“Doctor Who’s” Ncuti Gatwa just faced off against the franchise’s wackiest, most over-the-top villain yet. And that was before they started singing.
Enter “RuPaul’s Drag Race” superstar Jinkx Monsoon as Maestro.
Those familiar with Monsoon’s game wouldn’t expect anything else from her: the beloved two-time “Drag Race” winner is currently taking Broadway by storm, wowing audiences as Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors” opposite Corbin Bleu. This summer, she will return to “Chicago,” reprising her role as Mama Morton after she became the cast’s first drag performer in 2023.
And she’s not done dreaming big — Monsoon’s still got her sights set on becoming a Disney Villain one day. “I’m available! People know how to get in contact with me. I got a great laugh, and I can sing. I was raised by Ursula the sea witch,” she says.

A few months ago, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard appeared on The View after she was paroled from prison.
While she did not make another appearance on The View, recent events in her life prompted Joy Behar to bring her up again.
Joy got into trouble with fans for saying that Gypsy-Rose had no choice but to kill her mother and needed to be reminded by Ana Navarro that “murder is wrong” when Gypsy-Rose was on the show.
Gypsy-Rose has separated from her husband of two years just months after being released from prison and has found a new boyfriend, and the ladies on The View all have opinions.
People reported that Gypsy-Rose is back with an ex-fiance, and the ladies had a field day talking about “prison love.”
In a clip that Joy introduced on the show, Gypsy-Rose is heard saying she is “hopeful for the life I am going to make.

Here it is! Our first look at Disney Junior’s Ariel, the latest adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
Not too long ago, some stills from the series appeared online, but I thought the show had been scrapped. Boy, was I wrong… It’s coming to Disney Junior, Disney Junior on Demand, and Disney Now.
Based on the newly released teaser trailer, this show makes several interesting artistic choices. Some characters look familiar, while others look like they were recycled from other Disney Junior shows.
Sebastian’s horrific, ultra-realistic design from the 2023 film is gone. Instead, Disney Junior has decided, in this instance only, that his classic look is better. Of course. It makes sense.
But what of the rest of the cast? Flounder? King Triton? Ursula?

Ursula, typically presented as a fabulously menacing sea witch, is now (gasp!) a mentor to young Ariel. The teaser includes a shot of Ariel and her friends taking part in Ursula’s “magic camp,” where she will presumably school them in witchcraft. Watching Ariel greet her as “Tante Ursula!” with a big smile on her face will surely...

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

Disney's live-action reimaginings of beloved classics have made it their mission to update the story's more outdated ideals and expand the canvas of who is being represented on screen and how. Dating back to their first feature in 1937, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," the characters in Disney's animated films are mostly white, always straight, and follow the same damsel in distress narratives. The movies reflected the more conservative values of the time.
But today, as society continues to evolve, these new takes on classic fairy tales take many steps to diversify. The remakes give the princesses more chutzpah, allowing them to save themselves without needing the prince. "Beauty in the Beast" made LeFou openly gay (although it is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment). Oh, The Little Mermaid, that nostalgic splash from the past where sea creatures sing better than most humans and sea witches have more wardrobe changes than a pop diva. Let’s dive right in and talk about Ursula’s lesser-known, yet equally fabulous alter ego, Vanessa. You will probably laugh the first time Alejandro (Julio Torres) walks though the frame in Problemista, seemingly bouncing off the ground before gliding across it, almost as if he were walking on eggshells—or paintings of them. (More on those in a bit.) Which makes sense, given that this aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who’s looking for a co-signer for his visa so that he can remain in the United States is very wary of angering the powers that be who are holding him back from his dreams in both visible and invisible ways.
But somewhere around the fourth or fifth time that Torres performs this dormouse shimmy in his feature-length directorial debut, the gag lapses into the grating. It’s a tale as old as time: a young musician leaves their life behind with a bag on their back and a burning desire to find inspiration away from society. Phoebe Nir’s “gonzo female desire musical” “Eco Village,” however, is far from your conventional Age of Aquarius funfair about a hippie-adjacent community in the woods.
Nir’s feature debut is adapted from her eponymous Off-Broadway play and has its world premiere in the Bright Future strand of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Speaking exclusively with Variety, the playwright-turned-filmmaker says the film came out of a wish to be honest about how it feels to fall madly in love with someone who is bad for you.
In the film, “Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always” breakout Sidney Flanigan is Robin, a musician who hitchhikes to the titular village run by Ursula (indie veteran Lindsay Burdge) in search of pastures new. Instead...

