Los Angeles, Feb 26: Writer F Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 classic novel The Great Gatsby is set to be made into an animated feature film.
The adaptation will be helmed by William Joyce, Oscar winner in 2012 in the Best Short Film (Animated) category for his film, The Fantastic Flying Books Of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Writer Brian Selznick is also associated with The Great Gatsby project. An official announcement on the cast is yet to be made.
Joyce said, "Gatsby continues to cast a powerful spell over readers unlike any other book in American letters. Much of the power of Gatsby comes from the enchantment of Fitzgerald's prose. He created a vivid dreamscape that, to some degree, has eluded filmmakers since the silent era."
He added, "The previous film versions were constrained by live action, but innovative animation could finally realize the elusive quality of the novel."

When I sit through a film such as Zootropolis, Rango, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Eddie The Eagle or Coraline, I can’t help but be thankful somebody has bothered. As a parent as well as a movie lover, I’ve grown to really dislike family movies that just turn up to act as a surrogate babysitter for 90 minutes, with no intention of becoming anybody’s favourite film. The films I'm going to talk about are the family movies therefore that I think both try and do something a bit more, yet continue to fly under many people's radar.
A bonus mention before we get going, and number 26 in the list, much to my surprise: Alvin & The Chipmunks 4. I was expecting next to zero from it, courtesy...

Rating: ★★★☆☆
Length: Approx. 7 hours (plus 80 minutes for the TV component)
Platform & Performance: Xbox One – Solid frame rate, no noticeable bugs, occasional texture pop-in.
If the name David Cage means something to you, and you like what games like Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls were going for – the whole ‘super neat idea trapped in a fumbled execution’ ideology – you’ll grow to admire and perhaps love Quantum Break.
A narrative-heavy third-person shooter, I say ‘admire’ first, because it’s a very hard game to love, despite Remedy creating what is easily one of the most ambitious and riveting projects in gaming history. Over the years, the developer has gone from pioneering ‘bullet time’ with Max Payne, to flexing their narrative muscles in Alan Wake. Both projects were love letters to noir filmmaking and supernatural horror respectively and, with Quantum Break, it’s a nod to action movies of the...

The first two pilots Amazon will release, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and The Numberlys, are aimed at preschool-aged children. Written and developed by Ken Scarborough (Arthur) and based on the book by the same name, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie follows the story of Mouse and Oliver as they start an adventure in one place and eventually end up back home after a flurry of twists and turns. The Numberlys is based on the titular book, app, and short film, and tells the story of five friends who manage to turn a sprout into a tree in their city. The Numberlys...

Long-gestating Xbox One exclusive, Quantum Break, finally has a release date. Mark April 5th in your calendar everyone – that’s when you’ll finally get the chance to pick up and play Quantum Break in all of its glory.
Glory is an appropriate word to use, too, as Remedy’s Xbox One debut looks absolutely stunning in terms of visuals, and they’re being backed up by an innovative new time-based combat system that lets the player freeze and manipulate time in several different ways.
In addition to all of that, Remedy have come out with a massive list of Hollywood clout that’ll be lending their talents to both the game and its counterpart live-action series, which will be fused together to form an experience that is “greater than the sum of its parts.”
You can check out the confirmed cast members below:

This year's Best Animated Short Film Oscar race is, as ever, full of fetching displays of boundary-pushing technique and bold artistic voices. I sought out and watched all 10 of this year's contenders, announced recently by the Academy, from Disney's widely-viewed latest to an offering from the legendary Bill Plympton to new work from Oscar winners like William Joyce and Torill Kove. Let's just say I'm glad it's not my responsibility to whittle this down to five. I imagine these categories — even with the growing popularity of the annual Magnolia Pictures/Shorts International theatrical shorts package — remain a game of pin the tail on the donkey for those of you who take your Oscar pools seriously. But that release always comes once the nominees have been sorted. Let's dive in earlier with a cross-section of the 10 finalists, shall we? There's lots of traditional animation in the mix here, which the branch...

Lots of films are dedicated to, or in memory of someone. But it's not always clear why. We've been finding out...
Back when Breaking Bad returned for its final batch of episodes in August 2013, it had a dedication at the end of it. The card read 'Dedicated to our friend Kevin Cordasco'. As it turned out, Kevin Cordasco was a 16-year old who had been battling cancer for seven years, who had met both Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan. Cordasco died before he could ever get to see the episode dedicated to him.
I found this such a moving story, that it got me wondering about the dedications that appear on films, and what the story behind them was. After all, the dedications are there for a reason. What I uncovered was some funny stories, mainly extremely sad ones, and some extremely moving dedications.

