A truly fascinating rarity from the U.S.S.R., Karen Shahknazarov’s wickedly droll satire proves that the country Reagan called an ‘Evil Empire’ was radically changing in the late 1980s. Half Kafka paranoia and partly a Valentine to American freedoms, it takes the psychological temperature of a society that just plain no longer functions. Leonid Filatov’s unflappable engineer arrives in a rural Russian town and might as well be a Soviet Alice dropped down a rabbit hole — things get crazier and crazier, and nobody wants to let him in on the cosmic joke. The weird tale’s strength is its visual creativity, but it also generates an unexpected affection for its characters, nice people caught in a frustrating system.

Kate Winslet is the first honoree to be announced by Joana Vicente and Cameron Bailey, co-heads of the Toronto Film Festival, as recipient of this year’s TIFF Tribute Actor Award. It will be presented September 15 during a “virtual ceremony” as part of the 45th edition of the slimmed-down fest, which like everything else has been deeply impacted by the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.
Winslet’s film Ammonite was previously announced as a TIFF official selection where, after Telluride’s cancellation Tuesday, it is likely to be the first fest where the Neon Oscar-season hopeful will be seen. Last month, the Cannes Film Festival revealed the movie was a main competition selection for that fest, which of course did not take place. Nevertheless, the Cannes logo will appear on the film anyway.
“Kate’s brilliant and compelling onscreen presence continues to captivate, entertain, and inspire audiences and actors alike,” said Vicente.

One of the most interesting sections of Cannes Film Festival each year is their Classics section, which is made up of new restorations and filmmaking-related documentaries. The lineup often gives a look ahead at what classic and overlooked films may be getting new Blu-ray editions, as well as digital debuts, and theatrical re-releases. Following the reveal of Cannes-selected premieres this year, they’ve now unveiled their Classics lineup.
This year’s slate, made up of 25 features and 7 documentaries, will screen at the Lumière festival in Lyon and by the Rencontres Cinématographiques de Cannes. Leading the pack, and announced a few months ago, is the new 20th anniversary restoration of In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar-wai. Also in the lineup is 60th anniversary restorations of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless and Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Avventura, while a selection of Federico Fellini classics have been restored for this 100th birthday.

In this entertaining fantasy from the Soviet era, a brilliant pianist is expelled from the music academy because of his passion for decadent American jazz
Only in a Woody Allen film will you hear quite as much Dixieland jazz as this. Here is We Are from Jazz, or We Are Jazzmen, the zany jazz comedy musical from Russian director Karen Shakhnazarov, originally released in 1983, but now revived as part of the Melodia! festival of Russian musicals at London’s BFI Southbank and Ciné Lumière.
Shakhnazarov is now a rather establishment figure in Putin’s Russia as director general of the official Mosfilm studios and supporter of the party line, but his breakthrough film showed him to be a sprightly, subversive, comic talent – a tweaker of authority’s nose. His story imagines the birth of jazz in the Soviet Union, and it has the spirit of Hollywood movies such as George Roy Hill...

A man is born out of the ashes of defeat to act out a spectacular war story that may never end. The official submission of Russia to the Best Foreign Language Film of the 85th Academy Awards 2013, Karen Shakhnazarov.s scintillating thriller presents an entirely different side of tank warfare. Set in the closing days of WWII, Russian forces are closing in on Berlin after months of brutal fighting and unparalleled casualties. After one of many horrendous tank and infantry battles, an injured tank commander (Aleksey Vertkov) is pulled from the wreckage and thrown into the back of a truck headed for the medical battalion. The Oscar season is almost upon us, and the submissions list is in for the Best Foreign Language Film category, featuring a record 71 entries, including the first submission from Kenya.
Last year, Iran’s Asghar Farhadi came away with the top prize for his acclaimed film, A Separation, and the year before, it was Denmark’s Susanne Bier with her In a Better World.
This year, there are already a handful of strong contenders amongst the pack, most notably Michael Haneke’s Amour, for Austria, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes; Olivier Nakache’s and Éric Toledano’s The Intouchables, for France, which has been breaking records at the global box office; Pablo Larráin’s No, for Chile, which also came away from Cannes with an award in hand; Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta, for South Korea, which took four awards at Venice, including (controversially) the Golden Lion; and...

Update: The official list has been revealed and the total is a record 71 movies. I have updated the list directly below or you can check it out here. The original article follows. I have been tracking the Oscar Foreign Language submissions again this year, as I have for the past several years, and it looks like we finally have a full field as I expect we will be seeing an official press release from the Academy some time this week. This year we have five more submissions already over last year as the total has now reached 68 submissions compared to last year's 63. This, despite, Iran boycotting the Oscars this year due to the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims, which has sparked so much controversy as of late. To reach the total of 68 films I have just finished adding 16 more titles to the list from the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina,...

Anurag Basu’s Barfi to compete with Michael Haneke’s “Amour” and Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta”
Anurag Basu’s “Barfi” might have lured the selectors at home but it’s unlikely to have an easy ride ahead. Basu will have to compete against the veterans like Michael Haneke who took home a second Palme d’Or at Cannes this year for his “Amour” (Official Austrian Entry). Closer home in Asia, Korean Master Kim Ki-duk will also pose an equal threat to the Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer Barfi. Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta” clinched the Golden Lion at Venice this year.
“Barfi” was declared official Oscar entry from India on Saturday night by the Film Federation of India. Other Indian films which were in race included Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar, Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani, Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur Parts I and II,...

