The Condemned series of games were some of the best horror you could find on the 7th generation of consoles. Admittedly, while the second game didn’t quite live up to the first, it was still a good game that took risks in trying new things. It also makes it that much more frustrating that Monolith never gave us a third installment.
With that, Gvmers are back once again to look at both entries in the series. The new documentary covers how Condemned: Criminal Origins’ claustrophobic setting and creepy atmosphere combined with its combat mechanics to make for some of the scariest late-night gaming. Meanwhile, Condemned 2: Bloodshot‘s change in story and gameplay (not to mention an ill-conceived multiplayer mode) led to fans being divided over the game, and ultimately put any sequels on the backburner for Monolith.

The first rule of Twin Galaxies Fight Club is that everyone is going to be talking about Fight Club come this Sunday’s show-off.
Billed as a sort of exhibition match featuring the top fighting game players in the world across ten fighting games, Twin Galaxies Fight Club No. 1 is free to watch or attend (those seats were snatched up in less than a day) and takes place between the dusk of Saturday and twilight of Sunday.
The 17 invited competitors will make their way across the street from the annual Evo showdown, the most prestigious fighting game tournament in the world, to the Esports Arena Las Vegas located in the Luxor Hotel and Casino Saturday night.
The matches, which wrap up with two main events pitting legendary players against one another in “Dragon Ball FighterZ” and “Street Fighter V,” starts at 0 p.m. and is likely to run to 3 a.

To a certain strata of die-hard old-timers who fondly remember the arcade days of yore, when dimly-lit bars darkened by the constant swirl of smoke housed all the latest and greatest flashing amusements, and drunken arguments were settled by the quarter, the name “Twin Galaxies” exudes a kind of faded authority, a promise of a universal video game scoreboard that was never quite fulfilled, at least in its original conception.
But now, under new management led by industry veteran Jace Hall, the organization has shifted its score dispute process from a single referee to the hordes of arcade enthusiasts, jettisoning suspect records held by the likes of hot-sauce slinging “King of Kong” Billy Mitchell in the process. With that behind them, Twin Galaxies now seeks to establish itself as not only the ur-scoreboard for the dusty cabinets at your local barcade, but the destination for all of competitive gaming, from “Angry Birds” on up.

Seth Gordon’s 2007 documentary, “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters,” received a bonus life this month thanks to the stripping of “antagonist” Billy Mitchell’s “Donkey Kong” world records by independent video game achievements organization Twin Galaxies.
Steve Wiebe, who was the “protagonist” in the documentary, told Variety that being back in the news after 11 years has been “surreal.” He had heard gamers questioning the authenticity of Mitchell’s scores for years both in person at Kong Off events and online through the “Donkey Kong” forum, although there was never anything concrete until James Young recently revealed video evidence. And with Twin Galaxies finding Mitchell had cheated, Wiebe finally beat Mitchell.
“The more I thought about it from the ‘King of Kong’ days, it all seemed to make sense now,” Wiebe said. “All the things that were happening at the time… like why he didn’t come out and play me,...

Jason Hall isn't the first actor-turned-director, but he's definitely part of a growing trend of former actors becoming stars through their writing instead of a leading role. There's Taylor Sheridan, who turned to writing when his acting career stalled. Now he's the voice behind critically acclaimed movies like Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River, his directorial debut. Like Sheridan, Jason Hall's acting career wasn't as fruitful as he had hoped, and so he...

From war to war, only the proper nouns change. Boys with no idea what they’re in for, barely past schooling age, still get seduced by the promise of military camaraderie and the sense of purpose it affords. The harsh reality of combat still grinds the spirit right out of them – sometimes gradually over a span of months, sometimes in the course of five harrowing minutes – until only a hollow shell remains. And they still bring the battle home with them, forced to reintegrate into a society that doesn’t know what to do with them, and isn’t particularly concerned with figuring that out. There’s a lot going on in Geek Culture right now. I’m just amazed how shows like Supergirl, The Flash and Jessica Jones have engaged faithful fans and created new fans simultaneously. I’m surprised to be reading about Santa Con and noting the similarities to the explosive Cosplay growth at every comic convention this past year. And I’m encouraged by the all the great Geek Culture books, comics, merchandise and collectibles out there – and ecstatic that it’s so creative and fun.

