Clement Cogitore’s “Sons Of Ramses” (“Goutte d’Or”) will have its world premiere in Cannes as a special screening in the Critics’ Week strand of the festival.
The film follows Ramses, a skilful clairvoyant in the multicultural Parisian district of La Goutte d’Or. When a gang of fearless kids start terrorizing the locals, the balance of his thriving business and of the whole neighborhood is disturbed. Until one day, when Ramses has a real vision.
The cast includes Karim Leklou (“The World is Yours”), Malik Zidi (“Oxygen”), Elsa Wolliaston (“Victoria”), Jawad Outouia, Elyes Dkhissi, Yilin Yang (“Three Times Nothing”) and Loubna Abidar (“Much Loved”).
After studying at Le Fresnoy (France’s National Studio for Contemporary Arts), Cogitore developed his artistic practice between the spaces of cinema and contemporary art. In 2015, his first feature film, “The Wakhan Front” was selected at the Cannes Critics’ Week, where it won the...

A scene from the French crime thriller TV series “Nox,” streaming on Topic. Courtesy of Topic.
“Nox” is a six-episode subtitled miniseries from French TV that is far more complicated than most, but worth investing the requisite degree of concentration. It’s perfect for binging, since that makes it easier to stay with all the characters and subplots unfolding before you. It starts as cops vs. bank robbers, from the vantage of detective partners Julie and Raphael as they figure out which bank will targeted next. They nail it, but most of the thieves manage to escape into Paris’ elaborate underground systems of tunnels. Julie dashes into the dark ahead of her partner and inexplicably vanishes.
The hunt for her is on, but subterranean Paris is three levels of spider webs under the entire city, with the lowest dating back to the Roman Empire’s occupation. No one has explored all of them.

A clever example of creativity thriving within the strict protocols of the coronavirus pandemic, tense confinement thriller “Oxygen” plays like “Buried” in outer space: a ticking-clock sci-fi survival drama centered on a single character (“Inglourious Basterds” star Mélanie Laurent) trapped in a spiffy, coffin-like cryochamber with critically low reserves of breathable air. The blank-brained “bioform” awakens ahead of schedule, sealed in some kind of futuristic membrane, with only a helpful Hal 9000-like talking computer called Milo to assist her.
Making his first French-language feature since “High Tension,” extreme-horror helmer Alexandre Aja injects a bit too much outside-the-box style into Christie LeBlanc’s bare-bones, Black List-selected screenplay. But the timing is fortuitous: Here’s a high-concept Netflix movie, originally intended for another actress, that was shot in the window between France’s initial Covid-19 lockdown and the industry-hammering second wave.

"Find what triggers your memories." Netflix has released the full-length official trailer for Oxygen, a new contained sci-fi survival thriller from filmmaker Alexandre Aja. We posted the teaser trailer for this just a month ago, and now this full trailer hints are more of what's happening inside here. A woman wakes up in a cryogenic chamber with no recollection of how she got there, and must find a way out before running out of air. That's all we know. Mélanie Laurent stars, though the cast includes a few other names like Mathieu Amalric (as the voice of her computer), Marc Saez, and Malik Zidi. I am very much looking forward to this, my kind of intelligent sci-fi. And whatever this score is here, I'm already madly in love with. Stunning. Here's the full-length trailer (+ poster) for Alexandre Aja's Oxygen, direct from Netflix's YouTube: You can still see the first...

"Where do we begin?" Whoaaaaa this look scool! Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Oxygen, a contained thriller set (as far as we can tell) mostly inside a cryogenic unit. This is the latest feature from French genre filmmaker Alexandre Aja, who last made the impressive Crawl and this looks like something quite clever, too. It seems to be a mashup between Buried and Cube. A woman wakes up in a cryogenic chamber with no recollection of how she got there, and must find a way out before running out of air. That's all we know about it. Mélanie Laurent stars, though the cast includes a few other names like Mathieu Amalric, Marc Saez, & Malik Zidi. Promotions continue reorg initiated last year when company became independent standalone entity.
French sales powerhouse Wild Bunch International (Wbi) has announced a series of in-house promotions on the first day of the AFM.
The promotions are part of an ongoing reorganisation that started last year when the sales entity restructured to become an independent standalone company with strong links to the Wild Bunch Group, rather than acting as its in-house international sales division.
“While continuing its collaboration with Wild Bunch, Wild Bunch International continues its reorganisation and transformation aimed at dealing with the major changes in our profession,” the company said in a statement.

