Consider what we know about Garfield the cat: He’s orange, a little plump, he loves lasagna, he hates Mondays, and — ah, well, that’s about it. Enough information to fill about four comic strip panels, wouldn’t you say? And yet, somehow, this lazy kitty and his very mild exploits have inspired three television series (with one more on the way), a dozen prime-time specials, and three feature-length films.
While previous cinematic iterations of Garfield’s story have stretched his adventures to wacky ends — the 2004 “Garfield: The Movie” essentially acted as an origin story, while its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties” put a “Prince and the Pauper”-ish twist on his life — the latest in a long, looooooong line of Garfield adaptations goes in the opposite direction. There’s something strange about the franchise reboot of the big orange tabby in The Garfield Movie. For one, the story completely sidelines the relationship between Jon Arbuckle and Garfield. Another issue is that all the characters are cardboard cutouts, and you know virtually nothing about them besides how Garfield came into Jon’s possession.
Perhaps most importantly, the trademark apathetic nature of the main character is non-existent. It’s as if the studios bought the brand name and turned the character into a clone of any fish-out-of-water animation adventure. That’s what’s wrong with The Garfield Movie. What makes the character great is washed away for a run-of-the-mill animated family film that you’ve seen nine lives over.
It’s purr-fectly predictable from start to its stagnant finish.

The lasagna-obsessed feline with a near-pathological aversion to Mondays, who first came into popular consciousness in the late ‘70s as a comic strip, is a diluted version of himself in “The Garfield Movie.” Not only is his suave apathy mostly replaced by an excessive excitedness with only sporadic glimpses of his endearingly negative qualities, but this Garfield jumps off trains, stages a heist, and is subjected to trite physical comedy by way of numerous predictable action sequences. The ordeal mimics a rehashed plot from the dull “The Secret Life of Pets” franchise with Garfield forcefully plugged in.
All of these choices amount to a production that fundamentally misunderstands Garfield’s appeal as a lovingly indifferent, self-centered glutton whose greatest aspiration is to do nothing and have all his needs catered to him. It’s a Garfield movie for audiences who have never heard of Garfield, which reads as an attempt...

The Garfield Movie is ringing in Monday — Garfield’s least favorite day — with a new action-packed trailer.
While the first trailer shared the wholesome story of how Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt) entered Jon’s (voiced by Nicholas Hoult) life, the latest preview gets to Garfield’s unexpected reunion with his biological dad, Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson).
Garfield’s life at home with Jon and Odie is “pretty near perfect” — that is, until he’s kidnapped by a massive pitbull and sent to Vic’s whereabouts. Vic enlists the help of Garfield and Odie, never mind that he hasn’t been there for his son since he was a kitten.
“I haven’t seen you for years and when I do, you’re on the run from a deranged cat,” Garfield points out. But he eventually agrees to help Vic out, with an adventure unlike anything the lasagna-loving cat has experienced.

When the man invites him in, they end up sharing a bite of pizza — and if you know Garfield, you know it didn’t end there. The one bite leads to a montage of Garfield devouring the rest of the pie,...

Chris Pratt has traded in his plumber uniform for something with a little more fur in the first trailer for Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment’s The Garfield Movie.
The famous lasagna-loving cat is back with Pratt as the man behind the whiskers in this nearly three-minute look (below) at the movie based on Jim Davis’ famous Garfield comic series.
The film sees Garfield, “the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat,” setting out on a wild, outdoor adventure following an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat named Vic who’s voiced by Samuel L. The trailer teases a tail of an abandoned kitten fighting to survive on the streets until he sees Jon Arbuckle, a lonely man eating a pizza, through a restaurant window.

The trailer for The Garfield Movie has now made its online debut. Sony Pictures Animation is bringing to life one of the most famous lazy felines in the world. The last time Garfield had graced the silver screen was in 2006’s Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, the sequel to 2004’s Garfield, which featured Bill Murray as the titular voice that originated with Lorenzo Music, who poetically also voiced the Bill Murray role in The Real Ghostbusters. Famously, Murray had admitted to taking the role under the mistaken assumption that he was working with one of the Coen brothers (the movie was written by Joel Cohen – unrelated to the beloved duo).