Creepy Fps, Condemned, could return to our screens as an indie, as the series owner reaches out to fans and potential developers...
Condemned: Criminal Origins, and its sequel, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, are two often overlooked gems that many gamers have either yet to play, or haven't even heard of. This is a shame, as the games, particularly the first, are superb examples of arrival horror Fps done right.
They featured a mixture of melee and ranged combat, forensic examination, puzzle solving, psychological horror, and a whole heap of crazy assailants. The series was exclusive to Microsoft's Xbox and the PC, and was developed by Monolith, and published by Sega.
After the second game was released, however, the series has vanished from our radar, until now. On his Facebook page, the series creator and owner, Jace hall, has posted a status asking fans and potential developers for interest in a new Condemned title.

"Boyhood" continues its march toward the Oscars with a nomination from the Writers Guild of America.
The guild announced its nominations for best original screenplay and best adapted screenplay, and predictably, "Boyhood" and "Gone Girl" feature in those categories, respectively.
Joining Richard Linklater in original screenplay competition is Wes Anderson for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and Damien Chazelle for "Whiplash." Interestingly, "Whiplash" is classified as an adapted screenplay by the Academy Awards.
In the adaptation category, Gillian Flynn faces off against Jason Hall for "American Sniper" and Nick Hornby for "Wild."
Some notable snubs include Oscar frontrunners like "Birdman" and "Selma," which were not eligible for Writers Guild honors. Here is the complete list of nominees:
Original Screenplay
"Boyhood," written by Richard Linklater
"Foxcatcher," written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman
"The Grand Budapest Hotel," screenplay by Wes Anderson; story by Wes Anderson & Hugo Guinness

In what’s being hailed as a career standout turn, Bradley Cooper stars in the true story of Navy Seal Chris Kyle – family man, one-time rodeo cowboy, and the undisputed most lethal sniper in U.S. history.
Clint Eastwood directs Cooper, Sienna Miller, Jake McDorman, Luke Grimes, Navid Negahban and Keir O’Donnell in the Christmas Day drama adapted by Jason Hall from Kyle’s memoir. Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow premiered the film at AFI Fest on Veterans Day and wrapped a flurry of critics’ kudos into their new second trailer.
This peek better suggests the precarious balance Kyle struggled to keep in his roles as husband, father, and soldier as he served four nightmarish tours of duty in Iraq. Could it nab Cooper his third consecutive Oscar nomination after Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle?

Actors often go to great lengths to embody the characters they play. Jake Gyllenhaal slimmed down for "Nightcrawler," Steve Carell put on a prosthetic nose for "Foxcatcher," and Eddie Redmayne contorted and twisted his body in "The Theory Of Everything." This awards season, Bradley Cooper has dared to go Full Beard in "American Sniper." And today you get a glimpse of the beard, and the man, in the first clip from the film. The movie is based on the true story of Chris Kyle, one of the deadliest snipers in Navy S.E.A.L. history, whose success on the battlefield is mirrored by his fragile state when he returns to civilian life. But in this scene, you can watch Kyle in his comfort zone overseas. For more insight on the film, director Clint Eastwood, actor Sienna Miller, writer Jason Hall, and producer Robert Lorenz recently took part in an...

If you’d like a first look at Cabin Fever: Patient Zero, a live Q&A is taking place tonight with actress Jillian Murray and they’re going to show exclusive clips from the movie.
Kaare Andrews directed the movie and this is said to be the first of two upcoming Cabin Fever sequels, with the next movie being titled Cabin Fever: Outbreak. In Cabin Fever: Patient Zero, a “bachelor party cruise in the Caribbean unexpectedly runs ashore on a medical-research island”. Somehow a deadly virus is unleashed and, as you can probably guess, things won’t turn out well for most of the survivors.
The script was written by Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher remake) and stars Sean Astin, Brando Eaton, Lydia Hearst, Jillian Murray, Ryan Donowho, and Mitch Ryan. The live stream Q&A is part of Jace Hall’s 1337LoungeLive and it will start at 7:00pm Pst.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Appian Way have acquired Jason Hall's script pitch "Rasputin". The project is being developed for Leonardo DiCaprio to play the mad monk.
If it goes forward, DiCaprio would star as the Russian mystic who became an advisor to the Imperial family the Romanovs in the early 20th century.
Rasputin's influence, partly due to his ability to treat the hemophilia of Tsar Nicholas II's son, grew to the point that rivals tried several times to kill him (and succeeded in 1916).
Hall's new take on the man adds more dimensions than previously seen in films featuring the character. This includes how the death of his brother affected him, and the kindness of which he was capable.
Kevin McCormick, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Peter Morgan will produce.