Wild Bunch International, an independent subsidiary of European film, TV and media group Wild Bunch, has made four internal promotions just as the virtual AFM gets into gear. The sales company, which was formed as part of a reorganization last year, remains under the management of Eva Diederix.
Wbi has notably named Noémie Devide to head up production and acquisitions in close collaboration with Diederix’s team. Devide will continue in her role at Mad River International. Via Getaway Films, the Wild Bunch-affiliated indie, Devide is in post on Alexandre Aja’s O2 for Netflix. Melanie Laurent, Mathieu Amalric and Malik Zidi star.

Alexandre Aja has been confirmed to direct the slightly confusingly-titled O2 for Netflix. The survival thriller, which is presumably not linked to the mobile phone network of the same name, will be shot in the French language, and is currently expected to arrive on Netflix in mid-2021. Production has now started for the feature, a positive sign given the recent Covid-19 delays to the entertainment industry.
O2 will star Mélanie Laurent, best known for turns in Inglourious Basterds and 6 Underground, as well as the repeatedly-delayed Tenet, as a woman who wakes up in a medical cryo unit without her memory. The character then has to piece together her memories in order to escape the chamber before her oxygen runs out. Aja was originally set only to produce, with Franck Khalfoun of Maniac directing, but he’s now taken over directorial responsibilities as well.
Furthermore, Laurent’s role was reportedly first linked to Noomi Rapace,...

After book-ending the last decade with the immensely enjoyable Piranha 3D and Crawl, Alexandre Aja is now kicking off this decade with a survival thriller marking his return to a French-language film. Led by Mélanie Laurent, Mathieu Amalric, and Malik Zidi, the film, which has already begun shooting, is titled O2 and has been picked up by Netflix for a release in mid-2021.
The script by Christie LeBlanc, which made the Black List, tells the story of a young woman who wakes up in a medical cryo unit. She doesn’t remember who she is or how she ended up sequestered in a box no larger than a coffin. As she’s running out of oxygen, she must rebuild her memory to find a way out of her nightmare. Netflix has begun production on O2, a French survival thriller to be directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Melanie Laurent. Getaway Films’ Vincent Maraval, Brahim Chioua and Noëmie Devide are producing the Black List script by Christie LeBlanc. The film will be released on Netflix in mid-2021. Mathieu Amalric and Malik Zidi have also joined the cast.
This is a project that previously had Noomi Rapace attached to star for director Franck Khalfoun and with Aja producing (Wild Bunch International kicked off sales at the Efm). Prior to that, Anne Hathaway was in the mix. The most recent switch-up marks Aja’s return behind the camera on a French-language project after such U.S.-based films as Crawl, The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha 3D. Aja will also produce alongside longtime associate Gregory Levasseur.

“Daguerreotype” is Kurosawa’s first cinematic excursion outside of Japan. While we have become accustomed to seeing Asian directors choosing to shoot their first non-Japanese language feature in English and mainly within the constraints of the Us studio system – Nakata has directed in both the Us and UK albeit not with much success – Kurosawa’s choice of France works exceptionally well and hasn’t impacted negatively on his artistic or aesthetic vision. Instead, “Daguerreotype” seamlessly melds Kurosawa’s Japanese sensibility with those of French art cinema.
“Daguerrotype” is screening at Japan Cuts, that will be until July 23.

Chicago – The art masters, and the masterpieces they have created, become a background culture in our lives… even if we don’t necessarily know the artist. Paul Gauguin is one of those painters-as-cultural-influencer, and a vital point in his artistic life is told in the film “Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Vincent Cassel – best known to American audiences in “Ocean’s Twelve” (and “Thirteen”) – dives into the role of Paul Gauguin like a man possessed, and in many ways this was Gauguin’s most obsessive period. He left everything behind as a French painter to find his “artistic” self in Tahiti, and as many great masters do, paid the price. The story is fascinating and frustrating, much like the artist himself, but doesn’t project an understanding to the artist’s inner life or the Tahitian natives around him. This works as a lesson in being an artist over everything else,...

