“American Idol” marked its 20th birthday on Monday night with “The Great Idol Reunion,” a one-hour special featuring past “Idol” contestants and judges and celebrating the show’s history, both during its years on Fox and its current home on ABC.
“Tonight we are opening the Idol yearbook,” said host Ryan Seacrest as he revealed the “Idol” VIP area, which included such familiar faces as Tamyra Gray, Pia Toscano, Anthony Federov, Brooke White, Justin Guarini, William Hung, and Seacrest’s unforgettable frosted hair.
Wasting no time getting to Hung, whose name is “synonymous with ‘American Idol,'” noted Seacrest, he returned to the stage to reprise his epic Ricky Martin performance of “She Bangs” as former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson felt right at home alongside the current panel of Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
In classic Abdul form, she kicked into Paula-speak, which fans surely fondly remember.

Once on This Island is shoving off for good soon. The show, which won this year’s Tony Award for Best Revival, will stage its final Broadway performance January 6, its producers said today.
After closing night, it will have played 458 performances and 29 previews. A national touring production will launch in fall 2019, with details Tba.
“It has been a great privilege to bring Lynn Ahrens’ and Stephen Flaherty’s groundbreaking show back to Broadway under Michael Arden’s incredible direction,” the producers said. “Michael’s brilliant staging, along with the perfect cast and a revolutionary design, are the reasons that the show won the Tony Award and received critical acclaim, and ran as long as the first production in 1990, again delighting audiences for more than 450 performances.”

Season 10 of American Idol. Top 4 results night. May 12, 2011.
I remember it vividly, joyfully — but not just because the exceptional Haley Reinhart (who’d been enduring egregious sabotage from judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson) improbably survived over rocker dude James Durbin. Mostly, the date is blazed into my memory because of a surprise delivery I’d received a few hours earlier from the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services: Three-month-old foster twins, ridiculously cute boys whom my husband and I had only learned about earlier that morning.

For the first time this season, the remaining finalists gave three solo performances on American Idol. There were breakups, dedications and makeups. But who will be breaking up with the show tonight?
I'm always wary going into the results show during Top 4 week because there have been some truly shocking eliminations that have happened during this week. Granted, most of them happened in the early years of Idol (Tamyra Gray, La Toya London, Chris Daughtry), but still.

Put away the Kibbles ‘n Bits, because the Dawg has officially left the building. Longtime judge/canine Randy Jackson announced last week he is leaving American Idol after 12 seasons of “Yo! Yo! Yo!” One can only pray the rest of the judges’ panel will shortly follow. The judging has been a major problem for this show ever since Simon Cowell packed up his scary collection of V-neck T-shirts three years ago. Sure, Idol tried to keep viewers interested by bringing in Jennifer Lopez to look gorgeous and Steven Tyler to hit on contestants roughly a third his age, but that never really worked.

The American Idol Judges’ Save is kind of like that panini press in the back of your pantry. It seemed pretty nifty when you got it back in 2009, but you’ve ended up using it only once every 12 months, and now you’re like, “Is it time to put this contraption out on the front stoop and hope somebody takes it off my hands?”
Of course, once you get the thing out and dust it off, you think, “Oooh, I might have a little hunk of gruyere in the cheese drawer. Maybe I should make me a sammie.”
I figured...

Did American Idol make history on Thursday?
The top six contestants of season 12, who performed Wednesday night, included five women and one man, Lazaro Arbos.
Arbos, who has a stutter that seems to disappear when he sings, started off strong in the competition. But in recent weeks, the ice cream scooper from Naples, Fla., flubbed his lyrics and struggled to get positive feedback from judges Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.
Meanwhile, the women – Kree Harrison, Candice Glover, Amber Holcomb, Angie Miller and Janelle Arthur – were doing well, setting up a unique situation for the show: a possible all-female top five.

New judges, new season and a new attitude just might be the right ingredients for this year’s ‘American Idol’ to be its best yet!
I have had the fortune of being in the audience and backstage at American Idol for the past couple years, and seeing how things are working out, this could be the best season yet! After tonight’s Season 12 premiere, you might be agreeing with me. Let me tell you why!
I Hate Nicki Minaj!
I never will understand the phenomenon that is Nicki Minaj, and my dislike for her will be perfect for this year’s show. If you don’t have a villain on any show that you like, then it isn’t reaching its full potential. You can have bad judges, like Ellen Degeneres or Kara DioGuardi, but they were just bad because they didn’t fit the format well.

When American Idol first graced our television screens, no one would have known exactly how much of an impact it would make. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon with everyone and their mothers tuning in every week to see the original group of contestants sing, scream, and shriek. It was the season of the original “shocker” elimination (Tamyra Gray) and the season of the original contestant who just wouldn’t go away (Nikki McKibbin). Of course, when Kelly Clarkson was crowned as the winner of American Idol, the country went wild and to this day she remains relevant in the music industry. Over the years, judges left, viewers diminished, and many thought this show was nearing its end, but as it remains at the top of the ratings list, this show is far from over.

