PETA has found its 2023 Person of the Year in James Gunn.
The animal rights organization has singled out the blockbuster filmmaker, who stepped in last year as co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, for his use of CGI animals like Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The third installment of the Marvel Studios franchise came out in May and has since grossed upward of $845 million at the global box office. It now ranks No. 4 on the year’s highest-grossing films.

Director James Gunn has been named PETA’s 2023 Person of the Year. Per the animal rights organization, Gunn has been selected “for using impressive and stunningly well-crafted CGI animals to inspire tens of millions of moviegoers—who flocked to theaters to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’—to have compassion for the millions of animals killed by experimenters in laboratories.”
The third installment of “Guardians of the Galaxy” explains Rocket Raccoon’s origin story as a test subject in a lab, alongside other animals.
“By telling the story of the millions of vulnerable animals abused in experiments, James Gunn has shown himself to be a true animal guardian,” says PETA president Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is delighted to honor him for encouraging exactly what the world needs: empathy for all living beings.”
Gunn also adopted his dog, Ozu, in May 2022 and promoted #AdoptDontShop on each post related to his dog’s journey.

Ingrid Newkirk has no plans to retire. Having just turned 74, the president of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which she co-founded in 1980 with fellow activist Alex Pacheco, has seen plenty of changes in how we value the lives and wellbeing of non-human creatures. Fur coats are no longer the coveted status symbols they once were, veganism and vegetarianism are mainstream, and circuses have stopped exhibiting elephants in chains.

The new mom showed up to the Paris show wearing a black velvet gown that featured a hyperrealistic, life-sized lion head atop her shoulder. Her elaborate ensemble was a pre-release from the couture collection that debuted on the runway that evening, inspired by Dante’s Inferno.

Just weeks after being crowned a five-time world champion, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has added another impressive accolade to his growing collection: PETA U.K.’s 2018 Person of the Year Award.
Hamilton — whose Instagram bio reads, “[Plant] Based Diet. Love Animals” — regularly shares photos of his protein-packed vegan meals online and encourages his 7.9 million followers to get on track when it comes to caring about animals and the environment by putting the brakes on their consumption of meat, egg, and dairy “products” in order to get on the road to good health and leave the other contenders in the dust.

Television icon Bob Barker has been full-on for animal rights and has helped PETA every step of the way for 10 years.
To mark the milestone, PETA has named a horse rescued from India’s carriage-horse industry in The Price Is Right host’s honor. Named “Mr. Barker” — “Bob” to his caretakers — the lucky horse has “come on down” from hard labor on the streets and is now retired, like his namesake human, although in his case that means spending the rest of his life at a tranquil sanctuary.
“We love this man, but what do you give someone who has everything and gives his all to animals? But is this mass adoration skewed? Does Jennifer Lawrence simply get away with the same things that make other celebrities sweat?

12 horses, three cows, nine geese, two goats and 70 sheep among participants in Isles of Wonder-themed event
The director of the London 2012 opening ceremony, Danny Boyle, has moved to assuage concerns about the welfare of animals who will feature in his £27m show by promising to remove them from the stadium early and ensure they do not face a grisly end afterwards.
In response to concerns raised by six animal welfare groups, Boyle has sent a letter to Peta's founder Ingrid Newkirk to offer a range of assurances over plans to use live animals in his Isles of Wonder-themed opening ceremony.
After revealing this month that 12 horses, three cows, two goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, nine geese, 70 sheep and three sheepdogs would be part of the opening scene, animal rights campaigners claimed it could breach the Animal Welfare Act by subjecting them to undue distress.

Jennifer Lawrence may be the star of the biggest movie in the world and a flawless imaginary Bff, but she is not above PETA's scorn. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lawrence revealed that she did, indeed, gut a squirrel for a scene in "Winter's Bone."
You'll recall that she was nominated for an Academy Award for that role, so the ick-factor was sufficiently balanced out by, you know, getting to go to the Oscars. "I should say it wasn't real, for PETA--but screw PETA," Lawrence joked.
Needless to say, PETA does not like being screwed (though, Peeta might appreciate it, hardy-har).
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk responds: "She's young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart. As Henry David Thoreau said, 'The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest.' We are told that this squirrel was hit by a car, but when people kill animals,...

