Now that "Dune: Part Two" has arrived and passed multiple box office milestones, director Denis Villeneuve can claim to have done the impossible and successfully adapted Frank Herbert's "unfilmable" 1965 novel. 2021's "Dune" and the sequel's critical and commercial triumphs are well-earned, too, with Villeneuve and his team delivering a truly epic sci-fi two-parter that immerses viewers in a world that feels at once alien and believably real.
The Oscar-winning effects in "Dune" and its sequel create an impressive sense of scale, but they're also remarkable for achieving such a feat without making the films feel akin to the blockbuster CGI-fests we're used to in the modern age. Villeneuve, cinematographer Greig Fraser, and production designer Patrice Vermette managed to craft a world that feels visceral and convincing throughout, despite the heavy use of visual effects. Of course, filming on location in the deserts of Jordan and Abu Dhabi helped a lot in that regard,...

This post contains spoilers for Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" films.
When the Atreides first arrive in Arrakis in "Dune: Part One," we get our first glimpse of the mystical sandworms from the aerial perspective of a roving ornithopter. Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) notices the steady advent of the creature beneath the sand, the disturbance caused by its hidden scale leading up to an awe-inspiring scene: a gigantic, bottomless mouth swallowing one of the spice harvesting machines. As the Atreides do not know much about the Fremen and their relationship with Shai Hulud at this point, this first introduction feels even more intriguing, with a decided air of danger encircling the mysterious worm-like creatures.
Denis Villeneuve maintains the mystique surrounding the sandworms in "Part One" with the aid of a simple, yet effective strategy, where small glimpses of the creatures are peppered throughout to build up to the stunning reveal when...

The next chapter in the mythic journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), following the murder of his father Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) in “Dune,” is to join the Fremen tribe’s fight for survival on the remote desert planet Arrakis. In “Dune: Part Two,” Paul must learn the ways of the Fremen, who make their harsh windswept environment their home by using it as their camouflage, weapon, and, yes, transportation system.
For director Denis Villeneuve, growing up reading author Frank Herbert’s description of the Fremen riding sandworms was the coolest thing he could imagine, but when it came to adapting these scenes to the big screen, the director realized just how much of his imagination would be required to fill in the holes of Herbert’s description.
“I had to imagine how a human being could jump on a worm, because it’s very evasive in the book,” Villeneuve told IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast.

Dune: Part Two is coming into focus, with filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya showing off a new trailer for the Warner Bros. and Legendary sequel at CinemaCon Tuesday.
“Part One is more of a contemplative movie. Part Two is an action-packed, epic, war movie. It is much more dense. We went to all new locations,” said Villeneuve. “I didn’t want a feeling of repititon. It’s all new sets. Everyting is new.”
He also said that while 40 percent of the first film was shot in Imax, 100 percent of this film was shot in Imax.
“In the first movie, Paul is a student,” said Chalamet of his character, Paul Atreides. “We really see Paul Atrides become a leader … become a redeemer of the Fremen people in a sense.”

It turns out Otto Desć wasn’t a Hollywood legend after all.
After a pair of pseudo-documentary spots featuring actor and director Elizabeth Banks, actor Ron Perlman, Vfk supervisor Paul Lambert and cinematographer Mandy Walker aired earlier in the evening during the 2023 Oscars, the program finally revealed that all was not as it seemed.
Otto Desć was, in fact, Autodesk, the software firm that powers the tech behind many of your favorite movies and TV shows.
And the mastermind behind the campaign? Ryan Reynolds, of course. Reynolds produced the spots through his Maximum Effort advertising banner, alongside Jimmy Kimmel‘s Kimmelot.
A source familiar with the commercial’s development says the spots were filmed in late February, and only delivered last week, a quick turnaround for such a high-profile campaign.

