Longtime Hollywood literary agent Mickey “The Cowboy” Freiberg died yesterday at his West Los Angeles home after a three-year battle with brain cancer, his family said. He was 72. Freiberg represented numerous award-winning clients throughout a 40-plus-year career, including the late Budd Schulberg who won a screenwriting Oscar for 1954′s On The Waterfront, author Homer Hickam whose book Rocket Boys became the basis for the 1999 film October Sky, and Ron Powers, who co-authored Flags Of Our Fathers, the book on which the 2006 Clint Eastwood-directed war film was based. He also represented Joe Pistone, the former FBI special agent who worked undercover as Donnie Brasco, The Bonanno Family (Mafia Marriage) and the late Bill Bonnano, co-author of The Good Guys with David Fisher. One of Freiberg’s proudest projects was the David Permut-produced film Youth In Revolt, based on the novel written by C.D. Payne and brought to Permut by...

Making a dick joke is rarely poignantly commemorated in a film, let alone the foundation for one for its most tender moments. Yet in "Cedar Rapids" when the sheltered insurance agent Tim Lippe (Ed Helms) fumbles upon a phallic observation during a hot dog eating contest and awaits approval like a puppy from his newfound colleagues and potential friends (John C. Reilly, "The Wire"'s Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Anne Heche, the woman with the wiener in her mouth at the time), it's a crucial part in what director Miguel Arteta says drew him to his latest film, "that heartwarming feeling that you get when those four people fall in love with each other."
Love has been a complicated thing in Arteta's films to date, sending Michael Cera off to create a confidence-boosting alter ego of himself in the adaptation of C.D. Payne's "Youth in Revolt," a neglected Jennifer Aniston...

Michael Cera has played another "Superbad" character in this quirky comedy, two times over. Cera plays his role of Nick Twisp well, along with his second character of Francois Dillinger, his French, polyester pant wearing alter ego. Nick is a nerdy teen that is still a virgin, bringing on the "teenager trying to find his first girl" scenario once again. Although based on the book of the same title written by C.D. Payne, this scenario is not played out like the thousand other "virgin looking for a girl" type movies. ...

Chicago – Some actors are so brilliantly in command of their abilities that their efforts are routinely taken for granted. Michael Cera’s utter failure to hit a single false note onscreen has led some to believe that he’s simply playing himself, as if playing oneself was somehow easy to begin with.
Cera’s comic persona is as impenetrable as Woody Allen’s. He embodies vulnerable neurotic teenage angst with an authenticity unmatched by any actor in recent years. His best lines are delivered under the breath and at odd angles, striking the funny bone with impeccable deadpan timing. After Hollywood tried (and failed) to turn him into a commercial commodity, with “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” and the embarrassing “Year One,” it’s a relief to see Cera in a role that proves he has a range beyond the persona he has mastered.

The Book of Eli
Under the direction of Albert and Allen Hughes, this post-apocalyptic rocks along nicely. It's a straight-ahead genre flick, heavily styled to within an inch of its life; Denzel Washington plays a laconic semi-religious Western hero, guarding a mysterious book as he makes his way across an empty landscape. Not entirely empty, though, since he has to deal with the likes of the villainous Gary Oldman and the opportunistic Mila Kunis. A good, entertaining romp. Rent it.

Hey everyone! Just here to let you all know what's coming out this week on DVD. Also just because I am an avid fan I would like to mention that Trueblood, Burn Notice, and Weeds have just started again!! I Love those shows. I hope everyone is having a great summer so far if it is summer for you that is. In Washington state right now where I live it's 49 degrees and raining (I think I am the only one that likes it this way instead of the heat). It's perfect weather to get comfy on the couch and play Red Dead Redemption! Anyways! We're off!

Another Tuesday coming up means another week of collecting and watching awesome movies that have hit shelves at your local video store. Here’s what’s good, okay and horrible:
Grab ‘Em Right Away:
Vengeance Trilogy Bluray
Directed by: Park Chan-Wook
Written by: Park Chan-Wook
Starring: Min-sik Choi, Yeong-ae Lee & Kang-ho Song
Why should you buy this? Because it’s without a doubt the greatest revenge trilogy ever made. Made up of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, each film does its best to surpass its previous installment and succeeds. Even though none of the films have recurring characters, the universal theme keeps everything on the same playing field rather brilliantly. Chan-wook has one of the most demented and twisted minds in cinema. His films have such a unique style visually and narratively, upped by brilliant and satisfying endings you can’t help but love.

