Film musicals. You love them or you hate them. Your cringe-o-meter pings into the red or your heart swells with joy, and I’m not convinced there’s any in-between. There once was a time, though, when a simple tune had the ability to stitch itself into the cultural fabric for anyone and everyone. What’s changed?
In recent years, we’ve been served the hip-hop-infused, cultural soup of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and In the Heights, the chart music bombast of The Greatest Showman, even stabs at nostalgia via Disney reboots and the Golden Era homage La La Land, the inevitable Broadway adaptation of which was announced last week. They tell good stories, have high-budget productions, and rake it in at the box office. At the centre of it all, though, I’m not convinced I hear any truly timeless melodies to be remembered or rebooted for the years to come.

Michael Bublé is the leading man in his new music video for single “I’ll Never Not Love You.” Directed by Andrew Donoho, the clip features Bublé and his wife, Luisana Lopilato, recreating memorable scenes from several iconic romantic comedies.
Paying tribute to classics like Love, Actually, The Notebook, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Casablanca, and Jerry Maguire, many of the video’s scenes are near-exact replicas of the original films. The singer has fittingly dubbed the clip a “cinematic love letter to the movies.”

Predicting the nominees for Best Original Song at the Oscars is made more difficult by the three-stage process. In years past, many seemingly sure-fire contenders were deemed to be ineligible. Even those ditties that clear this hurdle then have to pass muster with the nearly 400 members members of the music branch of the academy. In recent years, upwards of 75 songs have been in the running. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Original Song.)
To be even eligible for consideration, a tune must meet these criteria:
It must be an original song with words and music, both of which were original and written specifically for the film;
It must be the result of a creative interaction between the filmmaker(s) and the songwriter(s) who have been engaged to work directly on the film; and
There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually...

A version of this story about John Legend first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Before he ever wrote a song for the documentary “Giving Voice,” John Legend was involved as an executive producer through his company, Get Lifted. But Legend, who won an Oscar for the song “Glory” from “Selma,” has learned by now that when he comes on board the production of a film, another subject will eventually come up.
“Whenever we get involved, there’s a conversation around the music,” he said. “It isn’t always the case that I make a song for a movie that we produce, but often that’s part of my collaboration with the filmmaker.”
And in the case of “Giving Voice,” Legend knew that he wanted to have his own voice in the film about high schoolers from around the country who participate in the annual August Wilson monologue competition,...

Our lives would suck without Kelly Clarkson. The pop singer known for her powerful pipes was introduced to us in the first season of “American Idol” on Fox in 2002, launching a career that spans the 21st century. She won that competition, but what are the best songs she has recorded since then? Scroll down to see how we rank her greatest hits. Do you agree with our pick for her number-one song of all time?
In the years since Clarkson’s “Idol” coronation, the show has been inconsistent in delivering artists with lasting music careers, though standouts like Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson have also stood the test of time. Clarkson was actually the first “Idol” alum to win a Grammy, claiming Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (“Since U Been Gone”) and Best Pop Album (“Breakaway”) in 2006. She also claimed Best Pop Album for “Stronger” in 2013. And that album’s...

With the delayed release of “No Time to Die,” the 25th film of the James Bond franchise, an avalanche of changes and shifts have occurred within the industry. In the realm of awards prognostication, the Billie Eilish song was considered one of the favorites in the best original song category.
With the 18-year-old music sensation out of the running now, possible contenders in the category are still emerging, with no real frontrunner as yet. Netflix’s animated feature “Over the Moon” offers a formidable contender with “Rocket to the Moon.” Sung by newcomer Cathy Ang, and written by Christopher Curtis, Marjorie Duffield and Helen Park, the song could net the streamer its third nomination in this category. Netflix scored with “Mighty River” from 2017’s “Mudbound” and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” (David Rawlings and Gillian Welch). On Monday, Katy Perry released her first-ever holiday music video, “Cozy Little Christmas.” The clip, helmed by directing duo Watts, features the pop star getting cozy with none other than Saint Nick himself — alongside a cast of classic stop-motion holiday characters — in a sunny L.A. ranch home.
Why have a white Christmas when you can lounge poolside and get a massage from a reindeer?
Perry released the song “Cozy Little Christmas” last year as an Amazon Prime exclusive. She co-wrote and co-produced the track with past collaborators Greg Wells and Ferras Alqaisi.

If you ever want a shot at writing a hit song with Keith Urban, you’d better know he has one giant turnoff. Don’t ever say, “Let’s write a hit song.”

Then again, maybe it just goes without saying. After all, he has writing credit for nine of his 21 chart-toppers, including his latest, “Wasted Time.”