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has spoken out against The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence for comments she made regarding her killing of an animal. The actress recently revealed to Rolling Stone that she skinned a live squirrel as part of her role in the 2010 film Winter's Bone, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. "I should say it wasn't real, for PETA. But screw PETA," Lawrence explained when asked if the scene in question had been faked. Jennifer Lawrence is about to learn what it's like to have every little comment said in passing scrutinized -- yes, she's a bona fide star.
The actress was dubbed "the coolest chick in Hollywood" by Rolling Stone, and in the magazine's latest issue she recounts her on-screen squirrel-skinning scene in the 2010 movie "Winter's Bone."
"I should say it wasn't real, for PETA. But screw PETA," she told the magazine.
Lawrence's interview has been on newsstands since March 30, but the comment went unnoticed until it was picked up by a hunting magazine, which praised Lawrence for the comment.
In response to the actress's comment, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk told Gothamist, "[Lawrence] is young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart. If you’ve been wondering why all the kids in your neighborhood have been skinning tiny woodland animals for fun, you have no one to blame but Ms. Jennifer Lawrence herself, who cracked wise about her squirrel disemboweling scene in Winter’s Bone in her recent Rolling Stone interview. “I should say it wasn’t real, for PETA,” Lawrence joked. “But screw PETA.” Mwuh oh! Sounds like someone is looking to start an animal rights fight! Alternately, someone at Rolling Stone forgot the second “e” in Jennifer’s Hunger Games fan fiction fantasy. Can’t we pretend she was referring to Peeta? Kill two birds with one stone? Except not literally because that would just tick off PETA even more?
After peeping Jennifer’s comments, Gothamist couldn’t help but see what PETA had to say about it. “She’s young and the plight of animals somehow hasn’t yet touched her heart,...

British royal Catherine, Duchess Of Cambridge is at the centre of an extraordinary spat between animal rights bosses and a disgraced former politician over a photograph of her wearing fake fur.
Prince William's wife was pictured in London earlier this month wearing a coat with a synthetic fur lining, but the photo was seized on by officials at the International Fur Trade Federation.
Executives at the organisation posted the image on its Facebook.com page alongside a caption stating the duchess was wearing a "classy fur-lined coat".
But bosses at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) confirmed with the royal's office that the garment was fake fur - and founder Ingrid Newkirk has fired off a letter to Iftf boss Mark Oaten, who quit as a Member of Parliament in the U.K. in 2006 over a rent boy scandal.
In the letter, Newkirk threatens legal action if the image is not removed from the social networking website, writing, "The Duchess' office has confirmed in a letter to PETA that 'Her Royal Highness was not wearing fur. The coat was not lined with fur'. We therefore insist that you remove the photo from your social media page and issue an immediate public retraction of your claim.
"To state that the Duchess is wearing fur is not only false but offensive... To portray the new Duchess wearing something so blatantly cruel and contrary to her country's values is insulting."
Oaten resigned as a politician after it emerged he'd cheated on his wife with a male prostitute.

PETA has a new project on the horizon and they want Oj Simspon's house for it. Simspon is current serving time for armed robbery and his Maimi mansion is facing foreclosure. But, PETA has some interesting plans for the property. They want to turn it into a "Meat is Murder" museum to promote a vegetarian lifestyle.
"Our museum will remind visitors that violence may not always be preventable but that it sometimes can be prevented and that non-violence begins on our plates," said Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA. "For instance, many wonderful flesh-and-blood individuals, who feel pain and fear as acutely as humans do and who value their lives in much the same way, are knifed to death every day for nothing more than a fleeting taste of flesh. London, Jan 3: Singer Morrissey has expressed his joy after being named as PETA's 'Person of the Year'.
The vegetarian rocker's highly public stunts in support of animal rights earned him the 2011 honour from PETA bosses last week.
"I am honoured beyond words to be named as PETA's Person of the Year! Higher praise is hard to come by! I make no sensational claims for myself... I simply say 'No' to any form of animal suffering, and to the execution of innocent beings," he wrote in a letter to PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk.
"PETA remains indefatigable and visionary, and together we have the executioners on the run," he added.
The former 'Smiths' star has vowed to continue his campaigning stance this year too.

