With the May 31 Emmys eligibility cutoff almost exactly one month away, Emmys-related action is picking up.
On April 22, Ryan Seacrest, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan came out for a screening and reception in Hollywood on behalf of ABC’s American Idol. Meanwhile, in New York, Peter Morgan, creator and principal writer of Netflix’s The Crown, was feted at the opening of his new Broadway play Patriots. And that same night, FX’s Shōgun had a well-received series — or season? — finale. (The following evening its lead actress, Anna Sawai, sat down with yours truly at Chapman University to record an episode of THR’s Awards Chatter podcast.)
On April 24, Max toasted the third season of Hacks (which debuts on May 2) with a party at the Chateau Marmont attended by the show’s creators and stars, including Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. And at the same time,...

When Nicole Kidman was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award, she spent a large portion of her speech thanking the directors whom she’s worked with throughout the years. The respect for the job, though, doesn’t she mean has any desire to step behind the camera herself.
“I feel like I would be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night on the AFI red carpet, noting that a producer’s duties much more align with her interests. “I’m very good at being passionate and supporting the voices and reading a script and going, ‘I love this script,’ or seeing somebody and going, ‘I love this actor, I love this director, how do I support them?’ And they maybe have done nothing [before], but I want to get behind them.

“I think it was Andy Warhol who said, “Make art and let others decide whether it is good or bad. But while they are deciding, make some more”.
That was the line with which Nicole Kidman ended her 15-minute acceptance speech after Meryl Streep had presented her with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award.
That is something that seems entirely appropriate for Kidman, who doesn’t seem to stop “making art,” taking risks at every turn, telling stories through her power not just as an actor, but also a producer dedicated to bringing those stories to screens big and small. At 56, she is on the younger side of the previous 48 recipients of this very high honor, the first Australian to receive it. Nicole Kidman was honored with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award on Saturday night, as an A-list group of her friends and collaborators looked back on her long Hollywood career.
Reese Witherspoon, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts, Zoe Saldaña, Aaron Sorkin, Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Joey King, Mike Myers and husband Keith Urban all took the Dolby Theatre stage throughout the event to pay tribute to Kidman. To close out the evening, Meryl Streep presented her with the award.
Streep — joking after a clip was shown, “did anyone notice that [costume designer] Ann Roth gave her my nose in The Hours? You’re welcome” — took the time to reflect on working opposite Kidman in season two of Big Little Lies.
“For me, the very, very hardest part of being incessantly called the greatest actress of my generation,” Streep teased as the audience roared, throwing her hand theatrically over her head, “What is the hardest part?...

All "Game of Thrones" fans know the words Valar Morghulis, a Valyrian saying for "All men must die." That phrase almost proved prophetic when it came to HBO's attempts to whittle down the many spin-off shows at various stages in development over the years. Although "House of the Dragon" survived the culling to earn a second season, several others -- the Jon Snow-centric series, an untitled prequel starring Naomi Watts (which actually filmed a full pilot episode before being scrapped), and even a show set in the slums of King's Landing, Flea Bottom -- were doomed to the chopping block.
One of the more fascinating concepts, however, involved a famous figure from Westerosi history known as Nymeria. Titled "Ten Thousand Ships", this, too, never coalesced and we've never known why. Calista Flockhart has reflected on her time in the title role of hit legal drama Ally McBeal, saying she “felt on trial” herself in the media.
Flockhart played the part of McBeal in the series that ran for five seasons between 1997 and 2002, and increasingly focused on the romantic lives of the lead characters.
Despite, or because of, its popularity with viewers, the show became a litmus paper for commentary in the media, with Time magazine suggesting that it signified the “death of feminism” with the female cast members’ short skirts and slim figures.
Flockhart told The Times of London that what had started out as “creating something really special” then “went to s**t” with all the scrutiny of her character’s appearance and obsession with her biological clock, symbolised by the vision of a dancing baby. She recalled:
“My short skirts, allegedly the death of feminism and, of course,...

A couple months ago, we learned that The Devil’s Bath – the latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge – had been acquired by Shudder, with the streaming service planning to release it in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime this summer. Now we know the exact release date. The Devil’s Bath will be available to stream on Shudder as of June 28th.
The Devil’s Bath – which has been described as “utterly harrowing”, “chilling”, and “impactful” – is a German-language film that is set in 1750 Austria, at a time when villages were surrounded by deep forests. There, a deeply religious woman has married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day,...

