It isn’t just you. We’re two weeks into the new year and every show on TV has become a murder mystery.
There are reality murder mysteries (Traitors) and animated murder mysteries (Grimsburg) and British murder mysteries (Criminal Record) and occult murder mysteries (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale). There are murder mysteries without daylight (True Detective: Night Country) and adapted recent murder mysteries (Fool Me Once) and adapted characters in original murder mysteries (Monsieur Spade).
Those are just January premieres. So far. There’ll be at least one more new murder mystery before the end of the week (The Woman in the Wall).
It’s easy to point to the blockbuster success of the two Knives Out movies and the steady success of the Kenneth Branagh/Michael Green-steered Hercule Poirot movies as a business-driven cause.
Sociologically, it’s easy to point to a decade of distrust of institutional policing...

It must be kind of difficult for any modern-day animated filmmakers to make a film that is going to be popular. Outside of Disney/Pixar, Dreamworks and Studio Ghibli, It’s hard to get noticed. Laika are perhaps the most successful outside of the big few production companies and they did it by making several great animated movies, including Coraline, The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings. But it’s easy to see why the poster for Rally Road Racers says in bold ‘From The Producer Of Shrek’. Unfortunately, that might be one of the few reasons some viewers might give the movie a chance.

Most animated features are designed to be exported to countries all over the world, the voice track redubbed for each local market to add flavour and ensure the kids don’t have to read subtitles. Likewise, having the characters incarnated by talking animals (a tradition dating back to the earliest days of animation), is another handy way to deracialise the material. This way, anyone anywhere watching the same movie can relate to the heroic dog or rabbit or whoever as they go about learning about the value of family or the importance of friendship in a fantasy landscape that bears little resemblance to our actual planet.
This one, apparently a multinational effort judging by its end credits and production companies, weirdly both conforms to and breaks those rules.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about lotsa shows including NCIS: Los Angeles/Hawai’i, Barry, The Flash, Yellowjackets, Fire Country and more!
1 | Why didn’t Fire Country‘s Bode ask to be drug tested again to try to prove his innocence? Also, since Sleeper was still at camp at the time of the actual drug test — here he is in a screenshot, at the line to pee! — why did Manny insist that there was no way he could have tampered with Bode’s test?...

In recent years, films and television shows have been tasked with the mission of depicting under-represented groups on screen while passing a simple litmus test: Who is this for? For American Born Chinese, it’s immediately apparent that the answer is everyone. The show’s characters speak Mandarin about 30 percent of the time, and signs of Asian-Americana are littered throughout. Yet despite its cultural specificities, this adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel of the same name is an obvious play for Disney’s general audience, what with its comic storyline mixed with fantasy and martial arts.
The series begins with Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a teen struggling to find his social footing, being tasked with showing Chinese transfer student Wei-chen (Jim Liu) around school. A culture clash ensues as Wei-chen, due to his accent and awkwardness, thwarts Jin’s burgeoning popularity. Jin is initially horrified by Wei-chen’s...

Actor Ke Huy Quan says portraying an American born Chinese in the upcoming series of the same name “scared the hell” out of him.
Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’s’ historic Oscar wins ‘Beef’ and on May 24, ‘American Born Chinese’.
Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble, reports ‘Variety’.
“I remember when I first heard about this character when I was offered the role, it scared the hell out of me. In fact, I actually passed on it because I told our creative team that this is the type of portrayal that we do not want to see in 2023,” Quan said during a post-screening Q&a at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.

Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year: “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” historic Oscar wins, Netflix’s “Beef” and, on May 24, “American Born Chinese.”
However, despite the nuanced portrayal of the Asian American identity within the phantasmagorical world of Chinese mythology, Ke Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble.

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan was honored with the Gold House Leading Man award at the second annual Gold House Gold Gala on Saturday in Los Angeles.
“When I think of a leading man, I think of someone who is six feet tall with big muscles, good-looking, and a ladies’ man,” the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star said before cracking, “That practically screams me, right?”
While the gala honored the most impactful Asians on the company’s A100 list, which recognizes the 100 Aapi individuals who impacted American culture and society in the last year, the night remained focused on celebrating Asian visibility and achievements. There was little talk of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike currently impacting the industry.
As Quan’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once” co-star Stephanie Hsu celebrated her upcoming film “Joy Ride,” she shouted “WGA Strong” when thanking director Adele Lim, writer Teresa Hsiao and Cherry Chevapravatdumrong.

