Now that Endeavour has ended for good, there are a few obvious places for fans to go in search of more of the crossword-solving, bitter-drinking, classics-quoting Oxford detective. The first are Colin Dexter’s novels, which established the character. The second is the original ITV show Inspector Morse based on those books, which starred John Thaw in the title role for 33 feature-length episodes between 1987 and 2000. Thirdly, there’s sequel Lewis, which continued the story of Morse’s underling Robbie through his own inspector days, and which also ran for 33 episodes, up until 2015. Both are currently streamable on BritBox in the UK and US, as well as Itvx, and PBS Masterpiece.
The likelihood though, is that those three will have already been exhausted by Morse devotees, so here are some recommendations of detective shows with a touch of Endeavour about them, whether it’s a melancholic lead with a brilliant mind,...

Horror and television have always been a bit of an awkward fit. What’s scary and what’s bingeable sometimes seem mutually exclusive. Horror requires that you suspend your disbelief and the longer it asks of your attention span, the higher the risk that the tension wanes.
Still, in the modern streaming era, there are plenty of horror TV shows that get the spooky job done. Gathered on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and HBO Max are some truly great bingeable options to elevate the heart rate. Here we’ve compiled the very best of the best. What follows are the 31 best streaming horror TV shows.
American Horror Story
Available on: Netflix, Hulu
Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story is revolutionary in quite a few ways. Not only did it help usher in a renewed era of anthology storytelling on television, it also was arguably the first successful network television horror show since The X-Files.

Martin Shaw, who has headlined some of the most popular English dramas of the last half century, says he has the role of his career in “George Gently” as the title character, a police detective who struggles to find his footing after his wife is killed. The long-running British series is finally eligible for the Emmys thanks to the participation of the streaming service Acorn TV.
Back in 2007, Shaw had his pick of projects and was drawn to this loose adaptation of the Alan Hunter crime novels by the creative forces behind the scenes. “Peter Flannery has such a wonderful reputation. He’d won awards for ‘Our Friends in the North.’ His name first and foremost made me drive to London to meet. I read the first script and thought it was sensational.”

The last installment in the series, “George Gently and the New Age,” is contending for Best TV Movie at the 2018 Emmys. This finale brings Shaw’s character full circle as he inches closer to solving the death of his wife. That tragedy had been he catalyst for Gently leaving London in 1964 and joining the North East police force.

I’d been introduced to Tolkien through The Hobbit, my Grandad’s hardback edition with the lovely blue, black and green illustrations on the cover, followed by the infamously long (physically as well as temporally) BBC radio adaptations of The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings, which were brought on long car journeys to take the edge off the M6. When I was six my parents recorded the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated version of Lord Of The Rings off the telly, and due to the volume of rewatching I specifically remember the white box with a rainbow coloured motif on the front (I fully expect someone to...

I've got a great new trailer here for you to watch from a new action-thriller called 6 Days. The movie is based on a true story of an attack on the Iranian Embassy that took place in London in 1980. The trailer does a solid job of building the intensisty. It looks like a great film and it has a solid cast that is lead by the talented Jaimie Bell and Mark Strong. Here's the synopsis:
In April 1980, six armed gunmen stormed the Iranian Embassy in Princes Gate, London, taking 26 people inside hostage. Over the next six days a tense standoff took place, all the while a group of highly trained soldiers from the Sas prepared for a raid, the likes of which the world had never seen before.

"It's down to the negotiators to break the deadlock. Or, your men will have to storm the embassy." An official full-length trailer has debuted for the true story action thriller film 6 Days, about the attack on the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980. The standoff lasted for six days, with a group of Sas soldiers eventually breaching the embassy to put an end to the horror. Jamie Bell stars as one of the special forces soldiers tasked with leading the raid. This also stars Mark Strong, Abbie Cornish, Emun Elliott, Nicholas Boulton, Martin Shaw, and Tim Downie. 6 Days is the latest film from the director of the Maori action film The Dead Lands. This actually looks damn good, with an impressive cast that makes it worth watching. In 1980, the Iranian Embassy in London was the victim of a terrorist attack. There was a standoff that lasted six days until a group of Sas soldiers breached the embassy to end the attack. This film, directed by Toa Fraser and starring Jaime Bell and Mark Strong, follows the events of that attack and the six days leading up to its liberation from terrorists.
The film also stars Abbie Cornish, Emun Elliott, Nicholas Boulton, Martin Shaw, and Tim Downie. It was shot in London and so far it looks very fairly thrilling. The trailer gives us a good look at what we can expect. Although I'm not a huge war and terrorist thwarting movie fan, the politics behind what happens before an attack goes down is always so interesting to me. Check the trailer out below.

