Madrid (Spain), May 18 (Ians) Although La Liga doesn’t end until the weekend of June 3, Real Madrid’s season is to all intents and purposes over following their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League semifinal.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, with Barca crowned champions last weekend with four games left to play. Although Real Madrid are locked in a race with Atletico Madrid to finish second, their place in next season’s Spanish Super Cup is already assured after beating Osasuna in last month’s Copa del Rey final.
At the start of the year, the pro-Madrid press were talking about the club winning six titles this season, but in the end, they lifted just the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Cup, in which they defeated Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Al Ahly,...

New Delhi, March 2 (Ians) Alvaro Rodriguez was the name on the lips of all Real Madrid fans this weekend, despite playing less than 20 minutes in Madrid Derby draw against Atletico de Madrid.
After marking his debut last weekend with an assist in Los Blancos’ 2-0 win at CA Osasuna, Alvaro scored his first Laliga Santander goal this weekend against Real Madrid’s city rivals no less, just as a certain Raul Gonzalez did almost 30 years ago back in 1994, salvaging a hard-fought point for Carlo Ancelotti’s side and keeping the title race alive.
Alvaro’s headed goal made him the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Madrid Derby in the 21st century (18 years 226 days), beating out Gonzalo Higuaín’s record (19 years 76 days) which had stood since February 2007 but still behind Raul, who’s debut goal for the club came in a derby clash at the age of just 17 years and 131 days.

New Delhi, Feb 28 (Ians) Matchday 23 of the 2022/23 Laliga Santander season threw up a host of fascinating storylines, with several of the clubs near the top of the standings dropping points against those threatened by relegation.
Here’s a quick round-up:
Real Madrid have a new hero in Alvaro Rodriguez
There is fresh excitement at Real Madrid, who have a new hero to celebrate in the form of 18-year-old striker Alvaro Rodríguez. The academy graduate came off the bench in Los Blancos’ Madrid Derby on Saturday and headed in the equalising goal against Atleti to earn his side a 1-1 draw. That was his first goal for the senior team and proves he is one to watch, with Carlo Ancelotti already confirming he’ll have more game time this season.
Barca also fall at the Power Horse Stadium

Madrid, Feb 27 (Ians) Fc Barcelona wasted a chance to move 10 points clear at the top of La Liga when they lost 1-0 away to Almeria.
El Bilal Toure’s 23rd-minute shot, which went in off the underside of the bar, led to the only goal of the game as the forward found space between the Barcelona defenders, reports Xinhua news agency.
What followed was an exercise in frustration for Barca who tried, but failed to create clear chances against a rival that had lost three consecutive matches and started the game in the relegation zone.
Xavi Hernandez commented post-match that it was his side’s worst display of the season.
The result ends a dreadful week for Barca, who were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday night as they wasted the chance to take an almost definitive grip on La Liga after a 1-1 draw between second-placed Real...

Madrid (Spain), Feb 26 (Ians) Fc Barcelona can go 10 points clear at the top of La Liga on Sunday if they win away to Almeria after Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid.
After a dull first half, where the main incident was a cruciate ligament injury suffered by Atletico left back Reinildo Mandava (who will miss the rest of the season), Atletico were reduced to 10 men in the 64th minute after Angel Correa was sent off for an apparent elbow in the chest of Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger.
Despite being down to 10 men, Atletico took the lead in the 78th minute through Jose Gimenez’s header from a set piece on Saturday night.
It looked as if Atletico were on for an unlikely three points, but Real Madrid’s young forward, Alvaro Rodriguez equalized five minutes from time from Luka Modric’s corner,...

Madrid (Spain), Feb 20 (Ians) Midfielders Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni have both been left out of the Real Madrid squad that left for Liverpool on Monday ahead of their UEFA Champions League last-16 first-leg tie.
The duo missed Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Osasuna with flu and neither has recovered in time for the game. That limits the options of coach Carlo Ancelotti in midfield, and the Italian will almost certainly line up with Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga.
The good news for Madrid is that Karim Benzema has shaken off the slight muscle issue that sidelined him at the weekend and has been included in the squad, reports Xinhua.
Ancelotti has also called up B-team striker Alvaro Rodriguez, who impressed in a brief substitute appearance on Saturday night. The tall forward set up Vinicius Jr for a goal that was disallowed for offside and then assisted...

