Exclusive: In this Deadline exclusive, Es Devlin, whose magnificent set for director Sam Mendes’ The Lehman Trilogy is nominated for a Tony Award, presents a series of sketches and photographs that provide insight into the development of what would become one of the Broadway season’s most stunning experiences. From Mendes’ simple handwritten list of guiding principles to early sketches and subsequent photos, the gallery offers insight into a singular vision.
For each image, Devlin provides a caption that offers background — including an early idea, later discarded, that would have featured a tightrope walker high above the audience. “We are all walkers on the precarious tightrope of ever more complex human systems,” she writes.
In a neat summing-up of the visual power in Devlin’s set, the design magazine Wallpaper, writing shortly after the play opened on the West End in 2018, said,

“The Lehman Trilogy” has had a protracted journey to Broadway. Not quite as long as the nearly two centuries of history that the play chronicles, of course, but what began in London in 2018 and made a splash Off-Broadway in 2019 has finally arrived at the Nederlander Theatre, opening on Oct. 14. Ben Power’s adaptation of Stefano Massini’s play originally began previews on March 7, 2020, but played less than one week before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered theaters.
Beginning in 1844 when the first of the three Lehman brothers arrived in New York from Bavaria, “The Lehman Trilogy” chronicles this notorious family’s insatiable quest for wealth and capital accumulation through the 2008 stock market crash that toppled the firm. Tony-winner Sam Mendes directs a cast of three actors – Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley, and Adrian Lester – who play the innumerable characters needed to tell the tale of generations of Lehmans and centuries of global capitalism.

Love her, loathe her, you cannot ignore her -- certainly not on Twitter. The micro-blogging site has banned Kangana Ranaut's account, taken down her tweets, and reactionary meme fests never cease to overflow social media, but she goes on unfazed.

From nepotism to CAA and farm laws to onslaughts on Twitter itself, and from comparing herself to Meryl Streep to declaring she is the greatest actress in the world, Kangana goes for the jugular with whatever she takes on. By turns outrageous, melodramatic, irreverent and almost always controversial, the one thing about Kangana's tweets that stays a constant is they never fail to amuse.

In Nick Powell’s Primal, the always entertaining Nicolas Cage stars as Frank Walsh, the movie's ultimate antihero who served in the military and worked at several zoos before becoming a professional hunter. After spending some time in a Brazilian rainforest, Frank thinks he has finally “hit the motherload” because he managed to capture an extremely rare and valuable female white jaguar that should turn him into a rich man. However, once Frank is ready to travel by ship with the white jaguar and several other animals –including a group of monkeys that will get violent if they feel threatened and a couple of venomous snakes– his plan gets completely altered. Some representatives of the U.S. government, including a Navy doctor (Famke Janssen), an attorney who...

“Primal” begins the way that every movie should begin: With a bearded Nicolas Cage sitting in a tree somewhere deep in the Brazilian jungle while smoking a cigar, reading “Real Estate” magazine, and waiting for a rare white jaguar known as “El Fantasma Gato” (“The Ghost Cat”) to emerge from the trees and eat the goat carcass that’s strung up on the ground below. Sadly — if inevitably — this schlocky genre mishmash is all downhill from there, as
The best thing that “Primal” has going for it (beyond its truly incredible poster) is a premise that harkens back to the glory days of dopey ’90s action films — a beautiful time when B-movie directors were high out of their minds on the promise of CGI, and used such digital tools to add new dimensions to otherwise staid ideas. "I'm going hunting!" Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an indie action thriller titled Primal, the latest film directed by a stunt coordinator named Nick Powell. This has a plot straight out of the 90s with one of these eye-rolling concepts. A big-game hunter for zoos has booked passage on a shipping freighter with a fresh haul of exotic & deadly animals from the Amazon, including a rare white Jaguar - along with a political assassin being extradited to the Us in secret. Two days into the journey, the assassin escapes and releases the captive animals, throwing the ship into chaos. So Nicolas Cage has to hunt and stop both the jaguar and the assassin. Also starring Famke Janssen, Kevin Durand, Michael Imperioli, Lamonica Garrett, Rey Hernandez, Tom Walker, and John Lewis. This looks so incredibly dumb. I cannot even believe it exists - feels like it came through some...