For those of a certain age, Pat Carroll will forever be synonymous with her voice role as the fabulous sea witch Ursula in Disney's animated "The Little Mermaid." However, for those of another certain age, their memories of Carroll will forever be entwined with her career as a mainstay of 20th-century television comedy thanks to her appearances on variety shows like "The Carol Burnett Show" and her stint as Shirley Feeney's ever-critical mother on "Laverne & Shirley."
Or maybe you're a weirdo who was reared on animated "Garfield" holiday specials and associate her with Jon Arbuckle's piano-pounding, chainsaw-swinging grandmother with the abs of steel. I wouldn't know anything about that.
As fate would have it, Carroll nearly voiced Jane Jetson on Hanna-Barbera's futuristic cartoon sitcom "The Jetsons," a role that would've existed at the nexus between her animated ventures and her run as a linchpin of live-action TV burlesque...

Studio Ghibli films take us on awe-inspiring journeys to other realms where cutesy animals and cozy vibes intersect with religion, environmentalism, and Japanese history. But this mix of child-like curiosity and mature contemplation doesn’t totally account for the studio’s sizable queer fanbase. And still, there’s something about Ghibli specifically that resonates with queer people, despite there being little obvious representation to speak of across the studio’s forty-year history.
On the face of it, much of this appeal can be chalked up to Ghibli’s fiercely strong female protagonists. Although the likes of Kaguya, Arrietty, and Nausicaä don’t actively identify as queer, gay audiences will happily follow them to hell and back. Like flying machines and delicious food porn, gay icons in this vein are woven throughout the studio’s tapestry, but only if you’re actively looking for them. After following her Oscar-winning directorial debut “Promising Young Woman” with the star-studded comedy of manners “Saltburn,” it’s safe to say that Emerald Fennell’s filmmaking career is off to a good start. And if the British hyphenate gets her way, her resume might soon include an entry in cinema’s most beloved prehistoric franchise.
In a new interview with Deadline, Fennell was asked about her dream projects as a filmmaker and actress. While she acknowledged that she has not suffered from a lack of creative freedom in her directing career, Fennell said that she dreams of putting her own subversive spin on a “Jurassic Park” movie.
“I honestly feel that I’ve been so lucky. I’ve been able to make my dream projects already,” Fennell said. “But my favorite film of all time is ‘Jurassic Park,’ so I would love to get in on the dinosaurs. Well, first and foremost,...

Following her Best Original Screenplay win for Promising Young Woman, Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s sophomore feature, presents a gothic tale of obsession and excess, starring Barry Keoghan as Oliver, a social-climbing Oxford student obsessed with the aristocratic Felix (Jacob Elordi). The multi-hyphenate Fennell also pops up as the pregnant Midge doll in Barbie and is co-penning the upcoming John Wick spinoff Ballerina. Here, she agrees to revisit some best memories, or, as she puts it, “rummage around those skeletons.”
Best Advice I Ever Received
After the incredible surprise and joy of winning an Academy Award two years ago, I was lining up for the Porta-Potty because it was Covid times and things were like a wedding. Frances McDormand was queuing behind me, and I was holding the Oscar, completely shell-shocked. She saw me and she leaned in said, “Do you want to know my advice?” And I said, “Yes, please.

Disney continues its tradition of releasing a new animated film over the holiday. Generally this release strategy has paid off with hits such as Frozen (2013- $67.3 million domestic opening), Moana (2016- $56.6 million domestic opening), Coco (2017- $50.8 million domestic opening), Ralph Breaks The Internet (2018- $56.2 million domestic opening) and Frozen II (2019- $85.9 million domestic opening). Of course the past few years saw those stellar Disney openings drop off a bit with 2021’s Encanto starting off with $27.2 million, although that movie really caught on when it hit hime video/ streaming. The same can’t be said for last years flat out bomb, Strange World which opened with just $12.1 million and finished with only $37.9 million.
This year Disney looks to right the ship with Wish, the story of a girl who wishes upon a star and that star comes to life. Basically the story Disney has been pitching us for the better part of a century!

