Brian Levant's 1994 film version of "The Flintstones" is a classic example of how major studio blockbusters, no matter now successful, can vanish entirely from the public consciousness. "The Flintstones" is rarely regarded in 2024, often seen only as footnote in its actors' careers, or perhaps a whimsical blunder not worth remembering. Those of us alive in 1994 recall the massive advertising glut that came with "The Flintstones," as well as the toy tie-ins, the magazine covers, the Universal Studios attractions, the Williams pinball machine. "The Flintstones" was a studio tentpole writ large, boasting a beloved, decades-old IP and a dazzling cast of celebrities; John Goodman, Rick Moranis, Rosie O'Donnell, and Elizabeth Taylor appeared, while the film boasted cameos from Laraine Newman, Jay Leno, and the B-52's.
Notably, "Jurassic Park" cinematographer Dean Cundey shot the film, while "Jurassic Park" Michael Lantieri similarly served as SFX supervisor. Everything was super-slick and polished nearly to death.

"Minority Report" was shot before the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, but you wouldn't know it. Director Steven Spielberg's 2002 adaptation of Philip K. Dick's 1956 sci-fi novella "The Minority Report" plays almost like a direct response to the post-9/11 War on Terror, in particular the Bush doctrine of preemptive strikes. Set in a version of 2054 where three psychics known as "precogs" are used to locate and arrest people before they commit murder, "Minority Report" wrestles with the concept of free will, in the process raising big questions about due process and profiling. Even the movie's "happy" ending leaves some room for uncertainty about what's to come in the future.
At the same time, "Minority Report" is a blast and a half. Amidst its many weird, creepy moments and noir mystery plot, Spielberg serves up some of the most whiz-bang action scenes he's ever directed. From a bare-knuckle brawl in the...

We might be in the era of The Brand Movie, but the 1990s were a heyday for branded video games and some of the most unlikely people wound up with a game of their own. There's "Chex Mix: Chex Quest," Shelley Duvall's It's A Bird's Life," 7up's "Spot Goes to Hollywood," "Make My Video: Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch," and of course, "Pepsiman." Most of these games are terrible at best and unplayable at worst, but there's a certain charm to playing something so clearly intended to make a quick buck off of name recognition. But then there's "Steven Spielberg's Director's Chair," a game that for all intents and purposes was made with the goal of inspiring the next generation of filmmakers by meeting them halfway and educating them through a medium they were already enjoying.

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in April, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include an anthology, a creature-feature, some found footage, and two slashers.
The House of the Dead (1978)
Directed by Sharron Miller.
The House of the Dead — also known as Last Stop on 13 Street and Alien Zone — is an American stab at an Amicus-style anthology film. Shot in Oklahoma with students from Osu, this low-budget horror omnibus does a creditable job of capturing the macabre spirit of The House That Dripped Blood and The Vault of Horror.

You'll have to get your scrolling finger ready to review the illustrious career of visual effects maestro Phil Tippett. From the gnarly (and LSD-tinged) conjuring of the Rancor in the far, far away galaxy of "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" (for which he would earn a Best Visual Effects Oscar) to his contributions to the ever-popular fantasy "Willow" under the umbrella of the Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) team, the award-winning designer and stop-motion artist is responsible for some of cinema's most breathtaking sights.
This year sees the 25th anniversary of "Starship Troopers," a satirical joyride erected on malicious compliance with its source material and buttressed with spectacular creatures crafted under Tippett's care. By the time he came onto the project, Tippet was still moving on the momentum of his VFX creature showcase (credited as "Dinosaur Supervisor") alongside effects titan Stan Winston in Steven Spielberg's 1993 adventure excursion "Jurassic Park.

