Exclusive: Robbie Fairchild, a Broadway lead and former New York City Ballet principal dancer, will star in the stage version of Michel Hazanavicius’ 2011 Oscar-winning movie The Artist, set in the 1920s when movies found their voice with the advent of talking pictures.
Fairchild received a Tony Award nomination for An American In Paris, another show based on a celebrated movie when it premiered on Broadway in 2015. Two years later, he helped launch that show in the West End.
In The Artist, he will play Silent Era matinee idol George Valentin, who finds his career torn away from him when the talkies arrive.
The part won French actor Jean Dujardin the Best Actor Oscar.
The Artist, co-written for the theater by Drew McOnie and playwright and screenwriter Lindsey Ferrentino, will have its world premiere at the Theatre Royal Plymouth from May 11 to May...

Nearly one year ago, on March 22, 2018, the new Broadway musical Frozen opened at New York’s historic St. James Theatre and became an instant hit. Frozen has been in the top 10 best-selling shows every week since its opening, grossing more than any new Broadway musical since Hamilton and setting four St. James Theatre house records in less than a year. Now, in celebration of the musical’s first smash year on Broadway, Disney Theatrical Productions has announced worldwide expansion plans for Frozen, with international productions planned for Australia, London and Germany.
“Jennifer Lee, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez have crafted a gorgeous stage musical and we’re so grateful that Broadway has taken it to its heart,” said Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer, Disney Theatrical Productions. “That’s why every production will be handmade, with our brilliant director Michael Grandage and original creators working alongside the local teams to create the...

Broadway’s Frozen will be Tony Award-eligible for Best Original Score despite a portion of it – and “Let It Go”, of course – coming from the movie.
That eligibility determination was one of seven made today by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. Other decisions include Frozen actresses Caissie Levy and Patti Murin both eligible in the leading role category, and Andrew Garfield eligible as a Leading Actor among the large cast of Angels in America.
Many of the determinations involve leading vs. featured categories: Both Laurie Metcalf and Alison Pill of Three Tall Women are eligible in featured, presumably leaving the lead spot to Glenda Jackson.
In the choreography category, Finn Caldwell, Steven Hoggett and Robby Graham will be considered jointly for Angels in America. Hoggett and Graham are credited with “movement” for the play, while Caldwell is credited as puppetry director.

The Rocky Mountains made for the picture perfect background as Vanity Faircaptured the stars of Broadway-bound’s Frozenin their first photo shoot for a media outlet -- and Et has an exclusive look behind the scenes.
On top of Copper Mountain outside of Denver, Colorado, Patti Murin (Anna), Caissie Levy (Elsa) and Jelani Alladin (Kristoff) are dressed in their characters’ famous costumes, designed by Christopher Oram for the stage. Meant to look like the story’s Norway setting, fake snow adds extra detail to images of Elsa wearing a light blue-colored gown and cape posing on what appears to be the top of her ice castle. She waves her arms in a similar manner to how the Disney princess did in the top-grossing animated film of all time. When you’re a director like Ridley Scott, you can pretty much get any actor you want for your movies, and for his last three or four movies, he’s assemble some amazing ensembles. That was definitely true for Prometheus and The Martian, and just as much for his Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant.
Of course, Michael Fassbender is back as the synthetic android David (and as a second synthetic named Walter), and actress Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) takes on the strong female role of Daniels. Playing the ship’s captain, Christopher Oram, is Billy Crudup, while Danny McBride plays the pilot Tennessee, while Jussie Smollett, probably best known for his role as Jamal on Fox’s Empire, is Sergeant Ricks.

If the subscriber cover of this month’s Empire Magazine features the Xenomorph in stasis – drawn up by artist Jacey, you can find the mythic one-sheet right here – then the standard cover for Alien: Covenant awakens the beast in truly horrific fashion.
Teeth baring, the nightmarish close-up is awfully similar to the final shot of Covenant‘s most recent trailer, in which a fully grown Xenomorph clutches onto an airborne ship, much to the horror of Danny McBride’s captain Tennessee. Because make no mistake, if you felt that Prometheus was decidedly lacking in the horror department, Alien: Covenant looks set to herald a return to the series’ roots – and hopefully a return to form – what with Ridley Scott promising an R-rated helping of extraterrestrial terror. Expect blood, then, lots and lots of blood.