Wednesday night's episode of "American Idol" offered definitive proof of what happens when you give the kids the keys to the Lambo: they crash and burn.
On an evening when the themes were as vague as any we can recall (California Dreamin? Songs You Wish You'd Written?), the top four either went obscure or doubled-down on the most obvious choices possible, which made for an uneven night.
A few things became crystal clear, though: based on the girl squeals, Phillip Phillips could win this thing in a walk-off without singing another note as long as he loses his razor, smiles and keeps clothes shopping at J.C. Penny. Similarly, Joshua Ledet pretty much has it in the bag, while Hollie Cavanagh...

(Click on the photo below to see her performance.)

It's rare to see a Britney Spears song performed "live" by the singer herself -- but last night, Kelly Clarkson gave it a try!Throughout her tour, the original "American Idol" champ has been playing covers of other people's songs during her shows -- and at Tuesday night's L.A. stop of her Stronger tour, she decided to cover Britney's "Till the World Ends.""I thought this would be a fun one you might enjoy," she said before singing. "I know you know this song, I'm expecting everybody on these Os!"She killed it, telling the crowd after "I love that song. I always get this bad taste in my mouth though when I hear Britney Spears because usually she's my cardio music and I frickin hate cardio! I frickin' hate the gym ... the gym can suck it!" During Kelly's L.A. show she also had a parade of special guests including Reba McEntire,...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Jennifer Lopez showed her true colors on Wednesday’s “final judgment” episode of American Idol – a shimmeringly hypnotic hue of emerald green, to be exact.
Indeed, the Gigli star’s sequined dress was so shiny, it actually managed to reflect the image of her “deeply concerned” face and cast lustrous jade pools back onto her throat. It also sent me into a daydream that she was some kind of glamorous alien, just moments away from peeling back the rest of her human skin, revealing a V-like visage, and devouring whole the American Idol contestants who failed to crack the Season 11 Top 24. “I’m sorry baby,...

Season 11 of American Idol kicked off with a reminder that, like East German Olympic speed-skaters of the 1970s, this year’s crop of contestants has been groomed for singing-competition glory with scientific rigor and a singular focus. They’ve been listening to renditions of “A Moment Like This” and “Flying Without Wings” from inside their mothers’ wombs. They executed their first Whitney Houston-style runs before the age of three. And if they’re not up to following in Scotty McCreery’s footsteps, then by golly, at the very least they can ably replace Ryan Seacrest — at half the cost...

As with every American Idol finale, the last performance episode of season 10 is likely to invite plenty of corny moments: I, for one, will be rolling my eyes at Ryan’s inevitable insistence that tonight is The. Most. Important. Night. Of. Lauren. And. Scotty’s. Lives. — as well as Randy’s third-grade vocabulary level, and, well, Scotty’s rolling eyes. But perhaps the most painful moment of tonight’s telecast will be the unveiling of this season’s coronation songs, which typically run the gamut from please-turn-down-the-volume to for-the-love-of-god-shatter-my-television-with-a-baseball-bat-immediately! (And this is coming from the most hardcore of hardcore Idol fans,...

Tonight on American Idol, it will finally come down to the last two contestants — Scotty McCreery versus Lauren Alaina. While it looks like the odds seem skewed in McCreery’s favor according to most of the predicitions out there, we all know that on American Idol you just never know who the hell will end up on top.
After the shocking eliminations of several top favorites this season against all reason, we’re left wondering why we should even try to predict the newest American Idol winner. This is a show where Taylor Hicks — bless him — should never have won and Adam Lambert lost out to that rather bland boy whose name we can never remember.
Still, it should be interesting to watch the final showdown between American Idol’s unlikely top two this season. I’d find it kind of fun if the little blond girl who nearly crawled...

When Tamyra Gray gave birth to daughter Sienna Marie last July, the former American Idol contestant was shocked to find out that, “she looked nothing like me.” Gray and husband Sam Watters‘ first child together was definitely Dad’s twin.
“The only reason you’d know she was mine is if you were at the hospital,” says Gray, 31, with a chuckle. But now, 10 months later, Gray says their daughter is “a good blend of both of us. She’s got his head with my face.”

Now that James Durbin has been rudely booted off of American Idol, we are finding it a bit difficult to figure out who exactly is going to end up in the finals. We have a hard time believing country boy Scotty McCreery has even made it this far, much less that America would vote him to the top. Then again, Lauren Alania and Haley Reinhart aren’t exactly who we imagined would be facing off in the final two either.
American Idol Top 3 - Fox
As much as it seems mind-boggling that Scotty McCreery and his deep throat might take the top Idol prize, we are reminded that a huge portion of the U.S. actually likescountry music. Plus, we guess he is kind of cute in his own way. After all, McCreery has never been in the bottom, but both Alania and Reinhart have. The girls are good, we give them that,...

Almost every season, there’s a shocking fourth place finisher on American Idol. And, last night, James Durbin was the contestant who joined the ranks of Tamyra Gray, Chris Daughtry, and Latoya London by finishing just short of Idol’s hometown visits. But he still went out with a crowd pleaser — singing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” season 10′s rocker amped up his audience interaction, even planting an adorable kiss on his fiancée. Check out his exit performance embedded after the jump. Warning: Bring the Kleenex.

