Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock has claimed Danny Boyle should be “frightened to see” him following Pistol.
The musician has expressed his disapproval of the series based on the band’s rise to prominence, which was released in 2022.
Matlock appeared as a character played by Christian Lees in the Craig Pearce-created series, which was directed by Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker Boyle.
“I’m not happy with it,” Matlock told Metro.co.uk. “I didn’t like the way I was portrayed – nothing to do with the actor but the script. It makes me look a bit wet.
“It comes across as a quasi-documentary but there are so many things that are wrong.”
Matlock said that Boyle “knows exactly what I think” after he ran into Boyle at a red carpet event held for the show alongside bandmate Steve Jones.

To call Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis “detailed” is an understatement. The Warner Bros. musical biopic, which stars Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, tracks Presley’s life and career from his beginnings as an average boy from Tupelo, Mississippi, with a beautiful voice and great looks to one of the most important figures in American pop culture history.
Like Luhrmann’s previous films, including the best picture-nominated musical Moulin Rouge!, Elvis is an epic, kaleidoscopic project and a tribute to the title character’s legacy, told primarily from the perspective of his infamous manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). It’s also a mashup of cultural references, from Elvis’ own music to contemporary songs by the likes of Doja Cat, Presley’s various performance eras and his fabulous — if fatal — excess once he became one of the most famous men in the world.

After landing the coveted title role in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama Elvis, Austin Butler barely slept for two years.

Director Baz Luhrmann first made his mark on the film world with the delightful 1992 musical “Strictly Ballroom,” but 1996 was when audiences got a taste for the full array of his boundless cinematic enthusiasms. Unleashed by the resources and scale afforded by a Hollywood studio, “Romeo + Juliet” would set the template for the director’s maximalist aesthetic, bringing together Shakespeare, music videos, Hong Kong action flicks, and Westerns. In the same way he later brought 1800s French can-can into the MTV era with “Moulin Rouge,” these seemingly disparate ingredients coalesced in Luhrmann’s head — where the lines between high and low culture, classic and contemporary art, history and fantasy, do not exist.
The key to Luhrmann’s sustained success across three decades — in which he is one of the last auteurs whose recognizable brand of cinema remains bankable — is a partner, both in life and work, who can extract a...

It would seem Austin Butler has used witchcraft to summon the very soul of Elvis to possess him in this larger than life biopic.
Biopics have been on our screen as long as the big screen has been around. From films like Joan of Arc (1900), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Amadeus (1984), to the modern burst of musical biopics like Ray (2004), Walk the Line (2005), and Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). The biopic seems to never go away and you can always expect them to be coming around near awards season, normally picking up a few acting awards. They never seem to stick around long in the audience’s conscious, yet they keep getting made,...

Chicago – Director Baz Luhrman’s “Elvis” has plenty of suspicious minds, but precious little mystery as his trademark excess fails to breathe new life into the tired legacy of the King. No amount of montages, quick cuts, and odd music choices can obscure the fact that we don’t see anything here that even the casual Elvis fan doesn’t already know.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The film tells the story of the rise and fall of Elvis (Austin Butler) through the eyes of his personal Svengali, manager, and exploiter-in-chief Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Hanks plays Parker as a grotesque force of evil who is so slimy and menacing he’s practically a Bond villain. His inscrutable accent comes and goes. He’s cagey about his background. He shouts his unscrupulous ways from the mountaintops, and brags liberally about the “snow jobs” he pulls on everyone in sight.
“Elvis” opens in theaters everywhere on June 25th.

In the pantheon of great biographical film epics, the new offering from director Baz Luhrmann chronicling the life and rise to superstardom of a young man from Tupelo, Mississippi named Elvis Aaron Presley (as played by Austin Butler), simply titled Elvis, may rank up amongst the greatest ever made for now, and possibly for some time to come.
What is refreshing about Luhrmann’s film is that in portraying the complicated relationship that Presley had with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) as told through the eyes of said manager, the film refrains from becoming a sad tale of the decline of a once great artist, but is instead a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions that properly treats Elvis as the tragic, yet enigmatic hero that he was. When actual footage of Elvis is used to close the film, it serves less as a shocking moment of the man’s deteriorating health,...

Director Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic “Elvis” dazzled at Cannes Film Festival, earning a 12-minute standing ovation. Will audiences respond with the same, sustained enthusiasm?
According to early estimates, the Warner Bros. film is aiming to collect 30 million from 3,900 venues in its domestic box office debut over the weekend. That’s a solid start for a drama catering to adult audiences. But given the film’s 85 million production budget, which does not include the many millions spent on promoting the movie, “Elvis” will have to keep singing in theaters throughout the summer to justify its price tag.
Despite two buzzy new releases — “Elvis,” as well as Universal and Blumhouse’s creepy thriller “The Black Phone” — there’s a chance “Top Gun: Maverick” overtakes them both and returns to No. 1 on box office charts in its fifth weekend of release. Should that come true, it would be a remarkable accomplishment at...

