The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

Based on their outstanding careers forged on international co-productions, 24 up-and-coming players in the European film industry have been selected to take part in European Film Promotion's (Efp) networking platform Producers on the Move. Now in its 15th year, Efp spotlights emerging European producers at the Cannes Film Festival from May 17-19 and helps them embark on successful cooperation with their similarly ambitious Producers on the Move colleagues from all over Europe.
The programas been financially supported by the Media Program (2007-2013) of the European Union and the participating Efp member organizations who each made a careful selection of their national participants according to specific criteria.
The schedule of Producers on the Move includes working sessions, one-to-one speed-dating meetings and various opportunities to exchange knowledge and follow up discussions on future projects. In addition, Efp will be teaming up with the European cultural channel Arte and the pan-European co-production fund Eurimages for Producers on the Move. For the first time, Eurimages has prepared a case study exclusively for Efp's program to be discussed under the direction of Eurimages Executive Director Roberto Olla.
He points out the importance of programs such as Producers on the Move:
“This is the 4th consecutive year that Eurimages is involved with this initiative which perfectly marries our objectives of encouraging co-operation between producers so as to stimulate cinematographic co-productions and of promoting their international distribution. Further to the success of the collaboration at the Cannes Festival, the Eurimages Fund has strengthened its partnership with European Film Promotion through other initiatives which also seek to unite professionals from the European film industry in order to participate in its development on an international level.”
Looking back at previous editions, Efp's programme results each year in several new trans-national co-productions and gives the producers a higher profile in Cannes. For 2013, almost all of the participants are still in contact with one another and 17 co-productions are in development.
One recent success story is the coming-of-age feature The Word, directed by Anna Kazejak and co-produced by two Producers on the Move from 2011, Lukasz Dzieciol(Opus Film, Poland) and Jesper Morthorst (Sf Film Production, Denmark). The €1.1m dramedy will be theatre director Stoev’s debut feature and already has Berlin-based Thomas Kufus’ zero one film and Media onboard as partners.

The main prize, the Wemw Development Award, provided by the local regional fund Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund (Fvg), went to Bulgarian producer Martichka Bozhilova and director Galin Stoev for Endless Garden, which is looking for a Belgian co-producer.
The €1.1m dramedy will be theatre director Stoev’s debut feature and already has Berlin-based Thomas Kufus’ zero one film and Media onboard as partners.
Endless Garden had previously been pitched during the Sofia Meetings last March.

Central and Eastern European filmmakers presented 19 projects at various stages of production at Karlovy Vary’s annual Works in Progress initiative.
The popular industry programme at Kviff is in its ninth year, and past films shown as Works In Progress include I Am, Lunacy, Katyn, Tricks, Alois Nebel and My Dog Killer, among many others.
This year’s selection included a standout pitch for The Disobedient [pictured], a Serbian coming-of-age road movie about two 24-year-olds from Tilva Ros producers Mina Djukic (who will direct) and Nikola Lezaic. The film is now in post for autumn delivery after wrapping its shoot in September 2012.
Another promising Serbian title, of a very different flavour, was the crowdpleasing dark comedy Monument to Michael Jackson (working title). The film will be ready to launch this autumn and the footage shown got the day’s only laughs out of the industry-heavy crowd. The film is a co-production with Macedonia and Germany.

Mirjana Karanovic, David Thornton, Here and There Featuring David Thornton, European Film Award nominee Mirjana Karanovic (for Grbavica in 2006), Cyndi Lauper, Branislav Trifunovic, and Antone Pagan, Darko Lungulov’s Here and There was Serbia’s initial submission for the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. (The film was disqualified because it contained too much English-language dialogue.) Here and There follows a jaded middle-aged New Yorker who goes to Serbia to make some quick cash by marrying someone in need of U.S. immigration papers. His plan goes awry when the promised cash never arrives. Meanwhile, a young Serbian immigrant struggles to eke out a living in New York, while desperately trying to bring his girlfriend from Serbia to [...]...

Writer’s block gets all the ink, but in writer-director Darko Lungulov’s feature debut, Robert (David Thornton) has musician’s block. Once a jazz saxophonist, he can no longer pick up his horn or even open the case. Broke and depressed, he is evicted from his dumpy apartment and swiftly overstays his welcome at a friend’s place by drinking all of her booze.
Unshaven and unkempt, Robert even looks like he reeks of smoke from the cigarettes constantly dangling from his lower lip. Thick, wild hair stands on end like that of a troll doll, and Thornton’s hunched shoulders and narrowed eyes convey chronic cynicism.
With no place else to go, Robert accepts an unusual offer from Branko (Branislav Trifunovic), the Serbian immigrant who helps him move. Robert flies to Serbia to marry Branko’s girlfriend Ivana (Jelena Mrdja) so that she can join her beau in the States.

Darko Lungulov's debut narrative feature about a New Yorker who travels to Belgrade is as geographically diverse and sensitive as the city of New York itself won the Best New York Narrative award at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. This year, the Serbian director was back at Tribeca, serving as a juror in the same category. [Note: Here and There had a lovely review in the New York Times.] My life could be divided into "Before Tribeca" and "After Tribeca." A year ago, my ultra-low-budget, shoestring labor of love, the New York story Here and There, won the Best New York Narrative Award at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. A year and 23 international awards later, I am about to start the theatrical run of Here and There in NY and the rest of the country with the opening on May 14 at the Quad Cinema. My first feature will premiere in the ...

The Tribeca Film Festival has handed out its jury prizes, bestowing best narrative feature on Iranian Asghar Farhadi's "About Elly" and best documentary feature on Marshall Curry's Go-Kart doc "Racing Dreams."
Farhadi's tale examines a group of upper-middle-class Iranians on a seaside vacation and the relationships that form among them, while Curry looks at competitive Go-Kart racing among young people who dream of racing cars professionally.
The festival also gave its best new narrative filmmaker prize to Norwegian Rune Denstad Langlo, who directed "Nord," about a skier who has become a recluse, and its best new doc filmmaker award to Ian Olds, whose "Fixer" looks at the killing of an Afghani translator.

When we talk about green card marriages in this country, we're usually thinking about some kind of impoverished Mexican or Eastern European immigrant, desperate to get to this country and marry an American to live off the fat of our land. But what about the other way around? What if a New Yorker-- a sarcastic, dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker-- went to Serbia to marry another man's girlfriend and bring her back to the States? That's the premise of Here and There, Darko Lungulov's film that stars David Thornton as Robert, a New York man who is convinced by his new business partner to travel to Serbia and marry the man's girlfriend. Once he arrives in Belgrade, though, Robert finds himself falling in love with his friend's mother, Olga, a divorcee whose company helps him feel like he's coming back to live. I spoke to Darko and David last week, just...

I know it looks dire as it's 28% lighter (at least so far) and minus an artistic director, but no fear, there's still more to come, and with what's been announced theirs some interesting sounding stuff, especially a film we wrote about briefly called Accidents Happen. Also premiering is the comedy Stay Cool and the Danish film Original, along with the North American premier of The Exploding Girl which we also wrote about.