Madrid, Feb 20 (Ians) Two goals in the last three minutes of the first half saw Fc Barcelona win 2-0 at home over Cadiz, which keeps them eight points clear at the top of La Liga after 22 rounds.
Sergi Roberto and Robert Lewandowski scored the goals, which gave Barca, with several changes in their starting 11, three vital points, reports Xinhua news agency.
Barca were struggling to break down a tough Cadiz defense until the 43rd minute when Ferran Torres crossed for Lewandowski to head toward the goal. The striker’s header was blocked, but Roberto was on hand to score from close range.
Lewandowski doubled Barca’s lead two minutes later when he worked space to fire home a powerful left shot on the verge of halftime.

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise.
This installment comes from Alvaro Rodriguez, who's cowriting El Rey cable show From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series and who's been my favorite Austin Film Festival panelist. Here's his pick, which is also a favorite of Jette and Elizabeth:
Ball of Fire (1941), directed by Howard Hawks, with screenwriters Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder. Slough off the winter doldrums with a classic comedy, whydoncha? Surely one of the greats in so many genres, Barbara Stanwyck makes words sexy in Howard Hawks' Ball of Fire, a jazzy update of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and one of my favorite go-to holiday flicks. Here, Babs is Sugarpuss O'Shea (oh, hell, yes), a nightclub artiste who hides out from the mob in a house full of...

Watch a new movie clip from Robert Rodriguez' Machete. Danny Trejo returns as the title character in the film scripted by Kyle Ward from the characters created by Alvaro Rodriguez. Sure, this one, and the first Machete, weren't for everyone, but man does this one look hysterical judging from the trailer. Also on board are Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson.

First off, let me apologize to you, dear readers, for getting this week’s column to you so late – it’s been crazy busy on my end, and this got away from me. In happier news, over the weekend, I finally saw The Wolverine, and I have to say that I liked it more than I thought I would. More importantly, this week finally sees the release of Elysium, which I am planning to see as soon as I can. And looking beyond the end of summer, this week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’ takes another look at one of my most anticipated films of the fall, Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills.
Premise: Mexican ex-Federal agent Machete Cortez (Danny Trejo) is recruited by the President of the United States (Charlie Sheen) for a mission that would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must take down eccentric billionaire arms dealer...

Check out the new poster for Machete Kills with Marko Zaror. Robert Rodriguez directs the action follow up starring Danny Trejo as Machete Cortez. Pic helmed by Robert Rodriguez from the script by Kyle Ward and characters by Alvaro Rodriguez, also stars Amber Heard, Sofía Vergara, Mel Gibson, Alexa Vega, Charlie Sheen, Jessica Alba, Vanessa Hudgens, Michelle Rodriguez and Cuba Gooding Jr. Fox's first Machete movie opened on September 3rd, 2010 with $11.4 million before ending off its domestic box office run with $26.5 million, and overseas sales of $17.4 million. My number-one recommendation to anyone interested in screenwriting in Austin is to pay close attention to the Austin Film Festival (Aff) offerings. Not just the mentoring sessions and panels at the festival itself in October, but also throughout the year when Aff hosts "Conversations in Film" screenings and sessions. This series brings veterans of the television and film industry together with fans as well as emerging filmmakers and writers to discuss their works and the medium.
The most recent Conversations in Film session, on Sunday, March 25, at the Harry Ransom Center, featured Academy Award-winning screenwriter Ted Tally (White Palace, The Silence of the Lambs, All the Pretty Horses) and was moderated by Alvaro Rodriguez (From Dusk Til Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter, Machete) -- seen above. Tally has received acclaim for his adaptations of the works of bestselling authors including Cormac McCarthy, Thomas Harris, Rosellen Brown and George Dawes Green.

