If family animation often struggles to earn respect in the film industry, and screenwriters often struggle to get respect in film’s creative hierarchy, then where does that leave a screenwriter who specializes in family animation? In the case of Brian Lynch, the answer is this: thriving, and contributing to films that have accumulated more than a billion dollars at the box office.
Over the past decade, Lynch has become a go-to screenwriter for a slew of Illumination’s biggest animated kidpics, from “Hop” to “Minions” (follow-up “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is on tap for 2020) to “The Secret Life of Pets,” with “The Secret Life of Pets 2″ having topped last weekend’s box office. But Lynch’s evolution into an all-around children’s scribe wasn’t something he could have predicted.
“Other than the Muppets, I really didn’t watch many kids’ movies as a child,” Lynch says.

With Christmas now only a week away, there’s a big day of genre-related home entertainment releases to look forward to in the meantime, just in case you were in need of some last-minute gift ideas (or if you were looking to spoil yourself, which is totally cool). Easily my most anticipated Blu-ray release for all of 2017, Synapse Films' stunning 4K restoration of Suspiria gets the royal treatment via an incredible three-disc limited edition Steelbook set this Tuesday, and Severin Films is also keeping busy with their HD upgrade of The Amicus Collection, which includes Asylum, And Now The Screaming Starts, and The Beast Must Die.
Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 19th include American Gothic, Leatherface, mother!, and the limited edition Steelbook for Donnie Darko.
American Gothic (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
A new tale of terror from the director of The Legend of Hell House and The Incubus.

*Updated with the reported release date* "Do you know anything about witches?" Having been shaken to my core by the Goblin score while watching the 4K restoration of Suspiria at this year's Flashback Weekend in Chicago, I highly recommend you seek out the remastered screening if it plays anywhere near you (or several states away—it's that good). If you can't make it to one of the screenings, though, it's coming out on a collectible SteelBook Blu-ray from Synapse Films, and DiabolikDVD.com has revealed the official release date.
According to multiple sources, including DiabolikDVD, the Suspiria Blu-ray SteelBook is slated for a December 19th release from Synapse Films. We have a look at the previously announced special features below, and keep an eye on DiabolikDVD, Amazon, and Synapse Films' official website for more information. In case you missed it, check out Heather Wixson's review of the dazzling 4K restoration.

Well, genre fans, November 15th is a rather quiet week on the home entertainment front, as there are only a few releases coming our way this Tuesday. Scream Factory has put together a stellar Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers, and Synapse Films is releasing their Collector's Edition steelbook of Dario Argento's Phenomena.
The sixth season of Game of Thrones makes its way home this week, too, and Star Wars fans can finally enjoy The Force Awakens in 3D from the comfort of their couches with a brand new set that arrives on Tuesday.
Dead Ringers: Collector’s Edition (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
Claire Niveau (Genevieve Bujold) is in love with handsome Beverly. Or does she love Elliot? It’s uncertain because brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle are identical twins sharing the same medical practice, apartment and women: including unsuspecting Claire.

When given the chance, most sane people flee the colder areas of the country in favor of tropical locations in January. However, movie fans turn away from the dreadful selection of films in the marketplace and focus their attention to Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival. While our elite writers are checking out the many films at Sundance, it’s time for another commentary on a film’s commentary. The choice this week is Kevin Smith’s breakthrough picture Clerks. Clerks wasn’t discovered at Sundance, but it was a breakout hit at the festival in 1994. This week, let’s forget about the Red State auction shenanigans, feuds with Southwest Air, and various Twitter explosions. We can turn back the clock to 1995 when Smith sat down with his cohorts to record the commentary to what is possibly his best-known film. For fans of the film, and Smith’s career, much...

The 26th-29th April sees the Sundance London Film and Music festival hit the O2 Arena, which sees the festival – renowned for its programme of independent film – take place in the UK for the first time in its 34-year history.
As a Sundance newbie, I am excited to attend the indie festival. I’ve always heard so many great things about it, especially as a lot of great films initially got noticed at previous Sundance fests (Napoleon Dynamite, Clerks, Reservoir Dogs).
Looking at the line-up, I expect the cream of the crop of forthcoming independent releases.
Here are the following that I’m keeping my eye on during the festival:
For Ellen

Even though I was a child of the 80′s and saw most horror films via good ol’ VHS in the 8 plus years I rented from my local video store, some horror films passed by me. Sometimes it was because the title or the cover never interested me. Scott Spiegel‘s Intruder was a film that got knocked on both merits. The cover of the VHS looked like it was an alien film and the name of the film didn’t help prove me wrong. Even though it had “From the creators of Evil Dead II” on it, I just never gave it a chance.
Lucky for me some of these films are hitting DVD & Blu-Ray in restored versions. Synapse Films brings Intruder home in a Director’s Cut. The film was heavily cut during its VHS run via Paramount and after seeing the film, I’m kind of glad...

Erie, Pa. -- Economic protesters were sidelined in downtown Erie last weekend, when ghosts and ghouls occupied the city's famed Warner Theatre. No, there was no zombie outbreak -- at least not this time around -- but a celebration of all things frightful by like-minded fans at the 8th annual Eerie Horror Film Festival.
The four-day festival and expo featured dozens of films, screenings, celebrity appearances and a variety of booths selling books, posters, clothing and collectibles.
Two of the big draws to this year's festival were guest appearances by Alexander Vincent and Norman Reedus.
Vincent was 6 years old in 1988 when he played the role of Andy Barclay in the 1988 horror film "Child's Play." He also starred in the 1990 sequel, "Child’s Play 2." Vincent, now 30, said he was not traumatized by starring in the films opposite "Chucky," a doll possessed by the soul of a mass murderer.

As a teenager back in the UK I can honestly say that Intruder was one of my favorite horror flicks. I was hooked after seeing it splattered across the cover of Gorezone (#6 I believe). It was released there on vhs with Uncut Version emblazoned across the cover art, which I believe was a mistake as it was to be released with a couple of minutes chopped off.

Sam Raimi (director of The Evil Dead and Spider-man trilogies) and Renée Estevez star in this blood-drenched cult film classic that critics call “a gorgeous low-budget shocker that has long been one of the best kept secrets of the genre scene” (Alan Simpson, Sex Gore Mutants). Let’s face it… Special Makeup FX are the backbone of the horror genre. As engaging as storylines can be, as believable as acting is, and as competent as directing and cinematography are, fans pay money and put their asses in those seats or buy those DVDs and Blu-rays because they love the creatures.
Back in the 1980s FX artists were like rock stars. Names like Savini, Bottin, and Baker were spoken in revered tones. People went to see films because of who was doing the FX.