The cast of Friends used collective bargaining to level out their salaries. As an ensemble cast, they wanted to be treated as equals as their wages grew from $22K per episode to $1M. Each cast member of Friends earned around $90 million in base salary alone from the show before the addition of any backend bonuses and ongoing royalties from syndication, racking each actor up an impressive net worth. For 10 seasons, the Friends cast was considered the gold standard of sitcom television, but where do they stand financially today? Here is the net worth of the Friends cast ranked from richest to poorest.

It’s been revealed that newcomer Maia Kealoha will play Lilo in Disney’s upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch remake. The news was first reported by Knight Edge Media and later confirmed by THR.
Maia Kealoha has no acting credits to her name, so landing a leading role in a major Disney movie will make for quite the debut. The original Lilo & Stitch film told the story of a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo and an extraterrestrial dog-like creature known as Experiment 626. He’s soon given the name Stitch after being adopted by Lilo. Although Stitch is a force of chaos and destruction, he eventually develops a close bond with Lilo. Together, the pair avoid the pursuing aliens who have been dispatched to capture him. The film spawned several direct-to-video sequels as well as a couple of TV shows.

Disney’s live-action take on The Little Mermaid has been cleared for theatrical release in China, as has Fast X — the penultimate installment in Universal’s long-running Fast & Furious action franchise. Dates are still to be set for both films in the market which has increasingly been handing out day-and-date releases for Hollywood titles even if audiences have been somewhat tepid of late. Hope springs.
The Little Mermaid, directed by Rob Marshall and starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, begins overseas rollout on May 24 and swims to North America on May 26.
Fast X, from director Louis Leterrier, goes a week earlier with international play revving up on May 17 and the U.S. and Canada joining on May 19. The Fast movies have been major attractions in China with the franchise (including Hobbs & Shaw) grossing over $1.2B since Fast & Furious 6 in 2013. I can’t say I ever would have expected to hear that Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson would direct a live-action/hybrid reimagining of The Aristocats for Disney, but here we are. Deadline reports that Questlove will be getting behind the camera for The Aristocats, which was first revealed more than a year ago.
The original 1970 movie revolved around a family of Parisian felines who discover that they’re set to inherit a fortune from their owner. But when a jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country, they must find their way back home with the help of a smooth-talking tomcat. Will Gluck (Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway) and Keith Bunin (Onward) are set to pen the script for the live-action adaptation of The Aristocats, with Gluck also producing through his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner. In addition to directing The Aristocats, Questlove will also executive produce the project as well as oversee the music.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the Oscar-winning director of “Summer of Soul,” is helming a remake of “The Aristocats” for Disney.
Similar to “Sonic the Hedgehog” or “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the adaptation of “The Aristocats” will be a blend of live action and CGI.
Thompson, the drummer of the Roots, is also executive producing and overseeing music for the film. As previously announced, “Peter Rabbit” filmmaker Will Gluck and Pixar’s “Onward” writer Keith Bunin are adapting the screenplay.
Tarik Trotter, Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman will serve as executive producers. Gluck, via his production company Olive Bridge, is producing along with Thompson’s Two One Five Entertainment.
Originally released in 1970, “The Aristocats” centers on a family of pampered felines — mother Duchess and her three kittens Berlioz, Marie and Toulouse — who live in Paris and are expecting to soon inherit a massive fortune. But when their owner’s jealous butler learns of their inheritance,...

Oscars stalwarts may not have appreciated that “Little Mermaid” trailer-reveal moment from the Academy Awards stage, but ABC’s ad-sales team sure did.
The network pitched all of the movie studios on a sponsored-integration opportunity in which actors associated with their brands could could come out onto the Oscars stage and speak about a project before throwing it to commercial. Only Disney Studios and Warner Bros. took them up on the offer. This was actually the third year of sponsored integrations at the Oscars, which are broadcast annually on ABC.
Disney went the largest, bringing out stars of the upcoming, live-action “Little Mermaid,” Halle Bailey (who plays Ariel) and Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), to intro the film’s official trailer. After their brief time on stage, the Oscars cut to an announced commercial break in the Dolby Theatre and rolled the two-minute, 20-second trailer for viewers at home.
