Lesli Linka Glatter has been re-elected president of the Directors Guild of America by acclamation of the delegates at the DGA’s Biennial National Convention in Los Angeles.
“I am thrilled to say we are as strong and united as ever before,” she said. “Together, we will continue our shared fight — along with SAG-AFTRA and the WGA — for an industry in which we are all fairly valued and celebrated for the work we do.”
“At this critical time for our industry, I am more committed than ever to our Guild’s mission of protecting the creative and economic rights of our members and working collaboratively both internally and externally on the issues affecting us all,” she said. “As we embark on the next chapter of our Guild, I’m elated to work alongside an incredibly talented, creative and diverse Board, all of whom generously volunteer their time to advocate for...

Over the weekend, a trio of big precursors announced their winners. Specifically, it was late Saturday night and the precursors in question were the Directors Guild of America, the American Society of Cinematographers, and the Annie Awards. They continue to move this season along towards its end point. There’s still some big precursors coming our way, though these were notable in their own right, especially DGA, which is one of the biggest each season. Two of the three went as expected, while one provided an upset. Read on to see which was which, and sit tight for more precursors in the final days and weeks before the big show… Of main note were Damien Chazelle continuing his all but undefeated run with a win at the DGA awards. He’s now all but a lock in Best Director at the Oscars. The Asc result was a bit surprising though,...

Awards season is really starting to heat up now with the Oscars on the horizon. They’ll take place on February 26th and a clear frontrunner is beginning to emerge in the form of La La Land. The film has been cleaning up for a while and last night, it snagged another big prize, as director Damien Chazelle took home the top honor (Best Feature Film) at the Director’s Guild of America Awards.
Though the 32-year-old faced tough competition in the form of Denis Villeneuve for Arrival, Barry Jenkins for Moonlight, Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea, and Garth Davis for Lion, he had no trouble winning over voters and is now a clear favorite as we inch closer to the Oscars. It’s well earned, too, as La La Land is truly an incredible film and Chazelle deserves all the praise he’s getting for it.

Woot woot! My pick to win Best Director at the Oscars took home the Feature Film trophy at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards. And it's truly deserving! Cuaron defied gravity, yes pun intended, to create "Gravity," a movie grounded in sci-fi realism that many directors before him (including James Cameron) were saying that it would be hard to do. But Cuaron did it, and did it extremely well! So hats off to "Gravity" and Cuaron's direction!
Here's the complete list of winners of the DGA awards and right after the jump, check out my interview with Cuaron for "Gravity" that we conducted back in October. Oh, and take a look at my interview with the lovely Sandra Bullock as well.

Updated: Gravity does not seem to be falling on the awards circuit. Alfonso Cuarón walked away with the top honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday night in Los Angeles, beating out Martin Scorsese, David O. Russell, Paul Greengrass, and Steve McQueen.
“This is truly an honor and I am humbled by it,” Cuarón said to the audience of his peers after last year’s winner Ben Affleck presented him with the award. But Gravity was not the work of just one mind, and no one knows that more keenly than Cuarón. “Directing is about the work of your collaborators,...

Ben Affleck claimed the Directors Guild of America Award for Argo on Saturday in Hollywood’s latest thumb-in-the-eye to the small group of filmmakers in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who failed to nominate him for an Oscar.
“I worked really, really hard to become the best director I could be, by putting in as hours as I can, and banging my head against a wall, berating myself, lying to myself about whether it’s going to work,” Affleck told the crowd, never mentioning the snub. “Basically, I got to a...

HollywoodNews.com:Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford today announced the DGA’s nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television and Commercials for the year 2011.
?The caliber of work being done on television these days is incredible, and our director nominees in each category are an indispensable element to the success of every project — establishing and enhancing the vision and tone, eliciting outstanding performances and furthering the narrative arc through their creative choices,? said Hackford. ?That they are able to create excellence regardless of obstacles like tighter schedules and in an environment in which audiences have more entertainment options to choose from — is a true testament to the importance of directorial skill in television.?
The winners will be announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.

Although Ari Folman's "Waltz With Bashir" did not make the shortlist of 15 films under consideration for the best documentary Oscar, it is among the nominees for the DGA's doc award, announced Friday.
"Waltz" will compete with Gonzalo Arijon's "Stranded: I've Come From a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains," in which survivors of a 1972 Andes plane crash tell their story; Elizabeth Farnsworth and Patricio Lanfranco's "The Judge and the General," a look back at the investigation into the regime of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet; Peter Gilbert & Stevie James' "At the Death House Door," an examination of the wrongful conviction of a Texas man executed for murder; and James Marsh's "Man on Wire," a study of tight-rope walker Philippe Petit.

It was yet another victory for Brokeback Mountain as Ang Lee won the Directors Guild Award for the seemingly Oscar-bound film. Lee bested fellow nominees George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), Paul Haggis (Crash), Bennett Miller (Capote) and Steven Spielberg (Munich) for the honor; it was also Lee's second DGA Award, as he had previously won in 2000 for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's yet another in a long line of Brokeback victories, as the film was the big winner at the Golden Globes (taking home four awards) and recently nabbed the Producers Guild of America award, as well as numerous critical honors. The DGA win gives Brokeback and Lee a solid lead in the Oscar race, as only six of the DGA's winners since 1949 have not won an Academy Award -- in fact, Lee's Crouching Tiger win was one of the exceptions, as the Best Director Oscar in 2000 went to Steven Soderbergh for Traffic. Academy Award nominations will be announced Tuesday. The DGA also gave Clint Eastwood (last year's winner for Million Dollar Baby) a Lifetime Achievement Award, and picked Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) for their documentary award, though surprisingly, the film didn't made the short list for the Best Documentary Oscar. The DGA also gave out awards for television -- here's the entire list of winners: Feature Film: Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain Documentary: Werner Herzog, Grizzly Man Dramatic TV series: Michael Apted, Rome Comedy TV series: Marc Buckland, My Name Is Earl Television movie: Joseph Sargent (Warm Springs) and George C. Wolfe (Lackawanna Blues) Reality TV show: Tony Croll (Three Wishes) and J.