Earlier this summer I drove down to Austin for the 'Words That Go Bump In The Night: Writing Horror Films' event hosted by the Austin Film Festival. Tom Holland (Child's Play, Fright Night) and Alvaro Rodriguez (From Dusk Til Dawn 3, Machete) spent a few hours sharing stories about the successes and hardships of screenwriting. The conversation was great fun though I really wanted an opportunity to ask a few questions I could share with our audience of aspiring screenwriters here at Tmp. Luckily, I was given the opportunity a few days later to pick Alvaro Rodriguez's brain for your benefit.
Tmp: What is it that drove you toward a career as a writer?
Alvaro: I was always attracted to writing, from earliest childhood. I admit I was a little perplexed by the nebulousness of it all, the challenge of making something out of nothing, and figuring it all out.

One of the most frequent questions in panels at Austin film festivals I've attended is, "What is available here for writers?" My advice on where to find the best content at a local film festival is the Austin Film Festival (Aff). Durng the mentoring sessions, roundtables and panels, emerging writers and filmmakers interact with veterans of the television and film industry.

Fright Night: Then And Now
With the Fright Night remake hitting theaters nationwide August 19th, Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse Theater and the Austin Film Festival teamed up to screen the original Fright Night. Not only did it give fans the opportunity to see the cult ‘80s classic on the big screen, but the screening was hosted by Fright Night writer/director Tom Holland and Machete scribe Alvaro Rodriguez, with a Q&A afterwards.

I'm pleased that one of the movies I've enjoyed most this summer is opening this weekend -- the one with the aliens. No, not the one with the cowboys and aliens, the one with teenage London hoodlums and aliens. In addition to your choice of movies featuring outer-space creatures, you can also enjoy Smurfs and Steve Carell (not in the same movie), and some good indie films.
Of course, as usual Austin has plenty of special screenings going on. On Sunday night, Alamo Drafthouse's Cinema Club brings Bell Book and Candle back to the big screen, followed by a discussion with Austin Chronicle film critic Marc Savlov. On Monday, you can head to the At&T Conference Center to hear horror writers Tom Holland and Austinite Alvaro Rodriguez take part in an Austin Film Festival Concersations in Film called "Words That Go Bump in the Night." Machete
Stars: Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Don Johnson, Jeff Fahey, Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, and Cheech Marin | Written by Robert Rodriguez, Álvaro Rodríguez | Directed by Ethan Maniquis, Robert Rodriguez
After causing a storm as a faux-trailer in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, Machete finally makes it to the big screen as a feature-length movie filled with bullets, boobs and bloodshed! Danny Trejo plays the titular character – a bad-ass Mexican federale turned mercenary, turned hero who – after seeing his wife brutally murdered and himself left for dead – is set up for the assassination of a Us Senator by a cadre of corrupt officials intent on ridding the south of illegal immigrants. Trejo’s Machete takes his (bloody) revenge on those that had set him up with the help of Michelle Rodriguez, a street vendor come revolutionary by the name of She, and a sexy...

One of our favorite foreign films at Sundance was All Your Dead Ones, directed by Colombia’s Carlos Moreno. It’s a slightly absurdist fable in which a poor farmer finds a pile of dead bodies dumped in his field on election day. The story is slow-moving but powerful, the acting is wonderful (especially by lead Alvaro Rodriguez and by Jorge Herrema as the mayor), and the cinematography is marvelous (the film won a Special Jury award for cinematography). Moreno sat down with Paste for a few minutes in Park City, just a few hours before he won his award....