Numerous actors have occupied the role of Sherlock Holmes over the decades, some more suited to the shoes of author Arthur Conan Doyle's famous consulting detective than others. One of the finest portrayals is that by Ian Richardson. Yet, sadly, his is also one that is often overlooked, not leastways because he played the character just twice (in a pair of 1983 films made for television), but also because his light was to be quickly eclipsed a year later by the arrival on TV screens of Jeremy Brett, whose interpretation of Holmes is considered by many to be the definitive one.
Sy Weintraub – who produced several Tarzan movies throughout the 60s and was executive producer on the popular long-running Ron Ely TV series –teamed up with Otto Plaschkes (whose producer credits include Georgie Girl and The Holcroft Covenant) with the intention of making several Holmes adventures headlining Richardson.

Constance Cummings: Stage and film actress ca. early 1940s. Constance Cummings on stage: From Sacha Guitry to Clifford Odets (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Flawless 'Blithe Spirit,' Supporter of Political Refugees.”) In the post-World War II years, Constance Cummings' stage reputation continued to grow on the English stage, in plays as diverse as: Stephen Powys (pseudonym for P.G. (1948), with Cummings as one of shop clerk Denholm Elliott's mistresses (the other one was Betty Marsden). “Miss Cummings and Miss Marsden act as fetchingly as they look,” commented The Spectator. Writer, publisher and TV producer who made drama for children and adults
Ruth Boswell, who has died aged 86, “got into telly” after a job reading unsolicited scripts for Atv during the early 1960s. She went on to script editing and producing in Atv’s children’s department, where she made the series Timeslip (1970) and The Tomorrow People (1973). Her instinct for storytelling, combined with her own knowledge of loss in childhood, gave her insight into children’s emotional development through the arts.
She later moved into adult drama at the BBC, where she and her husband, Greg Stewart, a psychiatrist, helped to develop Maybury (1981-83), a series about people with mental health problems, written by Shane Connaughton and featuring a young Kenneth Branagh. Then she moved on to Anglia TV to make the series The Chief (1990-95) with Tim Pigott-Smith and Martin Shaw. She also produced a feature film, The Run of the Country...

The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.

We pay tribute to Brian Clemens, a screenwriter and producer whose work lit up 1970s cult TV and beyond...
Brian Clemens, who died earlier this week aged 83, was a highly respected screenwriter and producer both for TV and Film. He will chiefly be remembered for his work on The Avengers, The New Avengers and The Professionals but his credits were numerous and encapsulated a real golden age of cult, escapist television from the 1950s onwards.
Clemens was born in Croydon in July 1931. He spent his National Service as a Weapons Training Instructor. After spending time as a copywriter, he established himself as a scriptwriter - sometimes using the pseudonym "Tony O'Grady" - O'Grady being his mother's maiden name. He received his first commission from the BBC at the age of 24 - a thriller called Valid For Single Journey Only. He went on to write for many of the big TV...

Macbeth was the first film Roman Polanski made following the murder of his wife, Sharon Tate, and friends at the hands of the Manson family. At the time he'd been working on the sci-fi thriller The Day of the Dolphin, which would later be made by Mike Nichols. It was during a skiing trip arranged by Victor Lownes, a subsequent producer of the film, Polanski made the decision Macbeth would be his next film. It was a decision he made feeling his next film "should be something serious, not a comedy... something with some depth." Polanski would team with Kenneth Tynan to write the screenplay and, thanks to urging from Lownes, Hugh Hefner and Playboy would eventually serve as the film's producer after no one else would touch it. As Polanski notes in an included 60-minute documentary on this new Criterion Blu-ray release, to that point there had only been...

Macbeth
Written by Roman Polanski and Kenneth Tynan
Directed by Roman Polanski
UK, 1971
Following the success of Rosemary’s Baby in 1968, and prior to what is arguably still his greatest film, Chinatown (1974), Roman Polanski made three curious filmmaking choices. One was the international coproduction and rarely discussed What? (1972), one was the racing documentary Weekend of a Champion (1972), and the third, which actually came before these two, was Macbeth (1971). It is obviously not that a Shakespearean adaptation in itself is unusual, but rather that it so seemingly diverted from the films that were garnering the young Polanski his worldwide acclaim: taut thrillers like The Knife in the Water (1962), Repulsion (1965), Cul-De-Sac (1966), and Rosemary’s Baby. Yet in Macbeth, there are a number of characteristic Polanski touches — in story and style — harkening back to these previous works and in many ways pointing toward those to come.

Acorn TV Review: Inspector George Gently– Blue For Bluebird
Filming is about to get underway for the eighth season of the popular BBC 60s era cop drama Inspector George Gently. Cast regulars Martin Shaw (Gently) and Lee Ingleby (Bacchus) return alongside Lisa McGrillis as Wpc Coles. The new series is set at the end of the tumultuous decade and you can expect to see plenty of new innovations including furry dice and police radios.
Writer Peter Flannery wrote the first two of the four feature-length stories that will air early next year. As production work gears up Flannery gave fans in insight into the new season. “As the 60s draw to a close the issues facing policing seem more relevant than ever. We’re looking at the way rape complaints are met by the police – and nothing much seems to have really changed there, except perhaps the terminology. And we...