★★★☆☆ Featuring diminutive heroes wrapped up in a big adventure, Chris Wedge's Epic (2013) offers old-fashioned, if baggy, family fun. Based on the children's novel by William Joyce, Wedge blends elements of Bill Kroyer's eco-adventure Fern Gully (1992) with that of Joe Johnston's family classic Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989). An impressive voice cast that includes Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried and Beyoncé Knowles do provide some odd dialect shifts, but in a tale of miniature warriors and magic, the majority probably won't worry about a few Irish lilts being mixed up with the sugar-coated tones of middle-America.
Teenager Mary - or M.K. as she prefers to be called - finds herself living with her eccentric and estranged father, Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis), a scientist convinced that there is a race of tiny warriors living in the wood behind the house. Scoff as she might, M.K. soon finds herself...

When nightmare king Pitch (Jude Law) threatens to fill the world’s children with fear, it’s up to the mythical icons known as The Guardians - Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and the dream-spinning Sandman - to thwart his evil plans. But first they need to welcome a reluctant new recruit, the ultimate cool dude Jack Frost (Chris Pine). Adapting from William Joyce's book 'The Guardians of Childhood', the creators of How To Train Your Dragon take everyone on a breathless adventure through a variety of richly animated wonderlands - wintry and otherwise.

During the summer blockbuster season it seems like every movie gets the 3D treatment, whether it deserves it or not. Sure, you can argue that the visual spectacle of Iron Man 3 or Star Trek Into Darkness earned the right to charge more for a 3D ticket. The Great Gatsby, on the other hand, might have been a bit of a stretch. And Fast 6, I.d argue, could have used the extra 3D kick. At least that screenings in IMAX, where available. The next 3D feature we have this season, though, is Epic, an animated adventure from Ice Age director Chris Wedge that hopes to plunge audience members into a miniaturized forest setting for a story that.s loosely derived from William Joyce.s story of the Leafmen. In the past, 3D and animation have gone hand-in-hand. Is that the case with Epic? Let.s put our glasses on and explore.

This weekend, "Epic," an animated, well, epic that concerns a human girl (Amanda Seyfried) who is shrunk down to microscopic size, hits theaters. It's an amazing romp -- just as impressive as any of the big budget action movies of the summer, but sweeter and more gorgeously rendered. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Steven Tyler, Aziz Ansari, Chris O'Dowd, Beyonce, and Jason Sudeikis, "Epic" is the kind of movie you can take your children too and still be breathlessly entertained. We got to chat with the film's director, Chris Wedge about how he almost left and took the project to Pixar, action movies that inspired the film, and what it was like working with famous composer Danny Elfman. Moviefone: You almost left and took this movie to Pixar. What happened there? It's not a story any of us like to dwell on but it took...

Derivative as all get out and plainly concocted by a committee, "Epic" is a children's animated film that is more entertaining and emotional than it has any right to be.
Characters make sacrifices and die, miss their parents and mourn. And we're touched. At least a little. Hard (if over-familiar) lessons are learned and laughs land on queue. Throw in some truly gorgeous animation and Blue Sky, the studio that made it, delivers more proof that it's moved on from the junky cash-machine "Ice Age" movies, even if this one doesn't rise to the charms and wit of "Rio."
Taking characters from William Joyce children's novel about "Leaf Men" and "Brave Good Bugs," a team of writers has borrowed from "Antz" and "A Bug's Life," and even "Spiderwicke Chronicles," for a story about the fairy forces of life in a forest, the Leaf Men (and women) and their allies, in...

Title: Epic Director: Chris Wedge Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Amanda Seyfried, Pitbull, Beyoncé Knowles, Josh Hutcherson, Judah Friedlander, Colin Farrell, Aziz Ansari, Blake Anderson, Christoph Waltz.. Seems like it’s going to be an Epic Win for the American 3D computer animated fantasy adventure produced by Blue Sky Studios, (‘Ice Age’ and ‘Rio’). ‘Epic’ – directed by Chris Wedge, (‘Ice Age’ and ‘Robots’) – is based on William Joyce’s children book ‘The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs.’ The film portrays the reversed coming-of-age story of a teenage girl who doesn’t believe in magic. Epic’s world, which unites the familiar and the fantastic, is a forest unlike any we’ve seen before: tiny seeds look like boulders; rocks are the size of spiky mountains; flowers are gigantic and complex; and a butterfly is nothing short of a flying tapestry. In this world, director Chris Wedge interweaves spectacular battle scenes with intimate and emotional character interactions, and seasons the tale with humor, fun and romance. While the film’s visual wonders breaks new ground in animated spectacle, realism, action and adventure, it is Epic’s characters and the actors who portray them that take center stage.
Amanda Seyfried plays Mary Katherine (she prefers M.K.), a smart, spirited and headstrong 17-year-old who finds herself on the journey of a lifetime. After returning to her childhood home to connect with her estranged father, Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis), M.K. loses patience with his endless stories...