"I feel alive again." Cohen Media Group has released an official Us trailer for the film Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti, originally known as just Gauguin in its released in Europe last year. The film is finally hitting limited Us theaters this summer. Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti stars Vincent Cassel as famous French artist Paul Gauguin, a painter who decided to leave behind his wife and child and civilized life to travel out to Tahiti in 1891. The film is about his decision to go to Tahiti and his romance and connection with a young Tahitian girl named Tehura, played by Tuheï Adams. The cast includes Malik Zidi, Pua-Taï Hikutini, Pernille Bergendorff, Marc Barbé, Paul Jeanson, Cédric Eeckhout, and Samuel Jouy. This looks quite good, with a compelling performance by Cassel as the inspired painter. I would really like to see this. "You bend reality to suit yourself." An official Us trailer has arrived for one of Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa's films from last year, titled Daguerrotype (properly spelled - Daguerreotype). The film first premiered at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival, and has been awaiting a Us release ever since. It goes under a few different titles - The Woman in the Silver Plate, or in France it's Le secret de la chambre noire, which translates roughly to The Secret of the Dark Room. French actor Tahir Rahim stars as a young apprentice in Paris, back in the days of daguerreotypes. He falls for the photographer's daughter, but they learn there's some kind of malevolent forces stopping them from escaping. The full cast includes Olivier Gourmet, Constance Rousseau, Mathieu Amalric, Malik Zidi, Valérie Sibilia. This seems like a strange film. It is just ten days until what is perhaps the most exciting cinematic event of every year comes to bear: an announcement of the Cannes Film Festival lineup. We’ve featured glimpses of some of titles that might make their way to southern France next month, and today we’ve collected first looks at three more, all of which are greatly anticipated. How anticipated? So anticipated, in fact, that just an image warrants a post.
The first, from Wild Bunch, showcases Bertrand Bonello‘s Paris Is Happening — now being referred to as Nocturama in the native tongue — a picture about youths who take it upon themselves to sabotage the city of love with a series of explosions. Yes, even the writer-director is uncomfortable with that level of relevance — especially the writer-director, actually — as he told me back in December. French terror plot thriller Made in France will not be released before the beginning of 2016, following Islamic State attacks in Paris over the weekend.
“We need to re-evaluate the best time to bring the film out,” said James Velaise, president of Paris-based Pretty Pictures, who decided to halt a scheduled release on 100 copies this Wednesday (Nov 18) following the carnage in the French capital on Friday night that saw at least 132 people killed and left 350 injured.
“No-one put any pressure on us to pull the film,” he added. “The cinemas didn’t suddenly say we’re not going to give you the screens. We just decided the subject matter was too close to home to what happened on Friday.

“I can’t see it coming out for at least another six, or even eight weeks. We have to see how events unfold.”

This is a talk given by French director of photography Caroline Champetier at the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival in October 2012, originally published in two parts on the festival’s site (www.fif-85.com). This translation is being published with their kind permission. This year's festival will take place from October 16-21, Kelly Reichardt will be the guest of honor. Many thanks to Emmanuel Burdeau, programmer of the festival, Jordan Mintzer and Caroline Champetier.
Caroline Champetier: I’ve always tried to take a step back from what I’m doing. The more I work, however, the less I’m able to deal with this exercise. I just finished production on Claude Lanzmann’s The Last of the Unjust and have barely said goodbye to David Teboul, a young director who I worked with on Cinq avenue Marceau (2002), a film I think very highly of and that’s about Yves Saint Laurent’s last collection.