Director Miguel Arteta would like to be known as the man who gives voice to awkward dorks everywhere. "Dorkiness is my realm in which I live, so I celebrate dorkiness," the director of "Chuck & Buck" and "Star Maps" says proudly. It's been eight years since Arteta's last film, "The Good Girl," which was honored by the National Board of Review. He's spent a lot of that time helming for TV, but his newest feature, "Youth in Revolt," is worth the wait. Actor Michael Cera has never been better as Nick Twisp, a 16-year-old desperate to lose his virginity to the girl of his dreams. That might sound like the pithy premise of a "Road Trip"– or "American Pie"–type jock fest, but "Youth in Revolt" has the substance to back it up, thanks to C.D. Payne's original novel. Cera's character creates an alter ego reminiscent of Tyler Durden in...

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.
If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:

Youth in Revolt Directed by: Miguel Arteta Written by: Gustin Nash (screenplay), C.D. Payne (novel) Starring: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi, Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart, Mary Kay Place, Justin Long Ever since his debut as George-Michael on Arrested Development, Michael Cera has been pigeonholed as the shy, soft-spoken nerd, the awkward outcast who has trouble talking to girls. Whether or not you find him cute and endearing, you have to admit that he suits the role quite well, and has managed to turn in some pretty hilarious performances over the past few years. Still, for some reason people are suddenly insisting that he needs to do something different in order to prove his worth (nevermind the fact that most comedic actors simply play the same role over and over again). Perhaps in response to these people, we now have Youth in Revolt, the next phase in Michael Cera's evolution!

There's nothing inherently wrong with adapting a book into a movie. Some of the best and most affecting American films have been based on novels -- The Godfather, Psycho, To Kill a Mockingbird, and I'm just randomly culling from AFI's 1998 list -- and it makes sense, in a way. Rather than take a chance on creating a new story, a writer or director or team of producers can start with one they know has had an impact on at least a few people. It's a totally respectable corner to cut, as it were. But the big problem that can come with an adaptations is when the finished film feels like an adaptation, that is, feels like a slipshod assembly of characters and scenes that should probably mean more and that carry an air of importance that's impossible to justify. Right behind that one is when the film deviates from the...

At times, watching Youth in Revolt is nearly as awkward as adolescence itself. There's such promise in the source material (C.D. Payne's hilarious novel), the filmmaker (The Good Girl's Miguel Arteta) and the cast (Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi and Fred Willard, to name a few), so it's disappointing when it doesn't live up to its potential. Plus, like some other adolescent, umm, experiences, Youth in Revolt peaks too early, leaving the audience bored and unsatisfied once it passes its halfway mark.
However, its first 45 minutes represent some of the best teen comedy in years. There's a verve and anarchic spirit rarely present in PG-13 films that are aimed at the pre-college set, giving Youth in Revolt more of an edge than its peers. It deserves its MPAA-given R-rating, and not just for its language (filthy) and sense of humor (raunchy), but for the fact that it...

'Youth In Revolt' movie gets great reviews from top critics. Top movie critics apparently loved Dimension Film's new comedy flick, "Youth in Revolt" just as much as I did. They gave it mostly Bs and only one C. It stars: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Justin Long, Jean Smart, Ari Graynor, Fred Willard, Zach Galifianakis, Mary Kay Place, and Rooney Mara. Ty Burr from the Boston Globe gave it a B-. He stated, "The movie’s based on a popular series of books by C.D. Payne that are smarter, funnier, and more filthy-minded than you’d expect." Roger Ebert over at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a B rating. He said, "One of the secrets of Youth in Revolt is that Nick seems bewildered by his own desires and strategies." Matt Pais of the Chicago Tribune gave it a B-, stating, "Youth in Revolt" is...

This week finally sees the release of Youth in Revolt, the film version of C.D. Payne's 1993 novel. Considering the book's length (about 500 pages), director Miguel Arteta and screenwriter Gustin Nash faced the unenviable task of deciding what should remain and what should be excised. How do you make a 90-minute film that pleases the novel's legion of fans while remaining accessible to a larger audience that has never read it?
It's a challenge familiar to sci-fi fans. We've probably all experienced that moment of utter disbelief that a favorite story or novel has been twisted and mangled beyond recognition. But when the filmmakers get it right, honoring the spirit and creating a work that lives apart from its inspiration, it's magical. Regrettably, I don't read as many novels nowadays as in my earlier years, so I've never read the source material for some of my favorite science fiction films (e.