A number of big budget war epics have rolled out of Russia in recent years but I'm hard pressed to think of one that looked more impressive than Karen Shakhnazarov's upcoming White Tiger.Backed by Russia's Mosfilm Studio, this is grand scale move making, a picture set towards the end of World War II, when Russia paid a ferocious price to stop the German advance. WWII saw military technology advance like no other war before it and the tank was a major new factor on the battlefield, one which is far and away the dominant force here. Check out the trailer below....

Kino will release the 2009 drama film Ward No. 6 by veteran Russian filmmaker Karen Shakhnazarov (Jazzman) on DVD on May 24.
The future looks bleak for Vladimir Ilyin and Alexey Vertkov in Ward No. 6.
Adapted from the great Anton Chekhov’s 1892 short story of the same name and updating it to the present day, the movie tells the story of Dr. Ragin (Vladimir Ilyin), who heads up a provincial insane asylum, where he regularly interacts with the abandoned, the unloved and the forgotten. Lonely and isolated in his personal life, he finds solace in the long philosophical dialogues with his brilliant patient Gromov (Alexey Vertkov), which lead him to dangerously question the nature of his own existence.
Presented in Russian with English subtitles, Ward No. 6 had a brief theatrical release in the U.S. following an international film festival rollout in 2009.

‘The Vanished Empire‘ came out of left field to this viewer, especially when it comes to a part of youth that I never thought about in the first place. Soviet youth sounds like it would be about war torn Russia, at least to a close-minded individual, but watching the new film by Karen Shakhnazarov, it shows us that no matter what time and country it might be set in, a film about teenagers tends to be about the same thing: friends, girls, betrayal, school, banned rock music and the collapse of a society around them.
The film follows Sergey Narbekov (Alexander Lyapin), who is a student in 1973 Moscow, who likes Lyuda (Lidiya Milyuzina) and wishes to impress her any chance he gets. One moment in the film is when he thinks he’s bought a mint LP of the Rolling Stones’ “Goat’s Head Soup” for Lyuda, but when he...

At the recent Russian Resurrection Film Festival, the organisers introduced a critics' jury, comprised of film critics, academics and filmmakers. And the inaugural prize went to Ward No. 6. One of the members of the jury, Filmink's own Julian Wood provides a film review below. Ward No. 6 Time 83 minutes Country Russia Directors Aleksandr Gornovsky, Karen Shakhnazarov Cast Vladimir Ilyin, Aleksei Vertkov, Aleksandr Pankratov-Chyorny Distributor Russian Resurrection Film Festival Worth $15.00/$15.50 Small is beautiful. Although a mere 83 minutes long Aleksandr Gornovsky and Karen Shakhnazarov's psychological drama packs a big punch. Largely this is down to the winning performance of veteran Russian character actor Vladimir Ilyrin as the protagonist Ragin (in the same year Ilyrin was in the acclaimed epic Taras Bulba).

The October 1st deadline for all countries wanting into the Academy Award's foreign-language film category has come and gone. According to IndieWIRE [1], The United Kingdom, which has predominantly submitted Welsh films over the years (if submitting at all), has surprisingly chosen the documentary Afghan Star as its 2009 submission for the Academy Awards. The last time the country received a nomination in this category was in 1999, when Paul Morrison's Welsh and Yiddish Solomon and Gaenor lost out to Pedro Almodovar's All About My Mother. Synopsis After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, pop Idol has come to Afghanistan. Millions are watching the TV series 'Afghan Star' and voting for their favorite singers by mobile phone. For many this is their first encounter with democracy. This timely film follows the dramatic stories of four contestants as they risk all to become the nation's favorite singer. But will they...

Moscow – The Russian government has prepared a development program for state-run studio facilities, under which studio complexes will be consolidated and private investors will be brought in.
Under the program, Moscow’s Gorky Studio will obtain control of smaller Kazan Studios in the Volga region and North Caucasus Studios. St. Petersburg’s Lenfilm will take over the St. Petersburg Documentary Studios, while privately-run Russian World Studios, whose main studio assets are also located in St. Petersburg, will be brought in as an investor in Lenfilm to form a “state/private partnership.”
“We are interested in this project,” Stanislav Yershov, Gorky Studio’s general director, told The Hollywood Reporter. “We receive a lot of requests for postproduction services from other cities and having assets in the country’s regions would give us more business opportunities.” According to Yershov, it would take about six months for the program to go ahead.

Moscow -- Not a single movie is currently being shot at Mosfilm, Russia's largest studio complex, reflecting the situation in the movie industry here, hit by the global economic downturn as well as uncertainty with state support.
Karen Shakhnazarov, Mosfilm's general director, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that no film is being shot at the studio complex's stages, though some previously shot movies are in postproduction at Mosfilm's facilities. Between 130 and 140 film projects used Mosfilm's services last year, Shakhnazarov said.
"There are several factors that have had an impact on the situation," Shakhnazarov said. "First, it's the overall economic crisis, due to which private investors have pulled out of the film industry. Second, the ministry of culture has been unable to finally decide on what basis it will be providing funding for film projects, and state monies are not coming into the industry, either."

Death tells the story of Boris Savinkov, a leader of the terrorist faction of Russia's Socialist-Revolutionary Party and an active participant in the killing of Russian governors and ministers in pre-Soviet Russia. It is set to open in New York in April. Day is loosely based on a prison diary by Luxembourgian priest Jean Bernard recounting his experiences during the Nazi era.