Chris Pratt’s plot to dominate the world of iconic characters continues in the wake of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with the first trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” in which the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor voices the titular gluttonous cat.
The trailer opens with something of a fake-out, as it sweetly chronicles the origin of Garfield and Andy’s relationship with the story of a lost little kitty cat who happens upon a lonely man at an Italian eatery. But soon after, shenanigans ensue, including those involving Garfield’s father Vic voiced by Samuel L. Jackson.
This is not the first time “Garfield” made the jump to the big screen. Bill Murray voiced the character in the 2004 film “Garfield: The Movie” and its sequel “A Tail of Two Kitties.”
The “Garfield” movie voice cast also includes Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nichoulas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein and Bowen Yang.

Sony Pictures Animation just dropped a trailer for their upcoming film, ‘The Garfield Movie,’ and it’s catching everyone’s attention. Chris Pratt, known for his role in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ brings life to the iconic, lasagna-loving cat. The trailer hints at a unique story, showing how Garfield and his owner Jon Arbuckle meet, wrapped in a theme reminiscent of ‘The Peanuts Movie.’
What’s really exciting is the twist in the story. The movie promises a high-stakes heist, which is a departure from the usual Garfield antics. According to the studio’s synopsis, Garfield, after reuniting with his long-lost father Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson), gets dragged into a thrilling adventure. He’s not alone, though; his pal Odie joins in on the action too.
The casting for this movie is impressive. Along with Pratt and Jackson, the film features talents like Hannah Waddingham, Nicholas Hoult, Ving Rhames,...

Chris Pratt embodies the world’s most sarcastic yet endearing orange feline in the trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” premiering in theaters on May 24, 2024.
The new animated feature introduces new characters to comic creator Jim Davis’ universe, including Samuel L. Jackson as Vic, Garfield’s father. Both Pratt and Jackson have been honing their voice acting chops, with Jackson playing another animated cat in “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” and Pratt portraying Mario in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
In the trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” Pratt’s lovable fat cat explains how he adopted his owner, John. Before he dives into a tray of lasagna, he warns the audience, “I apologize in advance. This year we'll see Steve Carell having some family fun in the Disney comedy Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. And it turns out that he might have an affinity for family friendly comedies at the studio as he's just signed up for another one. THR has word that Carell will star in and produce Brooklyn Family Robinson. Though the title takes a cue from Swiss Family Robinson, the film is based on an original idea by David Reynolds (Oscar nominated co-writer of Finding Nemo) and Carell's Carousel Productions producing partners Charlie Hartsock and Vance DeGeneres. So what's it about? Well, plot details are vague "in order to protect the project's secrets," but the film will follow the father of a family (Carell) who takes his family from city life to island life. Could this be some kind of treasure adventure with a family? We're hoping...

Is it just me, or does horror material come in waves? Just as I was complaining how witches have lost their popularity status in modern day horror, during my Witching & Bitching review none the less, The Damned comes along with a sinister “bruja” cursing poor victims and raising Hell. Originally titled Gallows Hill – a more interesting headline when compared to The Damned‘s nondescript nature – director Víctor García attempts to redefine typical haunted house stories with a dash of occultism, but something feels constantly amiss. Despite a menacing child, morphing skin, and some seriously tingling chills, García’s film just isn’t as damning as we’d hope.
Peter Facinelli plays David Reynolds, an overprotective husband and father who only wants to retrieve his vacationing daughter (Nathalia Ramos) before his wedding day. Driving down a twisty, beaten road, David’s family – along with a journalist Aunt and her cameraman – find...

