It’s a huge bummer when a movie wastes incredible talent. Any film that boasts a cast like this, with Michael Caine at the top in a starring role, teaming up with Jim Broadbent, Tom Courtenay, Charlie Cox, Michael Gambon, and Ray Winstone, the final product should be way better. Throw in a quality director like James Marsh at the helm and this sounds like the talents behind an Oscar contender. Well, opening this week, King of Thieves is not that. This heist tale is slowly paced, dull, and a shall of what it could have been. Alas, this was a big time letdown. The film is a “based on a true story” crime drama. Centered on infamous true events in England, we follow a famous thief named Brian Reader (Caine) as he gets back in the game. Mourning the loss of his wife, he begins to pull together a...

Based on infamous true events, a famous thief, Brian Reader (Sir Michael Caine), pulls together a band of misfit criminals to plot the biggest bank heist in British history. The thieves manage to escape with allegedly over £200 million worth of stolen jewels and money. When police are called to the scene and the investigation starts, the cracks between the eccentric gang members begin to show as they row over how to share the goods and become increasingly distrustful of each other.
James Marsh’s King of Thieves, at its fingertips, has jocular and theatrical cockney crime caper in the same vein as Guy Ritchie’s Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Utilising what’s an all-star British cast, primarily made of...

Kellie Shirley has said that while TV and movie actors may be cast in plays for their star power, they will soon be found out if they are not up to it.
The former EastEnders star is currently playing Pauline in One Man, Two Guvnors at London's Haymarket Theatre, a play that has also seen James Corden and Rufus Hound in the lead role of Francis Henshall.
"I think essentially if you're not very good, people aren't going to come and see it," Shirley told Digital Spy.
"I know there's star casting going on, but the thing with this was James Corden is an actor by trade and he happens to be very good at comedy.
"It's like a comedy Hamlet - it's epic. It's a real showy-off part and Owain [Arthur], who plays it at the moment, plays it very differently to James."
She added: "He's Welsh and he plays it very.

Review by Scott Clark of Cinehouse
Melanie (Nora Tschirner) is a young woman living out a dull existence in an English seaside town, her life crawls along until she meets Ray (Rob Knighton in his second feature performance), a recently divorced gangster-type back in town for one last job. Without a doubt the most charming and impressive feature to debut at Eiff this year, one of those films that comes along once in a blue moon and manages to hold its own amongst the vast array of features fighting for the spotlight. It sounds like a screwball gangster flick with a hint of Lost in Translation, which it could be billed as, but you’d be missing the point. Even though it flaunts moments of comedy and does...

The British film Everyone’s Going to Die premiered yesterday at SXSW. It is directed by a directing collective called Jones.

Two lost souls. One last chance.
Melanie’s life in a seaside town is going nowhere until she meets Ray, back in town with a shady job to do. A moment’s escape becomes a chance to save themselves, and each other.
“Everyone’s Going To Die” is a modern British story about coming home, getting by and the redemptive power of feeling you’re not alone. A story where porn hotlines rub shoulders with sexy beavers on rollerskates; where the past is laid to rest, two lives are changed and nobody, finally, is going to die.
The film stars: Nora Tschirner, Rob Knighton, Kellie Shirley, Madeline Duggan and Stirling Gallacher.

Former EastEnders star Kellie Shirley has revealed that she is on the look-out for a "posh" role.
The actress, best known as Albert Square's Carly Wicks, has recently played working-class Londoners in Danny Dyer's film Run for Your Wife and Broadway play One Man, Two Guvnors.
She told Metro: "It'd be nice to play something that was, like, posh London for a change.
"I love playing my chavs and things like that because I find it quite easy to tap into my inner chav but it would be nice to play the odd high-class Londoner."
The 29-year-old maintained: "I am a London girl. I love playing London parts."
Shirley's EastEnders alter ego Carly was last seen in Walford last autumn, having returned to help Shirley deal with the grief of best friend Heather dying.
Dyer's Run for Your Wife premiered at the box office last weekend with a tiny £602 in takings.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by producer Paul Tanter. **there are minor spoilers here. Director: Simon Phillips. Writers: James Crow and Simon Phillips. Cast: Nick Nevern, Kellie Shirley, Jenna Harrison, Con O'Neill, Peter Barrett, Roland Manookian, Lorraine Stanley, Mark Harris, Charlie Bond, Steven Berkoff, and Merveille Lukeba. Tagline: "Hooligan first, cop second." GBH is the latest film to come out of the United Kingdom from actor and director Simon Phillips and distributor Revolver Entertainment. The film is set during the London riots of 2011. In this setting, a love story develops between characters Damien (Nick Nevern) and Louise (Kelly Shirley). Violent events split them apart. The film offers an anti-violent message, but that message might be lost amongst all of the chaos occurring onscreen. Overall, GBH is an entertaining film with only a couple film elements hampering the film's full potential. If you did not know.