While thumbing through the vast amount of films playing at Sundance 2011, we came across one flick that has completely slid under our radar and sounds right up our alley. So we did what we always do - dug deeper, made phone calls, sacrificed an entire bucket of KFC, and came up with a trailer for you guys!
Below you'll find your first look at All Your Dead Ones, aka Todos Tus Muertos. The film directed by Carlos Moreno stars Alvaro Rodriguez. One look at the plot crunch below, and you'll know why we started rooting out some info! Dig it!
Synopsis:
In this eerie and fantastically shot tragicomic satire, an ordinary farmer's morning routine is interrupted when he makes a grim discovery in the middle of his cornfield — a huge pile of dead bodies. Aghast, he reports the mysterious massacre on what happens to be Election Day. When the small-town...

Chicago – “Machete” may be one of the most wonderfully-conceived films of 2010. The idea that one of the fake trailers from “Grindhouse” could ever become a full-length film is a movie lover’s dream come true (and it’s so ironic that “Machete” grossed more domestically than the movie that spawned it). While I love the very existence of “Machete,” the movie itself is something of a disappointment, and it’s not helped by a mediocre Blu-ray that barely has any special features.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
Robert Rodriguez is an undeniably-talented man with great ideas but little concept of pacing and an inability to edit his own material down to a reasonable slice of entertainment. There’s a lot to like here and it’s better to be able to watch it at home in installments but Rodriguez has no idea when to quit.

“Machete will more than satisfy lovers of exploitation cinema and demand it’s promise of two sequels.”
Machete
Directed by Robert Rodriguez and co-director Ethan Maniquis
Three years after he was forced to watch the murder of his wife and is betrayed by the organization who hired him, an ex-Federale (Danny Trejo) launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss and a Texas senator (Robert De Niro) who fights to stop illegal immigration.
It took three years, but Machete, whose fake trailer showcased before the B-picture homage Grindhouse, finally hit the cineplex. Anyone who found themselves excited by that teasing coming attraction will no doubt be satiated by the relentless onslaught of over-the-top violence, extreme gore, unnecessary nudity and cheap laughs that directors Rodriguez and Maniquis deliver in it’s full-length incarnation. Sugarcoat it with a dose of political satire and Machete is everything The Expendables should have been – self-aware,...

We've been anticipating it all summer. But does Danny Trejo as Machete deliver the goods? Ron's been finding out...
When an honest Mexican federale (or federal agent) code-named Machete (Danny Trejo) is double-crossed by his bosses and delivered over to the evil drug lord Torres (a wonderfully malicious Steven Seagal), everything Machete's ever loved is killed right in front of him. His wife? Beheaded. His daughter, also presumably killed. Machete himself is stabbed and left for dead in a burning building.
Little did they know, what doesn't kill him only makes him kill you at a later date.
Three years later, Machete resurfaces in America. An illegal immigrant, Machete does the work that pretty much every other illegal in America does: the nasty, hot, and/or difficult stuff that most people who have a choice won't do, save for entirely too much money. Machete's just another day laborer,...

“Machete’’ began life as one of the fake trailers in “Grindhouse,’’ the 2007 Rodriguez-Quentin Tarantino collaboration that allowed both directors to pay homage to their splattery ’70s drive-in roots. Part of the gag was seeing Trejo, an ex-con and boxer who since the mid-’80s has been a visual signifier of extreme threat in the corner of over 140 movies, pretend to have a shot at a lead role. The far better gag is that Trejo holds the center of the expanded “Machete’’ beautifully, his death-whisper voice and that unforgettable slab of a face, etched with creases and sin, providing an anchor for the supporting stars to wheel around.
It’s fitting that Machete originated as a trailer, albeit a fake one, attached to Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s ’70s-exploitation-movie homage Grindhouse. Trailers routinely assemble the most exciting parts of a movie into a two-minute punch, and in trailer form,...

Bundled up in the overall awesomeness that was the 2007 film double-feature Grindhouse was a series of fake trailers done with such ecstatic reverence and celebration of old Grindhouse style films that many found them to be the most entertaining thing in the entire presentation. Robert Rodriguez's trailer for the fictional Machete was among fan favorites, and it wasn't long after the release of Grindhouse that it was announced that Machete was going to be made for real. If people actually loved the trailer that much - why not actually make it happen? So that is exactly what Robert Rodriguez set out to do.

