AMC Networks has bought for its streaming service Acorn TV, the U.S., U.K. and Canadian rights to the six-part Swedish series “Bäckström,” produced by the Scandi powerhouse Yellow Bird. The deal was brokered by global distributor Banijay Rights.

“I don’t see the worst in everyone. I see the everyone in everyone.”
For Detective Lt. Everett Backstrom, that’s all the justification he needs to act the way he does — that is, crass, blunt and totally rude.

Imitation is the sincerest form of television, and the biggest hits will be imitated over and over and over again — sometime well after they've gone off the air. "House" was one of the defining hits of the last decade on Fox, and it inspired clones in various traditional TV fields, with lawyers (James Woods in "Shark"), and even other doctors (Stanley Tucci in "3 Lbs") playing the part of the misanthropic, sarcastic rule-breaker who's too good at the job to fire. Fox's "Bones" has never exactly been a "House" clone — Temperance insults people not because she's a jerk, but because (it's implied) she has Asperger's — but it debuted in the wake of "House" and was tagged early on as "House, FBI." Now, though, longtime "Bones" showrunner Hart Hanson has a new series — "Backstrom," which debuts tonight at 9 on Fox — that's impossible to view as anything but "House, P.D.," even though...

Since starring as Dwight K. Shrute on nine seasons of The Office, Rainn Wilson has been keeping himself busy with his incredibly popular website and intellectual project, Soul Pancake. This fall, however, the former Assistant to the Regional Manager will be headed back to television, in a crime procedural titled Backstrom.
This week, EW released the first official cast photo for the series, which quite frankly, looks like every other crime procedural cast photo in television history. The show’s description, however, is more intriguing.
Backstrom comes to us from Bones creator Hart Hanson, and is described as a “subversive and comic crime procedural,” which has a 13-episode order from Fox. It tells the story of Everett Backstrom (Wilson), a brilliant Portland detective with anger issues, who returns to the job five years after being exiled for his often offensive behavior. The overweight, irascible detective then tries and fails to change his self-destructive behavior.

A year removed from his iconically weird role as Dwight Kurt Schrute III on NBC’s The Office, 47 year old Rainn Wilson is returning to network television in 2014, starring in the off-kilter crime drama, Backstrom. Fox jumped on the series, originally developed for CBS by Bones creator Hart Hanson and for a time in pilot limbo, ordering 13 episodes of the show based on Swedish novelist Leif G.W. Persson’s series of books featuring the prickly, self-destructive detective. Wilson’s bread and butter continues to be turns as exceedingly odd fellows with big personalities, and his portrayal of Detective Everett Backstrom continues this career theme, with Wilson describing his character as “a delightfully disheveled misanthrope with a twisted, brilliant mind and a heart of barbed wire.” Sounds like good times. Check out the video below for a taste of what to expect from Wilson and company.

If you’ve been missing your weekly fix of Rainn Wilson ever since the conclusion of NBC’s immensely popular The Office last May, Fox has got you covered. The network just picked up thirteen episodes of Backstrom, a one-hour drama from Bones creator Hart Hanson and 20th Century Fox TV, which will star Wilson as the offensive, hot-tempered Det. Everett Backstrom, whose increasingly self-destructive decisions begin to interfere with his career as he leads the Serious Crimes Unit through Portland’s most sensitive cases.
Backstrom may be a drastic departure from the egomaniacal wackiness of Wilson’s Office character Dwight Schrute, but Fox is optimistic that audiences will connect with the character. Kevin Reilly, Fox Chairman of Entertainment, said the following in a statement:
Hart Hanson and Rainn Wilson are the perfect combination of creative vision and on-screen talent to bring this one-of-a-kind character and story like Backstrom to Fox.

But it was not meant to be - and NBC's loss will now be CBS' gain.