In his spare time he is a borderline football hooligan and while on duty he frequently disregards proper rules to either get a friend’s charges lifted or put the boot in on a suspect who he doesn’t like. As tensions in London build towards the riots of summer 2011, Damien tries to keep his building rage under control while trying to establish a relationship with Louise (Kellie Shirley) a new police officer he has been partnered with.

Following on from Paul Tanter’s The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan we’ve got out hands on some exclusive stills from the next film from the team.
GBH marks the directorial debut of Simon Phillips, seen recently leading the comedy How to Stop Being a Loser as well as Tanter’s Jack trilogy, it’ll be interesting to see the energy Phillips brings to the film which, though it may not differ from the stable’s recent output in subject matter, should provide fertile ground to stamp his directing style.
Nick Nevern leads the film with Kellie Shirley and Steven Berkoff heading up the cast. Here’s a synopsis,
GBH is a powerful tale of justice and vengeance starring Damien (Nick Nevern) a London copper with a past he’s trying to forget. Before signing up for the force he ran with a football firm, getting...

Kellie Shirley almost blew up the 'EastEnders' set during her first scene back. The actress makes a shock return to the BBC One soap as her Albert Square alter-ego Carly Wicks and admits shooting the scenes were quite scary. She said: ''I was so excited to make my big entrance back in Walford. But when I read the script and it said Carly would drive around Albert Square in a big truck I thought, 'How am I going to do that?' ''The square is tiny so it's not easy to manoeuvre a great big truck around it, especially when you are as small...

Returning EastEnders star Kellie Shirley has claimed that she nearly blew up the Albert Square set while filming her first scene. The Carly Wicks actress, who returns on Thursday (September 6) to help off-the-rails mother Shirley (Linda Henry), revealed that she accidentally lost control of a truck and ran over electrical wires. Speaking to The Sun, she explained: "When I read the script and it said Carly would drive around Albert Square in a big truck, I thought, 'How am I going to do that?' "The Square is tiny so it's not easy to manoeuvre a great big truck around it, especially when you are as small as I am. "I put on Carly's 5-inch heels and got in the truck but as I started the engine and tried to drive in the heels I couldn't control it and ran over a load of electrical wires and almost blew the Square up.

Carly Wicks is to make a surprise return to 'EastEnders'. The character - played by Kellie Shirley - will appear in Albert Square to support her mother Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) when she hears she has gone on a ''downward spiral'' after discovering Ben Mitchell murdered her friend Heather. A source said: ''Carly didn't realise just how much of a downward spiral she was on. It's hard for her to witness. Carly knows she's got a real fight on her hands to sober her up.'' Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) calls in Carly when he realises little can be done to...

The Grind
Stars: Jamie Foreman, Danny John-Jules, Zoe Tapper, Gordon Alexander, Kellie Shirley | Written and Directed by Rishi Opel
The Grind quite simply is a low budget British gangster film, if you can call a criminal loan shark a gangster. It’s a tale of people living the dream to have a night club and make a success out of it, losers who affect other people’s lives through addiction and just plain selfishness.
At the start of the story Vince has everything; he’s living his dream and has managed to build up his night club to be popular and dreams of opening a casino. The problem is though the funding and business deal that he’d be part of is based on money from a loan shark, which is of course not a good place to start. Add to that police starting investigations into a drugs death in...

Self-Centered is a British mini-web series (web mini-series?) with an arresting, if a bit outlandish, sci-fi premise. Actress Lydia (Kellie Shirley) seemed destined to be the next big thing before spiraling out on drinking and drugs. She goes to sleep drunk in a bathtub after the latest in what we presume are a string of one-night stands and wakes up in a hospital called “The Clinic.” There, The Custodian (Simon Tcherniak) tells her that it’s the future, and the fate of the world depends on her landing the lead role in a new film called For All Our Tomorrows. The premise sounds really silly, and it is, but the show manages to make it intriguing, mainly because the short length and frequent cuts back and forth allow them to keep things vague. Writer Steven Keevil does a great job of giving you just enough information to be curious, but...