American Idol held its Top 4 results show tonight, and in a most shocking turn of events, the Golden Stools of Advancement replaced the Silver Stools of Potential Doom. Okay, maybe “shocking” isn’t the right word for that development, but what’s a superlative or two when we’re talking about the nation’s biggest, most maddening, most buzzed-about television show?
Perhaps more surprising, however, was the fact that in a season that for a long time looked like it would be best known for the quick and merciless elimination of its female finalists — after all, the first five singers...

The " American Idol " fourth-place curse continues. James Durbin , the rocker born with Tourette's and Asperger's syndromes, was shockingly eliminated from the singing competition. Durbin had never been in the bottom two before Thursday night, and was one of the favorites to win. He exited "American Idol" in fourth place, the same place as previous favorites Tamyra Gray (Season 1), Latoya London (Season 3), and Chris Daughtry (Season 5). At the end of Wednesday night's broadcast, host Ryan Seacrest reminded viewers the importance of voting for their favorites, and cited Daughtry's departure as the reason why. Daughtry would later become one of the most commercially successful "Idol" contestants. Judge Jennifer Lopez was upset by Durbin's elimination and cried after the results were read. The final three are Lauren Alaina , Haley Reinhart , and Scotty McCreery . Did James deserve to go? Tell us in the comments below. Read more...

Imagine watching a boxing match where a fighter gets bound tightly to the corner post, then relentlessly pummeled by his foe. Or a race where one horse is led to the starting gate, only to be pointed in the opposite direction of the remaining runners. Or a figure-skating competition where everyone performs on ice, except for one girl who gets violently hurled into a lake and told by the judges, “Hey, it’s not our fault you couldn’t get the water to freeze!” That’s kind of what Wednesday night’s edition of American Idol felt like, with Haley Reinhart...

Zap2it has been looking back at the best performances from each stage of the "American Idol" finals and now we're taking a gander at the Top 6. This week on "Idol," the contestants are taking on Carole King, but what about the past performances at the Top 6 stage?
Who are you favorites? Vote below. As of this writing, you've voted Carrie Underwood's "Alone" as the best Top 11 performance, David Cook's "Billie Jean" as the best Top 10 performance and David Archuleta's "Smoky Mountain Memories" as the best Top 9 performance, Adam Lambert's "Mad World" as the best Top 8 performance and Archie's "When You Believe" is the best Top 7 performance.
We had forgotten how rough Gloria Estefan week was for Season 3 - so much so that we left it out. And who doesn't love Daughtry showing his sensitive side on Love Songs week? Also, Andrew Lloyd Webber week was...

Pia Toscano's shocking departure from American Idol wasn't the first time a frontrunner has been eliminated unexpectedly early in the competition. In season 1, Tamyra Gray - a soulful singer like Toscano - was voted off in fourth place even though Simon Cowell had called her "world class." Two seasons later, anticipated finalist Jennifer Hudson exited with a seventh place finish, while in season 5, Chris Daughtry's fourth place elimination incited booing from the audience and stunned the judges. Good news for Toscano: Gray, 31, has found success as an actress and singer; Hudson, 29, has won an Oscar and a Grammy; and Daughtry,...

Looking back throughout the last 10 seasons of ‘American Idol,’ it seems like the most talented contestants always get cut before they should!
The world was stupefied when the talented and beautiful Pia Toscano was eliminated from American Idol April 7. However, the 22-year-old belter’s elimination isn’t necessarily the most shocking moment in the show’s history. Remember when Kris Allen beat Adam Lambert in season eight? What about when Chris Daughtry got the boot before Katharine McPhee in season five? Check out our Top 10 most shocking moments in Idol history and tell us which one surprised you most!
1. Pia Toscano: With two-to-one odds of winning the competition, no one expected Pia Toscano, 22, to be the ninth contestant eliminated on Season 10. Everyone thought she was a fan favorite!
2. Adam Lambert: When Ryan Seacrest announced Kris Allen was the season eight winner of American Idol, he was shocked. Everyone...

It’s been almost 24 hours since what I would argue was American Idol‘s all-time worst results-show telecast — hey, at least Chris Daughtry and Tamyra Gray made it all the way to fourth in their respective seasons! — and I’m still reeling. How did the season’s most consistent (and arguably most gifted) vocalist, Pia Toscano, get booted so prematurely?

Pia Toscano's American Idol ouster felt like a rerun of Tamyra Gray's. And Jennifer Hudson's. And… Well, the truth is Idol has a long history of exits that outraged as much as they surprised. So, in the name of moving things along, here are the five biggest stunners since 2006: Note: Last night's jaw-dropper is not included. We're still processing. 1. Chris Daughtry?! Guess who became a hot Twitter trending topic last night, post-Pia? Yes, this presumptive winner of season five (who finished fourth) is the ultimate reminder that one should not presume anything about Idol. 2. Melinda Dolittle?! So, the season-six competition was supposed to come down to this veteran backup...