Here is an anecdote a producer shared with me during the pitch portion of this development season. He’d taken a writer to a network meeting. The writer poured his heart out pitching a show based on his life, but the network executive appeared uninterested, barely paying attention. As they were heading out, the producer mentioned he also had the rights to a book. Upon hearing the title, the executive’s eyes immediately lit up. “I’ll buy that show,” the exec exclaimed before even hearing what the book was about. This has been the case over and over this season, with the networks going hard and heavy after book adaptations and remakes of TV shows and movies, betting on underlying material as well as the familiar or catchy titles that come with it. CBS has given the long-rumored pilot order to Beverly Hills Cop. The network also has ordered to pilot drama Backstrom, from Bones creator/executive producer Hart Hanson, and comedy Friends With Better Lives, from writer Dana Klein and producer Aaron Kaplan. Beverly Hills Cop, which had a pilot production commitment and had already cast Brandon T. Jackson as the lead, is a continuation of the movie franchise centered around Axel Foley’s police officer son, played by Jackson, who takes down the criminal elements of the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. The films’ star Eddie Murphy is set to appear in the pilot and will executive produce with Shawn Ryan, who wrote the script, as well as Ryan’s producing partner Marney Hochman. Backstrom, based on the Backstrom books by renowned Swedish criminologist and novelist Leif G.W. Persson, also had a pilot production commitment. Persson’s book series centers on Evert Backstrom.

Check your tailpipe for bananas now, because CBS on Tuesday ordered a pilot for Shawn Ryan’s Beverly Hills Cop. The network also greenlit a drama pilot from Bones boss Hart Hanson and a sitcom from a Friends producer.
As well-reported last year, the small-screen Beverly Hills Cop stars Brandon T. Jackson as Axel Foley’s police officer son Aaron, who like his dad finds himself walking the Beverly Hills beat. Ryan (The Shield) will pen the pilot, with Marney Hochman as a second Ep.

Exclusive: Bones creator/showrunner Hart Hanson is staying on the crime beat with another hourlong project based on the work of a real-life crime expert. CBS has bought Backstrom, a drama based on the Backstrom books by renowned Swedish criminologist and novelist Leif G.W. Persson, with a pilot production commitment — the biggest commitment for a pitch so far this season. (CBS also recently took an early jump on pilot orders with an off-cycle pickup of the Rob Greenberg comedy Ex-Men.) Person’s book series centers on Evert Backstrom. Sometimes described as a detective version of Dr. Gregory House, he is an overweight, offensive, irascible detective as he tries and fails to change his self-destructive behavior. Hanson will write the script and executive produce the project with Persson and his Scandinavian literary agent Niclas Salomonsson. CBS has long had an eye on the books, which observers say are well-suited for a CBS procedural.

He has been described as a detective version of Dr. Gregory House. Now Evert Backstrom is heading to the same network that houses the brilliant but flawed doctor. After a heated bidding, Fox has landed the TV series adaptation of the Backstrom books by renowned Swedish criminologist and novelist Leif G.W. Persson with a big put pilot commitment. I hear every network went after the project, produced by 20th Century Fox TV. The studio won the rights to the books in a bidding war earlier this month for Gaghan, who is under an overall deal at the studio. The project is based on the central character in Persson’s books, homicide detective Evert Backstrom. An equal-opportunity misanthrope, Backstrom is always miserable, and only a good murder case can cheer him up. Persson and his literary agent Niclas Salomonsson serve as executive producers alongside Gaghan. This is Gaghan’s second TV series project.

"Traffic" screenwriter Stephen Gaghan has been hired to turn some of Leif G.W. Persson's Swedish novels into a hour-long drama which Fox will develop and premiere next year reports The Live Feed.
Persson, a former professor of criminology, has penned two books - 2005’s Linda and 2008’s He Who Kills the Dragon - and is working on a third about the character of Evert Backstrom, a "cynical, racist, sexist and homophobic cop with a drinking problem who is disliked by many of his colleagues".
The project joins a growing trend of Scandanavian crime thrillers getting U.S. and/or U.K. produced adaptations such as Sony's upcoming "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", the BBC's Kenneth Branagh-led adaptations of the "Wallander" books, and AMC's remake of "The Killing".
