Director Christopher McQuarrie on Mission: Impossible 5,
Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is in the throes of getting Mission: Impossible 5, starring Tom Cruise, ready for release at the end of July. But he's taken a bit of time out of his schedule for a question and answer session on Twitter about the movie.
In it, he confirmed that the teaser trailer and name of the movie are due "very soon". We'll also get some idea of the plot for the new film very shortly as well.
In terms of casting, both Paula Patton and Maggie Q were asked to join the cast, but both were unavailable this time. Still, Simon Pegg's Benji sounds like he has an extended role in this one too, with McQuarrie promising that "Benji gets his hands plenty dirty". He also added that we can expect more time with Ving Rhames in the new movie...

Sometimes you just can’t seem to win. From the moment it was announced that an English language retelling of the incredible story around the 20 July plot in 1944 would be mounted, the cynics and the critics began to sharpen their blades, more so after the announcement that Hollywood star Tom Cruise would be playing the lead conspirator Claus von Stauffenberg, apparently based entirely on the two sharing uncannily similar profile shots. It didn’t seem to matter that the hugely successful director-writer team of The Usual Suspects would be bringing such a tale to screen, nor that Bryan Singer would be foregoing cinematic posturing or dodgy stabs at German accents in favor of dryly honest thriller sensibilities. Unfashionable though the opinion seems, amidst the lampooning and exploitative marketing lives and breathes a superbly choreographed and maturely handled slice of incredible history.

I attended a small roundtable with filmmaker and Hollywood's famous go-to scribe Christopher McQuarrie earlier this afternoon to talk about "Jack Reacher," an adaptation of Lee Child's "One Shot".
During the conversation, Graffiti with Punctuation asked about the status of "Mission: Impossible 5" and if McQuarrie had any new updates on "The Wolverine" which he wrote.
I followed that up with a question listing a half dozen projects McQuarrie's name has been attached to in recent years, and I asked what the status of each was. Here's his answers for all of them, plus he also amusingly confirmed he is Not in the running to direct the next "Star Wars" film:
Mission Impossible 5
With "Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol" director Brad Bird confirmed to not be returning, McQuarrie's name became attached as a possible director for a fifth "Mission: Impossible" a few weeks ago. Paramount is reportedly very pleased with...

George Clooney is now attached to "The Monster Of Florence", which has been picked up by Fox 2000, reports Deadline. The film is being scripted by Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects", "The Way Of The Gun") and his friend, Nathan Alexander, with whom he previously teamed for Valkyrie. Based on the besteller by by Douglas Preston (with Italian journalist Mario Spezi), "The Monster Of Florence" would star Clooney as the author who, along with Spezi, tried to bring up evidence against who they felt was responsible for a string of serial murders in Florence that began in the late 1960's....

Deadline has just reported that Fox 2000 has closed a deal to adapt the best selling crime novel The Monster of Florence, with George Clooney attached as the lead. The film will be produced by Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, as well as Grant Heslov and Christopher McQuarrie. Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander are also on board to write the script for The Monster of Florence.
George Clooney is set to play the role of Douglas Preston, who wrote the nonfiction bestseller The Monster of Florence with Italian crime reporter Mario Spezi.
Deadline explains:
Preston is a thriller writer who met Spezi after moving to Italy. Together, they set out to solve a 30-year old serial murder case. Seven couples were savagely murdered between 1974 and 1985 while they sat in cars parked just outside Florence. The trail was cold when Preston moved into a nearby farmhouse and began asking questions. By that time,...

Fox 2000 have acquired the rights to The Monster of Florence, a crime novel written by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi about their real life investigation into the unsolved case of a killer or killers (known as Il Mostro) who murdered 7 couples/14 people between 1974 and 1985. According to THR, George Clooney is attached to produce and star as Preston, an American who teamed with Spezi, a local crime author, to solve the case.
Tom Cruise was interested in bringing the novel to the big screen a couple of years back and hired his Valkyrie screenwriters Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander to work on the script, but the Cruiser seemingly lost interest and the script then found its way to Clooney, who recently filmed The American in Italy (and has a home there) and his producing partner Grant Heslov.

