With one key exception, “Blood Moon” doesn’t really try to hide anything. The final Season 2 installment of the Hulu feature-length anthology series “Into the Dark” is even more stripped down than many of its other counterparts. It’s admirable, considering its ostensible main hook. But this is one of the collection’s better efforts because of how much it resists the expectations that come with it.
For those watching in order, “Blood Moon” makes for a nice complement to last month’s Valentine’s Day-themed “Tentacles”: An opening sequence that drops a main character and the audience right into an immediate sense of danger, a young woman starting over in a new town, and the resulting mechanics of hiding a dark secret.
“Blood Moon” swaps out a meet-cute romance for a thoughtful mother-son story, with Esme (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and her 10-year-old son (Yonas Kibreab) arriving in a remote desert town.

There’s no luck of the Irish this March from Into The Dark, since Emma Tammi’s second directorial invitation is about shapeshifter folklore—St. Patrick’s Day was last year’s edition. With season 2 wrapping its slate, Hulu’s holiday horror anthology avoids any serious double-dipping by ignoring inebriated March madness for a second thematic instance. Adam Mason’s screenplay […]

“There were questions of whether or not we could even have two actors in a shot together.”
That’s what writer-director Adam Mason faced in the days leading up to filming Songbird, his pandemic thriller that, in July, became the first film to go into production in Los Angeles after the city-enacted Covid-19 shutdowns. The Songbird team, which included producer Michael Bay, had conversations about doing split screens and other tricks to make the movie work, but fortunately, Covid testing became more available just in time to change the script for the better.

Initially conceived as a creature-feature, coronavirus gave Songbird, the first film shot in LA since March, a terrifyingly real monster. Its British director explains how he wrangled Michael Bay, Demi Moore – and vacuum-packed props
What did you do over lockdown? Learn the oboe? Tick off the complete works of Proust? Bake your own weight in banana bread? British director Adam Mason made a big, starry, topical thriller; the first film to be shot in Los Angeles since the pandemic took hold.
Action supremo Michael Bay was a co-producer; the cast includes Demi Moore, Bradley Whitford and Craig Robinson. “I just thought I’d get a group of friends together, and write something for them to shoot on their iPhones,” says Mason. Instead he wrote Songbird, a sci-fi action movie which will be in every history book that covers the film business in its rockiest year to date.

Adam Mason’s “Songbird” is billed as the first Hollywood feature to be made during quarantine, and this impressively scaled pandemic-themed riff on “The Purge” couldn’t be prouder of itself for that accomplishment. The project announces its own topicality before the studio company logos have even played out during the opening credits, as snippets of news audio bark at us about the death toll of Covid-23 (a mutated coronavirus that’s evolved to attack brain tissue and kill people within 48 hours of infection), and not a single minute of the slapdash movie that follows allows you to forget that it was conceived, pitched, written, shot, edited, and released since lockdown started in March.

No doubt far more fascinating than “Songbird” is the behind-the-scenes story of how this film was even made in the first place, shot entirely during the Covid-19 pandemic with most cast members interacting with as few other performers as possible.
Part of that story, one would hope, would include director and co-writer Adam Mason explaining what aspect of this dull, tacky thriller justified exploiting a pandemic that is still, as of the week of the film’s release, killing thousands of people every day.
It’s not inherently misguided to use a current tragedy as the jumping-off point of a genre movie, but any filmmaker who decides to do so had better create something provocative or interesting or at least competent to justify it. “Songbird” doesn’t even offer the prospect of staggeringly bad taste or questionable politics; it’s less “Too soon!” and more “So what?” We’re left...

Nine months after launching its new theatrical distribution operation, Japanese pay TV broadcaster Wowow has made its first theatrical film acquisition, closing an all-rights deal for pandemic thriller Songbird, starring Kj Apa, Sofia Carson, Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Walter Hauser and Demi Moore.
Produced by Michael Bay and Adam Goodman, and directed by Adam Mason, the dystopian (but all too real) film is set in 2022 as another pandemic ravages the world and its cities. The film zones in on a handful of people as they navigate the obstacles hindering society: disease, martial law, quarantine, and vigilantes.
Screenplay was written by Adam Mason and his writing partner Simon Boyes during the early part of the lockdown. The film was among the first features to shoot in Los Angeles after lockdown restrictions were eased.

The Coronavirus pandemic has changed the world as we know it this year, and it looks like it’ll be a long time yet before society returns to what used to be considered normality, if it even happens at all. At this stage, a lot of people are exhausted by the various rules, restrictions and regulations that have been put in place, but Michael Bay has come along and produced a movie that uses everyone’s misery as the basis for an action-heavy thriller.
Ironically, Songbird was originally scheduled for a big screen release, but the continued uncertainty surrounding the theatrical industry has seen it pulled from the calendar and sent straight to VOD, arriving on December 11th. Adam Mason directs with Bay’s Platinum Dunes handling production, and despite managing to shoot an entire movie during the height of a real-world pandemic, Songbird might hit a little too close to home for some audiences.

In a release plan fitting for a movie about a deadly pandemic that’s forced everyone into lockdown, STX’s sci-fi thriller “Songbird” won’t play in theaters and instead will debut on home entertainment.
Starting on Dec. 11, audiences can rent the film for $19.99 for a 48-hour period. STX said “Songbird” will land on a streaming service following its premium video-on-demand run, but the studio declined to disclose which one.
“The pandemic has affected every aspect of our business, from production to release, but ‘Songbird’ demonstrates that a nimble studio like STX can find effective and profitable ways to make their movies work,” said STXfilms Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson. “The show must go on. ‘Songbird’ is a thrilling movie that will speak to audiences in this moment as it keeps them on the edge of their seats.”

Exclusive: After weighing several options, Michael Bay has set his next movie, coming on to direct the action thriller Ambulance with Jake Gyllenhaal in negotiations to star. Bay is fast-tracking the project and is talking to other actors to join Gyllenhaal with plans to shoot top of January. No distribution deal has closed yet, but sources say Universal Pictures is finalizing a deal to land distribution rights.
Chris Fedak penned the original script, which is based on the original Danish Film Ambulancen produced by Nordisk Film Productions. James Vanderbilt, Bradley Fischer and Will Sherak are producing. The logline is being kept under wraps, but insiders say the film is the vein of the great action thrillers of the ’90s like Speed and Bay’s Bad Boys. The script has been highly coveted for years but never able to lock down a director before Bay got his hands on it and instantly fell in love.