We hear a lot of stories about method actors going so far with their process that they become a total pain on set, ranging from Dustin Hoffman on "Marathon Man" to Jared Leto on "Morbius" and "Suicide Squad." Of course, there are plenty of method actors who aren't an irritant or a menace on set. Most of them are like that. We just don't hear about them because the stories aren't as weird as sending a rat to your co-star.
But then you have the grandaddy of them all, the man responsible for changing what film acting is: Marlon Brando. For as dynamic and groundbreaking an actor as he was, few actors have garnered as big of a reputation as him for being a really unpleasant co-worker. You have the truly horrific stuff that occurred on set for "Last Tango in Paris," but you also have things like not wanting...

The Golden Globe Awards — organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whose broadcasting deal with NBC ended after the last award was presented on Tuesday night — are now homeless. Did their 80th ceremony set them up to find a new television home, or will their 81st, like this year’s SAG Awards, go untelevised?
Watching the show on TV like the rest of Hollywood’s awards correspondents — whom the HFPA decided to exclude from their event because they disliked our coverage of their recent controversies and blame it on our membership in the Critics Choice Association, which puts on the Critics Choice Awards — I felt like the show was hit and miss.
The host? Jerrod Carmichael reportedly was not the HFPA or NBC’s first choice, nor did he prove to be a good fit for the job. (That’s my opinion; you can read our TV critic’s review of the show here.

The Academy Museum is dedicating November to a monthlong reflection on the history of Chinese depictions in cinema.
“Hollywood Chinese: The First 100 Years,” programmed by documentarian and longtime Academy member Arthur Dong, is a screening series of features and shorts – some classics, some obscurities – that mark both highlights and lowlights of how Chinese have been portrayed in film, particularly in the Western studio system. The series is an evolution of Dong’s 2007 documentary, which kicks off the series Nov. 4, and 2019 book of the same name.
“When people see a film like Hollywood Chinese, they’re really only seeing snippets. We really need to see the whole, because it’s not fair to the artists and the creators that we critique and examine the work based on 30 seconds,” Dong, who previewed his series Oct. 23 as part of his ongoing Hollywood Chinese exhibition at West Hollywood’s famous Formosa Café,...

Amy Tan's iconic exploration of identity, friendship, and womanhood is getting the sequel treatment. In collaboration with Oscar-winning screenwriter Ron Bass, the bestselling author is releasing a sequel to 1993's "The Joy Luck Club," inspired by her 1989 novel of the same name. Like the original movie, the new film - which will also be produced by Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment Group and producer Jeff Kleeman - will tell the multigenerational story of Chinese and Chinese American mothers and daughters as their lives intertwine. Expanding on the source material, the sequel will also see the daughters become mothers and the mothers become grandmothers, adding a new generation of women to the saga.
"Now more than ever it is important to share authentic stories about the Asian-American experience."
"I am thrilled to work with Amy, Ron and Jeff to bring this special film to the screen," Amritraj told Deadline.

A sequel to “The Joy Luck Club” is on its way.
According to Variety, novelist Amy Tan and screenwriter Ron Bass are working on the upcoming flick, which will be a followup to the 1993 movie.
A synopsis for the groundbreaking, ’90s Asian-American film reads, “Four Chinese women along with their mothers delve into their past and try to find answers. Slowly, this search helps them to understand the complex relationship they share with each other.”
The original flick starred Tsai Chin, France Nuyen, Lisa Lu, and Kieu Chinh, as well as Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao, and more.

Almost 30 years after the original’s 1993 release, a sequel to The Joy Luck Club is on the way. Amy Tan and Ron Bass will write the script, with Jeff Kleeman and Ashok Amritraj of Hyde Park Entertainment Group producing. The original film, directed by Wayne Wang, focuses on the life histories of four East Asian women and their daughters. Through their richly-detailed life experiences, the women pass their knowledge onto a new generation, hoping to shape them into strong and independent individuals. Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao, Kieu Chinh, Tsai Chin, France Nuyen, Lisa Lu, Ming-Na Wen, and Lauren Tom, who starred in the original, are in talks to reprise their roles for The Joy Luck Club sequel.
The Joy Luck Club is a well-respected film often credited with changing the face of Asian cinema. The heartfelt drama helped launch the career of Ming-Na Wen, the badass you know from Marvel’s Agents of S.

