With “Leo,” Indian director Lokesh Kanagaraj adds another “badass” to the growing network of formidable action heroes he calls the “Lokesh Cinematic Universe.” How do we know this guy’s a badass? Because the Tamil film’s techno soundtrack tells us so, chanting “Leo Das is a badass!” before even establishing who Leo Das is. By this time, the character in question has already wrestled a wild hyena into submission with his bare hands. He goes by the name Parthiban, not Leo Das, but signs are clear that he knows how to punch, kick and shoot his way out of a jam.
“Badass” is one of those out-of-touch grandpa words: a stock description of septuagenarian tough guys like Liam Neeson and Samuel L. Jackson whose violent deeds seem to clash with their surface appearance. It doesn’t usually apply to nepo villains like Leo, who’s more of a flash-mobster than an actual gangster,...

Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj loves a bit of pastiche. Ostensibly remaking influential Western films like “Sorcerer” and “Assault on Precinct 13” with his beloved 2019 hit “Kaithi”, he’s a filmmaker brave enough to acknowledge his influences while also putting a gutsy Indian spin on the material. Now, he’s back with “Leo”, an action thriller that states in an opening quote from Kanagaraj himself that this is his tribute to David Cronenberg’s Canadian mystery thriller “A History of Violence”. It’s a bold move to prepare your audience for the twists and turns that might lie ahead by saying the story you’re about to tell will hit many of the same beats as a film they might well have seen, yet Kanagaraj adds so much to Cronenberg’s most stripped-back work that any core story elements are changed completely into something wholly more bombastic.

The long-awaited spy thriller Dhruva Natchathiram, starring Vikram in the lead role, has undergone some changes in its cast and crew. According to reports, actress Aishwarya Rajesh, who was supposed to play one of the female leads opposite Vikram, has been removed from the film. The reason for her exit is not clear, but some sources claim that it was due to the delay in the film’s release and her prior commitments.
To confirm this news, Sony Music South, the music label of the film, has released a new version of the song Oru Manam, which was earlier released as the first single from the film. The new version has cut out all the scenes featuring Aishwarya Rajesh and Vikram, and has added some extra scenes between Ritu Varma and Vikram. The song, composed by Harris Jayaraj and sung by Shashaa Tirupati and Karthik, is a romantic melody that...