The Goo Goo Dolls have been around for what seems like forever, six years before I was born to be exact! And yet, in their 27 year run without hiatus, they have gathered 14 top ten singles, sold over 10 million albums, and had their hit-song “Iris” top Billboard’s Top 100 songs of 1992-2012. In other words, this band has the credentials to scare any Belieber away.
With the release of “Magnetic” on June 11 (their tenth studio album) the Goo Goo Dolls are back, and in many ways better than they have been for quite some time. While not a massive change from the tried-and-tested formula of soft pop rock, Johnny Rzeznik and co. have produced a catchy, meaningful and emotionally upbeat record. The band chose to work with three different producers, Gregg Wattenberg, John Shanks and Greg Wells in order to get a very unique sound for each track.

Adam Lambert recently shared some major news to his Glamberts through his official Twitter page. "My album is called Trespassing," posted Lambert. The "For Your Entertainment" hitmaker announced he will release it in spring 2012, and then asked his fans to spread the news by making it one of the trending topics, "Let's trend it Glamberts! #Trespassing."
A few hours earlier, Lambert teased his followers by writing, "Big announcement tomorrow!! :)." The boyfriend of Sauli Koskinen gave a clue, "It's about the Album and the single!!" He, however, wouldn't tell everything in one day. "Ok..... I will tell you all one thing today and one thing tomorrow.... :) since you all asked so nicely," he wrote.
Lambert initially planned to announce the single first. "Ok.... In a couple minutes I will tell you the name of the first single!!!" so he informed his followers before changing his mind and clarifying it in another tweet.

Katy Perry rose to the top of the charts with songs about kissing girls, Vegas vacations gone awry and how awesome "California Gurls" are. So, when fans pop Teenage Dream into their boom boxes, they might be surprised to hear Perry show her vulnerable side on the song "Pearl." The ballad is about an outgoing, strong young woman who lets a guy "keep her in the dark." The catch, at the end, is that Perry is actually singing about herself.
The singer admitted that by the time she started working on "Pearl," her album was nearly complete. But, it was missing something. So she headed back into the studio to work on the track. And she thinks it finishes her record in just the right way.

Perry, 25, has co-written each of the 12 songs on Teenage Dream, due for release in the UK on August 30. Five of the album's tracks have been produced by Swedish hitmakers Dr Luke and Max Martin - including Perry's recent chart-topper 'California Gurls' and her new single 'Teenage Dream' - while Christopher 'Tricky' Stewart has helmed three. Greg Wells and Norwegian duo Stargate have produced two tracks apiece. The Teenage Dream songwriting and production credits in full: 'Teenage Dream'

Ahead of "Teenage Dream" U.S. release on August 24, Katy Perry brought forward two more fresh materials from the album. One is titled "Peacock" which she showcased live when performing at MTV World Stage in Malaysia, the other is called "Not Like the Movies" which she released on iTunes.
Although both tracks are included in the summer release, they have quite different vibe on the hook. "Peacock" produced by Stargate is a club track with provocative lyrics such as "Come on baby, lemme see/ What you're hiding underneath," while Greg Wells-produced "Not Like the Movies" is a ballad track with emotional lines about finding a true love.
Beside gearing up to release a new album, Katy Perry is also preparing a music video for the title track of the effort. In this upcoming clip, the 25-year-old pop singer will share screen with Josh Kloss, locking lips and frolicking with him in the beach.

Adam Lambert visited his pal Ellen DeGeneres on January 26 to help her celebrate her 52nd birthday. The "American Idol" alum performed live with his band, delivering "Strut" which is written by him with the help from Kara DioGuardi and Greg Wells.
At the end of the performance, Adam handed a special signed picture of him to the talk show host to be auctioned for Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. Moreover, the openly gay singer also gave a signed underwear which he claimed "a bit sweaty" to raise fund for the cause. The auction reportedly will end in the first week of February with the current bid price for the underwear is over 2,000 dollars.
In addition to Adam Lambert, Ellen DeGeneres also welcomed Harry Connick Jr. and Will Arnett as her guests on the Tuesday show. In a video montage prepared by her show's staff, she received birthday wishes from such celebrities as Jeff Bridges,...

'It's more about letting it all hang out in the spirit of self-empowerment,' singer says of track on For Your Entertainment.

Adam Lambert is certainly a confident performer, so when the time came to write songs for his debut LP, For Your Entertainment, he wanted to capture that confidence on record. The "Idol" runner-up sat down with judge Kara DioGuardi, and the pair decided that the best way to describe Lambert's swagger was with a single word: strut.
But as the two were writing the song, they realized that it meant so much more than that. "Like with Kara, for example, we wrote 'Strut' together with Greg Wells, and the idea of strut was actually her concept," Lambert told MTV News. "I told him I wanted to do a song that was real glam-rock."