Making sure his acting hiatus isn't too long, Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to star in the upcoming biopic "Rasputin."
In early 20th century Russia, Grigori Rasputin was a powerful advisor to the Russian Imperial family, the Romanovs. His mysticism and alleged dabbling in the dark arts brought him worldwide notoriety.
The Warner Bros. production will be written by Jason Hall and produced by Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Kevin McCormick, and Peter Morgan.
In the meantime, fans can catch the 38-year-old actor in the upcoming drama, "The Wolf of Wall Street," hitting theaters on November 15th.

When Robert Luketic — the kind of director with a filmography so slight it barely exists — said that he and Liam Hemsworth were discussing a “mystery project” that, with any luck, would start up in the near future, let’s just say the receptive parts of my brain weren’t exactly churning away.
If only they had more details then. Deadline tells us the project is a corporate espionage thriller, Paranoia, that Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford are on the cusp of signing for. Has your attention been grabbed? Scripted by Jason Hall, Luketic‘s film will be set in “the world of dueling telecom giants” — I can only imagine Oldman and Ford will play the head of either company — and, if the director’s comments have held water over two weeks, filming locations should be divided between New York and Mumbai.
I’ll freely acknowledge that Luketic doesn’t interest me in any legitimate fashion,...

I bet a lot of you have no idea what we’re talking about, but Space: 1999 was a very cool sci-fi show. Yes, it aired in the 1970s (so it was futuristic), and yes that means that the uniforms were fairly unattractive. It was still very cool. The idea was that there were people stationed on a moonbase (“Moonbase Alpha”) when a terrible accident happened and the moon was knocked out of orbit and sent hurtling through space, kinda like a space ship. See? Very cool.
The series was created by then-husband-and-wife team Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, who also created the even better UFO, and starred then-husband-and-wife team Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, who previously worked together on the Mission Impossible TV series. It was originally created for ITV, a British TV network.

With his remake of "V" for ABC a valiant effort to try and recapture the magic of classic science-fiction television, television and game producer Jace Hall is trying again. This time with "Space: 1999." Based on the classic 1970s series from Gerry Anderson and then wife Sylvia Anderson, "Space: 1999" centers around a tragic event on Sept. 13, 1999, which pushes the moon out of orbit, turning it into a spacecraft, so to speak, that allows the inhabitants of the moon base there to explore. The original series starred Martin Landau and Barbara Bain from "Mission: Impossible," and had a host of well-known writers including Terrance Dicks (a script editor with classic "Doctor Who") and the late Fred Freiberger, who was in charge of the original "Star Trek's" final season. When the series ...

British sci-fi show Space: 1999 is to return to our TV screens in an updated version called Space: 2099.
Two new teaser posters for the new project have been unveiled and are included below.
Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's show centred on the occupants of Moonbase Alpha after Earth's moon was flung out of orbit into the depths of outer space by an explosion of nuclear waste stored on its dark side.
Viewers followed the lunar colonists as they encountered alien worlds and unknown forces.
Starring Martin Landau and Barbara Bain - and later Catherine Schell as the shapeshifting alien Maya (right) - the series ran from 1975 to 1977. Despite its relatively short run, it is fondly remembered and regarded as a cult classic.

The classic 1970's sci-fi TV series Space: 2099 will be reimagined as a new TV series. The series will be developed by ITV Studios America and Hdfilms, the same people that brought V back to the small screen. Unfortunately, V turned out to be a dud.
The original series was created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and starred Martin Landau (Ed Wood) and Barbara Bain (Mission: Impossible), who played crew members of Moonbase Alpha struggling to survive after a massive explosion throws the Moon from orbit into deep space.
HDFilms president and executive producer of the series Jace Hall had this to say about what they are doing:
Science fiction is a powerful format capable of visualizing the human condition in thought-provoking ways. While we are indeed re-imagining the franchise and bringing something new and relevant to today’s audiences, I feel strongly that some of the overall tones set by...