George Clooney, quite busy guy indeed.
So, ladies and gentlemen, check this out: Clooney is now attached to star in Fox 2000’s adaptation of The Monster of Florence, the best-selling book by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi.
And if that sounds familiar to you, let us remind you that once upon a time (actually it was 2008) Tom Cruise acquired the rights to the same novel, and even recruited his Valkyrie screenwriter Chris McQuarrie to write and co-produce a big screen adaptation of the book.
Sound’s like some interesting story…

It’s certainly shaping up to be a good week for monsters. “Monsters” director Gareth Edwards is directing the new “Godzilla,” and now George Clooney is attached to “The Monster of Florence.”
“Florence” is based on the best-selling 2008 book by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi, a true-crime account of Il Mostro, a serial killer (or killers) that murdered over a dozen people from the late ’60s through the mid-’80s. Preston himself ended up being investigated by the police when he was doing research for the book, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The book was initially optioned by Tom Cruise, who commissioned his “Valkyrie” screenwriters Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander to pen the script. The project went into turnaround with the whole MGM financial debacle and is now in Clooney’s lap.

As if George Clooney weren't already one of the busiest men in Hollywood, he's adding another film to his growing to-do list.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox 2000 has acquired the rights to Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi's best-selling book "The Monster of Florence," with Clooney attached to star. "Valkyrie" co-writers Chris McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander are writing the screenplay.
The story is about an investigation into the murderer (or murderers) known as Il Mostro, who killed more than a dozen people between the late 1960s and mid 1980s without being caught. While digging for facts for their book, writers Preston and Spezi were both investigated by the police in connection to the murders. Presumably, Clooney would play one of them.
Tom Cruise had originally optioned the rights to the project for United Artists as his own star vehicle, but the project went into a turnaround after UA had some problems during MGMs restructuring.

George Clooney has signed up to star in 'The Monster of Florence'. The 'American' actor will take the starring role in the film, about a man who writes a book concerning the truth about a series of 30-year-old murders which took place outside the Italian city of Florence between 1974 and 1985. Douglas Preston wrote the book about his own move to Italy with Italian reporter Mario Spezi, chronicling the trouble caused when they begin asking questions. Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander will script the project, while Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen will produce it. 'The Monster of Florence' will see Clooney - who spends the majority of his free time in Italy - film a project in the Mediterranean for the second time following his work on 'The American'. Serial killers will always be fascinating fodder for cinematic storytelling, and this is especially true when the tale is based on a real-life killer who was never caught. Bong Joon-ho’s Memories Of Murder and David Fincher’s Zodiac are probably the two finest examples of the mini-genre, but a new contender has just been announced that combines a strong film-maker pedigree alongside some truly heinous unsolved crimes. The Monster Of Florence is based on the 2008 non-fiction bestseller from Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi, and it explores a series of gruesome killings that took place in Florence, Italy between 1968 and 1985. Sixteen people were killed in all, mostly couples, with the victims typically shot and stabbed multiple times. Many of the women also had their breasts and/or pubic areas mutilated. So that’s pretty effed up and gross. A handful of men were arrested and imprisoned over the years, but the killings continued as they sat in...

Hollywoodnews.com: After a relatively quiet year in which he released only one film (“The American”), George Clooney is diving back into the game with both feet.
The A-list actor-director has been lining up projects over the last few months, with another one dropping this morning. It appears Clooney is attached to star in “The Monster of Florence,” an adaptation of Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi’s best-selling book about Il Mostro, a legendary murderer who killed more than a dozen people from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s without being caught, according to THR.
In a strange twist of fate, both Preston and Spezi were investigated by police as they dug deeper into their own investigation of the cold case.
In addition to starring, Clooney will produce with his partner, Grant Heslov. As of right now, Chris McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander will co-write the “Monster” screenplay.

George Clooney could soon be a serial killer.
The Oscar-winner (for his Supporting Actor performance in 2006's Syriana) is attached to star in The Monster of Florence, based on the book by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. The involvement of Clooney, who's also onboard as a producer, has rejuvinated interest in the project which has once been in development at MGM and for Tom Cruise to star in. Today, the film is at Fox 2000.
The true crime novel examines a series of 16 murders that took place in the beautific Italian city between the years 1968 and 1985. Police believe that the killings were all done by a single person, a serial killer that the local populace refered to as "Il Mostro". The victims were all couples, save for one pair (though the police believe that the murderer mistakenly believed the duo were a couple.)

A couple of years ago it was picked up by United Artists for Tom Cruise, but now Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi's The Monster of Florence seems set to happen at Fox, with George Clooney playing Preston's real-life amateur sleuth. The book concerns Preston's move to Italy, and his burgeoning obsession with a thirty-year old series of unsolved murders. He and his partner Spezi (an Italian reporter) made impressive new inroads into a trail that had gone thoroughly cold, but their investigation ruffled some feathers among the Italian authorities, who at one point even jailed Spezi for being the killer himself (he wasn't).Christopher McQuarrie has been working on the script since the Cruise days, and it's still his version, co-written with Nathan Alexander, that will go before the cameras. McQuarrie will also co-produce. So it's back to Italy for Clooney, following his sojourn there in The American. Is...

