Based on the book by James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts, Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life is the next in the line of films featuring kids taking control of their world.
Rafe (Griffin Gluck) is heading into middle school, and he finds himself in the world of Principal Dwight (Andy Daly), who runs a tight ship, and has an overabundance of rules. Rafe and his friends put together a plan to break every rule Principal Dwight has, but he has to keep his plans, and rule-breaking, from his mom (Lauren Graham).
While this one looks like a lot of fun for younger audiences, its success probably rests on Daly’s shoulders, and he’s a great choice for the role. The “bad guy” in such a film can easily go too cartoony, and though Daly could probably aim for that if he wanted to, his work on things...

I recently had the opportunity to attend the press junket for Triple 9, the new crime thriller from director John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition, Lawless). I joined a small group of journalists to talk about the project with its director and stars, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Clifton Collins Jr., Norman Reedus, and Aaron Paul. I've condensed the interview into the most interesting segments, which you can read below.
Ejiofor on his preparation for playing a soldier-turned-criminal:
Ejiofor: The research aspect of the film, for me, was about the physicality of the character and getting into the weapons, really. Because I actually hadn’t done a film with a lot of gunplay before. Little bits in some stuff, but not like a large amount. So for months beforehand, when I first spoke to John about the film, it was important to me and important to him to develop a...

The sci-fi thriller follows the mayhem caused by an alien life form that threatens a small town.
Jackson will play a biochemistry professor attempting to thwart the other-worldly predator discovered deep within the earth.

Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten will produce along with Jack Harris, the 96-year-old producer of the original 1958 film, Judith Parker Harris, and Tae Won Chung.

B-movie classic The Blob is getting another remake. Why? I couldn’t tell you, but here we are. Goldcrest Films is moving forward with the project, which the studio has set The Expendables 2 helmer Simon West to direct.
The 1958 cult classic, directed by Irvin Yeaworth, starred a young Steve McQueen as a teenager whose small Pennsylvania hometown is unexpectedly threatened when a gelatinous alien life-form emerges from a meteor and begins to consume the townfolk, growing larger in size with every new victim and oozing forward with no indication of stopping.
The Blob, though received with mixed reviews at the time of its release, is now held up as a prime example of B-movie entertainment. It birthed a sequel, Larry Hagman’s 1972 Beware! The Blob, and was previously remade in 1988 by Chuck Russell. Producers on this remake are Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten.
West said of his new take:...

Once you’re absorbed by its terror, you can’t even scream. The slimy mass that is the Blob first thrilled audiences when it took on Steve McQueen on the big screen in 1958. It next oozed into cinemas via the 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob, before being reborn in a 1988 remake directed by Chuck Russell and co-written by Frank Darabont. Proving that it’s still a relentless alien amoeba, 1958’s The Blob is being remade once again.
Goldcrest Films is moving forward with a remake of The Blob, with Simon West (The Expendables 2, Con Air) lined up for the director’s chair and shooting slated to begin this summer. It’s hard to see why anyone dislikes Chav culture – after all – they’re always hanging round streets for daily intimidation, sucking bongs in nice public parks and peeing in shop doorways. They’re just making the place cosy, really.
Little do the general public know that as soon as benefit money goes in, it’s spent on fags, booze, Ugg boots, and getting random people’s names tattooed on their body. It’s a bloody hard life to keep up, and they get nothing but grief for it.
Then there’s relationships. You hang around hot spots (bus stations, sexual health clinics, McDonalds etc) looking for a potential partner; only to have them sleep with your aunty, cousin and dog after two days together. They’ll deny it, of course, but that’s nothing you can’t sort out by going on the Jezza Kyle show for a lie-detector test.

During their interview on "Good Morning America" Tuesday (December 17), the “Why Georgia” stud and his “Hot N Cold” chick discussed their new duet “Who You Love” and the struggle to navigate the often-complicated waters of dating in Hollywood.
John explained, “You get too close, it's a little too touchy feely and you get too far away and they say 'I don't see chemistry.’”
As for the ditty, Mayer shared, “I had this little chorus for years. And it was 'You love who you love' and I thought that was always going to be a great thing someday to have a song that people could hear and feel that sort of permission.”