“Godzilla” may be 70 years old, but it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
At the 96th Academy Awards last month, “Godzilla Minus One” became the first “Godzilla” movie to ever win an Oscar. The 37th entry in the franchise, the Japanese “Minus One” took home the trophy for Best Visual Effects. In fact, it was the first “Godzilla” film ever nominated by the academy in any category.
Talk about being overdue. The question now becomes … can “Godzilla” strike again next year?
As you’re reading this, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” continues to destroy at the box office for Warner Bros. Its domestic receipts have passed $150 million. Worldwide, its grosses are well over $430 million and counting. The sequel to 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” its reviews have been somewhat mixed. Many critics have compared it negatively to last year’s acclaimed “Godzilla Minus One,” which scored an impressive 98% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the post “Game of Thrones” era, HBO notoriously put seemingly dozens of shows into development, trying to capture lightning in a bottle again. One of them, starring Naomi Watts, even shot a pilot but was scrapped and not picked up. Writer’s rooms were put together, and screenwriters and directors tried to map out all kinds of ideas.

The number of Gold Derby readers predicting the 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations in 16 major categories has risen above 2,000 even with the nominations announcement still three months away. Our predicted lineups have changed significantly within the last week alone, indicating increased support for some programs and greater apathy toward others.
Four new predicted acting nominees have emerged since April 1. The only one hailing from a continuing series is Theo James (“The Gentlemen”), who grabbed the fifth comedy lead actor spot from Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”). The other three are TV movie star Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”) and limited series actresses Anna Sawai (lead; “Shōgun”) and Fiona Shaw (supporting; “True Detective: Night Country”) who displace Michael Douglas (“Franklin”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Andrea Riseborough (“The Regime”) respectively.

Tom Holland ventured into the entertainment business at a young age. Before transitioning to film, he built a career in theatre. His first significant stage role was the titular character in the West End production of the coming-of-age musical Billy Elliot the Musical in 2008. He previously starred as the best friend of the protagonist.
Tom Holland in The Crowded Room
The turning point in Holland’s acting career came in 2012 when he worked with Naomi Watts in the disaster drama film The Impossible. Three years later, he had his breakthrough in Hollywood with his portrayal of Peter Parker and his alter-ego Marvel superhero Spider-Man.
It is a role that he has played numerous times. While fans do not seem to have gotten enough of the actor in the Spidey suit, recent Madame Web concept art featuring him is not something they seemed to be eager about.

While many companies were affected by shortages brought on by Covid-19’s disruption, some may not be top of mind when it comes to everyday commerce. Enter filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, whose latest work Spermworld depicts the evolution of sperm banks. There’s been high interest from potential parents for receiving the male sperm, and the limited regulations of in-person sperm banks (e.g. donors can’t give their sperm to more than 25 or 30 families) have made donors run their business online. After contributing to the New York Times article The Sperm Kings Have a Problem: Too Much Demand, Oppenheim has now crafted a mind-boggling moving-image companion piece with backing from the outlet.

Ron Nyswaner will soon be traveling to New York to reunite with his Writers Guild of America East fellows for a grand occasion. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and showrunner has been selected to receive the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on April 14.
The honor — named after the late screenwriter who was blacklisted for his political views only to persevere and get his career back on track with such credits as Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough and Yanks — is presented to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity,” per the organization.
Nyswaner has been doing that for pretty much his entire career. A prime example is Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia. Penned by Nyswaner, the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starrer was the first major Hollywood film to dramatize the real-world...

A new miniseries has been announced, and it looks fantastic.
We look at the cast list. What do we see? Oh, another show starring Nicole Kidman. Or Jake Lacy. Or Kate Winslet. Or Betty Gilpin.
You get the idea.
Look, we get it. A miniseries has limited episodes to make an impact, and a recognizable name can be a big draw.
Since it's become commonplace for renowned movie actors to make the move to television, particularly miniseries, why wouldn't a studio jump on the chance to nab a big name?
It's a winning formula -- literally.
Nicole Kidman is an Oscar winner. What television producer wouldn't want her attached to their project?
She's also snagged a couple of Emmys for her work on HBO's Big Little Lies. She's proven her worth as a TV star.
The same can be said about Kate Winslet, who similarly made the jump from movies to television.

