medium-term — memory loss, that doesn't mean these women were any less deserving of an Honorary Oscar. So, among the distinguished female film professionals in Hollywood and elsewhere who have passed away without...

75 years ago today Jean Harlow died. The Platinum Blonde superstar, arguably the ur blonde bombshell that Marilyn Monroe gets the bulk of the credit for being, was only 26 years old. She'd been a sensation since the age of 19 when Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels (1930) premiered. I loved the Scorsese-directed Hughes bio The Aviator (2004) when it premiered because of its handsome snapshot of Old Hollywood Glamour but I never quite understood what Gwen Stefani was doing playing Harlow. I couldn't see the resemblance beyond hair color and anyone can have that; Platinum Blonde does not normally occur through natural means!
When I was a baby cinephile and more familiar with Old Hollywood giants from their still photos than their actual work, Jean Harlow's huge fame and legendary sex appeal confused me. I thought she looked... odd and weirdly masculine (maybe it was the nose and chin? or maybe just my...

Yul Brynner, Deborah Kerr, The King and I Deborah Kerr Pt.1: What Lies Beneath True, you most likely won’t find Deborah Kerr labeled a sex goddess anywhere, but that’s merely because her sexual allure, apart from the beach scene in From Here to Eternity, was hardly obvious. Unlike overgrown little girls such as Marilyn Monroe, Clara Bow, Jean Harlow, Jayne Mansfield, or Brigitte Bardot, Kerr looked and acted like a mature woman even in her 20s. In other words, there was nothing kittenish about Deborah Kerr; she didn’t pout. Unlike Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich, Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau, Lizabeth Scott, or Susan Sarandon, Kerr’s seething sensuality had nothing to do with sultriness, come-hither looks, or bare body parts. Unlike Simone Simon, Jane Greer, the latter-day Barbara Stanwyck, and other (French or American) film noir dames, or Theda Bara and assorted film...

Exclusive: The Chateau Marmont, which for the past 80 years has served as the backdrop of major events in Hollywood history and the lives of its famous inhabitants, will now take front stage in a miniseries from The Office star John Krasinski and Aaron Sorkin. Oscar winner Sorkin will write the mini, now in early development, which will be based on the book Life At The Marmont by former Chateau Marmont co-owner Raymond R. Sarlot and Fred Basten. Krasinski, who has been the driving force behind the project, and Sorkin will executive produce with Chateau Marmont's current owner Andre Balazs and his daughter Alessandra. Krasinski is also expected to play a role in the as-yet-untitled miniseries, which will tell the interconnected stories of the people who frequented the famed Hollywood landmark over several generations. Since the 1930s, the building, originally built as an apartment complex in the late 1920s and then converted into a hotel,...

Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight Written by Online Film Critics Society members Phil Hall and Rory Leighton Aronsky, What If They Lived? (BearManor Media, 2011) takes a look at the lives and oeuvre of celebrities whose film careers were prematurely curtailed by death. As befitting their book's title, Hall and Aronsky then wonder, "What if they lived?" Encompassing the early days of cinema all the way to the early 21st century, What If They Lived? features an eclectic mix of film talent gone much too soon. Those include Rudolph Valentino, Jean Harlow, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge, Lon Chaney, Bruce Lee, John Belushi, River Phoenix, Mabel Normand, Carole Lombard, John Gilbert, Will Rogers, Robert Walker, Chris Farley, Natasha Richardson, and Heath Ledger, in addition to mostly forgotten luminaries such as early D. W. Griffith leading man Robert Harron, silent-era superstar Wallace Reid, Evelyn Preer, Carole Landis, Laird Cregar, Robert Francis,...

Lydia Hearst Shaw doesn’t want any trouble.
In what’s probably a very smart move, the would-be star of “Dogs in Pocketbooks,” the Hollywood satire whose troubled protagonist bears more than a passing resemblance to Lindsay Lohan, has pretty much denied all knowledge of the project, according to New York Magazine.
“As for any theatrical roles, I am currently filming ‘Two Jacks,’ directed by Bernard Rose,” the heiress recently tweeted. “My next project is ‘Catwalk’ by Tony Hickox. At this time I am not officially signed onto any other projects.”
She’s no fool, that Lydia Hearst Shaw. She knows that when Lindsay Lohan’s mom says that she’s gonna sue, she definitely means it.
But wait… don’t sue, Mom! “Dogs In Pocketbooks” isn’t about your daughter. No way.
“It’s more like it’s based on some of the headlines she’s generated,” said screenwriter Charles Casillo to Entertainment Weekly.