"You hear that?" It's almost time. 20th Century Fox has released two promo spots for Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, his follow-up to Prometheus and return to the Alien universe. These new spots are labeled as "Crew Messages", and are essentially video recordings from the crew itself. One of them features Katherine Waterston as Daniels, the other one features Billy Crudup as Christopher Oram. The full cast includes Michael Fassbender, Danny McBride, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Uli Latukefu, Benjamin Rigby, and Amy Seimetz. The footage starts out with each of them talking to the camera, but then cuts in with Pov footage of them on the mission until things go awry and the transmission ends. These are pretty cool, a good way to continue to keep us hyped for this movie. See below. Here's the new "Crew Messages" promo spots for Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant,...

Christopher Oram and Daniels post a pair of haunting transmissions in the latest pair of viral clips for Ridley Scott’s prequel-sequel, Alien: Covenant.
The former is played by Billy Crudup and is described as a man of faith, one who considers the Covenant crew arbiters of destiny. Daniels, meanwhile, is the terraforming expert on board Scott’s space vessel, and judging by her own transmission, Alien: Covenant will involve humanity’s first major colonization mission to the cosmos. That expedition takes an unexpected detour when Danny McBride’s captain decides to answer a distress call on a far-flung planet – such is the Alien way – and it’s here where the crew encounter unimaginable horror.

In anticipation of the release of Alien Covenant this summer, South by Southwest welcomed Ridley Scott for the very first time to screen his 1979 classic Alien for the Austin, Texas crowd.
Scott did not come alone as he was joined by stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston and Danny McBride, all with something special for the crowd in attendance.
Before the screening of Alien, Scott greeted the audience with news they would be getting a sneak peek of a few scenes from Alien: Covenant two months before the release. Scott urged the audience he had been trying to do what he always has tried, “scare the living shit out of you.”
So what did we learn? Here is a breakdown of the three scenes shown. Obviously spoilers are ahead but nothing that isn’t hinted at in the recently released trailer.

Looks like Disney's Frozen has a new director in place. Following the exit early last month of the project's original director, Alex Timbers, sources with knowledge of the production say lauded Brit director Michael Grandage has now signed on to stage the Broadway-bound musical, bringing his regular design collaborator, Christopher Oram, as part of the package. Grandage won the Tony Award for best direction of a play in 2010 for John Logan's Red, and was nominated two other times, for Frost/Nixon in 2007 and for The Cripple of Inishmaan in 2014. Let’s call it “Nightclerks.” It’s the best painting that Edward Hopper never painted, and you can see it at Broadway’s Booth Theatre in the new revival of “Hughie,” which opened Thursday. No one captured urban isolation on canvas better than Hopper, and if he’d ever decided to paint the inside of a once elegant, now slightly crumbling lobby of a hotel in Times Square, placing a faceless clerk alone behind the counter, this “Hughie” as designed by Christopher Oram and directed by Michael Grandage would be it. Of course, the clerk (Frank Wood) must be bald.

The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company kicks off its inaugural, year-long residency at the Garrick Theatre in London's West End with a curious theatrical triptych — two shows built from three different pieces by two different playwrights, all outlined in one billing block in the program that covers a common cast, the direction credited to Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, and set and costume design by Christopher Oram. Do the math and altogether they add up to one long, by turns sad, funny and nostalgic meditation on regret, familial feeling and theatricality itself. First, if not foremost, comes The Winter's

Here is something a bit different for Rope of Silicon. Sure, we have award predictions for the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes, but that makes sense, considering this is site is 95% about movies. But there are plenty of other stories out there being told in theaters that get plenty of respect. Except these are stories performed live right in front of your face. So, I took it upon myself to comb through the absurd amount of categories of the Tony Awards, which is this Sunday June 7, to give you my predictions on what will win. I am doing this not just because it is fun to predict things and hope I get them all right, though that is certainly part of it, but I also want to shed light on these projects that a lot of people don't know about. Will Neil Patrick Harris claim his first Tony Award this Sunday for his gender-bending turn in the musical revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Probably. Will fellow multiple-Emmy winner Bryan Cranston win for playing Lyndon B. Johnson in the biodrama All the Way? Count on it. But will it be the Carole King biomusical Beautiful or the murderously funny A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder that earns top honors as the Best New Musical of the Broadway season?
On that point, as on many other tight races in this year’s Tony contest, EW critics Melissa Rose Bernardo and Thom Geier are divided.