Tonight’s Oscar telecast featured a sincere (at least at first) black-and-white tribute to a film industry luminary named Otto Desć.
Despite the praise heaped on Desć by actor-director Elizabeth Banks, actor Ron Perelman, cinematographer Mandy Walker and visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert, it turns out that he doesn’t actually exist. Instead, the spoof commercial is for Autodesk (get it?), a technology vendor with increasing ambitions in Hollywood. (Watch the full video above.)
The commercial was produced by Maximum Effort, Ryan Reynolds’ creative agency and Kimmelot, with the latter’s Dan Sanborn. The spoof gave Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel a voice even during the night’s ad breaks. Two teasers for the full mini-doc aired earlier in the show, laying it on thick about Desć before the final segment revealed the ruse, with the on-screen talent discovering it along with viewers.

Against all odds and projected failures, "Dune" made a huge splash in 2021, partially due to how gorgeous its scenery was. Thanks to folks like production designer Patrice Vermette and special effects supervisor Paul Lambert, the dreary and sand-filled worlds of Arrakis were brought to life in Denis Villeneuve's adaptation. Believe us: it's an overwhelming experience.
Cinematographer Greig Fraser was another important figure that helped bring "Dune" to life, securing his first Oscar for Best Cinematography in 2022 for the film. Using real locations for the movie's shooting, he was tasked to find the perfect balance between making Arrakis and Caladan feel...

It's no secret that "Blade Runner 2049" is a VFX masterclass. Denis Villeneuve's long-awaited sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic "Blade Runner" showcases exactly what can be accomplished by filmmakers with a keen eye and a good visual effects team. The film's VFX even won big at the Academy Awards.
As well as picking up Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins, the film also won Best Visual Effects for the work of John Nelson, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert, and Richard R. Hoover. It's no surprise, of course, "Blade Runner 2049" includes some of the most visually striking effects work in modern cinema, especially those beautiful scenes of...

After already taking home 6 Oscars, Denis Villeneuve’s epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune continued its below the line domination at Sunday’s Academy Awards as it took home the Best Visual Effects Oscar. The film looked to be the favorite in the category after taking home the top honor at this year’s Ves gala.
Accepting the award from presenters Rachel Zegler and Jacob Elordi was Dune‘s VFX team which included Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Brian Connor and Gerd Nefzer. This marked the 6th Oscar for the film having already taken home best Sound, Score, Editing and Production Design for the film which was a favorite to dominate the below-the-line categories going into the ceremony. Lambert and Nefzer had previously won Oscars while working on a Villeneuve film in 2018 for Blade Runner: 2049.

At the 94th Academy Awards, Dune‘s Greig Fraser landed his first Oscar for Best Cinematography, joking that he was happy his award was up early in the broadcast, so that he could “get out and get to the bar.”
“Denis Villeneuve, sir, Master Denis,” Fraser continued, praising the film’s director. “He’s brought a whole group of unknown actors together to make an amazing movie, along with our lovely producers.”
The Dp then went on to thank his collaborators and fellow nominees, including production designer Patrice Vermette, VFX supervisor Paul Lambert, makeup and hair designer Donald Mowat and costume designer Jacqueline West, before paying tribute to his crew, and then his wife and kids.
“Allowing a middle-aged man to go out and play with his friends in the sand dunes for six months is pretty amazing, so thank you,” he said in closing. “I’ll be home in time for dinner.

The films in the running for the 2022 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “Dune,” “Free Guy,” “No Time to Die,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Our odds currently indicate that “Dune” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (4/1), “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (4/1), “No Time to Die” (9/2), and “Free Guy” (9/2).
Included among the 19 individuals are 12 past nominees, four of whom have triumphed at least once. The most shocking snub of this year’s Oscar nominations was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.” “It’s better to be in that position than the opposite,” Villeneuve tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I prefer people say you should have been there instead of ‘what the hell are you doing there?’ I’m not making movies to get awards recognition. If you do that, you’re not walking the right path. I make cinema because I love the art form of cinema. I love making movies. If you had told me a year ago that we would get 10 nominations, including best picture, I would have laughed and said, ” You are out of your mind.”
On this episode of the award-winning “Variety Awards Circuit Podcast,” double Oscar-nominee Villeneuve discusses his passion for creating the world of “Dune” and that best director snub.