The writer/producer of upcoming film "Dogs in Pocketbooks" is backtracking over statements he made suggesting the movie is based on the colorful life of Lindsay Lohan - after the actress' mother threatened to take legal action.
Lydia Hearst and Joan Collins have signed up for roles in the gritty drama, about a troubled young star making her way in Hollywood. Screenwriter Charles Casillo riled Lohan's parents after admitting Hearst's part is "obviously based on Lindsay Lohan" earlier this week.
He told the New York Post, "(The movie) is in no way mean-spirited towards Lindsay. It's the kind of thing she has spoofed about herself in the past. It's more of a satire about the crazy people around her." But the writer/producer is rethinking his pitch after the "Mean Girls" star's mum Dina threatened legal action in a bid to scrap the movie.

The writer/producer of " Dogs in Pocketbooks " now insists his movie is Not about Lindsay Lohan ... maybe because the Lohan's are making rumblings of a lawsuit. Charles Casillo now tells TMZ ... reports that the movie -- about a starlet addicted to drugs and alcohol who goes in and out of rehab -- is based on Lindsay are "totally blown out of proportion." Interesting comment, given what Casillo told Page 6 a few days ago: "[The movie] is in no way mean-spirited towards Lindsay.

(Reps for Lohan have not returned EW’s request for comment.) “It’s more like it’s based on some of the headlines she’s generated. Not a biography. The movie is a...

It took less than a day for reps from the Lohan family to speak out against Charles Casillo's latest film, "Dogs in Pocketbooks." The screenplay was written as a satire of Lindsay Lohan's life, though Casillo was emphatic that the film was "in no way mean-spirited toward Lindsay," adding, "It's the kind of thing she has spoofed about herself in the past."
But the Lohan family has been notoriously sensitive about anything that makes a mockery of Lindsay, most recently seen when they sued E-Trade for $100 million because of an ad that was modeled after her and ran during the Super Bowl.

Last year, when New York magazine celebrated Richard Avedon's portrait of a pensive Marilyn Monroe by publishing reinterpretations of the famous photograph, they probably didn't think to ask Billy Pappas for a contribution. A waiter and busboy from Baltimore, Pappas devoted almost a decade to painstakingly recreating the Avedon snapshot as a hand-drawn sketch, a labor he called his attempt "to take a drawing where Lindbergh took the airplane."
Pappas was brought back to earth when he decided it was time to introduce his piece to the art world. After rounding up a motley band of supporters to find a way to showcase his work, he settled on trying to get an evaluation from David Hockney. One would think that with a title like "Waiting for Hockney," the feature debut of director Julie Checkoway would be about Pappas' pursuit of the famed artist, but that's only half the story.

A sex tape featuring nm0402718 autoMarilyn Monroe[/link] will not be made available to the public "out of respect" for the late actress, according to reports.
Memorabilia collector nm1708243 autoKeya Morgan[/link] alleges a New York businessman has purchased the 15 minutes of 16mm film footage, which shows the late actress performing oral sex on an unidentified man, for $1.5 million (GBP750,000).
The black and white footage is claimed to have been shot in the 1950s and was discovered in the 1960s - when Morgan alleges Fbi director J. nm2542001 autoEdgar Hoover[/link] tried to prove the man in the film was John F. Kennedy or Robert F. Kennedy.
The footage was confiscated by the Fbi, but not before the informant made a copy of it - the footage which has been sold.
He tells the New York Post's PageSix, "You see instantly that it's nm0402718 autoMarilyn Monroe[/link] - she has the famous mole. She's smiling, she's very charming, she's very radiant, but she's known for being radiant. She moves away, and then it (the footage) stops."
But the businessman who bought the footage insists the film will be kept private.
Morgan adds, "He (the buyer) said he's just going to lock it up. He said, 'I'm not going to make a nm0385296 autoParis Hilton[/link] out of her. I'm not going to sell it, out of respect.' "...