Nick Cannon has assured fans a stunt showing a pet dog in the skies above New York City was a prank, after angry animal rights activists took aim at him.
Mariah Carey's husband detailed the joke on his 92.3 Now FM morning radio show on Thursday, claiming the incident had gone awry because the pooch, named Charlie Roo and belonging to his co-host Sarah Lee Owensby, had since gone missing.
Video footage posted on the radio station's website appeared to show a small dog attached to balloons, floating up into the clouds before disappearing from view - and campaigners at People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA) lashed out at Cannon.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk raged, "If bad taste were a crime, we'd be going to jail with Nick, but joking about killing a dog, a kid, an old person - anyone - isn't cool when there's always the danger that some numbskull will do it for real."
But Cannon has played down the stunt, insisting he "really loves dogs" - and revealing the prank involved a stuffed animal, not a real pooch.
In a video shot prior to the incident, he says, "I won a bet with Sarah Lee, and I'm about to play the meanest joke on her ever. This whole time I've been acting like I don't like dogs, but I really love dogs. I'm a dog person... But I'm pretending that I want to float Charlie Roo with balloons!
"I'm not really gonna float a dog. I'm gonna float a stuffed animal that looks just like Charlie Roo."...

Washington, Oct 14: The animal rights group PETA has slammed the personal physician of the late singer Michael Jackson for testing the powerful anesthetic propofol on beagles.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in an exclusive interview to RadarOnline.com slammed Dr. Conrad Murray, who is accused of killing Jackson, for using the harmful drug on beagle dogs by his attorneys to build their defense for him.
"Dr. Conrad Murray and his defense team should do time for this act alone. Poisoning and killing dogs will not change what is already known about propofol-its hazards are well documented," Newkirk said.
A source very close to Dr. Murray revealed the fact about the test in his interview.
"A study was done on Beagle.

The Hangover Part II director Todd Phillips says he was just monkeying around when he told EW (in our current cover story) and another publication that the film’s scene-stealing, drug-dealing capuchin monkey, Crystal, had been taught to smoke cigarettes for the film and then gotten addicted to them. The truth, according to Phillips and Warner Bros. is that, while Crystal appears to smoke in the film, she never actually held a lit cigarette on the film’s set — the smoke was added digitally in post-production. Still, animal rights advocates aren’t amused. A spokesperson for the American Humane Association,...

The Hangover sequel will not come with a thumbs up from the American Humane Association - because director Todd Phillips refused to let officials onto his set in Thailand.
Filmmakers using animals like to feature the Aha's stamp of approval during the end credits of movies to assure cinemagoers the creatures weren't harmed or abused in any way during the making of the project.
But Phillips decided he didn't need the organisation's Ok, even though a capuchin monkey features heavily in the new comedy.
Aha officials tell Entertainment Weekly they offered to visit the set in Thailand, but were turned down.
It now appears the director could have used their help after upsetting animal rights groups by joking his monkey was taught to smoke for the film.
Phillips has since backtracked and executives at Warner Brothers have assured film fans and creature lovers alike the ape never held a lit cigarette, adding that smoke was digitally added.
But that's not enough for activists animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - they are upset a monkey was used in the film at all.

The pop star has explained she donned the gown, which came with a "beef clutch" and a headpiece, to make the point that she's not "a piece of meat". But PETA chief Newkirk isn't happy.
A spokeswoman tells WENN, "Ingrid did send Lady GaGa a private letter inviting her to a vegan dinner. We know her to be a kind person from her previous anti-fur statements, and we hope that she takes Ms. Newkirk up on the offer."...

Lady GaGa has angered animal rights activists after posing in meat-style clothes for the second time in a week. The "Poker Face" hitmaker attracted criticism earlier this month when she posed in a bikini made from slabs of beef for the cover of Japan's Hommes Vogue magazine.
But she was unrepentant at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, September 12, repeating the stomach-churning stunt in a dress apparently fashioned from strips of red meat - and with a steak balanced on her head. Animal rights workers have blasted Gaga yet again, urging her to ditch the meat-based clothing before she alienates all her vegetarian fans.
Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, says, "In that business Lady GaGa has a hard time being 'over the top' and wearing a dress made out cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should...

Lady Gaga may have been trying to prove a point in her Franc Fernandez-designed meat dress Sunday night at the VMAs, but the point was not well-received by PETA, who released a statement reacting to Gaga's last look of the night.
"After time spent under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling in maggots," the group told TMZ on Monday (September 13), just hours after Lady Gaga accepted an award from Cher in the provocative outfit.
This isn't the first time PETA has been critical of Gaga's wacky use of meat for her forward-thinking fashions. After appearing on the...

Lady Gaga is known for pushing the limits of fashion, but has she gone too far? The chart-topping artist appears in Vogue Hommes Japan, Vol. 5, wearing a bikini made entirely of raw meat.
Gaga is seen posing nearly-nude in the mag with her platinum blond bob slicked back, scarlet lips, and strategically placed slabs of raw beef.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was quick to condemn the bloody bikini.
"Oh, Lady Gaga's job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement to ...
