Variety has shared a piece on 2024's streaming titles, confirming Echo is the second most-viewed series on Disney+ this year so far. It's an impressive achievement, particularly as Marvel Studios dropped all five episodes at once, leading to the show being quickly forgotten.
We've seen in recent years that weekly drops are much better for keeping people talking about new titles (which goes against Netflix's once highly successful streaming model of releasing every episode at once).
Rumour has it Echo suffered from quite a few issues behind the scenes, with six instalments becoming five, as a result. That could explain why they hit Disney+ on the same day, though reviews were somewhat positive as is evident from the show's 71% Rotten Tomatoes score.
However, putting this news into context is the fact, "[Percy Jackson and the Olympians] accounts for nearly a quarter of Disney+ original series viewing time so far...

Koren will pen the project starring Shannon as a woman deeply addicted to celebrity news and gossip who finally agrees to get help after her friends and family stage an intervention. But she checks into a fancy celebrity rehab center in Malibu, which she treats more like a stay at the Four Seasons rather than a place to confront her demons.

Around halfway through the fifth episode of Marvel’s Echo, viewers are dropped into the experience of a Choctaw Nation powwow. It’s a first-of-its-kind moment for the MCU, featuring dancers in regalia singing to the drum-driven music. In a poorly lit nearby barn stands Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, in a face-off alongside the women of her family against a notorious New York crime kingpin, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio).
Director Sydney Freeland pitched the moment to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige by recalling how she grew up reading Marvel Comics and attending powwows.
“I’ve read comic books at powwows, for sure — I’ve probably fallen asleep reading comic books at powwows — but those two things never overlapped,” Freeland tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So to have those things come together, to have Kingpin at a powwow, it is a very surreal experience.”

The series traces Maya Lopez’s escape to her Choctaw Nation roots in Oklahoma after her dramatic introduction in Marvel Studios’ 2021 hit, Hawkeye. It also explores her family and legacy, creating a gritty, self-contained tale of power and revenge as she confronts the perilous world of Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire. Directed by Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie, the series sees Alaqua Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprise their roles as Maya Lopez and Kingpin, respectively.
Alaqua Cox, who performed every single stunt in the series, earned high praise from stunt coordinator Mark Scizak.
“Alaqua was extremely dedicated in pre-production and came in every day to train and work with us on building the various fights,” he said.

The following contains spoilers for "Echo."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is vast, which can make it difficult for various stories to stand apart or make their mark. The MCU shows on Disney+ have even more working against them, as there's so much TV out there that divesting people's attention can be difficult. For the latest entry in the MCU, "Echo," the series drew its greatest strength not from other comic books or even superhero cinema, but from another major franchise: "The Fast and the Furious."
While it may not be intentional, "Echo" mirrors "Fast and Furious" in the way Maya (Alaqua Cox) is aided by her extended family, including her estranged grandmother Chula (Tantoo Cardinal), her cousins Biscuits (Cody Lightning) and Bonnie (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), her uncle Henry (Chaske Spencer), and her sorta-grandfather Skully (Graham Greene). Each character offers something very different to Maya, much like the way the...

The following contains spoilers for Marvel's "Echo."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has made interesting detours in its television output, with several shows on Disney+ that serve as side-stories to the greater overarching MCU "phases." Now they've started releasing stories under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner, which allows for much more adult content than the family-friendly MCU fare people have grown accustomed to, and the first mini-series under the banner is "Echo." "Echo" follows the story of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), an Indigenous woman who was taken in by Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) after the death of her father. In the comics, she eventually becomes a superhero through a very long, painful journey that sees her go from one of Kingpin's goons to helping out the New Avengers, even teaming up with Moon Knight and Daredevil along the way. Created by Joe Quesada and David Mack, she's...

Marvel's "Echo" is breaking a lot of barriers by simply existing. To begin with, it's the debut of the Marvel Spotlight banner, which aims to deliver more grounded, character-driven stories that are set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe but don't necessarily require an extensive amount of homework to understand. But more importantly, it's the first time that a Choctaw woman and the people of the Choctaw Nation at large have taken the spotlight in a major Hollywood production. On top of that, "Echo" star Alaqua Cox was born deaf and actually lives life as amputee with a prosthetic leg, just like the character she's portraying.
All of this makes Marvel's "Echo" quite a milestone in representation. In order to capture this underrepresented communities accurately, director and Navajo filmmaker Sydney Freeland made sure to bring in creatives who also represented these communities. As the filmmaker explained to ABC 7 Chicago, "The...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has lost its magic. Gone is the urgency of seeing a new Marvel Studios movie in theaters. Echo, Marvel and Disney’s new five-part limited series, is a groundbreaking piece of television.
This isn’t the same — at least not necessarily — as being a great piece of television, but let’s start by giving credit where credit is due.
Doing an ostensible superhero show — it isn’t always clear that’s what Echo is — in which your protagonist is an Indigenous, deaf amputee will always be steering your vehicle off the paved roads and into uncharted territory. Doing it in a way that respects and honors all three of those outsider experiences without making it feel like you’re working your way down a representational checklist is an audacious and worthwhile thing.
In that respect, Echo is a triumph. It’s a series of moments that alternately had me thinking, “Huh, that feels different and right” and “Huh, I can’t believe somebody was able to do that in a Marvel show.