Denis Villenuve’s “Dune” is a visceral epic, propelled by practical and visual effects that shape the destiny of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) following a vengeful plot that kills his father, Leto (Oscar Isaac), on the spice-producing planet Arrakis.
The approach for visual-effects supervisor Paul Lambert was to avoid “fixing something in post” but to find ways on set that provided the “best base” to create any necessary elements. One such moment is a stirring scene in which Paul and Leto visit a spice harvester only to be attacked by a terrifying sandworm.
The sequence was a massive collaboration among the behind-the-scenes artisans and starts with the characters flying an ornithopter, a dragonfly-like helicopter, which was practically built from blueprints by production designer Patrice Vermette.
To film moments inside the aircraft it was placed on a hilltop outside Budapest where cinematographer Greig Fraser embraced the glimmering, natural sunlight. A sand-colored...

“The worm was a challenge. But it wasn’t just the worm, it was the worm and the sand,” reveals “Dune” visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert. He recently scored an Oscar nomination for bringing the harsh, sand-covered world of Arrakis to life in Denis Villenueve’s sci-fi epic. The key to delivering photoreal digital effects in the film was to find the right real world references to make this far away world believable. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

The hustle and bustle of awards season is nearing an end, with Oscar voting getting underway on March 17. So naturally, every contender is looking to gain an advantage, and the BAFTA and Critics Choice ceremonies, which take place March 13, provide that opportunity.
At Cca, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” lead the tally with 11 nominations apiece, including best picture. Still, with a group of more than 500 North America-based broadcast journalists and writers doing the voting, we shouldn’t expect either to triumph unequivocally.

The best picture Oscar race is in a dead heat, with any number of paths to victory. But there’s another fierce competition, years in the making, to be the first streaming giant to win the Academy Awards’ most coveted honor.

Very often the Visual Effects Oscar category is one of the more intriguing (and confounding) below-the-line categories because usually few of the nominees have anything to do with the Best Picture race. But there is one Best Picture contender up for this award this year. And going by Gold Derby odds, this isn’t even a close race, because every single Expert and Editor alike thinks the team behind Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” including a couple of VFX wizards from his previous Visual Effects Oscar winner “Blade Runner 2049,” is going to win.
SEEHow to watch ‘Dune’
But this isn’t about predicting the winner, as much as insuring that academy voters and Gold Derbyites have a clearer picture of what “Dune” offers to warrant its nomination in the first place. You only have to watch the film to understand why it’s considered the favorite here, because its visual effects work by Paul Lambert,...

The mighty “Dune” (from Warner Bros.) affirmed its craft dominance on Tuesday by grabbing eight out of a possible nine Oscar nominations (original song wasn’t in play). Thus, Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping and heady sci-fi ran the field with everything else: cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup/hair, original score, production design, sound, and visual effects. Historically, that puts “Dune” right behind “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Titanic,” which both had nine craft noms.
The closest competitors with four noms were Jane Campion’s Netflix western, “The Power of the Dog”, and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake at Fox/Disney — which was two shy of the 1961 original. Landing three noms were Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” at Searchlight/Disney and Daniel Craig’s James Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” at MGM/UA.

As Hollywood eagerly anticipates this Tuesday’s Oscar nominations, all signs to continue to point towards a strong showing for “The Power of the Dog.” Jane Campion’s western, adapted from the Thomas Savage novel of the same name, continues to earn rave reviews for its minimalist script and committed performances from its cast.
Benedict Cumberbatch has earned particular praise for the method acting that he utilized in his performance, going so far as to practice castrating bulls and smoking so many cigarettes on set that he gave himself nicotine poisoning. The effort was certainly worth it, as his performance as brutal rancher Phil Burbank is the heart of the film and has propelled him towards Oscar buzz.

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won four major awards at the 42nd annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday.
“The Power of the Dog” won film of the year, Campion director of the year, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Kodi Smit-McPhee, actor and supporting actor of the year, respectively. This is Campion’s second film to take the Circle’s top honor, 28 years after “The Piano” won in 1994.
Olivia Colman’s performance in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter,” which was snubbed at the BAFTA nominations, earned her the actress of the year award. This is Colman’s third award from the Circle, having previously won for “Tyrannosaur” and “The Favourite.”
Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir Part II” won British/Irish film of the year — two years after its predecessor “The Souvenir” won the same honor. It was one of three films for which Tilda Swinton...
