Helena (Daisy Ridley), the title character of “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” is a woman living what she thinks is a safe, comfortable middle-class existence — just like the heroes of “Cape Fear” or “Straw Dogs.” And like those characters, she’s ripped out of her cocoon by a man with a vengeful agenda. In this case, the self-righteous stalker-invader is her father, Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn), who raised her in a cabin in the marshland wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, teaching her how to hunt and survive. In the film’s early scenes, we might almost be watching some off-the-grid version of the Laura Ingalls Wilder story, as Helena drinks in the woodland skills taught by Jacob, with each lesson marked by a homemade tattoo (he inks a deer on her neck when she gets her first kill).

‘Little House on the Prairie’: Alison Arngrim Required a Stunt Person During a Certain Type of Scene
Nellie Oleson was much prissier than her early character foil, Laura Ingalls, on Little House on the Prairie. But she still knew her way around a horse barn. Alison Arngrim the actor, however, did not. In fact, Arngrim had a distinct fear of horses that required her to use a stunt girl anytime Nellie was supposed to be riding a horse.

Little House on the Prairie is a tough show to be on with a fear of horses. According to Arngrim, she’s “very much a city girl.”
“I still can’t ride a horse,” she told Fox. “I was hopeless with the animals and I avoided them… I was terrified of horses actually. Whenever you saw me on a horse, the rest was a stunt girl. If we’re...

If you were hoping for another Elsa-centric outing, then 1883 Season 1 Episode 8 hit all the right notes.
But it does bring to attention a question.
What, exactly, is 1883 about, anyway?
It's a valid question, especially since it was never advertised as a coming-of-age adventure with a female protagonist.
At this point, eight episodes into the story, there's no doubt that it's what we've got. Personally, I don't mind it. As a female viewer, processing the trip through Elsa's eyes reminds me a little bit of Little House on the Prairie.
Once upon a time, westerns were told only through the male lens, but getting the feminine touch revitalizes the genre.
Just like Half Pint aka Laura Ingalls Wilder before her, Elsa bucks expectations. She's got a strong will, and her determined mindset upends tradition.
But it's not exactly what I'd expect from a historically accurate show. Was 1883 ever supposed to...

In a competition that’s been brewing since the 1970s, the original casts of the TV family classics The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie will come face-to-face (if remotely) in a special Game Night contest on Stars In The House.
The games – typically a combination of trivia and charades – are set for Sept. 21 and will feature Little House cast members Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls Wilder), Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson), Matthew Laborteaux (Albert Quinn Ingalls), and Karen Grassle (Caroline Ingalls) squaring off against Waltons alum Judy Norton (Mary Ellen Walton), Kami Cotler (Elizabeth Walton), Eric Scott (Ben Walton) and Leslie Winston (Cindy Brunson Walton).
As always with Stars In The House, the proceedings will raise money for The Actors Fund, and will stream on YouTube and at starsinthehouse.com. Viewers will be able to submit questions for both casts (and make donations) during the live event.

Thanks in no small part to Laura Ingalls Wilder, women's perspectives of 19th century life have been around for a long time, which is perhaps why, even though there is a lesbian love story at the heart of Mona Fastvold's latest film, it still feels very familiar. But The Little House On The Prairie stories are a sunny stroll compared to this rather bleak tale of life in upstate New York.
Abigail (Katherine Waterston) and her husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) cope with loss and loneliness in what feels like less like a world that's coming than the edge of the existing one. When newcomers Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) and Finney (Christopher Abbott) arrive in town, the women strike up a friendship, but soon they're swapping a lot more than just cornbread recipes.
Framed by voice-over diary entries from Abigail, these interludes at first offer atmosphere - as she talks about how "the water froze.

You would never think that HBO Max’s upcoming sci-fi drama “Raised by Wolves” would draw its inspiration from an old NBC series about life on a prairie, but that’s exactly how it was conceived.
Executive producer David Zucker, during Wednesday’s virtual Ctam press tour panel promoting the upcoming Ridley Scott-produced drama, described the series as “‘Little House on the Prairie’ on another planet.”
“Little House on the Prairie,” based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s autobiographical book of the same name, centers on a family living on a very rural Minnesota farm. That remote setting is very similar to the ones that the Androids and their human children find themselves considering they’re on an uninhabited planet.

Illustration by Alessandra GenualdoLet’s talk about dances of friendship, not of courtship. Of the dance that is not a prelude or background to something else, that’s beat-deaf and brassy, unnecessary and rude. The dance that takes center stage without a stage, that is more whoop and prance than swan. Let’s talk of romps, because that is what these dances are. Let’s talk of girls romping. That wildness for women has rules. If you read or see Little Women, you encounter the romp. In Greta Gerwig’s treatment, Jo March bumps into a dark-haired rich boy, Laurie, in a side room at a party. He asks her to dance, and she laughs and takes him in as a confidant: she’s scorched the back of her dress by the fire. She’s been told to keep still so that no one will see her. He nods. “I...

Paramount Pictures has picked up the in development feature film adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic book series "Little House on the Prairie".
The nine-book series began in 1932 and followed the author's recollections of growing up with her family in a log cabin in 1871. The property is best known for its long-running TV series adaptation starring Michael Landon.
Originally setup at Sony Pictures, David Gordon Green ("Joe," "Prince Avalance") was slated to direct but was replaced just over a year ago by Sean Durkin ("Martha Marcy May Marlene"). Then the film was put in turnaround by the studio where it languished until Paramount scooped it up recently.
Durkin is still in place to direct from a script by Abi Morgan ("Shame"). Scott Rudin ("Steve Jobs") will produce.

