A potential writers strike would be incredibly harmful for many in Hollywood, but there’s one sector of the entertainment industry that is quietly optimistic that it could lead to a boom for them: the unscripted television makers.
As history has shown, there’s also precedent for an uptick — from the 1988 strike that led to the creation of Fox’s Cops and the 2007-08 strike, which bolstered unscripted shows such as The Amazing Race and Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to Stephen Frears’ drama The Lost King, starring Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Steve Coogan (The Trip), ahead of its world premiere at the 47th Toronto Film Festival.
The film reuniting Frears with writers Coogan and Jeff Pope—who adapted the script for his 2013 dramedy Philomena—tells the remarkable true story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Hawkins), who was behind the real life discovery of King Richard III in 2012 after the remains had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. Her story is one of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. Two-time Oscar nominee Coogan stars alongside two-time Oscar...

IFC Films nabbed North American rights to “The Lost King,” which will have its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed by Stephen Frears, the feel-good true story stars Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley, an amateur historian who uncovered the remains of King Richard the III after they had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching — and searching — for the remnants, even when family, friends and academics openly doubted her.
Steve Coogan (who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pope) is playing Philippa’s husband, John Langley. “The Lost King” reunites Frears with Coogan and Pope, who previously teamed on the Oscar-nominated “Philomena.”
“I’m delighted that ‘The Lost King’ has found a home in North America with IFC Films,” Frears said. “It was hugely enjoyable to work again with Steve and Jeff and we were blessed with an incredible performance from Sally. Toronto is always...

In 1988, reality-tv producer John Langley was plotting out his next show. A few years earlier, his first foray into the then-nascent genre, American Vice: The Doping of a Nation, had brought live drug arrests to prime time. He had the basic premise for a follow-up — follow police officers on the job with no narrator or re-enactments — but there were still crucial stylistic details to sort out.

After 25 seasons on Fox as one of the network's seminal shows, and one that helped to establish its brand, the reality show "Cops" was axed last spring. So creator and executive producer John Langley, with "beloved" son and co-executive producer Morgan Langley, started looking for a new home.
This fall, "Cops" reappeared -- looking much as it always has and still airing on Saturdays -- on male-centric cable network Spike.
"I love Spike, to be honest with you," John Langley tells Zap2it, sitting in the show's production offices in Santa Monica, Calif. "I think Spike is the bee's knees. It's got the right demo. It's a good match. They are excited to have us. They're promoting like mad. All those reasons make it fun."
And, while "Cops" matches Spike's focus on male viewers, it's not leaving the ladies behind.
"We have a surprisingly big female audience as well," Langley says.

We recently reported that, while Fox wasn't cancelling Cops, the network was drastically cutting back on the number of episodes that will air this year. Due to sports programming, Cops won't be seen for the remainder of 2012.
TV Guide recently spoke to Cops executive producer John Langley about the news. He said that the reality show is expected to return in January 2013 with 16-20 new episodes ready to go for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.
Langley notes, "The good news is we're renewed for our 25th year. That's our silver anniversary, a rarity in TV. I don't expect too many shows to reach that landmark."
He also noted that, "If Fox doesn't re-order us after the 25th season, we'll find another home, I'm pretty certain. We've got an audience and will always have an audience no matter what happens.

Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Insiders confirm that the upcoming 25th season of Cops could be the last on Fox. But that doesn't mean the end of the show. Executive producer John Langley tells TV Guide Magazine that he will shop the long-running series elsewhere next spring should Fox decide not to pick up a 26th season.

The creator of "Cops" is getting divorced after 40 years of marriage.John Langley's wife, Maggie, filed divorce docs, citing "irreconcilable differences.""Cops" went on the air in 1989 and is still running. As for how much Langley is worth -- we're guessing a gazillion dollars. There is no evidence of a prenup from the documents, so both John and Maggie would split their fortune 50/50.But Maggie wants more. She's asking for spousal support and she...

For years, people have come from all over the world to visit the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles to follow in the footsteps of celebrities and snap photos of the plaques dedicated to some of the greatest artists of our time. (Then they hop over to Grauman’s Chinese Theater to discover how many of them have shockingly tiny or unreasonably large hands.) But might future generations step right over the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe and wonder where The Situation and Kim Kardashian are? In other words, youths are horrible, horrible people and we are doomed.

Crime novel? I like that! So thank God I’m not here today to write about some fairy-tale or biopic, or whatever…
So, here’s the thing. You know that William Faulkner’s 1931 crime novel titled Sanctuary? Yeah, you already guess, that novel is getting a big screen adaptation! Isn’t that great?
And now, when we know that Pulp Fiction writer Roger Avary will be in charge for the adaptation – it sounds even better!
According to the latest reports, Avary has been tapped by producer John Langley to adapt William Faulkner’s Sanctuary for the big screen. For this project, Langley will team up with Ali exec producer Lee Caplin.
Sanctuary, the novel first published in 1931, is a tale of a changing social order in the South involved characters that include a ruthless moonshine racketeer and other sinister types who commit murder, abduction and other unsavory deeds.