The widely expected engagement of the acclaimed production was announced today by producers The National Theatre, Neal Street Productions, and Scott Rudin/Barry Diller/David Geffen.
Written by Italian playwright Stefano Massini and adapted into English by Ben Power, The Lehman Trilogy will play a strictly limited 16-week engagement featuring original cast of Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles. The sold-out West End production scored five Olivier Award nominations.

Predicting the outcome of the design categories at the Tony Awards proves a challenge every year. The choreographed chaos of Jez Butterworth’s jaw-dropping play The Ferryman certainly earns the critical attention that’s been heaped on it. With 21 people in the cast — and a live goose and rabbit — the play about an extended family in 1980s Northern Ireland leaves audiences reeling after a suspenseful three-plus hours. Part of that is due to the savvy narrative structure that defies dramatic rules and should be impossible to pull off. In Judaism, death is followed by the sitting of shiva. For seven days, seated mourners reflect on their loss. The ritual recurs throughout “The Lehman Trilogy,” playwright Steffano Massino’s sweeping history of Lehman Brothers, the small family firm that became one of the world’s biggest banks, up until the financial crash of 2008. Each time a Lehman passes away, the clan gather in remembrance to recite the Kaddish. “The Lehman Trilogy,” directed at the National Theatre by Sam Mendes, marks the company’s collapse in a similar way — we sit and reflect on its rise and demise. It is, in the end, a parable for our times.
Massino’s script is a classy affair, storytelling that’s at once sumptuous and spare. Three actors play three generations of Lehmans: the trio of German Jewish immigrant brothers who founded a fabric shop in Montgomery, Alabama; the two sons who inherited...

Hurricanes be damned. Film production is surging in the Caribbean and Central America despite natural – and some political – turmoil.
“The region’s film industry indeed feels more effervescent,” said Iff Panama artistic director Diana Sanchez.
Puerto Rico was the hardest hit by Hurricane Maria last September but that didn’t stop some projects from resuming production about a month later. First among them was Nick Hamm’s 1970s-set thriller “Driven,” starring Jason Sudeikis, Lee Pace and Corey Stoll, about auto maverick John DeLorean and the FBI drug sting operation that sought to take down the exec.
Co-produced by seasoned Puerto Rican producer Luillo Ruiz of the Pimienta Film Co., it took a good dose of creativity and vital connections to overcome myriad logistical issues. Just getting diesel, food and water was a challenge. With cell towers down, crew members were visited personally at their homes to get them back on board.

Nicolas Cage will rage as a big game hunter stuck on a ship with his prey in action film Primal.
Snakes on a plane? How about Cage on a rage….on a boat? Okay, admittedly not as catchy, but I’m sure some marketing executive is already hard at work on a memorable tagline for Nicolas Cage’s new film, Primal.
In Primal, Cage will play a big-game hunter working on behalf of a zoo. He must survive on a Greek freightliner after his haul of dangerous, exotic wild animals is set free by an escaped political assassin, aboard the ship to be extradited to the U.S. The animals, including a rare White Panther, wreak havoc, chaos ensues.
Picturing Nic Cage deliver animal-based puns while putting down attacking jungle beasts sounds like the best/worst movie ever. We couldn’t be more excited. Nick Powell, a...

Veteran UK filmmaker Ken Loach delivered an impassioned keynote on the subject of European solidarity and Brexit after the European Film Academy’s general assembly on Saturday morning (10 Dec) in Wroclaw.
Voicing similar sentiments to those expressed during a speech given before the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education in October, Loach asked: ¨Is it true that the European Union doesn’t stand for the interests of the people, but for the interests of big corporations, that it has been a central contributing factor to the British leaving and to the problems we see around us…or is [the EU] a benign organisation which will work for the benefit of the people - or is it working against the interests of the people?¨