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" follows loner Charlie (Logan Lerman) as he enters high school and all the drama that surrounds it. But Charlie isn't the kind of guy to join the football team or run for student council or even raise his hand in class.
To the Captains of this and the Presidents of that, Charlie is invisible. But, in this movie, he proves that this can be a good thing. A very good thing, as a matter of fact.
Now no one is saying Charlie doesn't have it a little rough – see the movie and/or read the book and you'll know what we mean – but sometimes there are serious benefits to sitting back, observing and letting the world happen around you. We came up with at least 10, just to prove it.
10. You have a pen pal who listens but never talks back.
9. Making snow angels is perfectly acceptable.

Time travel, as we all know, is (1) impossible in any real-life, non-quantum sense, and (2) irresistible to filmmakers. Rian Johnson's Toronto entry "Looper" asks us to accept it as a premise, and you know what? It's handled more realistically here than anything in the plots of the average superhero movie. One of the strengths of time travel is its demonstration that if we could travel through time and meet our parents or even ourselves at an earlier age, it could be an unbearably emotional experience. That's what happens in "Looper," although the emotion goes astray somewhat when two manifestations of the same person are entangled in a murder scheme by organized crime. Here is the ingenious scheme: In order to murder someone and not leave a trace, the syndicate ships them back in time, so they can be murdered and their bodies disposed of then. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a...

The stars shot pivotal scenes in Dubai's Burj Khalifa building and one sequence sees Renner almost falling out of a window as he reaches out to save Cruise.
But The Town actor admits he felt so sick to his stomach, he had to warn Cruise to beware.

Pedro Almodóvar made him a star. But then Hollywood beckoned and actor abandoned mentor. Twenty years on, they're back together – and boy does it feel good...
Three decades ago, an impoverished young actor named Antonio Banderas was sitting with friends outside Madrid's National theatre when a curious figure happened by. The new arrival sported a backcombed goth bouffant and brandished a bright red briefcase that could only contain documents of national importance. He ordered a drink, cracked some jokes then turned abruptly towards Banderas. "You have a very romantic face," he said. "You should do movies. Bye-bye!" And with that he was off, swinging his briefcase through the crowds on the Calle del Principe.
Nonplussed, Banderas turned to his friends. "Oh, that's Pedro Almodóvar," they told him. "He made a movie once. But he won't make any more."
Banderas and Almodóvar went on to make five films together. These were wild,...

For a while, it looked like TV's Malcolm was in the middle of one big mess. Last week, police investigated a disturbance at the Phoenix home of Frankie Muniz and his publicist girlfriend Elycia Turnbow. When it was all over the actor had handed over a gun to officers. Muniz’s rep Lauren Tobin tells People the duo now "are fine" and "as far as they are concerned, their issues are resolved." The Malcolm in the Middle star, 25, and Turnbow, are "still very much a couple," Tobin says. "Neither one is interested in finger-pointing at the other. It was a...

Christian Bale spoke a secret language on the set of "The Fighter". The 36-year-old actor portrays former drug addicted boxer Dicky Eklund in the new movie and says they spent so much time together working on the role he learned the former sportsman's own unique way of communicating, much to the bemusement of his co-stars, including Mark Wahlberg.
"Wherever Dicky goes, he's like the mayor of the streets. He's one of the funniest guys I've ever come across," he said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph newspaper. "He's got his own language he calls Dickinese, where he has different words for everything. I learned the whole thing so we could communicate. It was great because Dicky and I could talk on the set and nobody would have any idea what we were saying."

You are Harrison Ford. The year is 1985. You've just been informed that you've received an Academy Award nomination for your performance in the thriller Witness. You hang up the phone, sigh, and look in the mirror. Damn, it's been an incredible ten years. In 1975, you were, in the eye of the public, no one. Sure, a few sizable roles in films like American Graffiti and The Conversation, but nothing substantial nor standout. Hell, you were back to doing Dynasty TV movies within two years. But now look at you. How do you feel? Are there even words?
At age 33, Harrison Ford considered carpentry to be his future. And then this happened.