While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

HBO is now two episodes deep into Westworld, and we’ve not yet begun to scratch the layers of this world. As our Alan Sepinwall said, HBO has thrown viewers into the deep end. With little to no hand-holding, it’s up to the audience to suss out the cracks in the machine. So far, Westworld has shown us the theme park itself, the entry point for guests, the living quarters of the employees, and the production facilities for the hosts. Perhaps the most mysterious part is what exactly the hosts are. In Episode Two, “Chestnut,” two surgical engineers working on host Maeve (Thandie Newton) lament she’s contracted Mrsa from a guest. For those lucky enough to know what that is, Mrsa is a highly antibiotic-resistant strain of staph bacteria that literally eats abscesses into their host. Do not Google image search. Don’t do it. But how does...

What if I told you "Casper" was an important film in movie history? Twenty years ago today, Universal released "Casper," and it did okay. It was not a critical hit, and it was not a box-office sensation. But in its way, "Casper" was revolutionary, and at the time, I was absolutely fascinated by the movie and, more specifically, by the Ilm work in the film. In late 1994 and early 1995, I was dating/living with/engaged to a young woman who was working in marketing at Universal. She was about as low on the totem pole as she could be, but excited about what she was doing and excited about the various films she got to work on. Because she had to basically immerse herself in each of the films she was working on, that meant I had that same opportunity. I remember reading three scripts in particular during her time there that got me curious.

Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical...

When I recently published a piece about "Fantastic Four," a commenter asked why everyone seems determined to cut slack to Josh Trank as director of that film. While I enjoyed "Chronicle," it's not just a blank check. For my own part, I can only say that I want to see Trank pull it off. I don't know if he will or won't, and it's true… we have only one film to judge. But that does't change the idea that I'd much rather get a great "Fantastic Four" than a bad one, and I'm willing to wait to see if the big choices he's making pay off instead of just pulling that automatic fanboy dismissal of things. I feel the same way about Colin Trevorrow. "Safety Not Guaranteed" is enjoyable, but didn't exactly blow my mind. I am still not sure what it is about that small romantic drama that made...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Even though there’s pretty much no information about the upcoming Jurassic Park 4 film that was announced earlier this week, you’ll find plenty of speculation and discussion about it on the interwebs. So why not jump on that bandwagon and dissect the famous dinosaur movies? Yeah, we’d all like to go back to the original Jurassic Park for this Commentary Commentary, but sadly, Spielberg hasn’t sat down to record his thoughts on that or the sequel. That means we’re left with Jurassic Park 3. The plus side is that we get Stan Winston’s take on the whole thing as he is joined by other members of the film’s special effects team. And on to the commentary… Jurassic Park III (2001) Commentators: Stan Winston, John Rosengrant, Dan Taylor, Michael Lantieri (special effects team) 1. The strongest focus throughout the commentary is the mixture of live-action and practical elements with CGI elements in the same...

Wamg recently attended the Flight press conference held at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. The great thing about press conferences is that you really get a nice glimpse into the creative effort that goes into any given film. For Flight, we got to hear director Robert Zemeckis, screenwriter John Gatins, star Denzel Washington, and other cast members talk about their various approaches and experiences with Flight.
For Zemeckis, Flight marks the return to live-action filmmaking. The innovative director has spent the past decade directing and producing films that utilize motion capture technology and indeed Zemeckis has long been on the forefront of special and visual effects technology in films. However, strong characters with compelling emotional journeys anchor all of his films, including Flight.
Gatins extensively researched real-life air disasters. At that time, the legendary Us Airways .Miracle on the Hudson. river landing accomplished by heroic pilot Sully Sullenberger, was still ten years away.

I think I may have actually felt a little bit of wee come out earlier when we heard the news that the legendary legends (!) from Universal Studios have decided to bring Jurassic Park back to the cinema! They did it with Back to the Future and it as one of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had!
We were all geared up for the Blu-ray release but not we find out that it’s coming back to the cinema. I don’t usually like putting up press releases in full because they can often be boring But anything to do with Jurassic Park being remastered and coming to the big screen is far from boring! There’s also a few pics of the full box set which I’ve placed below so scroll down and read on to find out all your need to know about one of the...