Atkinson will play Katherine Collier, the whip smart mother of Anna (Lauren Patten) and wife to the powerful tycoon Lawrence Collier (David Marshall Grant). She’s repped by Industry Entertainment.

“Flabbergasted” is Georges Chamchoum’s choice word to use when thinking of Asia’s disappointingly low Oscar representation, especially given all the masterpieces that have come from the region.
Two years after South Korea’s Parasite won best picture, Chamchoum believes events such as the Asian World Film Festival, of which he serves as executive and program director, are essential to raising those statistics moving forward. Thanks to its mission to strengthen ties between the Asian and Hollywood film industries, Chamchoun says, “We are part of the puzzle that puts Asian- American art in the spotlight.”
This year, Awff (founded by Kyrgyz public figure Sadyk Sher-Niyaz) will showcase films to members of the Motion Picture Academy, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. and all the guilds during a critical phase of the awards season leading up to the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The Washington Post corrected a photo caption on Monday that misidentified nearly every actress in a photograph from the seminal 1993 film “The Joy Luck Club.”
The piece, “Why ‘The Joy Luck Club’ is the most interesting — and frustrating — addition to the National Film Registry this year,” featured Kieu Chinh, Ming-Na Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, Tsai Chin, France Nuyen, Lauren Tom, Lisa Lu and Rosalind Chao in a still taken from the film.
But when the piece was first published, the caption misidentified the actresses in order as Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao, Ming-Na Wen, Tsai Chin, Kieu Chinh, Lisa Lu, France Nuyen and Lauren Tom.
“‘From left,’ nearly every name is incorrect. Tsai Chin seems to be the only one they accidentally got right,” Phil Yu, who runs the Angry Asian Man Twitter account, tweeted on Monday alongside a screenshot of the original caption.

The 76th Golden Globe Awards took place Sunday night. On Monday morning, the one-week period of Oscar nomination voting began. There is only one person who is a member of both the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which determines the Globes, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines the Oscars — actress/journalist Lisa Lu. But the fact that, this year, the Globes leads right into the Oscar nominations voting suggests to me that the Oscar noms could also be more shaped by the Globes than is usually the case.

A surprise hit? This ultra-glamorous rom-com about life among the Singapore 1% would be a fantasy, if everything we see weren’t real. Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh head an all-Asian cast in a celebration of ostentatious excess — yep, some folks aren’t hurting at all. As an expression of Asian ascendency and female power, the show may have opened a door to a whole new empire of crossover ethnic fantasies.

“Crazy Rich Asians” may not be predicted to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, but its chances of scoring the all-important ensemble bid at the Screen Actors Guild Awards are better than you might think. Almost every year this decade has included at least one unexpected SAG ensemble nominee that was released in the summer and did not go on to a Best Picture Oscar nomination. The acclaimed cast from “Crazy Rich Asians” could very well make it the film that takes that unique slot at the upcoming SAG Awards.
SEEMichelle Yeoh (‘Crazy Rich Asians’) would be first Asian actress nominated for an Oscar in 12 years
This particular slot has gone to major summer releases like “Bridesmaids” (2011), “The Butler” (2013) and “Straight Outta Compton” (2015), as well as independent films like “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2012), “Captain Fantastic” (2016) and “The Big Sick” (2017). By some measures, China’s rising box office numbers have already surpassed those of the U.S., and India’s film business is the world’s largest by number of films produced.
That’s why the mission of the Asian World Film Festival, which is to strengthen ties between the Asian and Hollywood film industries, is critical to establishing avenues of communication between filmmakers and film executives in the U.S. and in Asia.
This year, Awff will present films from more than 50 Asian countries and showcase them to members of the Motion Picture Academy, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. and all the guilds during a critical phase of the awards season leading up to the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

After weeks of speculation, “Crazy Rich Asians” has landed a release in China. The brash Asian-centric romcom hit is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 30.
Doubt over a release in the world’s second-biggest film market had dogged the Warner Bros. film, with observers wondering whether its depiction of ostentatious wealth among the ethnic Chinese super-elite in Singapore would pass muster with China’s film regulators. The Chinese government has recently tightened its control of the culture and media sectors, insisting that they uphold “core socialist values.”
But film authorities announced Monday that “Crazy Rich Asians” would get an outing in China after all. Warner Bros. is expected to confirm details on Tuesday.
The date is some three and a half months after the picture’s Aug. 15 theatrical outing in North America, and more than two months after its release in some East Asian territories. It released in Singapore, where...
