Exclusive: As they open The Fall Guy, a TV series-turned-feature, director David Leitch and his 87North producing partner Kelly McCormick are eyeing a beloved graphic novel for a TV series.
Fifth Season has acquired Button Man, an adaptation of the graphic novel by John Wagner, who co-created Judge Dredd and created A History of Violence, latter of which was turned into a terrific action film by David Cronenberg. The graphic novel was illustrated by Arthur Ranson.
Deals are making, but the plan is for Leitch to direct, and he and McCormick will be executive producers alongside Alex Jackson, Roger Kass, Dan Seligmann, and Wagner and Ranson.
While The Fall Guy plays as comedy, Button Man shapes up closer in tone to John Wick, the first installment of which Leitch co-directed with Chad Stahelski.

Jonathan Franzen writes most convincingly about love when writing about birds. In 2010, his love for them inspired a New Yorker essay that followed a band of activists called the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (Cabs) to trapping sites around the Mediterranean. Cabs's mission is to fight south-European poachers, who every year illegally slaughter millions of migrant songbirds for food, money, and sport. Franzen's essay, "Emptying the Skies," describes in stomach-churning detail the poachers' methods of capture, and now that essay has inspired Douglas and Roger Kass's poignant documentary.

The upcoming documentary, based on an essay from acclaimed author Jonathan Franzen, comes out of the revelation that songbird populations have been drastically declining for several decades. "Emptying the Skies" pays tribute to these tiny, globe-spanning songbirds, millions of which are inhumanely trapped and killed for a quick cash exchange on the black market. The film centers on an intrepid squad of pan-European bird-lovers, waging a secret war against poachers to disrupt illegal trapping and to free as many as possible. From directors Douglas Kass and Roger Kass, "Emptying the Skies" has already found acclaim with critics. Above, you can see the film's exclusive poster debut; a dreamlike, triumphant vision of birds freely in flight. It perfectly captures the film's great sense of hope,...

★★★☆☆Gabriela Cowperthwaite's expose of Orca captivity, Blackfish (2013), enjoyed enormous success, rallying people to its cause. Though pitched on a comparatively tiny scale, Douglas and Roger Kass' Emptying the Skies (2013), which DocHouse are screening tonight at Rich Mix Cinema, deals with similar subject matter. Based on novelist Jonathan Franzen's eponymous article of for The New Yorker, the film brings to light the mass killing of migratory birds as they traverse the Mediterranean on their unavoidable annual flightpath. Whilst lacking the polish and punch of its illustrious forbears, Emptying the Skies manages to presents cruelty in black and white, whilst illuminating the grey areas of activism.

"A call to action for anyone who cherishes the natural world" - that's what Ed Arentz and William Schopf of Music Box Films called the documentary "Emptying the Skies." Today, all Us distribution rights to this documentary were acquired by Music Box Films, with Canadian rights going to distributor Films We Like. The documentary was directed by Douglas and Roger Kass and executive produced by Franzen. The John Wagner and Arthur Ranson comic book Button Man: The Killing Game has had a tough road trying to get to the big screen. Originally set to be made by A History of Violence executive producers Roger Kass and Josh Braun, the project is now in active development at DreamWorks with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn set to direct. Now, Deadline is reporting that screenwriter Matt Cook (whose script "By Way of Helena" appeared on the Hollywood Black List) has been commissioned to write the screenplay for Button Man . The plot for Button Man has a group of millionaires, "The Fixers," organizing a deadly game of murder amongst "Button Men," guns-for-hire that they pay to kill one another. Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), the man behind one of the finest films of last year, is in talks with DreamWorks to direct Button Man, an adaptation of the graphic novel, Button Man: The Killing Game, by John Wagner and Arthur Ranson, the former of whom also created Judge Dredd.
After deservedly taking the Best Director award at Cannes for Drive last year, Winding Refn has returned to work with Ryan Gosling on Only God Forgives, a project everyone is already talking about, which promises to be potentially even more stylistically violent than Drive.
Adding to that Button Man: The Killing Game sounds pretty damn awesome:
“The action revolves around Harry Exton, a hired gun who’s offered a fortune to take part in a game organized by bored millionaires that sets trained killers against one another in a fight to the death. The fat cats bet on the proceedings, and...

Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive") is in talks to direct the comic adaptation "Button Man" at DreamWorks says Deadline.
"Judge Dredd" creator John Wagner co-wrote the graphic novel with Arthur Ranson about a hired gun offered a fortune to take part in a game organized by bored millionaires that sets trained killers against one another in a fight to the death.
When Exton gets disgusted and opts out, his only exit strategy might be to off the millionaires funding the competition. Roger Kass, Josh Braun and Michael De Luca will produce.

It’s only been a day since we sighted some photos from his Ryan Gosling reteam, Only God Forgives, but Nicolas Winding Refn‘s next project may already be coming together. According to Deadline, the Dane has entered talks with DreamWorks about taking the reigns on Button Man, an adaptation of John Wagner and Arthur Ranson‘s graphic novel; Roger Kass, Josh Braun, and Michael De Luca are producing.
The set-up — which doesn’t sound entirely unlike a recent box office smash — sees us follow Harry Exton, a hitman who takes up the offer for “a game organized by bored millionaires that sets trained killers against one another in a fight to the death.” Participating in these events upsets Exton’s moral fiber — and he kills people! — though it’s soon evident that offing those behind the show may be his only way of surviving.

NEW YORK Palm Pictures has nabbed North American rights to the Independent Spirit Award-nominated rockumentary You're Gonna Miss Me.
Keven McAlester's feature debut chronicles the live of 60s psychedelic rock pioneer Roky Erickson from the band The 13th Floor Elevators, including his drug addiction and schizophrenia. Palm owner Chris Blackwell said he plans a theatrical release this summer and a retail home video release shortly thereafter.
In a complicated deal, Netflix's Red Envelope bought DVD rights from the producers, then sold retail DVD rights to Palm while retaining Netflix DVD rights. The two companies will be collaborating on the DVD, producing it together and releasing it simultaneously to retail outlets and Netflix subscribers
Palm simultaneously brokered a deal directly for the theatrical and several non-theatrical rights, including second window television. Sundance Channel and Showtime acquired first window television rights.
The film was produced by Adrienne Gruben, McAlester, Lauren Hollingsworth, D.W. Harper and Laura Boyd DeSmeth.
The Palm theatrical deal was brokered for the filmmakers by Josh Braun of Submarine and Roger Kass of RingTheJing Entertainment, and its DVD deal was negotiated with Red Envelope Entertainment head Bahman Naraghi.