Title: Amaro Amore (Bitter Love) Director: Francesco Henderson Pepe Starring: Aylin, Prandi, Malik Zidi, Francesco Casisa, Yorgo Voyagis, Ángela Molina, Lavinia Longhi. Did you know that the French word for dustbin is poubelle? Well if the 50s and 60s were the times of the ‘New Wave,’ the Nouvelle Vague, it seems like Francesco Henderson Pepe’s first feature film ‘Amaro Amore’ will begin the era of the “Poubelle Vague,” i.e. Franco-Italian trash-films! The enticing Eolian location becomes the perfect stage for the existential drama. Two French siblings André and Camille go to the Sicilian islands in search for their identities, where they will meet Santino, a local guy from Salina and [ Read More ]

Rebellion | Promised Land | Evil Dead | Olympus Has Fallen | Love Is All You Need | Me And You | F*ck For Forest | Bait | The Words
Rebellion (15)
(Mathieu Kassovitz, 2011, Fra) Mathieu Kassovitz, Iabe Lapacas, Malik Zidi. 135 mins
Working with a real-life 1980s incident in New Caledonia (not dissimilar to a French Falklands), Kassovitz crafts a thoughtful thriller with no heroes, only good intentions compromised by colonialist mistrust and distant politics. His negotiator is set between a hair-triggered French military and separatist rebels, but with an election back home, not everyone wants a peaceful outcome.
Promised Land (15)
(Gus Van Sant, 2012, Us/UAE) Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand. 107 mins
With fracking as the central concern, this finds it hard to avoid being an "issue movie", but there's some human drama to it. Damon's gas agent comes to an archetypal small town with a buyout in mind, but the locals and their country ways get to him.

tMF is in constant lookout for the next breakout star and we're happy to discover and write about some of the most talented young French actors today - Gaspard Ulliel, Louis Garrel, Malik Zidi and the two mega-talented leading men - Romain Duris and Melvil Poupaud. So now, we have another rising star - and he's quite a looker.

But he's no longer an up and coming actor to some and the Disney channel (via this show) has something to do with this early brush with fame. If American teens scream for the Jonas brothers, their French counterparts are doing the same for Francois Civil.
But apparently, the young French actor wanted something more challenging. Now already 20 years old, he seriously took...

CANNES -- Emmanuel Bourdieu's second feature, which opens Cannes' Critics Week, tells the story of three student friends, intelligent, articulate and passionate about literature, who meet at that crucial point in their lives where their potential has been established but the path to self-realization remains shrouded in uncertainty.
The charismatic Andre (Thibault Vincon) -- brilliant, self-confident and peremptory in his judgments -- rapidly assumes the role of mentor to his comrades, guiding Alexandre (Alexandre Steiger) toward a career in theater and advising Eloi (Malik Zidi) in his work and love life. In return, he demands and obtains unconditional loyalty. He himself appears destined for great things, preparing a doctorate under Sorbonne professor Claude Mortier (Jacques Bonnaffe).
The movie is slow to show its hand, but it gradually becomes clear that Andre, despite or perhaps because of his promise, is going off the rails. He alienates his supervisor, maliciously deletes a story written by his sweet-natured librarian girlfriend Marguerite (Natacha Regnier) from her computer and then announces that he is leaving for America on a prestigious scholarship when in fact he has signed up with the French army for a lowly job as a cultural instructor.
Alexandre, meanwhile, has been finding himself as an actor, and Eloi -- who teams up Marguerite after she has broken with Andre -- writes a novel that becomes a critical success after his novelist mother Florence (Dominique Blanc) presents it to her publisher.
Andre's deceptions are duly revealed, and the final confrontation in a restaurant where the friends gather to celebrate their success sees him cast as the chronic underachiever whose former disciples are now set to scale the heights.
Bourdieu, the son of a noted academic and formerly a writer for directors Arnaud Desplechin and Nicole Garcia, convincingly portrays the tensions of university life, particularly the role-playing and testing of limits among students. However, the movie, absorbing rather than gripping, does not really deliver on the promise of malfeasance contained in the title.
Andre, whose story forms its core, is more the victim than the beneficiary of the sway he exercises over his companions, and the origins of his inability to make anything of his talents are not seriously examined. The stories of Alexandre and Eloi, particularly the latter's relationship with his mother, are thinly developed, and the suddenness of their success is rather baffling, so that the resolution feels imposed rather than a natural consequence of what has come before.
But the actors' performances, particularly those of the relative newcomers in the lead roles, are uniformly excellent, and together with the crisp dialogue by Bourdieu and co-writer Marcia Romano, the warm colors, frequent night settings and Gregoire Hetzel's original score in the style of Schumann and Hoffmann make for an intelligent entertainment.