You hang around waiting for a documentary to expose the appalling depredations made on the Alberta tar sands by economic greed and heedless progress in search of fuel and energy. Then suddenly three come along. First, Dirty Oil, then Petropolis, and now H2Oil. They all tell the same tragic story, adding the odd new person or fact, in this case that of the brave Irish-Canadian doctor John O'Connor, persecuted by a national body called Canadian Health for causing public alarm.

With only four weeks and eight episodes remaining in its not-so-fresh ninth season, American Idol is going to try something a little different next Tuesday: Harry Connick Jr. will be the first guest mentor in the show's history to arrange the songs and write the orchestrations for the remaining contestants as they tackle the Frank Sinatra songbook. And since the top 5 hopefuls are having control wrested from their hands anyway, I say let's do the honor of choosing their songs as well. Foreign Objects travels the world of international cinema each week to look for films worth visiting. So renew your passport, get your shots, and brush up on the local age of legal consent, this week we’re heading to… China! It's a full fifty-nine minutes into John Woo's new film, Red Cliff, before the first white dove appears. I don't mention that to be cheeky (well maybe a little cheeky), but instead I'm bringing it up because it shows a certain amount of restraint on the part of the dove-loving director. It's one of the very few instances where Woo's film seems to take it's sweet time, and while that sounds like a criticism it actually isn't for a couple reasons. One, the version of Red Cliff currently playing in limited Us release is actually a truncated two and a half hour cut of two complete films (that were themselves over two hours each). And two...

Action-cinema master John Woo returns with the breathtaking war epic .Red Cliff.. The film tells the legendary tale of the Battle of Red Cliff that took place in China in 208 A.D. It.s a well-directed action adventure that will delight moviegoers.
Making his first Chinese film in 16 years, Woo returns to his roots with a movie that can rival any Hollywood blockbuster in scope and scale. With an estimated budget of $80 million, .Red Cliff. is the most expensive Asian-financed film to date.
The story of .Red Cliff. was first immortalized in the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It evolves around a historical battle that tells of the great intelligence and bravery of the ancient people of China.

Just the other day, I was seeing some venomous John Woo hate on The Twitter, and it reminded me that I may be one of the few folks in the blogosphere who has enjoyed Woo's films. No matter what the result -- or in many cases, the problems -- I've mostly found his stuff to be exciting. And that's the sort of buzz that we're hearing for Red Cliff, that it has some cool action. As well, you will see below that it also delivers some humor. Anyway, check out the clip for Red Cliff below, followed by the film's official synopsis. Film geeks still slaver over the early output of John Woo such as Hard Boiled and The Killer for their devotion to style and fantastic action sequences. However, the mid-90s and early aughts brought disappointment in the director for his less-than-stellar fare including Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle Hard Target, the shockingly bad Mission: Impossible II, and the forgettable Philip K. Dick adaptation Paycheck. But with exhilarating, epic action reminiscent of both Braveheart and Hero, the ancient Chinese war film Red Cliff restores Woo to the hall of the hallowed. It has the director's trademark style in spades, but it never skimps on story or character development.
Red Cliff is the most expensive movie in Asian cinema history, and it's easy to see where the money went. Countless actors in period costumes, numerous special effects shots, and impeccable sound all contribute to a masterfully created film that matches Hollywood's high standards with its impressive visuals.

Photo: Magnet Releasing In searching for a way to describe John Woo's Red Cliff the best I can come up with is to call it exactly what it is, a beautifully rendered 208 A.D. Chinese epic living in the world of a John Woo blockbuster popcorn feature. However, such a description seems almost contradictory, but nonetheless as accurate as I can get when referring to this equally playful, romantic and violent war story loosely based on the 14th-century Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms."

Director John Woo tells a story in the interview below about one major difference between his experience working on Hollywood blockbusters, and making Red Cliff (Chi Bi), his blockbuster-sized film which he shot in China with strong support from the Chinese government: he never had to sit through endless development meetings. He simply said he wanted to make the film, came up with a budget, received financing, and shot it. As someone who actually was a [very junior level] studio development executive at one time, I loved hearing this. The process by which films are created today at the studios, as it has been for a few decades now, is ridiculously time-consuming and both financially and creatively wasteful. Practically every script “fast“-tracked for production goes through a gauntlet of seemingly endless story notes in which not only the director, but also the studio, the producer, the stars,...