Youth in Revolt is a movie full of Michael Ceras. Cera stars in the film playing a dual role both as virgin nerd Nick Twisp and Nick’s newly created, bad boy alternate personality Francois Dillinger. But the Cera doesn’t stop there. The film’s other characters seem to have caught the Cera bug, speaking in the same mildly disconnected monotone that has become Cera’s trademark, or using Cera’s all too familiar blank stare to gaze into the camera. Everyone in the movie has become Michael Cera, it’s as if they’ve all been instructed to filter their characters through some sort of strange Michael Cera impression. That might be annoying of not for Michael Cera who, is doing something distinctly un-Cera with Twisp’s imaginary friend Francois. Bug-eyed and angry, it’s Francois Dillinger, as the only non-Cera character in the film, who makes watching Youth in Revolt worthwhile…...

Let’s face the facts: if you’ve already jumped off the Michael Cera bandwagon, this movie will probably not prompt you to jump back on. However, if you’re still straddling the fence, you might be pleased to see that his character in Youth in Revolt is a natural progression for Cera. It is not a full disengagement from the characteristics that made him so endearing to begin with, but it adds a welcome new layer.
Youth in Revolt is based on the first book in a series by C.D. Payne, published in 1993. Touted as a relatable new voice for teenagers, the book’s protagonist Nick Twisp became a popular “Holden Caulfield” type for their generation.
Nick is an old soul in a teenager’s body, preferring French cinema and the crooning of Frank Sinatra to typical high school shenanigans. Consequently, he has few friends, and in lieu of any actual relationships with girls,...

As every nice guy knows, girls have an inexplicable thing for bad boys. Which is bad news for Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), who unfortunately couldn't be nicer. He's also a virgin whose knowledge of sex consists entirely of rumor. He longs to score, ideally with a girl whose tastes run to Frank Sinatra records and old Fellini movies ... or something, you know, similar.
But there's no one like that in sight, or maybe even in existence. And meanwhile, everyone around Nick seems to be scoring like mad, even his divorced parents. His mom (Jean Smart), with whom he lives, is currently filling the vacancy in her love life with...

Youth in Revolt, which is based on a novel by C.D. Payne, is a teenage rebellion film that comes across like Fight Club for young hipsters. Even though the film sometimes tries a bit too hard to be edgy, Youth in Revolt is a funny, dirty, and stylish comedy.
Michael Cera plays Nick Twist is a precocious 16 year old nerd with raging hormones and none of the moves necessary to get next to a lady. When he isn't thinking about sex or masturbating, Nick channels his remaining energy into writing, reading, listening to Frank Sinatra, and watching arthouse films. Nick's parents (Steve Buscemi and Jean Smart) are divorced, and he stays with his mother so she can continue to get child support checks. While on vacation with his mom and her boyfriend (Zach Galifanakis), Nick encounters the pretentious girl of his dreams: Shennie Sanders (Portia Doubleday). Shennie is obsessed with French culture.

While on vacation with his mom and her boyfriend (Zach Galifanakis), Nick encounters the pretentious girl of his dreams: Shennie Sanders (Portia Doubleday). Shennie is obsessed with French culture.

The first batch of 2010 releases hit theatres today, and as always, there are some questionable ones. However, it seems like both Daybreakers and Youth in Revolt have the potential to rise above the usual January dreck as early reviews have been mostly positive. Daybreakers is a sci-fi action film about a future world where vampires are running out of supplies of fresh blood (ie. humans). Youth in Revolt is a Michael Cera comedy based on the novel by C.D. Payne. Other new movies include the Amy Adams rom-com Leap Year, Tim Allen's directorial debut Crazy on the Outside, and the throwback female exploitation flick Bitch Slap, which is playing in just 3 theatres but also available on VOD. What will you be checking out this weekend? Daybreakers [1] Youth in Revolt [2] Leap Year [3] Bitch Slap [4] (limited) Crazy on the Outside [5] (limited) Waiting for Armageddon [6] (limited) Wonderful World [7] (limited) [1] http://www.imdb.