Your Memorial Day weekend movie choices provide a little something for everyone -- action, comedy, and family-friendly fantasy. "Fast & Furious 6," "The Hangover Part III," and "Epic" are hitting theaters, and we have the details on all three to help you decide what to see over the long holiday weekend. If you're an adrenaline junkie, a gear head, or just a fan of Vin Diesel, the "Fast & Furious" franchise's sixth installment skids into theaters on Friday, and all of the "Fast" cast is back. "Fast 5" left off with Dom (Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker), and their crew high off an elaborate heist in Brazil that netted them $100 million, but also forced them to flee, so they scattered themselves around the world to avoid being caught. "Fast & Furious 6" catches back up with the crew, who are now tired of living life on the run. Enter Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), who...

The director of Robots and Ice Age shifts his focus from tin beings and cool climates to the secret world of forest creatures in Epic, based on William Joyce's book "The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs," that finds Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried) transported to a fantastical world that her father always talked about but that she never thought real.
We sat down with Chris Wedge to chat about his impressive voice cast (Colin Farrell, Beyonce, Josh Hutcherson) and his vision for this whimsical, animated movie that explores a battle between good and evil happening deep in the forest.

There's a new animated feature from a major studio out this weekend, but you wouldn't know it from how little marketing Fox seems to be doing in support of it. Seriously, does anyone know anything about Epic? Has anyone seen a commercial? Is anyone hearing buzz on this? It is, after all, the first movie personally directed by Oscar winner and all around computer-animation big deal Chris Wedge in eight years. Not that that's the sort of detail that sells family films. But at the moment it also has a lot of positive reviews posted to Rotten Tomatoes. Not that many children care about critical reception. Epic is also based on a book by William Joyce, albeit with a changed name (the original title is The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs), who like Wedge has won an...

★★☆☆☆ Little do the oversized world of galumphing humans realise that living in our forests are legions of tiny 'Leafmen', in armour, protecting the natural world from the evils of decay. Under the benevolent rule of a magical queen, this ancient race maintains balance by keeping in check their marauding antagonists, the 'Boggans'. At least this is the world presented in Epic (2013), the latest whiz-bang, polychrome 3D adventure from Blue Sky Studios. It sees director Chris Wedge reunited with author William Joyce (they created 2005's Robots together) to adapt the writer's popular children's book, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs.
Rebranding the story as a grand quest for the soul of a forest, Epic jettisons the vast majority of the source material and brings a human into the mix in the form of M.K. (Amanda Seyfried). She stumbles across the miniature Queen Tara (Beyoncé Knowles) on...

While it might not amount to epic animated filmmaking in terms of scope and invention, Epic, a 3D, CG adventure-fantasy from Blue Sky Studios, nevertheless makes for pleasantly engaging viewing. Set in an enchanted forest realm and featuring Samurai-type foliage inspired by William Joyce’s bestseller, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs (although the screen story and other characters are original), the production represents a satisfying step forward beyond the studio’s wildly successful but dramatically limited Ice Age franchise. With its secret, magical worlds and legions of evil-battling leafy warriors, there’s plenty here to engage young

Amanda Seyfried and her "Epic" co-stars walked a green carpet for the animated film's premiere on Saturday. Fake grass and assorted shrubbery lined Seyfried, Colin Farrell, and Jason Sudeikis's path at the event, and one of their co-stars, comedian Judah Friedlander, even took a moment to relax and lie in the grass, much to the delight of photographers. "Epic" tells the classic story of the ongoing battle between the forces of good, who keep the natural world alive, and the forces of evil, who wish to destroy it. When a teenage girl (Amanda Seyfried) finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she teams up with an elite band of warriors and a crew of comical, larger-than-life figures, to save their world…and ours. The Leafmen characters featured in "Epic" are inspired by William Joyce's book "The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs," which introduced the Samurai-like warriors.

When Martin Scorsese retitled Brian Selznick’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret to ‘Hugo’ there was a case to be made that the film’s title at least retained some of the original’s character, not so with William Joyce’s The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs which Fox have snappily retitled as ‘Epic’.
Good news then that they are working with Blue Sky Studios on this film, which is out on the 22nd of May here in the UK, as the partnership has a solid foundation for new projects. Today we’ve got a new look at a scene from the film which shows off the quality of animation as well as the tone of the film rather well.
Christoph Waltz is Mandrake and he is front and centre in this new clip. The character design is rather fetching and of course the animation is spot on.

It's unreal how 2013 has really kicked it up a notch poster-count-wise. It seems that every major, and soon minor distributor, will be adding 50 posters per movie at this rate. Cards on the table: I really, really liked Rise Of The Guardians. I liked it when I first saw it, and I liked it when I caught up with the film again on Blu-ray (it's out now). Having criticised previous, less ambitious DreamWorks movies in the past, I was one of many who sat back perplexed as to why it didn't ignite at the box office in the way that the studio's previous features had. So: what happened? What went wrong? What could have been done differently?