“I was actually a punk myself at the time, so I could really relate totally to the whole period,” reveals production designer Kave Quinn about designing with authenticity on the FX limited series “Pistol.” For our recent Q&A, Quinn adds “the whole look of it is based on that kind of very decayed look that London had at that time.” We talked with Quinn as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022 Emmy Awards contenders. Early in Pistol, the FX-produced six-part miniseries about the thrilling rise and ugly fall of seminal English punk act the Sex Pistols, the band and their friends gather in their makeshift rehearsal space for a raucous party. Grandiose manager Malcolm McLaren (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) proclaims to guitar player Steve Jones (Toby Wallace) that they are witnessing the birth of a new movement. A skeptical Jones, noting that the revelers are belting out the innocuous pop hit “Shang-a-Lang,” wonders if a rebellion can be accompanied by a Bay City Rollers soundtrack.

It’s hard to imagine a richer subject for a music biopic than the raucous, rebellious 1975–78 ride of the Sex Pistols. Craig Pearce, who created Pistol, a six-episode FX on Hulu saga of British punk’s Godfathers, knew he’d need to capture the tale of Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones, and Paul Cook after listening to Pistols guitarist Jones reading his 2016 autobiography, Lonely Boy. “One phrase from the book that stuck with me was ‘The music always saved me; I’d be dead now without music,’” Pearce recalls. The series also captures the destitute conditions in England that birthed the band. “Young people felt they had no future,” Pearce says. Music gave the band—and their fans—a purpose: “It was a fertile time for something to explode.” Pistol also stars Christian Lees, Sydney Chandler, Talulah Riley, Maisie Williams, Emma Appleton, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. There are few things that rock biopics love more than characters who act as if they know they’re in a rock biopic. There’s some unspoken need for conversations drenched with the importance of the music and changing the world and making something real, delivered with the absolute certainty that these ragtag group of upstarts are on a road to generation-altering fame.
The best you can say for “Pistol,” the new six-part limited series about the rise of the Sex Pistols against the backdrop of the burgeoning English punk scene, is that creator Craig Pearce and director Danny Boyle have a clear and deep love for the band they’re bringing to life. But as is the case for watching characters gush over shared love of David Bowie or prophesy about the effect their art will have on a culture yet to come, so much of “Pistol” feels like...

When Maisie Williams was first offered “Pistol” — the FX limited series created by Craig Pearce and directed by Danny Boyle, about punk rock band the Sex Pistols for FX — she knew little about the band or the world of 1970s counterculture London that surrounded them. But the “Game of Thrones” star was instantly drawn to the role of Jordan (aka Pamela Rooke), whose provocative makeup and fashion made her a model and muse for Vivienne Westwood — and helped to catalyze the punk movement. “Pistol” premieres May 31 on Hulu.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
The biopic starring Austin Butler in the title role will open domestically on June 24.
Luhrmann hasn’t made a film since 2013’s lavish “The Great Gatsby,” which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, and grossed over $350 million worldwide. While not exactly prolific, Luhrmann’s work is certainly distinct, and fans are curious to see the “Moulin Rouge!” director’s take on this American music icon.
Luhrmann co-wrote the screenplay for “Elvis” with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner. The ensemble cast includes Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Yola Quartey as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. There’s no future in England’s dreaming but despite this FX is setting its Sex Pistol drama series for May.
FX boss John Landgraf revealed that the Pistol premiere date during his virtual TCA exec session.

Elvis has entered the building. The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic starring Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was released Thursday, and the resemblance is uncanny. The trailer also confirmed that the previously untitled Warner Bros. film will be called “Elvis.”
The film explores two decades in the life of superstar Elvis Presley before his early death in 1977 at the age of 42, focusing on his complex relationship with manager Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The film follows his rise to fame from poverty and features an all-star cast including Olivia DeJonge (“The Visit”) as Elvis’ wife Priscilla, singer-songwriter Yola as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) as Jimmie Rodgers, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) as B.B. King, Luke Bracey (“Little Fires Everywhere”) as Jerry Schilling and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Presley’s mother,...

Fans of music biopics have a lot to look forward to right now. Timothée Chalamet is playing Bob Dylan in “Going Electric,” from “Walk the Line” director James Mangold. Bradley Cooper is directing and starring in “Maestro,” his take on Leonard Bernstein. And “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green is set to helm a Bob Marley biopic starring Kingsley Ben-Adir. But one of the most anticipated music films is “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film about the legendary Elvis Presley.
The idea of the flashy Australian director with a penchant for films about music taking on the showmanship-loving singer seemed like a match made in heaven for many film fans when the project was first announced in 2014. The role of Elvis Presley — which has been played in other projects by everyone from Michael Shannon to Jonathan Rhys-Meyers — was extremely coveted, with the likes of Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, and Harry Styles vying for the part.