Michael Cera and Portia Doubleday in Youth in Revolt
Photo: Dimension Films Anyone that pays close attention to movies can sometimes get a sense of a film's quality based solely on its release date and how the studio handles its promotion. Typically when a film gets bumped to the dreaded first two months of any year you are either looking at an Oscar contender from the previous year expanding to additional markets or a dog of a film the studio has decided to release against a bunch of other dogs. Such informal rules are what makes Miguel Arteta's Youth in Revolt an early year breath of fresh air. I had a lot of fun throughout this entire film and when faced with the January and February doldrums this one serves as a solid option that defies the early year rule set.

Youth in Revolt, the coming-of-age comedy starring Michael Cera, was set for a 2009 release. It was delayed until January, a month that's typically studio dumping ground for movies that suck. That history suggests potential unwatchability, but based on early critic reviews, it ain't bad.
"...a cute, quaint, charming, and largely harmless little character study."
— Christopher Null, filmcritic.com
"It's a bitch telling a coming-of-age story minus clichés and sappiness. So Youth in Revolt, with Michael Cera in his best performance yet, is a small miracle."
— Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"...the movie misses the dark hilarity and herky-jerky energy of C.D. Payne's 1993 young-adult novel on which it's based; there's too little color amid all the mayhem."
— Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
"...a sweet and slight and often charming coming-of-age tale."
— Manohla Dargis, New York Times
"The cult novel must continue its search for a worthy film adaptation."
— Robert Wilonsky, Village Voice...

By now, we all get that Michael Cera was born to play the awkward and stammering virgin. And just as we grow tired of that one friend who constantly whines about not getting any, many of us have grown weary of watching Cera play the same role in every film. That being said, if you walk into Youth In Revolt expecting to see same old Cera, you will be pleasantly surprised and/or disappointed. In Youth In Revolt, Cera gets to break out of and stick to the role that has made him a household name.

Six years later, we are still feeling the heat and feeding the fire that we started with Jared Hess’ Napoleon Dynamite. While the popularity of its one-liners died out shortly after its release, the impact of Hess’ film can be felt in chintzy gifts at Urban Outfitters stores as almost a sense of déjà vu. It’s as if the aesthetic appeal of Napoleon’s non-adventure have been destroyed, vaporized and absorbed by our collective culture and subconsciously regurgitated back onto shelves.
That isn’t inherently a bad thing; it just is. And it’s noticeable. In the world of film, particularly so: the number of faux-indie flicks like Junebug and Juno can thank their lucky stars for inviting the world to embrace pastel-hued awkwardness, as can Wes Anderson’s retro stop-motion Fantastic Mr. Fox. It’s not a matter of the content or quality of these movies, but rather,...

Emmet Walsh, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Long special appearances by: Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) is a 14-year old going headstrong through puberty. Equal parts a derivation from J.D. Salinger, Daniel Clowes, François Truffaut and Wes Anderson, Nick is obsessed with girls and enjoys great literature, foreign cinema and Frank Sinatra – which means, of course, that he is still a virgin. Nick’s parents are divorced. He lives with his mother (Jean Smart) and her white trash boyfriend, Jerry (Zach Galifianakis doing what he does best). Jerry rips off some sailors – thus Jerry, Nick’s mother and Nick thrust forward into the narrative as they go on vacation (into hiding) at a Christian trailer park. This is where Nick falls instantly head-over-heels for...

Michael Cera can do no wrong. It's been said that he plays the same character in every movie. It's been said that that character is just him, that he's playing a slightly more or less heightened version of himself every time he's projected on the big screen. Well, to be honest, I don't care. He does it well. He makes me laugh. And he's the Og of hopeless, awkward, geeky romantics. And that sentiment doesn't change throughout Youth in Revolt. Though, it does evolve. Based on the novel by C.D. Payne and adapted by Gustin Nash, writer of Charlie Bartlett, Youth in Revolt follows the story of puppy love turned intense infatuation and the lengths to which Nick Twisp (Cera) will go to seal the deal. How far does he go? Far enough to create an alternate identity; one that stands in complete opposition to his play-it-safe attitude. A risk-taker.

Adapted from C.D. Payne's 1993 triptych (three installments were published in one volume), Youth in Revolt took so long to make it to the screen it's practically a period piece. And while its star, Michael Cera, could not be more of-the-moment, the casting is a perfect fit: Cera's expertise in playing the moon-faced aspirant is largely derived from the bewilderment he seems to radiate at being caught out of his time -- a diffident, longhand wisp lodged in a vulgar, thumb-typing world. As Nick Twisp, adolescent narrator and hero of his own beleaguered, lonely life, Cera pulls from his usual hoodie full of tricks, and that's just fine: Pathologically incapable of a stale moment, as far as I'm concerned Michael Cera is better at playing Michael Cera than most actors are at playing anybody else.