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...

Noël Coward; Donmar; Royal Court, London
The Michael Grandage plan is working. Stars and cheap tickets are bringing new audiences to his West End season, with 25% of the tickets going to first-time bookers.
Now Harry Potter fans are confronted with a gloriously perverse writing talent. The Cripple of Inishmaan is Grandage's most unlikely combination to date. Smooth-faced Daniel Radcliffe takes the title role in provocative Martin McDonagh's 1997 play. The neat, adored boy wizard plays a shambolic youth no one wants to kiss. As directed by Grandage, this looks like a cunning wheeze.
You would not pick Radcliffe out as a soaring talent if you saw him with an innocent eye on the stage. Yet neither would you mark him down as a star who has blundered on to the boards. More assured than he was in his last stage appearance, in Equus, he is restrained and controlled in a...

Imagine a dramatic hero who stands no chance of being kissed "unless it was by a blind girl" and of whom it is said, by an adoptive aunt, "you'd see nicer eyes on a goat". Daniel Radcliffe is not the first name that would leap to mind in the casting of such a role. But he is the undoubted star of Michael Grandage's revival of Martin McDonagh's 1997 play and proves, as he did in Equus, that he is a fine stage actor with a gift for playing social outsiders.
Radcliffe is the eponymous hero, a disabled 17-year-old orphan named Billy Claven, of McDonagh's ingenious play. Dejected and generally derided, the bookish Billy is brought up by his "aunties" on the isle of Inishmaan. But the dullness of daily life is suddenly relieved when in 1934 Hollywood film-maker Robert Flaherty descends on a neighbouring isle to make...

In its first Broadway revival since it stormed the city in 1979 and won seven Tony Awards, "Evita" is back at the Marquis Theatre
Of course, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's operatic masterpiece packs the same power. There's the addition of one song from the movie version, but this is not just a remounting. There are substantial differences between the revival and the original, and that's not always for the best.
Pop sensation Ricky Martin as a sly, somewhat removed Che, is fabulous. He's in great voice, moves with sexy confidence and has a sardonic take on the ambitious girl's rise out of the sticks to ruling the country. He's wise to everything and sings the expository role with the elan of a leading man.
Stepping onto that famous balcony, where Eva Peron greeted "her people" with the iconic "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," is Elena Roger, who performed this in London.

New York -- Much of the buzz coming from the new revival "Evita" has been about the spitfire Argentine playing the title role. But all of the heat actually comes from the guy shaking his bon-bon.
Ricky Martin is easily the best thing about this revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's bio of Eva Peron, which opened Thursday at the Marquis Theatre. He sings beautifully, dances gracefully, athletically climbs ladders, plays his role with a knowing sneer and elicits drools in his suspenders and tight white shirt. He even makes a mustache work.
In fact, maybe it's time for Broadway to have a new rule: Put Ricky Martin in everything. He would fit in happily at "Newsies." He would definitely enliven "Death of a Salesman." Heck, put him in "Mary Poppins" and watch the roof really lift off.
Crisply directed by Michael Grandage ("Frost/Nixon"), with high-kicking choreography by Rob Ashford...

London theatre bosses are touting Madonna to reprise her film role of Argentina's first lady Eva Peron in a new production of Evita. The Material Girl fought off a host of Hollywood actresses to play the glamorous wife of corrupt Argentine president Juan Peron in the 1996 film. Previous plans to resurrect the musical in the British capital collapsed in 2003 when its authors Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber decided the city was not in the mood for serious musicals. However, now the same creative team, comprising of director Michael Grandage, choreographer Rob Ashford and designer Christopher Oram, are in discussions to launch Evita in the West End next year, and hope Madonna will step into Peron's expensive shoes.