Director: Robert Rodriguez, Ethan Maniquis (co-director) Writers: Robert Rodriguez, Álvaro Rodríguez Starring: Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey, Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, Lindsay Lohan The film opens as the titular Mexican Federale, Machete (Danny Trejo), is double-crossed by his commanding officer and thus witnesses the brutal murder of his family at the hands of Torrez (Steven Seagal), Mexico’s grand drug lord. Machete next appears as a day laborer in Texas where he is approached by Booth (Jeff Fahey) and offered a hefty sum of $150,000 to assassinate the xenophobic Texas Senator McLaughlin (Robert De Niro). (McLaughlin has been running campaign advertisements denouncing illegal immigrants as parasites and roaches – the Senator’s friends include crazed Minuteman and self-proclaimed boarder guard, Lt. Stillman [Don Johnson].) Booth is actually on McLaughlin’s payroll and is also associated with Torrez. The assassination job is merely a set-up, sending Machete...

A New international trailer and a couple of images have been sent over for upcoming action flick Machete.
It stars Danny Trejo as a man who earns that street name by carrying no fewer than 44 blades in his custom-made leather vest.
While most film fans believe the project was born in a now-legendary fake trailer made by Robert Rodriguez as part of his and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 B-movie tribute Grindhouse, the idea was actually conceived years before.
In the early 1990s, when Rodriguez was prepping his second motion picture Desperado, he thought the time was right for a Latin movie hero, which he codenamed Machete. When Danny Trejo arrived on set, Rodriguez knew he was ideal for the part.
Much later, the fake Machete trailer created a tremendous response and, finally, Rodriguez committed to a feature film version. He honed the screenplay with co-writer Alvaro Rodriguez, brought in Ethan Maniquis as co-director,...

Danny Trejo in Machete
Photo: 20th Century Fox My interest in seeing Robert Rodriguez's grindhouse feature (co-directed by Ethan Maniquis) Machete was limited. When the faux trailer accompanied the Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse double-feature in 2007 it was funny, but I never took it seriously or considered it as anything more than a comical interlude. Now, it's a reality and my tune has changed. Audiences ready for what Machete has to offer are going to eat this film up.
If you wanted more of what that fake trailer offered that's exactly what you're getting. More blood. More beheadings. More gore. More nudity. Just plain more. Best of all is that it actually has a story (slim as it may be), and even more surprising is most of the scenes from the fake trailer carry over into the real film. I can only assume, had Grindhouse done better in theaters,...

Facts of interest: Rodriguez wrote the script many years ago.
The plot: Machete is an ex-Federale who goes after some bad guys who screwed him over and messed with his family.

Boasting insane, bloody battles, loud explosions and the most hilarious dialogue all over the place, “Machete” may just be one of the most thrilling and entertaining films of 2010.

Chicago – Not everything should be filet mignon. Sometimes you just want a greasy, delicious cheeseburger. Now imagine eating ten of those cheeseburgers in a row. Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete” starts as a wonderful gore-fest but falls victim to its creator’s inability to realize he doesn’t need to answer to every violent vision he can dream up. The film is proof that even extremely over-the-top films can be monotonous in that their one tone is “Argh!”

HollywoodNews.com: Film Review — If there was a classroom full of action directors, such as Michael Bay, Gore Verbinski and McG, Robert Rodriguez would be that rascal who would take them hostage, rap their knuckles with a ruler and stick their noses in a corner.
What would Rodriguez inculcate? How to make an efficient, hyper-kinetic edited, voluptuous action film, employing the most zealous dramatic ensemble.
To fault Rodriguez for his campy, snuff-inspired shoot-em ups would be like shortchanging John Woo’s talents for executing chopsocky ballet or Martin Scorsese’s overindulgence in Italian-Catholic symbolism.

Much like those guys whose cinema is beholden to their heritage, Rodriguez’s actioners, like a rich Sopaipilla drowned in honey, are drenched in sexy melodrama, exploitative action and South of the Border mythos.