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy and Limited Edition Blu-ray set will hit the street on October 25th 2011! We also have all of the information on the specs and details that will be included in the Blu-ray set. It looks like theres a ton of cool stuff for us to check out. It will be interesting to see how well the special effects on these films stand up on the 1080p Blu-ray in HD. I enjoyed watching these films, the first is obviously the best, but I also liked the two sequels that were made as well, even though they weren't as good. I'l definitley be picking up a set for myself.

Like anyone with a pulse, I am obsessed with "Back to the Future." Whenever I find myself interviewing someone connected to the trilogy, I'm forced to ditch my reporter's hat and morph into a nerdy 8-year-old, probing for juicy info about one of my favorite movies of all time.
In April of '09, I was chatting with Michael Lantieri (a special effects wizard whose credits include "Jurassic Park" and "Hulk") and, though the topic of the day was "Alice in Wonderland," I had to hit him up about his time working magic on all three "Bttf" flicks. He told me he still has a few of those pink Mattel hoverboards in his garage and that Bob Gale, the trilogy's co-writer, has a Mr. Fusion lamp that Lantieri himself put together in 1990 (if you don't know what a Mr. Fusion is, shame on you... now go rent the movies Asap; or better yet,...

Look at ol' Ebenezer Scrooge — now that's a mug not even a mother could love.
Jim Carrey is no doubt a fan, though, because behind all that computer-generated animation is the comedian himself, done up in a performance-capture leotard. An admirer as well, clearly, is Robert Zemeckis, who masterminded the moviemaking magic that not only turned Carrey into Scrooge, but the three ghosts who visit him in this adaptation of Dickens' classic, "A Christmas Carol."
Their 3-D movie arrives just a bit before the Christmas season — on Friday (November 6), before even Thanksgiving — but that's no reason you should feel like it has snuck up on you. The story, about three apparitions who visit penny-pinching Scrooge during...

Christmas is coming early this year — before Thanksgiving, even — and thanks to MTV's exclusive weeklong look at the fall's most anticipated movies, a sneak peek at Jim Carrey's "A Christmas Carol" is arriving even sooner.
And, oh, how much Jim Carrey there will be in this familiar story from Charles Dickens about penny-pinching senior citizen Ebenezer Scrooge and the series of apparitions who pay him visits on Christmas Eve. Carrey plays Scrooge and all three ghosts, but he didn't have to spend hours in the makeup chair to shape-shift from character to character. It's been over a year since Resident Evil: Extinction did well at the box office, but this is the first I'm hearing of plans for a fourth film in the video game adaptation series. Now JoBlo has their hands some information about the in-development film, from an anonymous but "Very Reliable" source. First they tell us that, once again, Paul W.S. Anderson will write the screenplay but not direct the film (he only directed the first film, and has since gone on to make classics like Death Race).Apparently the story is hearkening back to Resident Evil 2, "but with better dialogue" and a darker tone. Behind the scenes, there's enough action and special effects involved not only to hire a martial arts choreographer, but bring in Jurassic Park 3 veteran Michael Lantieri as an effects supervisor.<Br Given the critical response to the third Underworld film last weekend, maybe ...

Video game-based film "Resident Evil" is developing its third sequel and filmmakers are trying to get star Milla Jovovich to reprise her role, according to new reports.
Joblo.com cites a "very reliable" source, saying that "Resident Evil 4" is really happening. Director/producer Paul Anderson has written the screenplay, but is not helming the film.
Just like the first three pictures, the film is also expected to have very dark tones and has enough fighting scenes. Its script will be more like "Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse," but with better dialogue.
Patrick Tatopoulos will be in charge of the zombies' effects. He will be joined by a new special effects supervisor, Michael Lantieri.

Last summer, Paul W.S. Anderson talked about the possibility of a fourth "Resident Evil" flick, and believe it or not, the project really seems to be coming together.
According to the folks at Arrow in the Head, Anderson recently completed the script. A second draft is apparently in the works, and castingis expected to begin soon.
The source also revelead Anderson won't return to direct. Futhermore, Patrick Tatopoulos is expected to work on the creature effects, while Michael Lantieri will supervise the visual effects.
Want more? Shooting for "Resident Evil 4" is expected to take place in Tokyo and Toronto, whith Toronto apparently doubling for Alaska (they must mean the outskirts of Toronto, anyway).
Last but not least, a director will be hired as soon as they have Milla Jovovich back for the role of Alice.