Parting is such sweet sorrow, particularly when it comes to Emmy voters. In recent years, the TV academy has given goodbye hugs to four Best Drama Series contenders for their final seasons: “Succession” (2023), “Game of Thrones” (2019), “Breaking Bad” (2014) and “The Sopranos” (2007). The only other dramas to land on this farewell list all hail from many decades ago: “Upstairs, Downstairs” (1977), “Elizabeth R” (1972), “The Bold Ones: The Senator” (1971) and “Playhouse 90” (1960). Will “The Crown” now become the ninth such program at the upcoming 2024 Emmys?
According to Gold Derby’s early Emmy odds, “The Crown” is way out front to win Best Drama Series for its sixth and final season. Rounding out the likely Top 8 nominees are “The Morning Show,” “The Gilded Age,” “Slow Horses,” “Loki,” “3 Body Problem,” “The Curse” and “Sugar.” Netflix notably split up the last episodes of “The Crown” into two parts — the first part streamed November 16 and dealt...

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.

The last scandalous reveal in Ryan Murphy’s docudrama “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” was far more surprising than any of the gossip-filled tales penned by Truman Capote (played by Tom Hollander). The final twist came 32 years after his death when a longtime confidant, Joanne Carson (played in the drama by Molly Ringwald), decided to auction off the writer’s remains to the highest bidder.
In the finale, the last moments of Capote’s life show him floating in and out of consciousness. Excommunicated from New York, after penning several stories exposing his socialite friends’ darkest secrets, and banished to Los Angeles, Capote seeks refuge in the home of Carson. And it is in that room that Capote takes his last breaths, asking for his mother and “beautiful babe,” aka Barbara Paley (played by Naomi Watts).

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans Episode 8, “Phantasm Forgiveness.”] Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans reached its bittersweet conclusion in the finale episode, “Phantasm Forgiveness,” as Truman Capote’s (Tom Hollander) light is extinguished. Unable to resolve his various feuds with the remaining titular swans — Slim (Diane Lane), Lee (Calista Flockhart), and C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny) — Truman decides to occupy a fantasy world in which he offers up forgiveness in exchange for acceptance from his former confidantes. While Babe (Naomi Watts) is no longer there to provide him with such a fantasy, given that she died in the prior episode, that lingering regret eats at him along with the ghost of his mother, played by the deliciously vicious Jessica Lange. By the episode’s end, Truman has died and his ashes are being sold at auction. As the ghosts of his swans watch on, there’s a funeral feeling to it all. As...

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

[This story contains spoilers from episode seven of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.]
American socialite and former magazine editor Babe Paley was married to CBS founder William S. Paley for 31 years. But according to Naomi Watts, who portrays her in Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, her relationship with Truman Capote was the deepest romance she’d ever had — minus the sex.
“Babe gave herself to this man and all of her secrets,” Watts tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. “She really trusted him, thinking they were such close friends that he would never dare to expose them.”
It’s for that reason Capote’s actions led to Paley “just [coming] undone,” the star and executive producer had explained earlier in the season to reporters, including THR. As shown in the second season of the FX anthology series, Capote (played by Tom Hollander) reveals the most intimate details of the lives of Paley and the...

“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” pits the incendiary author Truman Capote against a “gaggle” of New York socialites, but there is one “swan” that is truly at the heart of the roost, namely, Babe Paley, played by Naomi Watts. Since Babe is the closest of all the women to the writer, his betrayal of the group in 1975 in his scathing “Esquire” excerpt from his unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” hits her the hardest, and the other swans rally to her defense to ice the “In Cold Blood” scribe out of the upper echelons of society.
What makes the relationship between Babe and Truman so compelling—in addition to the performances of Watts and Tom Hollander—is how much we see of their friendship blossoming. The entire opening sequence of the season shows Capote comforting and strategizing with Babe over how to handle the latest and most disgraceful of her husband Bill’s (Treat Williams) infidelities.