Whilst "Skyfall" saw the return of some of the more iconic elements of the James Bond franchise, one element that was missing is that of an iconic henchman - the last one arguably being Famke Janssen's Xenia Onatopp in "Goldeneye".
A new report over at James Bond Radio claims that the twenty-fourth Bond film's director Sam Mendes is aiming to fill that gap and is looking for just such an actor.
This one will apparently be less about crushing men between their thighs and more in line with the tall and imposing types from earlier films like Jaws (Richard Kiel) or Red Grant (Martin Shaw). There's even a description:
Hinx (Male, 30 – 45) - Ideally over 6' 2". Hinx is the main henchman/assassin. We are looking for an imposing extremely physically fit actor. He has several fights with Bond and will have to have stunt training. He has to drive. We...

To mark the release of The Professionals Mk1 on 31st March, we’ve been given 1 copy to give away on Blu-ray.
Bodie and Doyle need little by way of introduction, but if the series had at all escaped you since its debut in 1977, their boss George Cowley, head of CI5 couldn’t put it more succinctly than his opening gambit: “…anarchy, acts of terror, crimes against the public. To combat it I’ve got special men experts from the army, the police, from every service. These are The Professionals”. Featuring the perfect ensemble cast of Martin Shaw, Gordon Jackson (completely against type here) and the much-missed Lewis Collins, the series ran for 57 action-packed episodes and made an immediate impact on British and then international audiences, which has been sustained for 35 years. Painstakingly restored from the camera-original negatives, the series could have been made yesterday. No matter how many times you have seen The Professionals,...

Martin Shaw has claimed that UK television is often too simple for viewers.
The Inspector George Gently actor said he prefers shows that encourage audiences to use their "brain power" to work out parts of the plot.
He told Pa: "I prefer the mystery to unravel bit by bit and for brain power and guesswork to be used.
"Very often there are views, shall we say, at the higher level, that want it to be plainer and more easily digested for the audience, and I tend to not like that so much.
"I think to some extent, English television has underestimated its audience for a number of years, so what both me, [Inspector George Gently co-star] Lee [Ingleby] and our directors often try to do, is to make it more, dare I say, sophisticated or challenging."
Shaw admitted that it is a "very difficult challenge to meet", as it is still important for programmes to appeal to the audience.

Actor Martin Shaw talks about working with Polanski, the dumbing-down of his profession, and the death of his fellow Professional Lewis Collins
How did you become interested in acting?
It started at school. I didn't have a healthy attitude towards education: it took me a long time to work out that I was there for me, not for my teachers. There were only two teachers I could really respond to – one taught English, the other drama. When we were doing Shakespeare, it seemed crystal-clear.
What was your big breakthrough?
In 1968, I appeared at the Royal Court in the first major revival of Look Back in Anger (1). Then I starred in several other plays there. Roman Polanski saw one and offered me the role of Banquo in his film of Macbeth. Everything took off from there.
What have you sacrificed for your art?

After a five-year battle with cancer, British actor Lewis Collins has passed away at the age of 67, reports the AP. He died peacefully at his Los Angeles-area home on Wednesday (Nov. 27).
Collins was best known for playing William Bodie in the 1970s crime drama "The Professionals" alongside Martin Shaw. Collins' Bodie was an ex-paratrooper and mercenary, a hardened yet patient agent, in sharp contrast to Shaw's Ray Doyle, who was hot-tempered and shoot-first-ask-questions-later.
Shaw released a statement upon Collins' passing: "I was very sad to hear today that Lewis has died. We spent a tough four years together in making 'The Professionals,' and shared in the production of what has become an icon of British television. He will be remembered as part of the childhood of so many people, and mourned by his fans. I send my love and condolences to his family, and the great many who will miss him.

Actor who was both heart-throb and hardman as Bodie in The Professionals
In a 1980 episode of the hit British cop show The Professionals, an ill-advised villain tries to threaten the ex-mercenary William Bodie with his snarling doberman pinscher. After a brief altercation, Bodie, all sang-froid and minimally curled lip, inquires: "Would your little dog like to chew this electric fire? Or maybe you'll just leave."
This kind of butch badinage, along with rugged good looks, helped make Lewis Collins, who played Bodie in all 57 of the show's episodes from 1977 and 1983, and who has died aged 67 after suffering from cancer, into a household name. During that time he formed one half of Britain's answer to Starsky and Hutch, a crime-fighting duo called Bodie and Doyle who worked for a shadowy criminal intelligence agency, CI5, headed by Gordon Jackson's strait-laced George Cowley. At its height, The Professionals was watched by 12 million viewers a week,...