It appears everything's going in motion for the novel adapted feature "The Monster of Florence." Fox 2000 just scooped up the film rights to the novel written by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. But that's not the only good thing going for Fox 2000 today. The always devilishly handsome George Clooney is attached to star in the project with Nathan Alexander and Chris McQuarrie penning the adaptation. Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen are producing alongside Grant Heslov and Clooney.Preston and Spezi's book is an investigation into the murderer (or murderers) known as Il Mostro, who killed more than a dozen people from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s without being caught. Tom Cruise's loss may be George Clooney's gain. The "Mission Impossible" star acquired the rights to best-selling novel "The Monster of Florence" in 2008 when he was still head of United Artists. Cruise even recruited his "Valkyrie" screenwriter Chris McQuarrie to write and co-produce a big screen adaptation of the book. When MGM's financial woes effectively shut UA down, the project went into turnaround. Now, George Clooney, his longtime producing partner Grant Heslov and Fox 2000 have come to McQuarrie's rescue. According to The Hollywood Reporter, McQuarrie is now back at work on the screenplay with his "Valkyrie" co-writer Nathan Alexander...

George Clooney has a busy year in 2011. He has a small role in Gravity, he's directing The Ides Of March and he'll also go in front of the camera for Soderbergh's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Now you can add one more project to his list. The star is attached to a new film called The Monsters of Florence, based on the best selling novel of the same name, which tells the story of two men who solved the case of a serial killer by picking up the stone cold trail. Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander will be writing and as of yet, there is no director attached (although with Grant Heslov producing, he could take the director's chair as well).

You might see a lot of George Clooney this year. (In 2010 he was in only The American.) He's set to appear in a small role [1] in Gravity, is directing and will appear [2] in The Ides of March, and has already shot Alexander Payne's film The Descendants. He's also producing [3] an Enron film and might end the year gearing up [4] for Steven Soderbergh's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And now he's attached to The Monster of Florence, an adaptation of the non-fiction best-seller of the same name, written by two men who picked up the stone-cold trail of a serial killer and solved the case. Deadline [5] says that Valkyrie co-writers Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander will write based on Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi's book. Mr. Clooney is attached to play Douglas Preston, who with Mr. Spezi uncovered the identity of the killer who savagely killed seven couples outside...

Fox 2000 has closed a deal that turns the bestselling crime book The Monster of Florence into a star vehicle for George Clooney. Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander are aboard to write the script. Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen of the Jinks/Cohen Company will produce with Smokehouse's Grant Heslov, and McQuarrie. Clooney will play Douglas Preston, who wrote the nonfiction bestseller The Monster of Florence with Italian crime reporter Mario Spezi. By that time, suspects had been let go, and authorities didn't welcome the curiosity of the writer. They threw Spezi in jail and interrogated Preston.

Valkyrie
Directed by: Bryan Singer
Cast: Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp
Running Time: 2 hrs
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: May 27, 2009
Plot: Based on the true story, a proud German military man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise), is loyal to his country before his allegiance to Adolf Hitler (David Bamper). He along with other German politicians and soldiers look to use Hilter’s own emergency plan–known as Operation Valkyrie–to assassinate Hitler and seize control of Berlin.
Who’s It For? First and foremost, it’s a war movie, with enough well-crafted suspense. There isn’t much violence, only one important woman’s role and it also should be in contention for end of the year awards.
Movie: I have said this too many times … World War II will never run out of stories. There are infinite WWII film possibilities and Valkyrie is one of best.

Superlative thriller was oddly ignored by critics and audiences alike, but expertly blends intelligence (courtesy screenwriter Eric Warren Singer’s masterfully-crafted script) and full-throttle action (director Tom Tykwer stages one of the great film shoot-outs in New York’s iconic Guggenheim Museum), making this dynamite thriller reminiscent of the best work from masters such as John Frankenheimer and Robert Aldrich. World War II seems to have generated countless stories about heroism and bravery, stories told for the point of view of the allies and the axis, stories told about life on the homefront and life in the foxhole. As a result, it remains an enduring source of fodder for filmmakers as more and more details come to the surface. Through the 1950s and 1960s, most of the Ww II movies were highly fictionalized accounts and by the 1970s war stories were played out, fewer and further between. In the last decade, we’ve had history to sift through and we now know of Schindler’s List. Valkyrie, Bryan Singer’s entry into the pantheon, intended to tell us of the closest a plot to assassinate Hitler came to working. Presuming you were taught anything about the war in school, you might not even know there were over a dozen attempts...