Two more writers have been confirmed for season seven of Doctor Who, joining the previously announced Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss, and John Fay. First up is Being Human (UK) creator Toby Whithouse, whose previous episodes include School Reunion, Vampires of Venice, and The God Complex. The second writer is Chris Chibnall, who wrote the underrated David Tennant episode 42. There might be another writer or two who still hasn’t been announced, possibly including Gareth Roberts, who might end up writing a third Craig Owens episode with James Corden, something that has been rumored a few times.
Terry O’Quinn has snagged a 2 episode appearance on TNT’s Falling Skies. The big hit from last summer returns with further alien aggression. O’Quinn will guest star in the final two episodes of the season.
20Th Century Fox has set July 26, 2013 for the release of The Wolverine, the sequel to 2009’s X Men Origins: Wolverine.

Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's Space: 1999 is being pushed ahead one hundred years. A new television series called Space: 2099 is being developed and will be shopped around to potential partners.
The Space: 2099 show is being made by ITV Studios America and HDFilms. The latter company was one of the teams involved with the recent reboot of another TV sci-fi series, ABC's V.
For fans of the original show, unfortunately there was nothing said about the Space: 2099 story. We don't know if it will be a direct continuation of the first series or a reboot of the same idea, this time pushed ahead a century. However, a promo image showing a decrepid Eagle spaceship (the show's signature spaceship) is seen resting on the moon's surface. Behind it a crane towers beside a different looking spaceship. Is that the next Eagle?
The Space: 1999 show premiered before Star Wars captivated audiences.

ITV Studios America and Hdfilms have announced plans for "Space: 2099", a contemporary re-imagination of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's classic 70's British sci-fi series "Space: 1999" says The Hollywood Reporter.
The original series follows the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha after a catastrophic accident involving nuclear waste from Earth knocks the Moon out of orbit and sends it hurtling uncontrollably into space. During their interstellar journey they encounter alien civilizations, dystopian societies, and mind-bending phenomena.
Martin Landau, Barbara Bain and Nick Tate starred in the series which ran for two seasons, the first dealing with more metaphysical themes and hints of a larger storyline while the second proved a more straightforward action series.
Hdfilms were behind ABC's recent revival of 80's sci-fi franchise "V" and Jace Hall will serve as executive producer. The project is still in development phase and has yet to be shopped to networks.

I was getting around Los Angeles on Southern California’s most favorite form of transportation (I’m joking...Lol!), when, during a break from the Spanish language noticias, I noticed a couple of familiar voices. I looked up to see Jace Hall and Felicia Day talking shop on Transit TV in one La County’s 2,000 or so buses equipped with the digital network’s screens. "Pretty cool," I thought to myself. Apparently someone at the city’s Metro bus system and Transit TV thought showing web series to the 1,184,224 Los Angelinos who make daily use of the city’s public transportation services was pretty cool, too. The two entities today announced they will screen the online original series Los Americans on La Metro bus routes. When the new version of V first showed up, I was surprisingly hopeful. Back when it was simply a theory, I had little interest in a reboot of the camp alien drama, especially since reworking anything that Marc Singer has been a part of is pure folly. Like many of our recent trips back to the ’80s, there is too serious an air at work here, but the first few episodes were actually rather interesting. After that, the ratings proved that there was a market for the show, and that it was doing a fair job living up to whatever expectations had drawn viewers in.
While there are a variety of twists to the original story, the heart of the matter is the same, and the general architecture of the first season’s plot closely resembles the main points of the original. Aliens come to Earth with smiling faces, faces...

Calhoun appeared via Skype in the series first long distance interview, and appropriately enough discussed his experiences working in web series outside of the dreaded La bubble. The only downside to the interview is that considering she was speaking with the Dallas based Blake Calhoun; I was hoping Kristyn would be wearing a cowboy hat. Back in August of 2008, when we covered the launch of TheWB.com along with their impressive list of their upcoming web originals, it seemed like WB was going to be a major force in web series. After starting with a strong push behind series like Sorority Forever and Rich Girl, Poor Girl, the teen network cooled on web originals, opting instead for reruns of TV shows like The O.C. and Gilmore Girls. Several of the original 2008 slate of web shows stayed on the shelf despite being largely anticipated, including the animated Chadam and the McG-backed Exposed. Two years later, these two still have yet to hit the web. That all changes today, as TheWB.com releases their slate of summer programming. However, as we all know, if it’s up on the internet for two seconds, it’s there permanently. Internet social outlets have become a common ground for stars to inadvertently reveal private information, like accidentally announcing a game or two.
It seems as though Ice-t has joined the bandwagon.