It was only a matter of time before some news surrounding the fourth Resident Evil film would rise to the surface. What is it? Who's directing it? Will we have to suffer through another Paul W.S. Anderson screenplay? Well, some of those questions have been answered today.
Arrow in the Head nabbed themselves some exclusive dirt from a source they deem as most reliable. Here's the scoop:
Paul Anderson wrote the screenplay, but he is not coming back to direct.
The screenplay is more akin to RE2 in terms of style but with better dialogue. The overall tone is also very dark.
There are enough hand-to-hand fights in the script for them to bring in a martial arts choreographer.

A 50-year-old kid with really big toys, Steven Spielberg both enthralls and terrorizes with total success in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park". Arriving nearly four years after the super-blockbuster "Jurassic Park" and the Oscar-winning "Schindler's List", Spielberg's "Lost World" is hardly subtle in its approach or earth-shattering in its themes, but it delivers several big payoffs that will please fans of the first film and help propel the sequel into the outer limits of the boxoffice universe.
Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp ripped up and stomped on author Michael Crichton's best-selling book, reworking characters, dropping most of the narrative and introducing a formidable human antagonist who wants to exploit the monstrous creations of the InGen company and commands a small army to hunt and trap the re-created reptiles on an island off the Costa Rican coast.
With Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough reprising their roles from the first film, "Lost World" pits an able crew of adventurers against big, ugly and obviously unreasonable tyranosaurs, but in this scenario even the cute little scavengers called "compys" are bad news. The movie makes good on its promise to feature more kinds of dinos, and it revels in dazzling monster movie thrills.
There are moments that recall the first film's amusement-park-gone-berserk gambit, but the sequel swings toward sympathy for the once-extinct creatures, particularly a T-rex family including an adult and baby that roar through the fantastic finale. Still, a furious raptor attack and other scenes where humans get munched provide the basic guilty pleasures one pays for.
After some routine character development, the film gets into the groove when the protagonists -- including Julianne Moore as a paleontologist, Goldblum as her boyfriend, Vince Vaughn as a videomaker and Richard Schiff as the nuts-and-bolts guy -- convene on "Site B" to record its denizens for InGen's beleaguered founder.
They come with the most expensive gear and only the best intentions. Goldblum's justly fearful character correctly predicts catastrophe, while even he is caught by surprise when his daughter Vanessa Lee Chester) appears as a stowaway.
The ailing creator of Jurassic Park, John Hammond (Attenborough), has lost control of his company while his odious nephew (Arliss Howard) smells big money in the zoo business. Hammond sends his group, but the upstart nephew heads his own mission to the hitherto secret, uninhabited-by-humans island where the dinosaurs of the first film were created.
Leading the larger expedition is a tireless hunter (Pete Postlethwaite), who dreams of killing a T-rex. As things go terribly wrong, after the opportunists kidnap a baby T-rex, all parties come together on the forested, fright-filled isle. There's a major treat after the primary action is through. "Lost World" improves on the original in many ways -- from the performances to the darker tone -- and it contains a few priceless moments to add to the Spielberg canon.
Taking place mainly at night, the film is superbly photographed by Janusz Kaminski ("Schindler's List"), and the murky, dripping-in-dread locations in Northern California's Redwood Forest are bully. Production designer Rick Carter and editor Michael Kahn are in top form, while the many special effects sequences create wondrous illusions that will be marveled at for some time.
Veteran composer John Williams sparingly uses the first film's stately theme and uncorks a rugged, sometimes savage score. The film's most important feature -- the best dinosaurs ever seen on the big screen, whether full-motion, live-action or CGI -- are the inspired work of Dennis Muren, Stan Winston, Michael Lantieri and many other praiseworthy folks.