Chicago – The Blu-Ray release of “Valkyrie” is another case of a disappointing movie being elevated by an excellent home release. With its miscast lead and mediocre screenplay, “Valkyrie” was a near-miss in theaters, but the film looks and sounds great on Blu-Ray and comes accompanied by informative commentaries and featurettes. If you’re a fan, you won’t be disappointed.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 As for the film itself, “Valkyrie” is about the incredible true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) and his ingenious assassination plot targeting Adolph Hitler. The film reenacts the daring operation designed to take out one of the most evil men in history. The film co-stars Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp, Eddie Izzard, and Carice von Houten.

Ever since the debacle of Mi:3, a project which saw Tom Cruise—to put it politely—“released” from his obligations to Paramount, Cruise has had more ups and downs than the stock market. Bouncing straight back after he was prestigiously appointed to head up United Artists, his first act was the somber, snooze inducing political drama Lions for Lambs. Then, out of nowhere, a self-deprecating turn under some seriously unflattering make-up as the foul-mouthed, ball-busting studio mogul behind Tropic Thunder made him credible again.
Now after a long and bloody PR campaign that saw the world’s biggest film star taking to the TV spots to explain why you should go see his movie, Cruise managed to cement his place in a year that was really all about comebacks. And what better way to comeback than to go so against type—the Cruiser flashing those pearly whites against the clammy gray of the Third Reich,...

Chicago – Tom Cruise can be a powerfully vibrant actor in the right material but he’s horrendously miscast in Bryan Singer’s “Valkyrie,” a casting decision amplified by poor direction that drains this true story of an assassination attempt on the life of Adolf Hitler of its inherent power.

The grand idea behind Valkyrie, director Bryan Singer's first non-superhero feature since 1998's Apt Pupil, is "Nazis weren't all bad." Paul Verhoeven successfully mined similar ground in Black Book, and with two of Valkyrie's actors, Carice van Houten and Waldemar Kobus, but there's still plenty of material to explore. With the added resonance of catching Tom Cruise partway through a career resurgence (courtesy of Tropic Thunder) all Singer needed was a taut script to keep the gears moving in time.

- “Hitler is not only bad for the world, he is bad for us Germans. Let’s kill him and get over with this endless war”. That was the ideology that brought Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg to join one of the most famous, and closest of attempts to kill the German dictator in the middle of WWII. There is no surprise in announcing that he and his co-conspirators failed, but at least they tried. Bryan Singer was instantly fascinated with the subject two years ago, when he read a script called Valkyrie -- about Stauffenberg’ story co-written by Nathan Alexander and Christopher McQuarrie. Of course, the script didn't need to make the rounds as McQuarrie a high school friend of Singer and the person who wrote the acclaimed The Usual Suspects. Initially his idea was to take a break from big budget productions and go back to something with a

Christopher McQuarrie technically isn't running United Artists alongside Tom Cruise, but he does seem to be a key element of rebuilding the venerated studio. He's starting things off as the screenwriter for Valkyrie, and has two more projects lined up over there, with more surely to come. So even though McQuarrie won an Oscar in 1994 for writing The Usual Suspects, his best years may still be yet to come. At the moment he's making the rounds as what you might call a Nazi expert, answering press questions about how to write a screenplay about killing Hitler when everyone knows it didn't work, not to mention the notion of making members of Hitler's staff look sympathetic. During a press conference for Valkyrie last week he answered most of the questions lobbed at the panel, which also included his co-writer Nathan Alexander. We've excerpted a few of those questions and answers below.

Now, don’t get me wrong: it’s not exactly a Hogan’s Heroes level of diminution, but there’s something honestly comic-book-esque about Valkyrie. I mean that in a good way, because I adore what director Bryan Singer has done to take stuff that had been considered pulpy prior and turn it intense and serious -- like with his X-Men movies: hello, adamantine-clawed superman as brooding anti-mensch. But Singer has done the opposite, too, returned us to the pulp roots of genres we’d forgotten had ’em: The Usual Suspects is more like something out of a cheap, tawdry magazine from the 1930s than it is like any other crime thriller since the 1950s. And so there’s something in his Valkyrie -- written by Usual Suspects scripter Christopher McQuarrie (with first-timer Nathan Alexander) -- that feels, oddly, like it’s got both things happening at the same time:...
