Welcome to the 260th episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:
1. Headlines
Steve Carell and Bill Lawrence, Marvel’s Vision and Silk, Dexter prequel castings and the latest batch of Netflix’s “ratings” highlight the week’s top TV industry headlines.
2. Rip, Freevee
No, we’re not sure what the difference is between Freevee and Amazon with ads, but we’re pouring one out for the Fast channel’s original programming after news broke this week that both critically praised shows High School and Primo were formally canceled.

From the truly iconic Curb Your Enthusiasm to Veep, HBO has always had a taste for a good comedy, but still fails to get the right image of a channel in the eyes of the audience. In people's minds, as the home of The Sopranos, Succession, Game of Thrones and Euphoria, HBO will forever remain a dark channel with nothing to laugh about.
Granted, the comedies that HBO produces are also full of sarcasm and dark humor, but they're still just as entertaining and hilarious as CBS's family-friendly sitcoms. Hopefully, with this new project that combines some legendary names in the sitcom field, the network will attract even more people looking for a good laugh.

Steve Carell has been responsible for some of the funniest characters on the big and small screen this century. Brick Tamland in Anchorman, Michael Scott in The Office, Gru in Despicable Me, Mark R. Naird in Space Force — the list goes on. Now, per THR's reporting, Carell is set to add another notch to his funnyman belt with a starring role in a new HBO comedy from Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence and Scrubs' Matt Tarses.
The victor of a multi-platform bidding war, HBO have ordered the as-yet-untitled show straight-to-series, with a 10-episode first season in development. Lawrence and Tarses, who are currently hard at work on Apple TV's upcoming Vince Vaughn comedy series Bad Monkey, are set to write the first episode of this show, a single-camera comedy set on a college campus that centres around the complicated relationship between an author (presumably Carell) and his daughter.

Though Steve Carell has tried his best to work on great TV shows in recent years, he still can’t shake “The Office.” Sure, he’s made plenty of films and proven he’s a wonderful actor, but everytime he works on a new show, such as the Netflix comedy, “Space Force,” it’s always just a reminder that he was at his peak on “The Office.” Well, now he’s headed to HBO (a network synonymous with quality) to once again try to shake off that ‘Office’ smell.

Also in attendance was actress Amanda Kloots. The Talk host’s late husband Nick Cordero appeared with Braff in Bullets Over Broadway in 2014.

Scrubs is one of the best TV shows of the early ’00s!
The funny sitcom, created by Bill Lawrence, aired from October 2001 to March 2010 on NBC and later ABC, centers around the employees at Sacred Heart Hospital, a teaching hospital.
The show was brought back for a ninth season, called Med School, with the setting moved to a medical school, with several of the original show’s regular cast members returning for main or recurring roles.
The series won two Emmys, along with Golden Globe nominations, a Peabody Award and Humanitas Prizes. Along the way, its stars amassed a sizable amount of wealth.
We’ve put together the main cast of Scrubs, and ranked them from lowest to highest estimated net worth.

Goldstein has remained behind the camera as one of the show’s co-creators and executive producers. With his upcoming guest role, he’ll return to acting on an Apple TV+ series, following his role in Ted Lasso.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: season 3 of "Clone High" and "Jellystone!")
Animation fans (and fans of good movies regardless of style) have been thrust into an emotional tornado spinning as wildly as the Tasmanian Devil regarding the release of director Dave Green ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows") and writer Samy Burch's ("May December") live-action/animated hybrid Looney Tunes courtroom flick, "Coyote vs. Acme." What should be an absolute no-brainer hit at the box office is at risk of being scrapped for a tax write-off despite positive test screenings, the result of yet another frustrating corporate decision prioritizing capitalism over creativity, and an all-out attack on the art of filmmaking.
Of course, you realize, this means war.
Listen, I don't think I need to tell anyone that despite the animation industry...

Get your therapist on the phone: Shrinking is heading back for Season 2.
It's been a painful wait after a cliffhanger finale, and we can't wait to find out what comes next.
Shrinking Season 1 gave us laughter, tears, and a little bit of murder. Will Season 2 resolve the cliffhangers and somehow manage to top a stellar first year?
With all the heart from Bill Lawrence's Ted Lasso mixed with the often dark, always hilarious talent from Brett Goldstein, Shrinking is everything we could ask for in a series.
This upcoming sophomore season is getting closer, so let's get up to speed.
Who is Returning to the Shrinking Season 2 Cast?
We're hoping to see just about everyone from Shrinking Season 1 when the show returns, but so far, only a handful of actors are confirmed to be in the new season.

Channing Dungey first joined Warner Bros. TV Group as chairman in late 2020 — right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, which made for an interesting first year on the job. Then came the Warner Media-Discovery merger in 2022, and the restructuring that came with it. In 2023, the Hollywood strikes disrupted the business again.
“It’s been a lot of tumult since I’ve been in the role,” Dungey recently reflected to Variety. “I’m hoping — and I’m knocking wood as I say this — that as we round the corner into 2024, we’re behind some of those bigger challenges. I’m sure there will be something new on the horizon, but I’m hopeful that 2024 marks a return to business as usual.”
The entertainment industry remains in flux, of course, with more disruption anticipated this year. But in her own corner of the biz, Dungey said she feels some truly positive momentum.

With Succession now in the rearview mirror, Kieran Culkin is looking ahead to his next project — and even fielding offers on the red carpet.
At the 2024 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, where Culkin took home best actor in a drama series, the star was mid-interview with The Hollywood Reporter when Bill Lawrence — creator of Scrubs, Ted Lasso, and most recently, Shrinking — approached with words of praise.
“You’ve very good on your show,” Lawrence told Culkin, “I’d like you to come and be in a comedy sometime if that’s Ok.”
“I’m not very funny,” Culkin insisted, as Lawrence replied, “I’ve seen you be funny a thousand times. We’ll look each other up on IMDb and we’ll find out if we’re good people or not.”
As Lawrence walked away, Culkin exclaimed, “I think I just got a job. Fuck, I should’ve said that I was hilarious.

What is a TV “comedy” in 2023? In an era of blurred genres, it’s not so cut and dry anymore. Opening Variety’s “A Night in the Writer’s Room,” Variety’s Michael Schneider asked the nine comedy writers on stage to raise their hand if their show features a death. Most did. He followed up by asking, how many of those deaths were murders?
Many kept their hands up high — but holding his hand the highest was “Only Murders in the Building” co-creator John Hoffman “I feel like that’s the beauty of [comedy], that you can kind of do anything … pick a world, be specific about it, be stupid about it, and then you’re good,” Hoffman said of the ability now on television to stretch the definition of comedy.

Unsettling also extends Lee’s relationship with Lawrence, Doozer and Wbtv; she was a writer-producer on their hit Apple comedy series Ted Lasso, which was co-created/exec produced by Lawrence,...

CAA’s Ted Chervin joined The Hollywood Reporter senior business editor Ashley Cullins on Wednesday for a keynote conversation at THR’s annual Power Business Managers event to discuss the intertwining of Hollywood and the sports world.
Chervin acknowledged that there’s been a breakdown of barriers between sports and entertainment, and even within entertainment itself, because of “a combination of the democratization of information with social media and other ways that people have of accessing both information and opportunities,” as well as the realization that sports is, essentially, entertainment.
The success of Ted Lasso and the resulting increased American interest in soccer was one such example, as Chervin — who counts Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence as his first client — recalled that when trying to sell the show they encountered “a lot of skepticism.”
“Nobody wanted it: Netflix passed, Amazon passed, HBO Max passed, Apple bought it I would say reluctantly.
