In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Stacy Title’s infamous urban legend adaptation, The Bye Bye Man. From Cropsey to Bloody Mary, several horror icons have been inspired by modern folklore. To me, the most interesting part of these naturally formed bogeymen is how their mythology has no single author, as these […]

Who will be included for the special “In Memoriam” segment for Sunday night’s Oscars 2021 ceremony? With last year’s Academy Awards happening over 14 months ago, it means an even larger number of film veterans have died. Producers will hopefully be offering a longer remembrance and not leaving out people for the sake of time.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stacy Title died today after a three-year battle with Als, her longtime manager, producing partner and friend Dannie Festa confirmed to Deadline. She was 56.
Title, whose father was a commercial producer, grew up in New York. She entered the business with a splash: Title’s first produced work, the 1993 short film Down on the Waterfront, earned an Oscar nomination in 1994. The same year, she made her feature directorial debut with The Last Supper starring Cameron Diaz.
Title started gravitating toward the horror genre with 1999’s Let the Devil Wear Black, which she also co-wrote, and the 2006 Snoop Dogg’s Hood of Horror, until she found success with the 2017 The Bye Bye Man.
But just as big opportunities started opening for Title — in 2017, she also made her episodic directing debut with Freakish — tragedy struck.

“Pet Sematary director Mary Lambert is attached to helm an adaptation of Mira Grant’s mermaid thriller “Rolling in the Deep” for Branded Pictures Entertainment, Variety has learned exclusively.
Sean Hood, whose credits include Conan the Barbarian and Halloween: Resurrection, will adapt the novel, published in 2015. The story revolves around an idealistic young filmmaker who sets out to the Mariana Trench with a small crew to film a faux documentary about mermaids. But the hoax soon turns real as sailors begin to disappear and the filmmaker realizes that they are under siege by actual mermaids. A fight to survive at any cost ensues.
“‘Rolling in the Deep’ is a film led by complicated badass female characters,” Lambert said. “I’ve been waiting to make a film like this my entire career. Our mermaids are not cliché sugary cartoon princesses; they will take you down if you stand in their way.

It's been perhaps the most prolific year yet for female-directed horror films, and it couldn't come at a better time.
It started with Agnieszka Smoczynska's The Lure, an oddball horror gem about flesh-eating mermaids singing backup in a Polish dance-punk band that dropped in U.S. theaters this year and can now be enjoyed on Blu-ray thanks to The Criterion Collection. It's neither popular nor mainstream, according to its box office receipts. It's significant, though, as one of 2017's first women-helmed horror movies right out the gate, following Anna Foerster's Underworld: Blood Wars and Stacy Title's The Bye Bye Man; The...

Looks like it’s one and done for Kong: Skull Island‘s Jordan Vogt-Roberts after the director all but ruled himself out of future installments in the MonsterVerse.
Appearing on the latest episode of Screen Junkies News (via Screen Rant), the filmmaker hinted that he’s ready to spend some time away from Hollywood’s blockbuster scene and the MonsterVerse in particular. That’s understandable, really, particularly when you consider the fact that Skull Island heralded Vogt-Roberts’ first true crack at a big-budget production. The end result was an entertaining, if flawed resurrection of cinema’s great ape, and while the director is clearly looking forward to some downtime far, far away from Legendary’s newly-formed world of gods and monsters, Jordan Vogt-Roberts was wary of ruling himself out of the equation entirely when it comes to 2020’s Godzilla Vs.

‘King Kong Skull Island’ will be a diverse, female-led series for the small screen.
Kong is big, both in terms of size as well as success, with this year’s Kong: Skull Island having grossed over half a billion dollars. But now, the giant ape-like monster is set to appear on the small screen. Mars Vista Entertainment and Im Global Television are working together to bring the first live-action TV series on Kong. The series will be based on a combination of Merian C. Cooper’s 1933 King Kong and Devito Artworks’ Skull Island, and will imaginatively be called King Kong Skull Island.
The originality doesn’t end with the show’s title, either, since King Kong Skull Island is the first live-action television programme in the Kong Universe. While there have already been three animated TV series on the same topic, the show creates a purpose for itself in that the Kong live-action TV series hasn’t...