The Emperor’s New Groove
Written by David Reynolds, Mark Dindal, and Chris Williams
Directed by Mark Dindal
USA, 2000
With Disney leading its 1990s renaissance with self-serious tales accounting Greek (Hercules), Native American (Pocahontas), and Chinese (Mulan) empires, it may seem like a slight against the Disney-fication of the South American pre-Inca empire to present a through-and-through comedy. Indeed, The Emperor’s New Groove was fully prepared to be another historical drama firmly planted in the Disney canon under the title of Kingdom of the Sun, but thanks to economic troubles (Read as: really weird circumstances best covered in the documentary The Sweatbox. Look to Josh’s piece and the Mousterpiece Cinema podcast for further reading and listening.) its fate was left to the comedic stylings of Mark Dindal. The Emperor’s New Groove
Directed by Mark Dindal
Written by David Reynolds, Mark Dindal, and Chris Williams
Starring David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt, Patrick Warburton
One of the underlying goals of our show is to discuss the contextual issues at hand with any film we highlight. It’s impossible to attempt a halfway-intelligent discussion of the past, no matter what within the past we focus on, without deliberately acknowledging its context of our present and its original present. When we review, for example, Song of the South, it would be misleading for us not only to comment on how the film appears to us in 2013, but to focus on its initial release and subsequent re-releases, and how society reacted to it then versus now. That won’t eliminate how we feel about the actual movie, but the controversy surrounding the film is impossible to ignore. We don’t...

Finding Nemo 3D
Directed by Andrew Stanton
Co-directed by Lee Unkrich
Written by Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson, and David Reynolds
USA, 2003 and 2012
Pixar is in the middle of its growing pains as a studio. The public still loves them, but a good chunk of the media wants them to return to their glory days; any deviation from perfection makes us, apparently, more suspicious of the studio’s imperviousness. Though their last two new releases, Cars 2 and Brave, made an impressive amount of money at the box office, neither was as critically beloved as the four films preceding them—Ratatouille, Wall-e, Up, and Toy Story 3. There’s no question it was a letdown to most audiences and critics that their latest films weren’t as moving or thrilling as others, but is it really fair to blame Pixar? Is it fitting to attack a studio for not being flawless every time they take a swing?...

On August 14th and 15th, I attended the Finding Nemo 3d Press Junket in San Francisco, CA. I believe Crush, one of the loveable sea turtles from the film, sums the whole trip up best with this memorable quote:
“Saw the whole thing, dude. First you were all like “whoa”, and we were like “whoa”, and you were like “whoa…” ”
Nemo, an adventurous young clownfish, is unexpectedly taken to a dentist’s office aquarium. It’s up to Marlin (Albert Brooks), his worrisome father, and Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a friendly but forgetful Regal Blue Tang, to make the epic journey to bring Nemo home. Their adventure brings them face-to-face with vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls, and more. Marlin discovers a bravery he never knew, but will he be able to find his son?

Watch 8 clips from Finding Nemo 3D, starring Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres and Alexander Gould! It's hard to believe it's almost 10 years since the animated Disney film helmed by Andrew Stanton (John Carter) and Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) found release. Still, if there was ever an animated family film that will bring those once-were kids back into theaters, it's this one. Heck, I'll be there with my kids, since this came out a year before my son was born. Pic scripted by Bob Peterson, David Reynolds and Stanton, finds 3D re-release on September 14th, with a voice cast also including Erica Beck (Pearl), Elizabeth Perkins (Coral), Allison Janney (Peach), Barry Humphries (Bruce), Geoffrey Rush (Nigel), Vicki Lewis (Deb, Flo), John Ratzenberger (Fish School), Stephen Root (Bubbles), Erik Per Sullivan (Sheldon), Brad Garret (Bloat), Eric Bana (Anchor) and Stanton as Crush.

When Steven Spielberg recently talked about how amazing Raiders of the Lost Ark looked in 70mm on the IMAX screen, it made me giddy with anticipation in seeing one of my favorite films in a stunning format that would make it feel brand new. That's exactly what Pixar is hoping for with their 3D re-release of Finding Nemo on September 14th. In a new featurette, Pixar mastermind John Lasseter and co-directors Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich talk about their realization that the underwater elements which added depth and character to the undersea setting actually helped make a truly immersive 3D film. Though they end up on screen as cheery, bright eyed films for the whole family to enjoy, the truth is that behind the scenes, bringing an animated film to life is an arduous, exhausting journey. Freed from the constraints and demands of live action filmmaking in which you have a set script and a short window of time to make it happen, animation studios will routinely spend months and years developing, tweaking, editing and refining a project before voicework and production begins. But few films faced when Disney went through on 2000's "The Emperor's New Groove."