As a nearly 500-page-long exploration of the insatiable sexual urges of a 14-year-old, rife with explicit gay sex, drug use, cross-dressing, and an overflowing, oversized cast of zany supporting characters, C.D. Payne’s cult novel Youth In Revolt poses formidable obstacles for cinematic adaptation. So perhaps it’s no surprise that Miguel Arteta’s well-intentioned film version feels simultaneously overstuffed and undercooked. It’s a manic, sometimes lively, sometimes lumpy mess with too many characters, too many subplots, and too much random wackiness that feels less like a proper adaptation than like a Cliffs Notes version that leaps from ...

Michael Cera as his alter-ego Francois Dillinger in Youth in Revolt
Photo: Dimension Films Back on December 3, 2009 Michael Cera was making the press rounds and stopped over in sunny Seattle, Washington capping off a year in which I limited my interviews to the likes of Francis Ford Coppola for Tetro, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker and Marc Webb for 500 Days of Summer. I know, not exactly an abundance of interviews, but what can I say? I'm very picky.
However, as a fan of "Arrested Development" and the shy comedic stylings of Cera I couldn't pass up the opportunity. After all, his new film, Youth in Revolt is quite funny and well worth promoting.
Adapted from C.D. Payne's novel of the same name, Michael Cera stars in Youth in Revolt as Nick Twisp, an awkward teenager who meets the girl of his dreams played by relative newcomer Portia Doubleday.

Ralph Meeker, Dan Duryea, Vince Edwards, Steve Cochran. There's just something about the asshole.
Scratch that. That's too strong and vulgar and dismissive of a word. More like... the shit bird, the hinky hombre, the gashouse palooka, whichever old-timey slang you choose to apply. If you're upset, you're just, as Duryea spits in "The Little Foxes," "showing off your grief" (though he dares utters this to a man, which, in the rare case of the actor's screen career, causes Mr. Duryea to become the recipient of the bitch slap, rather than his usual backhand). And should you ever flag down a car in hysterical distress; the good looking stinker might not give you the comfort you require. He might just ask, à la Ralph Meeker as Mike Hammer,...

Michael Cera taps into his rebellious side in the new comedy 'Youth in Revolt,' in theaters Friday, and the "The Insider" was with the 'Superbad' star at the film's New York premiere! On the blinding paparazzi flashes of the red carpet, Michael candidly told us, "I couldn't possibly stand there any longer," asking director Miguel Arteta, "Weren't you finding it insanely disorienting? And they're also particularly mean for some reason." Based on the novel by C.D. Payne, 'Youth in Revolt' casts Michael as Nick Twisp, a smart, hormone-fueled 16-year-old who falls for intellectual trailer park vixen Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). Faced with rejection, he comes up with a bad boy alter ego named Francois to win her over. But will Francois land Nick behind bars before he can land the girl? Jean Smart, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta and Zach Galifianakis also star. "Zach's really...

If Charles Dickens had lived in the 1990s, David Copperfield might have sounded like Nick Twisp - and David Copperfield might have ended up like C.D. Payne's multi-volume novel, collected as Youth in Revolt. Indeed, Miguel Arteta's film of Youth in Revolt (opening Friday 1/8/10) has a strong Dickensian flavor to its plotting, as Nick works his way through both the twisted landscape of suburban Oakland, Calif., and the crowded byways of his own psyche. As played by Michael Cera, Nick is a kid who lives in his own head, particularly when it comes to dealing with the opposite sex. Like many teen protagonists, he has an uncomfortable relationship with his own virginity, i.e., he's eager to lose its acquaintance. But his colorful family life serves as an impediment for Nick in his efforts to fulfill his quest. His mother (Jean Smart) has...

Michael Cera's funny, sweet new comedy Youth in Revolt represents a curious turn for the 21-year-old actor, whose critics most often accuse him of playing variations of himself in all his geeky, ironic glory. Revolt seems to agree in part, casting Cera as Nick Twisp, a lovesick (and more than mildly horny) teen in pursuit of his elusive dream girl Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). Yet director Miguel Arteta's film also implodes expectations by featuring Cera as Nick's alter ego Francois Dillinger, a thin-mustached, chain-smoking creature of unspeakable wickedness and carnality who urges Nick to upend his life in a plot to win Sheeni's heart.
The two go at it credibly and often hilariously, heightening the dramatic stakes -- and adding, according to Cera, an unintentional twist -- of the story found in C.D. Payne's beloved source novel. The actor spoke to Movieline about nailing his adaptation, acting against himself,...

