1. mother!Darren Aronofsky’s divisive nightmare boasted a number of very striking posters this year, including one that blatantly yet beautifully pastiched the iconic Gips/Frankfurt design for Rosemary’s Baby and another in which Jennifer Lawrence’s face is minutely cracked like a porcelain doll. But it is this first teaser poster for the film, by the extraordinary artist James Jean, that stands out for me not only as a surreally appropriate representation of Aronofsky’s uncompromising vision, but as the best movie poster of the year. Grotesque and gorgeous, and dotted with hidden clues, Jean’s looks more like a piece of devotional iconography than a poster for a horror movie. (There is also an accompanying poster by Jean which features Javier Bardem’s character.) Known for his covers for the DC comic book series Fables, Jean has been in high demand this year, creating the charcoal illustration...

The artwork you see here comes from artist Carlos Ramos, a storyboard artist/writer on Dexter's Labratory, Ni Hao Kai-lan and several other animated kids TV series. His artwork was inspired by the films of Stanley Kudrick, and he is holding a solo art exhibition at the Corpro Gallery July 10th thru August 3rd.
11 years after the death of Stanley Kubrick, Ramos pays homage to the man who wrote and directed such films as A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey by transforming the galley into a retrospective space with graphic pieces celebrating the greatest and most respected filmmaker in history. Ramos faces his longtime obsession with Kubrick by painting interpretations of his films including the white-on-white habitations of 2001 to the Native American carpet patterns of The Shining to the matching white Droog uniforms in A Clockwork Orange. The emptiness and humanity of Stanley Kubrick...

After an appointment to a high-profile federal position that was truncated by a conservative takedown, Yosi Sergant was back in his element last night: In this case, a former Big Lots in Hollywood. White-hot fluorescent lighting radiated over hundreds of revelers at Manifest Equality, where Sergant had helped to corral 400 art pieces for sale by artists like Robbie Conal, Tim Biskup, and Ron English to benefit the Courage Campaign, a California-based equal rights network. Cleve Jones, the gay-rights activist portrayed in the film Milk, trembled and pumped his fist in the air as he preached about the origins of the AIDS quilt. Milling in the space, which was ringed with Bill of Rights text, were most of the 170 artists--many of them Sergant's friends--including his most famous and controversial collaborator, Shepard Fairey (aka DJ Diabetic) who was spinning old school hip-hop on turntables in the middle of the floor.

Our friend Bob over at Baby Tattoo shot Fango a note about an art/fashion event they're producing in L.A.
Readers in the Los Angeles area may want to check this one out:
Artists and art voyeurs take note: if you are attracted to the darker things in life, the ringleaders at Dr. Sketchy’s Los Angeles are unleashing a visual thunderstorm at their June life drawing salon. The venue is an underworldly lair called Medusa Lounge. Models Julie Bolene and Lavendar La Rue will be posing in unsettling fashions by Louis Fleischauer of Amf Korsets. And tunes will be provided by artist Tim Biskup’s alter ego, DJ Alphabeast. Expect an experience somewhere between Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” and Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser”. 21 and up. http://www.drsketchyla.com.

Premiering at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 13, The Vader Project features 100 reimagined Darth Vader helmets created by some of today's most talked-about underground and pop surrealist painters, artists and designers. Dov Kelemer, who curated the project along with Sarah Jo Marks of Dke Toys, notes that "it's because of trailblazing artists like Andy Warhol that The Vader Project can even exist today. We couldn't be more honored to be showcasing The Vader Project at the Warhol."
From their website, here's a brief history: "The Vader Project originally premiered at Star Wars Celebration IV in Los Angeles in May 2007. From there it traveled to Star Wars Celebration Europe in London in June 2007. July 2007 brought 10 new helmets to the Star Wars Pavilion at the famed San Diego Comi-Con International. Then in July 2008, 13 Japanese artists joined forces with the existing Vader Project when their helmets premiered at Star Wars Celebration Japan.