Kong: Skull Island came out this past March, the second part of the MonsterVerse which also includes 2014's Godzilla. The film wasn't a smash hit, but still a success, raking in $550 million worldwide so far, on a budget of $185 million. Not bad for a March release without "Batman" or "Superman" in the title. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is up next in 2019, with Godzilla Vs. Kong following the next year in 2020. Besides all that, no Kong solo-sequel has been announced, but now it looks like television may be the place to continue the story started in Skull Island.

Though Kong lay dormant in the bowels of Hollywood for almost a decade – the last time cinema’s great ape swung onto the silver screen, Peter Jackson was behind the lens – Legendary resurrected the beast in truly epic fashion thanks to last month’s Kong: Skull Island.

It’s where some people keep their keys, money, or a good book, but the nightstand drawer in director Stacy Title’s The Bye Bye Man holds something far more sinister than spare change. When spoken aloud, what’s carved into its wooden surface has the ability to scare your soul and scar your psyche, so it’s a shame that the film featuring this frightening piece of furniture—and the entity it unleashes—doesn’t live up to its promising potential.
Seeking a home of their own after surviving the dorms at their Wisconsin university, lifelong best friends Elliot (Douglas Smith) and John (Lucien Laviscount) move into an old house that’s farther away from campus, but much closer to future horrors. Joining them in their eerie abode is Elliot’s girlfriend, Sasha (Cressida Bonas), giving their living situation a Three’s Company vibe. One night, Elliot discovers “The Bye Bye Man...

MaryAnn’s quick take… One of the most inept films I’ve ever seen. Cheaply made, poorly directed, badly acted, oddly edited, and ultimately insultingly stupid. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of most mainstream horror movies
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So, three university students in Madison, Wisconsin, rent an absurdly large and ridiculously rambling off-campus house. Inside is a haunted night table — that’s right, I said “haunted night table” — that summons the most feeble boogeyman horror movies have ever seen. He’s called the Bye Bye Man, and he’s like Slender Man without the catchy memes. He drops coins on the floor, makes you hear the sound of a train in the distance, scratches up your walls, and — this is the eeriest bit of all — he makes...

Every Friday the 13th, Mammon demands another teenbait horrorshow with which to befoul multiplexes. Here we find former indie spirit Stacy Title (Let the Devil Wear Black) schlocking out, possibly explaining the incongruous Rilke quotations and alt-rock T-shirts adorning this otherwise artless shambles, a Candyman shorn of all subtexts. Three blandies install themselves in ominously spacious student digs and – after aeons of poking about that suggest Scream never happened – inadvertently summon the titular fiend, a Poundland Voldemort whose name spawns a handy dual-action mantra-cum-strapline: “Don’t think it, don’t say it.” (To which some wag has doubtless already appended “Don’t see it.”)

In theaters today courtesy of Stx Entertainment is The Bye Bye Man, which was directed by Stacy Title and stars Douglas Smith, Doug Jones, Carrie-Anne Moss, Faye Dunaway, and Leigh Whannell. Daily Dead had a chance to catch up briefly with Title this week, and she discussed what she initially saw in the project, her approach to collaborating with her husband and writer for The Bye Bye Man, Jonathan Penner, and her unique cast of familiar faces and newcomers.
I’d love to start off by hearing what it was in the story of The Bye Bye Man that drew you in. The concept of this figure basically being the physical embodiment of evil is an interesting one to explore.

The concept behind The Bye Bye Man hits too close to home. The Bye Bye Man's Carrie-Ann Moss and Douglas Smith talk about why they were freaked out while reading the script, and why they didn't want to utter the boogeyman's name. Director Stacy Title and producer Trevor Macy explain why this horror movie stands out among other films in the genre.

A horror movie slated to open in October means buzz and solid expectations. It used to be you rarely saw the genre at any other time — back before studios discovered how cheap they were to produce and how palatable they were to teens looking for something to do on a Friday night whether it proved enjoyably worthwhile or not. Securing this coveted spot was therefore a win for Stx Entertainment and their film The Bye Bye Man, either through hard work or sheer luck. Watching it shift up from October 14th, 2016 to June 3rd may have even been a testament to its success until yet another shuffle to January 13th, 2017. Don’t let the connotations Friday the 13th conjures fool you. The Bye Bye Man was dumped.