The holiday season is upon us, which means that it's time to put the Bob Dylan Christmas album on your iPod, hit up your local mall to fight with other shoppers and gorge yourself on marzipan snowmen. Everybody celebrates this period differently, but for Katy Perry, the Christmas season is about dressing up in a sexy Santa outfit and treating fans in Austria to one of her traditionally balls-out concerts. After spending time snowboarding with boyfriend Russell Brand at the Silvretta Arena Ischgl-Samnaun ski resort, she took the stage in Ischgl and performed for 20,000 fans on Sunday night (November 29).
The show, which was the season-opening celebration for the resort, featured a hit-packed set and all of Perry's usual assortment of live gimmicks (including a giant glowing heart). The stage also had a pair of cannons re-creating the conditions outside the venue. "I hadn't realized they would have canons blasting snow...

Adam Lambert has become talk of the town since participating on "American Idol" season 8. Through his signature powerful voice, the singer who always applies fingernail polish and eye make-up on every occasion has won music lovers' heart.
When losing the first position to fellow participant Kris Allen, Adam stays positive and insists that "first or second, it doesn't matter" to him. What really important is "about tomorrow" when he records his debut album and showcases it to his fans, so he said.
Adam releases his major-label debut album "For Your Entertainment" via 19 recordings/RCA on November 23, one day after performing at 2009 American Music Awards. In this album, he does not only take the duty as a singer but also takes the chance to co-write several songs with the likes of Kara DioGuardi and Greg Wells.

Dye your hair with Kool-Aid and start joking about cutting, because 30-second snippets of Allison Iraheta's major label debut Just Like You have hit the web. Everybody knows I was less-than-thrilled with the super-poppy, heavily-processed vocals of Iraheta's Max Martin-produced single "Friday I'll Be Over U." But will the rest of her album make me happy? Let's go through these too-short snippets and see.
» "Friday I'll Be Over U"
This.
» "Robot Love"
In this pulsating electro-pop ditty (which samples Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part II"), Iraheta is pissed that her boyfriend is in love with a robot. Whether said robot is an actual lady cyborg or just an iPhone is to be determined. Also Tbd? Whether this song will have a discernible melody. We're on track two and I'm already thinking "filler?" Ruh-roh.
» "Just Like You"
Good news: I'm finally hearing Allison's voice without a bunch of studio trickery around it.

I've added a new subset to my overwhelming American Idol addiction, and it focuses solely on the contestants of season 8! Indeed, thanks to the vocal firepower of Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, and Allison Iraheta (not to mention Anoop Desai, #signmattgiraud, Mishavonna Henson, and Deanna Brown), there's so much news and music and awesomeness making its way to the Internet that some days I barely have time to get out of my pajamas. (For the record, I type this clad in Old Navy sleep bottoms and a promotional jersey I received from the publicist for Fox's Brothers, a show I have never seen.

Let the rock-off begin! Just days after the track listing and 30-second samples of Adam Lambert's For Your Entertainment were revealed, the tracks and talent roster for fellow "American Idol" alum Allison Iraheta's Just Like You have been unveiled. The list of familiar contributors to the album suggests that while Iraheta is digging into her rock roots, she's also seriously indulging her pop side as well.
Like Lambert, Iraheta tapped "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi for some songwriting help for the LP, due out December 1. Kara penned "No One Else" with Pink (listed by her birth name, Alecia Moore) and Grammy-nominated producer/writer Greg Wells (Katy Perry, OneRepublic, Kelly Clarkson), who also contributed to Lambert's album.

It's been an active couple of days for Katy Perry: She celebrated her birthday with the help of Russell Brand and Taylor Swift on Saturday (October 24), and today it's possible she celebrated the official "Amtv" premiere of "Starstruckk," the new video from 3Oh!3 that features Perry both on the song and in the clip. It's an excellent slice of jittery, dance-infused alt-pop that gets a very nice boost from Perry's presence. The whole clip revolves around a large public fountain and features a handful of slow-motion shots of busty models, but the most eye-catching female is Perry herself, who dances with the 3Oh!3 guys while wearing some sort of strange leotard, and changes into a strange pink and black dress for a frolic in the fountain herself.

Growing up in Manhattan, the annual Cmj Festival was always a staple, providing a lot of fun gigs in between Yom Kippur and Halloween. This year's Cmj has kind of been a bummer — or maybe everyone who used to be really psyched about Cmj is getting old and boring. But there are still good acts to be seen!
One of which is another born-and-bred Manhattanite, Samuel. Samuel played on Wednesday night (October 21) at the party hosted by Spin magazine (along with the Temper Trap and the Clipse — pretty classic eclectic Cmj booking). According to his MySpace page, Samuel has a musical pedigree, and his live show makes it really evident that entertaining is in his genes.