Paramount Pictures has snapped up the big screen adaptation of Little House on the Prairie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s the first tangible sign of progress from the dormant project in quiet some time, given that Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin signed on all the way back in 2014. He’s still attached to direct, though now that the long-gestating movie has found a home at Paramount – Sony had initially set the wheels in motion in 2012 – THR writes that Little House on the Prairie entered something of a creative turnaround when development began to grind to a halt.
Now, Paramount has placed Abi Morgan in charge of script duties, who will look to bring Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic book series to moviegoers at long last.
Here’s the official synopsis of Wilder’s novel, which she loosely based on her own family experience growing up in the American Midwest.

I’d say better late than never, but late almost feels worse: Finally, after 11 episodes of Machiavellian cruelty, megalomania, and a steely dedication to anti-mutant eugenics, Heroes Reborn has finally told us why Erica is such a terrible person. It’s a pretty understandable reason, honestly, though I wish we were at the point where powerful female characters could be horrible people without having to be sexually assaulted as teenagers by doctors with healing abilities who offers to save their father’s life in exchange for a little pedophilia action. "Rape victim finds agency through capitalism and genocide" doesn’t exactly leave a great taste in one’s mouth. So we learn Erica had a horrifying adolescence (though sepia-toned and inexplicably quaint, like Laura Ingalls Wilder of the 1970s) despite her father’s unwavering love and support; having a baby as a teenager by your rapist and then having to...

Most child actors in Hollywood grow up too fast, but at the Paris premiere of Mockingjay — Part 2, pint-sized Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence and Woody Harrelson proved they're focused on staying kids just a little while longer. On Monday, both of the preteen sensations dressed their age, walking the red carpet in casual pajamas, like it was their very own sleepover! 12-year-old Woody showed off a little bit of 'tude in his slacker-style pajama pants at the film's photo call, while 10-year-old Jen was simply adorable in her Laura Ingalls Wilder–inspired nightgown at the premiere. Aww! Can we be invited next time?...

In 1974, TV audiences were introduced to the Ingalls family, a frontier clan living in a rustic cabin in the Minnesota wilderness during the 1870s and '80s. America was in the middle of its Me Decade, with an exhausting war and general upheaval at home. The weekly dramas of a farmer and his children—based on the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder—were an irresistible look at a simpler time when people based their lives around family, home, and church. (All nine seasons are available on Digital HD on Amazon; seasons 1–3 are also available on Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate.

Once a rather surprising project on David Gordon Green's plate, the film adaptation of famed TV show "Little House On The Prairie" is now in the hands of an equally surprising name. Sean Durkin ("Martha Marcy May Marlene," the TV mini-series "Southcliffe" which is worth catching up with), is now the man behind camera for this movie, which has its origins in the children's book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder about a family living in the American Midwest in the 1880s. Abi Morgan ("Shame," "Brick Lane") penned the script, and Scott Rudin will produce. [THR] The ever-busy Spike Lee is back behind the camera, stepping once again into the documentary world. He's making a movie about Little League phenom Mo'ne Davis and "the Taney Dragons and their journey to the Little League World Series." [Wooder Ice] Stephen Chbosky, of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" fame, is shifting gears a bit, going the family.

Seventies TV shows seem to be rife for adaptation in our modern age of cinematic product, but they don't always guarantee the nostalgic drive they seek to inspire. For every Charlie's Angels there's a Starsky And Hutch waiting to piss everyone off. Yet somehow, a movie reboot of Little House On The Prairie isn't the worst idea that could be floated past our very eyes. According to a scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, director Sean Durkin, the man who brought Martha Marcy May Marlene to the screen back in 2011, is negotiating to head up the project based on a script by The Iron Lady scribe Abi Morgan. Scott Rudin is producing, and the film is being set up with Sony as the studio backing it. The original Little House On The Prairie series ran from 1974 to 1983. It adapted the autobiographical works of Laura Ingalls Wilder, as she recalled her childhood...

Sean Durkin knows farms. In his spine-tingling, 2011 directorial debut "Martha Marcy May Marlene," Durkin explored the inner-workings of modern cult life, an organic brainwashing operation set against a lush plantation. John Hawkes' Old McManson was creepy as hell, but the backdrop — just lovely! Durkin has taken time and deviations in putting a follow-up feature together (he recently directed the British mini-series "Southcliffe," which earned him a BAFTA), but his next project is coming to light — and takes him back to the homestead. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Durkin is set to direct a film version of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House in the Prairie," previously adapted into the popular Michael Landon-led TV that aired on NBC from 1974 to 1983. The books follow a fictionalized version of Laura as she grows up the in the 19th century American Midwest. Scott Rudin is producing the feature project, from a script by Abi Morgan ("Shame,...

But gingham may be about to come back in style after all. The peculiar news this morning is that Sean Durkin, director of the indie psychological thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene and producer of Simon Killer, is in talks to open the doors. Most of us encountered the TV adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical children’s classic book series on Channel 4 Sunday mornings, as it chronicled the gentle adventures of Ingalls family on the 19th century American frontier. We were introduced to Charles and Caroline Ingalls and their three daughters, Mary, Laura and Carrie. The word you're looking for is "wholesome", but there's something interesting afoot with the new movie that nobody's quite telling us yet. Little House on the Prairie is an institution of television that really needs no introduction, but the newly released remastered edition of season one (and the upcoming releases of all the seasons) are worth a serious look.
Some shows from this era and beyond, especially those in fair rotation in syndication, are difficult to push as a truly necessary purchase, but there are a lot of notes to Little House which made the previous releases, and this one especially, true must owns for fans. Of course, that does make for a certain question mark if one already has the previously-released season DVD efforts.
First, while many may get a decent fill of the show through syndication, there are a lot of episodes that simply never get play. There are several episodes that are likely seen as too controversial, or just plain overly harsh to a full family sensibility, to come up in syndicated cycles,...