You only have to utter his name aloud once – so much more efficient than that Candyman guy! "Don't think it, don't say it," folks will tell you – it's a bit of a mantra, this phrase – but once the idea takes hold of you, it's hard not let the bogeyman's handle slip off your lips. It was rough for a Madison, Wisconsin journalist in 1969, who mentioned the moniker to some folks and ended up massacring his suburban neighbors. And decades later, it's hard for Elliot (Douglas Smith), a college student who...

The year is off to a strange start, even at the box office. Last weekend saw “Hidden Figures” win in a rare race among three titles for the top spot, but this weekend looks even more complicated. Multiple films will vie for no. 1 — and “Rogue One” isn’t one of them.
Among last weekend’s top grossers, the only one in the hunt is “Hidden Figures.” It will likely will drop to the high teens, and the most likely challenger is the first national expansion of “Patriots Day.” There will also bean even wider break for the major crossover success that is “La La Land,” with “Live By Night” and “Silence” also expanding, if to considerably less effect.
Three new films will open with Paramount’s “Monster Trucks,” Stx’s “Bye Bye Man,” and Open Road’s “Sleepless.” All told, that’s seven films moving into more theaters, a traffic...

While the idea of an entire movie about people getting killed for saying its title isn’t the easiest sell, “The Bye Bye Man” rises above those low expectations. The husband and wife team of director Stacy Title and screenwriter Jonathan Penner (“The Last Supper,” “Let The Devil Wear Black”) don’t break any rules, but they still manage to deliver an effective genre effort.
After a suburban husband goes on a rifling killing spree in the Pantone-colored past, we meet modern day Elliott (Douglas Smith) and Sasha (Cressida Bonas) as they sign a lease on a dilapidated brick dwelling big enough to contain their enormous love. It’s a fixer upper, and though they wonder why it’s so affordable, they’re too thrilled by the prospect of playing house to care. They find a stockpile of antique furniture down in the basement, and a few scary basement things happen,...

“The Bye Bye Man” sounds like a hooky three-minute ditty a Brill Building songwriter might have come up with in the 60s. But as presented in this slapdash serving of January horror, the title is no ear candy; it’s a name not to be sung, mentioned, heard, or imagined, or else you’ll go mad just thinking about what this nasty spirit is going to do to you. Director Stacy Title’s (“The Last Supper”) bid for obsession-possession spookiness and boogeyman scares succumbs to the usual genre pitfalls: loud and empty shocks, monotony, and talk-explain-talk-explain scenes that drain the movie of any ghoulish.

Launching a new horror franchise is almost always a heavy lift, but several memorable properties have been successfully introduced over the past few years and so far show little sign of fading, including the Insidious, Purge and Conjuring/Annabelle series. The Bye Bye Man apparently seeks to join this group, but by attempting to lay claim to the iconic Friday the 13th release date sets the bar at a challenging height.

Composers Andy Grush and Taylor Stewart, aka The Newton Brothers, score Stx Entertainment’s supernatural horror thriller, The Bye Bye Man.
The film stars Douglas Smith, Lucien Laviscount, Cressida Bonas and Doug Jones. Directed by Stacy Title and written by Jonathan Penner, “The Bye Bye Man” follows the story of three college students move into an old, off-campus house. They quickly find themselves hunted by a supernatural entity called The Bye Bye Man who may be responsible for possessing various people and causing them to commit killing sprees throughout recent history. The students discover the origins of the Bye Bye Man and find that there is only one way to avoid his curse: don’t say or think his name, because once the Bye Bye Man gets inside your head, he takes control.
Bye Bye Man opens in theatres on January 13, 2016. The soundtrack album featuring the score is available on Sony Classical.

I know, January is usually a real dumping ground for films. That’s normally true, but if you look hard enough, you can find worthwhile titles hitting screens. This year is no exception, as 2017 has a handful of pretty strong movies hitting in its first month. I can personally vouch for a couple that I’ve seen already, so there’s that. Your mileage may vary with these, but if you look hard enough, you’re sure to find a few things to enjoy. Without any further delay though, here are the first batch of 2017 titles that don’t appear to be wastes of time. At least one is legitimately great too… Here now are ten January releases in particular to look forward to: 10. Detour – An unusual film noir that I had split feelings about when I saw it at the Tribeca Film Festival, this is still an independent title worth making note of.