As hard as it is developing and adapting a cult novel to the big screen, director Miguel Arteta at least had a great partner in actor Michael Cera when he decided to take on C.D. Payne's Youth in Revolt (subtitled: "The Journals of Nick Twist"). If you haven't figured it out, the young star of Superbad and Juno plays Twisp, an intelligent but awkward virgin who falls in love with Portia Doubleday's Sheeni Saunders while on a family vacation, and proceeds to succumb to her bad influence, as she manipulates him into doing worse and worse deeds in order to win her heart. It's a very funny and quirky comedy that plays up to Cera's strengths but also offers more than a few surprises, like the evil alter-ego Nick develops who is very different than the characters we...

When I was a young lad my best friend, frustrated in love, would complain to me: "Hey, Harvey, how come the great-looking girls looked right past nice guys like me and always go for the bad guys-the black leather-jacket crowd with duck's-ass hair styles that work in gas stations and auto repair shops and act like they don't give much of a damn about them?" I answered with what was a cliché, even in my own youth: "Don't worry. They look to guys like us to marry because they know we're nice and would make great fathers. Sooner or later, they'll come around."

Oh my god, it’s Nice Guy(Tm): The Movie! Everyone knows girls only like jerks, so wimpy, doormatish, insecure Nice Guy transforms himself into a deranged, criminal asshole in order to get the girl... and it works! Ah fuck. Really, guys? (Because of course this movie is exclusively the creation of guys: director Miguel Arteta, screenwriter Gustin Nash, based on books by C.D. Payne.) Aren’t you tired of hearing yourselves bitch about how girls don’t like you because you’re too nice and polite and kind? When will you realize that you’re the problem, that girls just don’t like with no personality, no thoughts of their own, and no backbone? (See HeartlessBitches.com for a more complete feminist rant against the “nice guy.”)...

Dimension Films has shared another sneak peek at "Youth in Revolt" by releasing an age-restricted trailer. Though there are not many raunchy actions, there are quite a lot of R-rated jokes in the clip. The snippet, additionally, gives a look at the silly things done by Nicholas "Nick" Twisp to win the heart of a girl.
Nick is a high school student who goes on a quest to lose his virginity after his parents' break-up. When meeting Sheeni Saunders on a family vacation, he is attracted to her. Unfortunately, Sheeni doesn't see him as a boyfriend material. Unwilling to give up easily, Nick creates a "supplementary persona" named Francois Dillinger in an attempt to win her heart and gain a sexual relationship with her. While he is working hard to impress her, Sheeni does almost everything under the sun to make his attempts fail.

As studios are wont to do when they blow the trailer load too early in the game, Dimension Films has seen fit to follow up its first two trailers with a Red Band version, so that we might all revel in a little profanity. It's funny because your mother might tsk tsk.
That said: I want to like this movie. I love coming-of-age films more than anything in the whole world that doesn't start with a P end with an O and play risc in between. By all accounts, C.D. Payne's Nick Twisp novels are great source material, too. Director Miguel Arteta is unknown, but promising, and screenwriter Gustin Nash (dude, buy a "D") wrote the wonderful but overlooked Charlie Bartlett.
So what's the problem? You people are the fucking problem. The Pajiba fucking readership, who have planted this "Michael Cera blows green chicken peen" seed into my head.

The first trailer for Youth in Revolt, the Michael Cera-led comedy about a young man who invents an alternate persona in order to be 'bad enough' for the girl of his dreams, fell short by a measure or two. In this writer's opinion, it gave away far too much of the film's plot without being entertaining. This redband trailer, which debuted over at Funny or Die, is much better. It still gives away too much of the film, but at least it gets some laughs with various absurdly crass moments. Directed by Miguel Artera and based on a novel from C.D. Payne, Youth also stars Portia Doubleday, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Justin Long, Rooney Mara, Zach Galifianakis and Fred Willard. Having seen it at the Austin Film Festival, I can tell you that it's definitely worth seeing when it hits theaters on January 8, 2010.