"The Rules of Attraction" writer/director Roger Avary is set to adapt William Faulkner‘s bleak 1931 novel “Sanctuary” for the big screen says Deadline.
The Southern-set tale centers on Temple Drake, an Alabama debutante who gets mixed up with various nefarious individuals including a ruthless moonshine racketeer, kidnappers, killers and bootleggers. Death and sex ensues.

Troubled screenwriter Roger Avary, who co-wrote Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino and recently served a year in jail for a drunk-driving accident, is now adapting William Faulkner's Sanctuary — appropriately, one of the visionary novelist's pulpiest novels. Concerning the rape of a Southern belle, it was Faulkner's first commercially successful novel; it's also pretty damn pulpy, but Faulkner being Faulkner, it's a lot better than a pulp novel about the rape of a Southern belle really needs to be. As the Av Club notes, Sanctuary was adapted in 1933 as The Story of Temple Drake, a film so scandalous that it let to the institution of the Hays Code, a censorship standard that reigned in Hollywood until 1968. (Check out this poster. It does look pretty scandalous.) Adding resonance to Faulkner's lurid tale of crime, Avary's version will be produced by Cops creator John Langley ([...]...

It's been a while since we've heard anything about Roger Avary, the Academy Award winning co-writer of "Pulp Fiction" and there's a reason why. In 2009 he was sentenced to a year in prison for vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving, following a car crash which killed Avary's best friend, Andreas Zini. In July of last year, he finished up his sentence and now it looks like he's getting back to work. Avary has been tapped by producer John Langley ("Brooklyn's Finest," "Leaves Of Grass") to adapt William Faulkner's "Sanctuary" for the big screen. The work is a relatively minor one…...

John Langley, the producer best known for creating and exec producing the long-running reality series Cops, has hired Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary to adapt the William Faulkner novel Sanctuary for a feature. Langley, who most recently produced the features Brooklyn's Finest and Leaves of Grass, is teamed with Ali exec producer Lee Caplin on the effort. First published in 1931, Faulkner's bleak tale of a changing social order in the South involved characters that include a ruthless moonshine racketeer and other sinister types who commit murder, abduction and other unsavory deeds. Just the kind of stuff that was prevalent in Pulp Fiction, for which Avary shared a screenwriting Oscar with Quentin Tarantino.

Cops creator John Langley wasn’t the first person to bring cinema vérité to network TV when his gritty crime series debuted on March 11, 1989, but he was the first to popularize it. Sure, he has his fallback line now — “People say I’m the father of reality TV; I refuse to take credit for some of the bastards that followed” — but he’s happy with his legacy. In its 23rd season, Cops is still averaging 5.1 million viewers on Saturday night. For all the copycat ride-along shows that have followed, and all the cheesy competition series that mutated in the reality TV boom,...

Jim Dangle (Tom Lennon) were on hand later in the evening at Langley's blow out party to congratulate the "Godfather of Reality of TV" with a toast.

If you spot a police car over the next few days, flag it down and thank the men and women inside. For protecting and serving you, sure, but also for allowing a camera crew to document those entertaining educational apprehendings of bad boys. If you can believe it, Cops will hit the 800-episode milestone tonight. (Spoiler Alert: Boa on the loose! Stop that guy running away with drugs!). It’s a feat that few shows ever achieve (and 789 more episodes than Cop Rock ever made). Though little fanfare will be made of this event, we here at EW.com will...

Every year the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Hollywood Historic Trust award sidewalk stars to celebrities who have made an impact in the entertainment world. More than 2,500 stars line the streets of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine.
Last week, it was announced that several TV stars would be getting stars in 2011, including Oprah Winfrey, Tina Fey, Neil Patrick Harris, Danny DeVito, Ed O'Neill, John Wells, the Muppets, and 'Cops' producer John Langley.
How do you get a star? You have to be in the biz for at least five years (or dead five years, if the award is given after a celebrity is deceased), and there are 20 stars awarded every year.

Oprah Winfrey has finally arrived, that slacker. She's landed herself a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Queen of Talk and media mogul extraordinaire is among the honored recipients who will get their very own star on the Hollywood landmark in 2011.
Among the other TV industry folk being honored is Neil Patrick Harris, "30 Rock's" Tina Fey, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" star Danny DeVito, Ed O'Neill of "Modern Family," producer John Wells ("ER," "Southland") and "Cops" series creator John Langley.
On the big screen, The Muppets will get their own star (which should make for a fun ceremony), along with Penelope Cruz, Ed Harris, "High School Musical" choreographer and director Kenny Ortega, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ridley Scott, Sissy Spacek, Donald Sutherland, Reese Witherspoon and a family -- Laura Dern and her parents Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd.
Recording artists won't be ignored either. Posthumous stars will go to Buddy Holly and Louis Prima,...