Marvel fans are gearing up for the release of the latest entry in the comic book franchise with Echo, which features a Native American lead for the first time in a live-action MCU project. But just weeks before the show debuted, Marvel also introduced another Native character to its lineup, that of Kahhori in the animated series What If …?
Praise from fans and critics alike was extremely strong for Kahhori, who is an original character for What If …?, with many calling the character’s episode one of the best of the series. But there were also some viral comments that questioned if Echo was really needed after Kahhori’s breakout moment, as having two Native American characters would be “repetitive,” despite the fact that the two don’t have similar backgrounds and are among the very few diverse characters in the MCU.

Marvel’s Echo series marks the launch of the company’s Marvel Spotlight banner, which will be their platform for “more grounded, character-driven stories” that don’t require a knowledge of “larger MCU continuity” – although the show does serve as a follow-up to the Hawkeye series and has ties to the Netflix Daredevil show and the upcoming Disney+ show Daredevil: Born Again. All of these connections are made clear in the most recent trailer for Echo, which uses stock footage from Hawkeye and Daredevil up front. You can watch it in the embed above.
The Echo character was introduced in the pages of the Daredevil comic book back in 1999, so it’s fitting that her show will have firm ties to Daredevil.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its fair share of good villains over the years, from Tom Hiddleston's Loki to Josh Brolin's Thanos. But few actors have ever embodied a villain from the pages of Marvel Comics quite as well as Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. First making his debut in Netflix's "Daredevil" and later appearing in "Hawkeye," this is one of those legendary perfect actor/perfect role pairings. And good news for those who are fans of the actor as Fisk: he's a big part of the "Echo" series on Disney+. What's more, it sounds like it's going to be the Fisk we all love.

"Echo" serves as a spin-off of 2021's "Hawkeye" and, unassuming though it may be relative to the often grandiose nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this street-level Disney+ series is paving the way for the future. This, according to Marvel Studios' head of streaming Brad Winderbaum, who believes that this show's exploration of a smaller corner of this vast universe is indicative of what we can expect moving forward.
/Film's Ethan Anderton recently attended a press conference for "Echo" with the creative team behind the series, which focuses on Alaqua Cox's Maya Lopez and her adoptive father, Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio). During the conversation, the subject of the McU's future, broadly speaking, came up. On that topic, Winderbaum offered the following:
"Marvel is such a big, vast universe. The comics have been called the greatest ongoing story that's ever been written -- certainly the longest. And there are...

The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.

Matt Johnson’s drama about the meteoric rise of the world’s first smartphone, before its competitive collapse, bowed in Berlin.

Since her debut in 1999’s Daredevil #9, written by David Mack and penciled by Joe Quesada, Echo has gone through many changes. Readers first met Echo as Maya Lopez, an unwitting pawn in the mind games the Kingpin Wilson Fisk played against Matt Murdock. Like Daredevil, Lopez uses her different abilities as a superpower, as her deafness makes her a more attentive observer, resulting in photographic reflexes.
Lopez initially used those abilities to become Echo, a hero with fighting skills on par with Daredevil or Bullseye. Later, she took the name Ronin, a mysterious ninja who fought alongside the Avengers. Most recently, Echo acquired the Phoenix Force and joined the Avengers as Thunderbird.
Next year, Echo makes her most audacious move yet, becoming the main character in a live-action Disney+ series. Played by the Menominee and Mohican actor Alaqua Cox, who is deaf like her character, Echo first emerged in the MCU during Hawkeye season one.

Marvel Studios’ Echo isn’t your normal Disney+ series. No, this series has some bite and doesn’t skimp on gritty, violent action scenes. At least, that’s the vibe laid down in the first official trailer for the comic-book-inspired series starring Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.
Cox was introduced in the role in 2021’s Hawkeye limited series starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld. Vincent D’Onofrio reprises his role as Wilson Fisk / Kingpin from Daredevil and Hawkeye in Echo, with the trailer confirming the series will trace his relationship with Maya.
The cast also includes Chaske Spencer (The English), Graham Greene (1883), Tantoo Cardinal (Killers of the Flower Moon), Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs), Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds), and Cody Lightning.
The event series is the first Marvel Studios show to receive a TV-ma rating. It’s also the first to drop simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu. And, it will mark the...

Marvel Studios is once again making waves, and this time, it’s with their ground-breaking series “Echo.” Scheduled for a simultaneous release on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2024, it will be the first from Marvel Studios to carry a TV-ma rating. For those who are always on the lookout for a good binge, there’s more good news: all five episodes will drop at once!
The series centers on Maya Lopez, also known as Echo, portrayed by Alaqua Cox. After her intense journey in New York during the events of “Hawkeye (2021)”, Maya finds herself back in Oklahoma. Here, she has to grapple with her past, dive deep into her Native American heritage, and connect with her community and family. With the looming shadow of Wilson Fisk, played by the brilliant Vincent D’Onofrio, and the legacy she must confront, the series promises to be an intense ride.
Joining Alaqua and Vincent is an ensemble cast.
